Long Term Ownership Review Mk7 Golf R | Is it the Best Daily?!

- Hi Everyone! In this video, I did a walkthrough and review of my 2017 Volkswagen Mk7 Golf R in Limestone Gray Metallic. I've owned for about 1.5 years and 20,000 miles so I have definitely had my time to learn the car. I go over the reliability, performance, maintenance, and more! It has been a great car to own and I am sad to see it though. Although, I did not leave the VW family as I got a 2023 Volkswagen Mk8 Golf R 20th Anniversary Editions with a 6 speed manual! Video on that car soon to come!
P.S. I apologize for some of the messed up audio lol. The wind messed up those rev clips :(.

I've had my MK7 R for about 2,5 years. Zero issues whatsoever so far. About 39000km when I bought it, now its like 56000 km. Did a stage one a little over 1 year ago with dsg upgrade, this year it got an induction kit. It's my daily, drives like a dream.
I definitely think these cars are the best when used as dailys
Tht why never stage one remap Nuthing like a good tune
Ya I own a 2019 Golf R Stage 2 IE Milltek exhaust ngl it's super sexy lol.
Me cherishing my MKIV GTI after 18 years/ 250k wondering what time duration term to use for my review😂 …Archaic review? Sick car and congrats on the VIII.
I own the mk 7.5 Golf R 2020 m. year. It has done 106,000km. Running APR stage 1 ecu tune and
APR dsg tune, fitted with an Invidia Q300 cutback system using existing oem exhaust flaps. I had given it a flogging every so often and no major issues, No issues with water pump either. I believe it got sorted on the mk 7.5. I dissagree. It is a sports performance car and out performs half of the Porsches out there. Changing spark plugs is 60,000km. No need changing it earlier. Waste of money. DSG service is 12,000km but doing it earlier than 80,000km is not necessary.
I aggree that regular service mainenance is a must. There is no issue sticking with recommended oil change service intervals as recommended by the manufacturer, being 15,000km.
The oil used on these vehicles is high tech quality synthetic, more than adequate handling stage 1 tunes, as it has with mine.
But! If any of you want to spend extra money on earlier oil changes is better than very late oil changes.
There is only one complaint. I never ever in my 55 years of driving experienced such a terrible big turning circle.
Original owner of my September 2017 R
Beside regular maintenance like you said

Tonnes of smiles 😊
Nice!!
Thank you for this video, excellent review. very honest. i love my Golf R 7.5. Thankfully, mine's manual
Dude i have 7.5 gti only had for a year now and put about 40 k miles on it in the year of just joy driving I say the only problem I’ve ran into is the tire pressure monitoring system goin out and drive belt needing to be replaced soon lol great car would buy a million if I could
I'm still enjoying my 7.5 R DSG. I also got the silver mirror caps. Makes a big difference. Everything else, stock. Yes, it costs more for everything, oil changes, transmission service, etc vs. the civic I came out of but worth it. 60k miles in and actually feels smoother than when at 10k. I may consider the mk8 R if VW comes out with spektrum. Love the add ons and the Limestone color.
How has it treated you bro?? Just got one!
@@jumppy8442 Congrats. No problems, yet. Except for the water pump. It's an issue on these cars. Look it up on the forums. I was getting an oil change and the guy noticed what looked like leaking fluid from the water pump. I had it pressure tested at the dealership I bought it from. Sure enough, it was leaking. It was still covered under warranty. They replaced the water pump and thermostat no charge. These give out at between 40-70k miles. Drive like normal and don't panic, just be aware of it and be ready to change it out. Follow the maintenance schedule. It's a great car. Stay safe.
Awesome yeah definitely keeping an eye on the water pump, turbo, and suction pump! Thanks man you stay safe as well!@@ericcarson342
Is that paint standard or custom? Visually this is easily the best I've seen, subtle & classic at the same time & real drivers know exactly what they're looking at 🔥🔥🔥
Love the Golf R 7 / 7.5
Thank you for the video.
got my MK8 R two weeks ago, i promise you that new rear diff fixes the boring issue. you can take corners with your right foot now. it steps the back end out like a RWD car .
Yes haven’t been able to drive it much since it’s at dealer with a throw out bearing noise 😹 but yes I felt it right away
You should shift at the stick to get better sounding dsg gear shifts
I got one a year ago. As a tech, it's awesome!!! But i would hate to do the maintenance and repairs as a normal person. Actual repias wise all iv had to do is a motor mount and water pump. But i also cleaned the intake valves while i has i take manifold off
Bro great video, love my Golf R, one of the best dailies for sure! Did you have to do fender screw or fender liner removal mod for the 18x9.5s with 255s? Thanks!
Yes I had it removed and the setup was 18x9
So many of the same mods I have on my 17 in LSG with DSG. I’m stg 2 thru eqt. Ie dp, intake/elbow. Mishimoto ic. Just about to hit 45k. Bought it for 31 a couple years ago. Congrats on the 8! Hoping you got it at a good price and didn’t get bent over at the dealer.
DW i didn't :) sick! honestly decided that i just wanted a manual. will miss the 7R tho
Nice video my mates normal GTI front wheel drive with some mods was so much fun and then I jumped in my 2014 Model R which is all tuned 290kw @wheels. I found it not fun and was a little boring but each to their own. cheers mate
Yeah I felt the same way
My gawdd!!!! What a car
thank you!
Counting down the days to mk8 R review
I also dont know what to expect for my mk8 only put 3300 miles in 6 months. Im still running the factory oil and scared that it will do damage. I plan on changing it at 5000miles considering its better than waiting 10k miles
Have you done anything to the paddle shifters? They sound much more clickier haha
Yes they’re jq Werks paddle shifters. You can get them on my website! westcoasteuros.com/products/jq-werks-madtrace-clubsport-magnetic-paddle-shifters-for-volkswagen?_pos=2&_sid=c8c85b202&_ss=r
So nothing you did mod wise voids the water pump warranty?
Did your Mk7R come with DCC, and if so, did you get a DCC delete kit to fit the Ohlins?
It did and yes
Do you have the link to the spoiler extension?
The original R will always be the best
MK4 R32
Yes I want to get one for sure if the price is right! I've had Mk5 R32, Mk6 R, Mk7 R, and now Mk8 R
@@k1ngandre I had one I supercharged it went to shows, lost her to a flood in 2012, only 28k miles. I would get another but they are asking crazy prices, there one on cargurus with 35k miles the guy wants $47K and not worth it, would get a used RS3 for that kind of money. But how I miss my R!
@@landroverSV dam that sucks. Must’ve been an amazing car! Yeah they’re too expensive right now for sure. I would probably go for a clean high miles one and just enjoy it if I were to get one.
I think the mk 7.5 is the best year
state ref 😂 california is the worst place for cars.. cant even run a stage 2 what a shame. Great informative video tho ! i see ur reels on ig all the time lol
haha appreciate it. yeah can be annoying to deal with.
I'm probably gonna get a GR Corolla, FL5/ FK8 CTR, or Integra Type S
lol good for you but why comment that
Mkiv R32 poop on your boring exhausts
Plus an auto such a waste of a 2.0 engine used in all Audis and vws haha
R32 your daddy. I have one. Golf r turbo sounds like poop
great looking car. nice job.
Appreciate it !
As nice as these cars are they are just money pits
