Squirrel with a gun definitely feels like "I'm making my first video game and what should it be" but less in asset flip sense and more "let's explore some wild ideas." Boil it down to basics, you got a character too small to use the weapons of the world like anyone else, and as such gets a lot of felt recoil. This translates to double jumps for ammo as well as inherent movement during combat. And then that's where they stopped trying to think critically and just went "what's a silly thing to make holding a gun that's too small to really hold the gun"
It's a shame because the idea of using the gun as a double jump is quite clever. It's not original by any means (Quake did it before with rocket launchers, and there was a game on PS1 called Johnny Bazookatone that let you do it), but it's not something you see often, so it feels quite novel.
Feed the deep looks like a mobile game because it was developed by Luke Muscat, who played a large role in the development of Jetpack joyride.(hence the MGJP Easter egg). I believe it’s his first solo project since he left halfbrick.
@@VeritabIlItiIt might also have something to do with the fact that Halfbrick, the makers of Fruit Ninja (who are still making mobile Games as of 2023), are based in Australia where Yahtzee used to live & both of them are related to that now defunct The Mana Bar Arcade in Brisbane. (There was an old episode of ZP that mentioned this, but I can't seem to find it).

Can confirm. I'm a Slav and that's exactly what my primary school looked like.
I'm a bit torn about the controls in Star Trucker. On one hand, it's true it's tricky. On the other hand, it definitely feels trucky. It's not a spaceship, it's a truck that happens to also move up and down. The control difficulties, especially when reversing, are essentially the same as truck sim, except with a second perpendicular dimension. And I guess that's fine? It's exactly what the premise promises. And yet I still wish the cab had vector thrusters.
The local bar I used to frequent in my 20s had that as an option on the jukebox. We knew some of the staff there and, in order to annoy them, spenting a bunch of money to have it play on repeat. Had the knock-on effect of getting it onto the Top Requested list, meaning it would randomly come on between people's choices
As someone who got all the collectables in Squirrel with a Gun, I would say unlike a lot of meme games it's an actual game with progress although it is very short. However it's the most fun I've had with a game in a long time. I actually felt like I was having to much fun. Also, you already know if your going to enjoy this game and if your not one of those people then just don't.
I remember I played Goat simulator back when it came out and I found it boring and misleading. The goat didn't behave like a goat and I was not going around just eating grass! But with squirrel with a gun? I knew exactly what I was in for and I got exactly that!
Cool idea, but I would make it like Sid Meier's Pirates. In addition to needing a letter of marque to hunt ships of other nations, you need to get flags from your nation (or multiple nations if you're so inclined) to claim unclaimed islands, possibly after depopulating the islands through various means: Dropping off infected blankets, sell poisoned food, kill them all, hire pirates to do the killing for you, start a war, or blockade their food supplies until they starve and/or leave. Of course with the ability to steal and re-use flags, where if you manage to steal the flag without getting caught (or you manage to blame someone else) you don't get blamed for the loss of that flag. And you can use your own flags for no rewards except bragging rights. At least, until you manage to hire a governor to manage the islands for you, but that requires a regular flow of money to pay the governor not to mention the firepower to demotivate your governor from declaring independence. Early game have you manage the sloops used to row across the last shallow water to islands without a deep enough harbour. Re-use that interface to later manage your fleets, that way it isn't an entirely new mechanic that gets dumped on the player in the late game, but it will feel new to them. This is all CC BY, in case someone wants to take the idea and run with it.
