    Good to see you back making videos Jon. I built a bench press, probably about the same size as yours. I used a 12 tonne (I think?) bottle jack and that seems to work ok. But, I could not afford to have it permanently on the bench if it was used only around a dozen times a year. Mine has legs/feet like your one, but I designed them to hinge/pivot, and I have a brace (like an old window stay) that locks the feet in place. The benefit is that I can fold up the feet and hang the entire press on the wall. I made this before making YT videos so I don't have a video of the build. I will do a 'Shop made tools and upgrades' video on it at some point. But, in the interim, let me know if you want some photos. I'm sure you could modify the feet on your press, then it could be hung on the wall and out of the way when not in use.

    Good to see you again Jon. You don't need to apologise for not posting anything for the past few weeks, it's quality that counts not quantity and your videos are great.
    Best wishes, Stephen.

    Hello Jon. I have a similar one to yours, but that one is a much better quality. One of the 1st jobs was to drill 4 holes in each sole plate & knock in roll pins. The pins locate on the inner edges of the frame. My Son in law has a 20ton in their service centre. He has the hand pump the other way around as in the handle swings down not up. Nice to see you back.
    Steve.

    I can highly recommend Loctite 55 thread sealing cord rather than thread tape, it does a far better job, but I think on your gauge you should really have a soft copper washer in the joint between gauge and fitting and no PTFE.
    I'm looking forward to seeing the new tooling being produced.

    Good to see you back.
    I like the 4-post open style design 👍👍
    The operating angle of the pump handle looks rather awkward, easy fix.

    Welcome back Jon. Can I suggest you also constrain the support pins, that's also a weak point in my opinion, otherwise it could all end up on your feet.. Looking forward to the tooling videos. Dimple dies and forming tools ooonh!!!

    That unit will be very handy. I use Teflon paste instead of tape. The tape can rip off and get into the valves and such. Also on the hose fittings didn’t need sealing tape. The two black plates just float on the table I use my press for everything

      Ha haaaa, yes. I have had plenty of offers but I just don't want to get on that treadmill, there are more than enough Vevor reviews on TH-cam to almost put me off watching some of my favourite creator friends. I realise I am cutting my nose off to spite my face really, but I want to be in full, unbiased control of my content. I really can say something is crap if it is, and I am even more likely to if I burnt a hole in my pocket buying it lol. Cheers, Jon

    That hand pump orientation looks like a piece of gym equipment!
    I like mine horizontal so I can use my weight on the handle.
    10 ton has done most jobs for me, but would prefer 20 tons, it may move more with less struggle.

    Very good video Jon. Its a nice size press and I think it might fit on the end of one of my benches. I don't have a press but I have a sealey body repair kit which has the same pump as your press and various jacks. I have made a frame of welded 2" sq box that I can mount a jack in and press things if I need too. It is space efficient but I could do with a proper one. My brother has a floor standing SGS 20 tonner, too big for me. I agree with you re the quality of the Sealey stuff. The pump and jacks I have a heavier and sturdier than enerpac ones. Great to see you back.

    Good to see you back on a Sunday morning Jon. I have certainly missed my fix of Jon's Workshop on a Sunday morning, but can appreciate the pressure of work and home life can get in the way of workshop time and making videos for the channel. I too have considered a hydraulic press but like you I am struggling for workshop space. Looking forward to seeing some of the kit you are going to make for the press. I may then decide to part with my fly press and small folder and invest in the hydraulic? Watch this space! Keep up the good work with the channel Jon.

    Nice addition to the shop, looks reasonably made Jon.
    Spot on, ref the sliding plates, very dangerous, unless the single driled hole is for a tether system 😳 😢😮, only joking.
    I've a similar capacity hydraulic press, made by Churchill, no idea when , it's a floor standing type, made a deep tray to store metal offcuts, added casters to it, live outside.
    I did buy a 12"/300mm wide box and pan folder, plus a vice mounted rollers from Warco, nicely finished, they sorted out 2 shortages promptly.
    Currently on the floor though 😢😮.
    Thanks for sharing.

    I've got a 20T Sealey floor standing which we bought used from a back street garage in Manchester for £125, very beaten up. Same problem the deck plates were not located so I welded a couple of strips on the bottom to key them in. I had a problem getting to 20T pressure. Changed the seal on the ram but did not change much. I think I can get to about 14T without bypass. That's about 7000 psi. They spec at 10000psi I think - that would be 20T for mine. Adjusting the safety valve did not change anything so possibly the pump seal is worn. Cheers

When the weather warms I might have a clear up and feel more inclined to venture into the garage and out of hibernation. I suppose I should go and see what the gremlins have been playing with, and hiding, during the winter.😗

    Welcome back, missed your videos on a Sunday but realise you need a break now and again. As mentioned elsewhere in the comments, there's no need for PTFE tape due to the type of fittings, also you might want to modify the position of the pump unit through time and have it mounted horizontally rather than vertical - easier purchase pushing down rather than to the side. Looking forward to your tools for it and might steal some of your ideas as I recently got a no name brand 20 tonne floor standing version (no bench space - in fact very little space at all due to all the "stuff" I might need someday😀)

    • @howardosborne8647
      @howardosborne8647 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Agree with you about the pump unit positioning. I often need to place the pump on my press in the horizontal position on the bench to get good leverage for high pressure pumping. Also agree about the hydraulic fittings,they have a sealing ring built in as standard and I've never had any leaks on mine.

  • @Paul-FrancisB
    @Paul-FrancisB 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    Hi John, Looks very similar to my 15year old Clarke version except the work table on your one isn't bent yet 😊. I don't believe that's a taper sealing thread on the pressure gauge it's a cone and seat arrangement so you shouldn't put PTFE tape on the threads which is a no no on high pressure hydraulic systems due to the risk of particulates and also PTFE will creep under high pressure. Likewise for the hose quick connector, should not have tape on it.
    Kind regards Paul
