- If you love the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and their colorful history, then you're going to love this terrific two-minute video by NFL Films which chronicles the uniform color history of the Buccaneers uniform from their first season in 1976 to the present. Narrated by Scott Graham, one of the great voices of NFL Films, this video features three uniform history experts: Joe Horrigan who is VP Communications and Exhibits at the Pro Football Hall of Fame where he has worked for more than 35 years; Michael MacCambridge, author of "America's Game: The Epic Story of How Pro Football Captured A Nation" and many other books as well as editor of the massive "ESPN College Football Encyclopedia"; and Scott Sillcox, sports uniform historian.

In 1975, shortly after the NFL awarded an expansion franchise to the city of Tampa, Bucs' ownership partnered with a local radio station to conduct a name-the-team contest that resulted in the Buccaneers being selected over other choices such as Buzzards, Coastal Tides and Sailors. The team then commissioned award-winning Tampa Tribune cartoonist Lamar Sparkman to design their first logo (which debuted on April 14, 1975), which featured a pirate named Bucco Bruce wearing a plumed hat and clenching a knife in his mouth. “I approached it with the idea that he was a cavalier, not a hairy-legged slob,” Sparkman said, noting how he used actor Errol Flynn, smuggler Jean Lafitte and the famous Musketeer d’Artagnan as inspirations for his design. “The plume feather adds class, I think. I put the dagger in his mouth to add aggression, and then had him wink. It is a half wink and half sneer.” The logo was accompanied by a unique color scheme of fluorescent orange and red as a nod to Florida’s citrus industry and warmth of the sunshine, as well as the symbolism of “courage and fortitude in battle.”

The Pewter is a huge improvement
I just loved the Creamsicle look. Was okay with the first pewter/red unis. In latest versions the logo has gotten way too big on the helmets. I'm obviously a fan of understatement. The Browns in all whites are my favorite unis.

They won a Super Bowl in those red and pewter uniforms, practically erasing 20+ years of futility, and what do they do? They ditch them for the nightmare getup they have now. Makes me sick.

I honestly prefer the creamsicles. It's a Florida team, so you want lighter colors. Just change the logo if they want.

The Creamsicles were the best! One of my favorite all-time uniforms in sports. Wish they'd go back to that orange color. If the winking pirate doesn't look tough enough for some people, just rebrand the logo to a tougher-looking pirate. Same colors though. Keep pewter in the color scheme, but make orange the primary color again.

I prefer the Orange. So unique and the pirate isn't winking , he's bracing it from the sun's glare before he attacks.
It would be great if the Bucs went back to their original logo and uniforms, but I think it is highly unlikely because of the losing culture they had for most of those years. I don't mind their current logo and uniforms, but their "creamsicle" jerseys were awesome!

The 2 best uniforms in the NFL were the Houston Oilers and the Tampa Bay Buccaneer "creamsicle" ones.
I HATE Tampa's current uni's, and i wish the Houston Texans would bring back the Oiler name and look.
They can't because the estate of Bud Adams won't let the Texans have the "Oilers" nickname for the sake of their franchise's history as long as they live.

Bucs uniforms got better once they added the creamsicle pants but too bad they only wore them for five years I believe. The red & pewters that followed were okay for that era but they should return to creamsicles. These current uniforms absolutely suck and need to go.

I prefer the newer ones. In my brain those were always the pathetic sorry Bucs of the 80s and early 90s. Then they switched to the bad ass skull and blades logo with Sapp Brooks and Lynch.

the creamscicle uniforms are next to ugly with the Broncos brown and yellow uniforms and their vertical striped socks.
Why in the hell did they change into what they wear now? Those are among the worst uniforms, not just in the NFL, but in all of sports. Who, in their right mind, would green light that crap? Hideous. They should go bowling with the Seahawks. Their uniforms suck also.

Hi Age Oh Truth - I have to admit that you are right, perhaps talking heads were a bit harsh about the creamsicle. I love the fact that there are so many fans of the creamsicle and ultimately that's all that matters - the passion! & the dolphins colors/uniform WAS manly and intimidating? a dolphin?, as in....Flipper, happiness, gaiety. ...and TEAL as the main color. didn't seem to hurt Miami any. the original Bucs uniform & colors rocked....so much so they made an attempt to bring it back. and it would've remained back if not for the fact that the league and game has gone limp in the last 30 yrs.. everything today is about LOOKING badass, tough. tattoos, dreads, posturing.... not BEING tough. they look like clowns now. i'd stack my boys from the 60's/70's/80's NFL, up against these punks any day. would love to see the outcome.
