"The Highveld dusk was just gathering, and I saw this pair of eyes through the long grass. I switched off the car and waited (always works for me). The jackal calmed, moved on up the hill, and treated me to this song that echoed right across all 15 000 hectares of the Suikerbosrand Nature Reserve, it seemed.
Hiking or driving on the motor route, this reserve, preserving the last of the highveld grasslands ecosystem, always touches me with small surprises."

It's 11:56 and I just heard a jackal howling near my house. We have quite a few jackals nearby. As soon as I heard it, I already knew it was a jackal but came here just to make sure. So when I listened to the jackals in this video, I just said "Yep, that's about right."

Nice audio! We have jackals here in Israel. They usually start howling between midnight and 1am. It sounds like a cross between a coyote and a really bit cat. Nothing dog like or wolf like at all. They're very shy, it's really hard to see them, even though they come into the city limits to scavenge. I haven't been lucky enough to see on in person yet, though I hope I do some day.
Yep, same here! I'm in Bulgraria and there are jackals here. They are pretty close to my house and start howling from somewhere ear 11:00 PM and stop somewhere at 1:00 AM. Beautiful animals, sadly never seen one but I hope to someday.
It is normal in Indian villages. I have seen jackal many times.
They sound strange, I used to hear them in the forest but never seen one.
