For most people who start eating disorder recovery their eating patterns are all over the place - they have been restricting, skipping meals, trying to eat less during the daytime only to binge out at nighttime, they haven't provided their body with consistent fuel throughout the day - all of this has messed up their hunger cues and stressed out their bodies. So many people just don't know how to eat when they start recovery - what could be some of the first steps? And something like regular eating may seem such a basic concept... but time and time again it's what I end up talking about with most of my new clients. Typically it's one of the first steps we start implementing to restore their normal hunger cues. I never prescribe any meals plans and most people don't need to count calories (to eat enough) in their recovery. But regular eating provides a basic form of structure that I see is helpful for so many people.

First, it took me 3 weeks to accept and fall into proper recovery without restrictions. I had to cut out certain restrictions each week until I realized that if I dont go All In this is never going to work. Once I did that I realized, ok so I need to eat constantly now. I work a full-time job outside of the house, 8 hours a day 5 days a week. I started bringing breakfast and lunch to work, and portioned snacks. Portioned snacks are apparently also restrictions. So now I bring a giant soft cooler full of bags of snacks so I have as much as I want of whatever I want at my disposal. This has helped tremendously! I have found that if I eat about every 2 hours, I'm good to go. I usually eat about 4 times a day unless my body has a random hunger spell later in the night which would make it 5 times (which seems to only happen on days where I'm more physically active- in general though, not exercising). Morning and night snacks are difficult as one of my restrictions was 18:6 intermittent fasting. It's so hard to break YEARS of IF and a lifetime of fear of gaining weight. This is hard, no doubt, but listen to Elisa, she has been a gift from God- never met the woman but she has been the only person with all of the proper experience and information to make a difference with my ED recovery. This is my second relapse in the past 3 years, and I really wish I had found Elisa sooner so I could have ended this the first time and not have to go through it longer and worse this time around. But that's ok- everything will be ok. Turn to Elisa's videos, blogs, or book whenever you doubt yourself or feel like you want to start restricting again. It really helps grab the logical side of the brain and push you back to your goal of recovery.
I would have hired you in an instant if you were available- hopefully I wont need coaching by time you come back from your leave, but if I do, you'll hear from me!
Thank you Elisa, from the bottom of my heart! I hope you and the baby are doing well and that Motherhood has brought you all the joy imaginable!

Just eat, my friend. This will gradually stop and you will eat normally and sleep good without feeling hungry.

Do you have advice for lack of appetite in recovery? I lost my appetite in the beginning of recovery due to depression and my recovery has lasted so long because of it and i feel stuck cause i have long pauses from eating and obviosly end up constantly binging because of that. I feel like i dont even feel the hunger anymore untill a long time has passed. Is the solution simply to force eat and can my appetite possibly come back that way?

Hey I know this was a while ago but I’m the same and my psychologist told me it’s due to the ED and tells me to eat three meals and three snacks per day, ignoring hunger cues (lack of), and they have actually been slowly coming back!

I have the same issue. I still force myself to eat, and once I start eating I can actually feel the hunger. If I don't eat, I end up having a physical starvation mode (chills, tremors, weakness, and faintness) at the end of the day that leads to the extreme hunger eating (I try so hard not to call it binge eating). I remind myself that I don't like the feeling of extreme hunger bouts so it's easier to force eat enough through the day to prevent them. It's also emotionally easier to force feed rather than endure the extreme hunger feeding which circles back around to guilt and shame, the things we are trying so hard to get rid of.

    Hey Elisa,
Can you please!!suggest sth about the acid reflux during recovery
Cause I am getting it whenever and which ever food I am eating.Do you think it will go away if I eat more cause I wasn't facing it till I went all in but now I am facing it all the time when I eat
It's getting really frustrating and stopping me from eating certain food cause I am afraid it will trigger it more and its also making me eat less cause if I think of i eat more the pain will be unbearable.

eating more, resting, recovering, in general, is very important yes. but what you can do is ask your doctor maybe advice on what medication you could take for acid reflux (like H2 blocker). it's only for a temporary period as you recover and are restoring your digestion. because sometimes adding in those things can be really helpful so you can keep eating and recovering, just as same as sometimes anxiety medication can be helpful, or digestive enzymes etc during recovery. but you need to talk to your doctor about this.

@@FollowTheIntuition thanku for your advice and I will continue to eat more but I have decided to learn badminton but it's not for weight loss but for my own happiness and i have had already gained so much weight in these past two weeks and i dont know how much weight I have gain more in the future but i hope everything will be fine
Do you think gaining 5 kg in one week and more in the other can be water weight or is it real i don't know 🤷‍♀ but I am doing all in fir my recovery and it had really messed up with my tummy but still I will continue to do it until and unless I am fully recovered 😇

Is it normal to be more hungry on rest days?

  • @aplaca442

Should you weigh your food and count the calories in recovery?
Because right now I don't really know how much and what my body needs... I kind of feel that it "wants" something, but I don't know what I should give it, if that makes sense and if you even know what I mean... I'm just a bist overwhelmed with food, i guess?

@Hollie Korreckt ok, thank you very much :)
I'm just not sure if I will be able to do this, because I'm actually also scared that my stomach will be expanded after eating enough or too much 🥲😟
      But I'm gonna try 😓
