    I love that the milk man still violently flings the cans out haha I'm actually glad they didn't fix it because that took me straight back to being a kid with my grandpa's 3472 mill car.

    The old operating milk , log dumper, and cattle cars were the centerpieces of our old layout and set. Our milk car had been tinkered with often trying to make milk delivery more reliable. I still have that set (with the 736 Berkshire) and still treasure it.

    It's a shame model railroad companies today rarely focus on play value alongside the trains. The models with their tons of details and features are great but the joy of watching a train go around a track only lasts for so long. Action accessories like these is what made companies like Lionel and Triang great for play. Lets hope this trend makes a comeback!
    And yarr angry milk dude throws the cans out with gusto. Here's to seeing that milk platform on your layout someday.

    Yes! Looks a lot like the original sets from the late 40s and 50s! And to make it feel more like the original I’d suggest using Lionel’s older style track

    Omg... The operating milk car. I remember seeing it on "All Aboard America's Best Model Trains" by Tom McComas. I didn't know Lionel brought it back until I looked in the 2020 catalog. 😃
    Update: I just got this set but, there were a few drawbacks. 1. The horn pieces on the powered F3 unit weren't on the roof and 2. I don't have the control track that activates the log or milk cars yet. 😐

    Great video as per usual Eric. I got this set about a month ago. Love it. FYI The log dump car works with the Fasttrack Uncoupling Track 6-12020. However the milk car needs the Operating Uncoupling Track 6-12054. Note the catalogue incorrectly stated that the milk car needed the 6-12020. Which did not work for the milk car.

    I inherited an original A-A Santa Fe F3 set from my grandfather. The thing I remember the most before all the command controlled trains started to enter the picture were these F3s. The most notable thing about them I can remember from such a young age is picking the powered unit up and turning wheels up. This was to see if the horn would work as it was powered by a D battery if I’m not mistaken, and if there wasn’t one in, no horn.

    I’ve noticed that the electro magnet for the the Fastrack Operating/Uncoupling Track is actually raised up a tiny bit in the center making the clearance for the plunger too close to be pulled down to make the log dump car operate. Take a good look and you’ll see what I’m talking about. I have a couple of them, and they’re exactly the same. I use the method you mentioned about using a tubular operating track and 2 Fastrack adapter pieces. They work so much better including the the sliding shoe rails.

    • @jefflampert6336

      In fairness, I never said they had to be. It would only really make a difference if you were after a shelf queen for display only or as a collector's piece, after all you can't run an empty box on a layout.
      As an operator, I prefer locos and rolling stock in good mechanical condition and at least decent paint, a few scratches and a bit of wear doesn't bother me overmuch, and I do restore the occasional basket case with new parts, paint, and reproduction decals.

    • @jefflampert6336
      @jefflampert6336 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Shipwright1918 Fair enough. My point was that since the reviewed set was brand new, it seemed reasonable when talking price to compare comparable condition. But as you said, a pristine postwar train will probably not be run and an even slightly lesser condition postwar train will cost considerably less.

    • @Shipwright1918
      @Shipwright1918 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jefflampert6336
      Point taken, but I will point out even if you had a pristine postwar set, never run, still in the boxes, would still be 50+ years old, while the replica is a brand new copy. Why pay the same if not more for the copy?
      Nothing against replicas, mind, several of my layout's accessories are reissues of the classic ones, but they were appropriately priced less than the originals of similar condition/utility. The only time I insisted on a replica come what may was for the operating water tower, as I wanted to put the water in it and the originals are troublesome to restore.
      On the other side of the fence, I had wanted to get an MTH tinplate train, but when I saw the prices, I did a double-take and went digging, found an original Lionel 262e from the 30's in good running order for far less.

      My support would be given if truth be told about this set. At a glance it looks like a postwar set; in reality, with the exception of a few cars, it has nothing to do with postwar. Does the locomotive have magnetraction? Does it have ac motors? Does it say "built by Lionel"? Is there a GM logo on the side? The postwar locomotive never had exhaust smoke. And while the horn sounds great, it would be nice to have the old battery powered horn. However everything I mentioned would probably be too expensive for Lionel to produce. The log dump car is not compatible with fastrack. Don't glorify this set because it isn't postwar.

    Apparently no one at Lionel pays attention to tolerances. How can you make a special 120th anniversary set and have a log car that does not work with Lionel's premium track system?

      My sentiments exactly. The reason is this: Lionel now produces expensive junk.

    The log dump car looks and works more like the post war helium dump car. My postwar gray log dump car unloaded logs gradually, one at a time as it opened. BTW, are you still collecting Hallmark train ornaments? I plan to sell or trade my collection.
