MEGA Lot of Locomotives from Facebook Marketplace - Will Any Run?

  • I was recently searching Facebook Marketplace lookout for deals on used model trains and rolling stock which is something I do every once in a while just see if anything good is being sold locally.
I wasn't finding much so I was finishing up my search when I stubled across a mega lot of 24 used locomotives for $245 USD. I could see there were a few pretty decent engines and a bunch cheaper ones.
You can't always be sure what you're buying is what's being advertised (condition, authenticity) and the photos didn't make it clear so I wasn't entirely sure what I was buying.
I wouldn't usually purchase items on marketplace though shipping since there isn't much you can do if the seller decides not to ship them however in this case I was lucky and they followed through.

I have an idea about what happened to the one with the hole burned into it. There is an old trick to making the plastic look like dented metal, it involves heating the plastic to the point of being soft and pressing something like a standard screwdriver or other similar tool with a small flat edge to cause depressions in the plastic. I'd bet someone tried that and got the plastic too hot.

Thank you for continuing to share the older retro models that for many are special in that they bring back memories of one's first model locomotive received for Christmas or perhaps a birthday. I still have my Tyco F7 in top running condition with minimal service work required. The model inspired me later to return to the hobby and in my collecting enthusiasm eventually a job working as conductor and engineer on the railroads of Indianapolis Indiana. I am most fortunate to have a main line that connects with Cincinnati in my backyard which runs at least a half dozen trains a day, some rather long with distributive power. My favorite is the Amtrak passenger train which comes through at midnight. I will be checking out more of the Bachmann locomotives as I usually gloss over them. I did not know that some came equipped with can motors instead of the less desirable pancake design. Please continue sharing your finds and ability to restore those locomotives many would consider not worthy of attention.

First one out of the box is the SD40T-2. The EMD tunnel motors were developed for Southern Pacific in the 1970s to alleviate over heating from hot air being drawn in at the top of the locomotives during their trips through the tunnels in California in the Tehachapi mountains. The air intakes were lowered to frame level at the back of the locomotive for this purpose. At 2:10 That's the Athearn SW-7 mislabeled for a long time by Athearn as an SW-1500.

I ended up completely rebuilding the motor after drilling out the rivets and replacing them with bolts...

The Southern Pacific Switcher at 2:55 is an Athearn model of a Baldwin S-12. Baldwin was a very short lived company in the era of dieselization as the one thing they were good at (making steam engines) was no longer what the railroads wanted. This is a totally random comment, but just before the end of the video, when all of the locomotives on the table are being filmed from above, the lighting in the room is catching that CN F-unit at the bottom left just right. It looks like its cab light is on, like it’s just ready to go. It sounds nuts to say inanimate objects have spirits, but they were made for a purpose. I always enjoy a good resurrection or redemption story; that’s why this channel is so good. Turning garbage into a working machine is magic, and it’s a heck of a skill you got there.

That daylight is still so pretty even if it doesn't get fixed. It was one of the first American steam engines I saw in action on TV as a kid in the 90s that wasnt thomas and friends lol it was love at first site for me but I never had the money to get one growing up and still being a budget fan, I'm slowly recollecting HO scale again and would love to maybe finally have a daylight to add to my new growing collection of HO scale model trains again whether you can get fully running again or not

CP never really own Ex-SP tunnel motor, but some of the tunnel motor actually did end up all the way to canada, BLE own a few
Most we're SD40T-3/SD40-3 (ex-SD45T-2), some did wear CN paint scheme

Just wanted to thank you for your content and posts. I’m recently retired from Metro North Rail Road as director of fleet maintenance . I had the entire passenger and freight fleet, loco’s, coaches, EMU’s and freight fleet under me. I’ve collected a few HO scale loco’s passenger cars and freight cars and have learned a lot from you about to what buy and what to steer away from. My next venture will be to design a small layout with the new knowledge I’ve acquired. Thanks again for your efforts, time, editing and content.

Good luck on the NH P32ACDM. Rare and expensive. Before I retired I came across a full D size print of Metro North FL9 blue and red paint scheme. I’m hunting for an FL7 or FL9 loco to paint. An Engineer let me run an FL9 train from Manhattan to Poughkeepsie once. I was confident but careful. Did well except for one stop. I spotted the north coach 1/2 a car length past the north end of the platform. The Conductor grumbled at the engineer but never let on it was a novice at the controls. That was 30 years ago. Can’t do that now. Thanks for replying, happy hunting.

The Kato CN SD40-2 makes the deal great. As far as the Athearn locos, few of them are familiar since I've owned them over the years. The first one would be the GATX SD40-2. This was part of a set from the Athearn Special Editions, and it had a matching GATX SD40-2 dummy to go with it. Other locos are the PRR F7A in which I had repainted into a PC F7A, and the B&O SW7. Also to mention, the Athearn 6 axle GE would be a U28C or U30C in which Athearn made both engines. It hard for me to tell sometimes with a quick glance of these locos.

Love watching these unboxing and test videos, it’s satisfying watching them start up even without any work done. You’ve inspired me to find that same MRC DC controller at my local train show last year to have a DC loop in my layout ^^ it’s still under construction but I love the idea of tuning up old DC locos.

Howdy! Congratulations on that huge lot of engines! It was nice to see quite a few of them running, but too bad the Bachmann GS4 has the same problem as many other Bachmann steamers did from 30-40 years ago.
Keep up the good work on your video content, if you're interested, I'll be starting up a livestream of model railroading DCC and repairs on Twitch in the coming weeks!

That’s a great lot. The Kato SD40 was an amazing score. Like you said, you can’t beat the reliability of an Athearn drive. Hands down they are a timeless design and are bombproof. Although the Rock F40ph is a fantasy job it still looks great on that in my opinion.

Nice bunch of engines. I'm glad you got mostly runners. FB marketplace trains do seem to be overpriced to me too. I was surprised that the Rivarossi with 10 drivers runs through the curves. Thanks for showing these interesting locomotives!
