Hi Jon. Dad used to sell these in his Electrical shop back then. Not many sold due to the price. He sold more Perdio etc radio's of which were mainly made in Taiwan. Nice reno though, looks good. Steve.

GDR & FDR equipment were always well made, but the materials used differed considerably, i had both East and West German motorcycles. Did you find any micro film or micro dots Jon. I recommend Mr Carlsons Lab on YT, brilliant old electronic repairs. Love the electro mechanical devices on this era of equipment. Nice project.
Stannic oxide is used for optically polishing acrylics etc. Eithe pitch polishing or a cotton cloth can be used with an aqueous slurry of stannic oxide. Its usually availble from Jewellery supplies vendors.
Grundig TV s were all the go in Australia in the 70s . That Autsol is as good as Vegemite, good luck with the Electronics i always have trouble with drawings that had Squiggily lines . Kit from down under
Back from Snowball Engineering. I would use a spray contact cleaner for those switches etc. Its amazing how much crap it can clean out and it dries in seconds.

Another good job well done. Nice quality sound, unfortunately, most radio is moving to inferior (in some cases) DAB. A wee tip or finer polishing is toothpaste but finish would probably be limited but the type of cloth used (microfibre might be best)

Another rabbit hole I fell into, the only advice I can give is never plug valve gear be it amps, radios or old test equipment into the mains to see if they work before giving them a good look over and then use a dim bulb tester or a variac! Micro mesh is a very good abrasive paper/cloth to use, used to use it to polish my corian pens, comes in stupidly fine grades! As always Dude stay safe n well. TFS, GB :)
Hi Jon. That brought back some memories. I spent a fair bit of my teens fixing things like that for my parents and grandparents. It was more running repairs than restoration, but I suppose it was nearly 30 years ago! I would suggest getting some solder wick (also called desolder braid) for tidying up after desoldering parts. It's very good to have on hand, and compliments a solder sucker. I have a few electronics beginners books if you're interested?
Hiya Jon maybe as a point of interest, the little stickers on the top were from the bbc sometime in the seventies, if memory serves me. they supplied them when they had a big change over of their frequencies. I was only a kid then, but I remember my dad put them on our stereogram, now there's a piece of equipment! still in their loft to this day😁

used isopropylene alcohol to remove the sticky surface on a camera body , removed the rubberized coating (thats the stuff that decomposes and get sticky over time) , so dont use that stuff too vigorously as it can melt some plastics one trick for the see through plastics (and car lights too btw) is put them in the dishwasher , they come out like new , just dont tell the wife

That was very nice Jon. Beautiful radio. I used to do a lot of this stuff in my teens. Wipes are good for cleaning. A 2" paint brush and some spray foam cleaner is very good for grilles etc. Switch cleaning/lube spray also good. As is air duster, or you can just use your compressor and make sure you don't blast it too hard, so long as its dry air. I won't go into any technical stuff just now as you will get to that later on. The only thing I would say is if you ever get any valve based kit, don't be tempted to plug it in. They have big capacitors that degrade so it'll probably just go bang. Have fun mate, its such a joy to hear old radios etc working again.

@@jonsworkshop You can "reform" capacitors that have degraded over time. Often not worth it though. Really large ones, even modern ones need to be reformed if they are in storage for long periods. It's an interesting string to add to your bow, the electronics. It's helped me enormously over the years.

I love the old radios have several of my own 1960's to 1970 and they play better then the Chinese crap. Great restore of a classic peace of history.
