Ella expressed joy, warmth and strength. There's a mother quality in her voice to me. It's an interesting contrast to Billie Holiday's broken voice who expressed vulnerability and rawness. The voice exposes the personality behind it.
Totally agree. She is the one of the only singers (Blossom Dearie excepted) that I've heard who maintained innocence and purity of sound to her voice as she aged. "The voice exposes the personality behind it." Right on.
I THOUGHT I had found the best name in Jazzmeia Horn until I saw Thelonius CAIN!!! ..Ok, I'll compose myself. Seriously, Jazzmeia is the truth - vocals, style, confidence, curiosity-understanding-seeking, did I say style? That ankh bracelet???? I'm done. Seriously, I love NPR even more for this.
AKLADY87 I wonder if it’s that their names influence who they are as a person, or that their parents named them something relating to a very important value to them and then instilled that value in their child. Just a thought :)
Not only is Jazzmeia Horn a wonderful young jazz musician in her own right, who can wail with the best of them, she also has absorbed the spirit of the music, and she can explain it so well to others (to the extent such things can be explained) and better yet demonstrate it superbly.
Jazzmeia is an amazing lady in person. I did a small clinic with her a few years ago and it was incredibly influential in the direction I wanted to take my musical journey.
OMG! THIS IS AMAZING TALENT! I was just scanning through some channels and was shocked when I came across this young lady! You are Amazing! Your talent can't be measured! Your skills are AWSOME! Thank you for sharing your talent!
That was SOOOO good! I am an Ella lover and I really respect and admire how you have studied and created your OWN style, as influenced by our legendary musical ancester! And I totally agree with the fact that Ms. Jazzmeia Horn needs a Tiny Desk performance STAT! Much appreciated, my sisterqueen!!!
I couldn't agree definitely more Sarah! Jazzmeia is incredible!!! but honestly she sounded best when she was imitating Ella, which only reconfirms how great Ella actually was. Also people always talk about Ella's scat singing, but I equally love the way Ella interprets a ballad like "Something To Live For" , Summertime" and "How long has this been going on".....just stunning!!!!
That was really good Jazmia Horn... I’m a singer, Jazz, r&b, classically trained... is so glad for your gift, and you taking the time to share... We do have to find ourselves honing OUR OWN styles. There is something very spiritual and powerful in doing so. It’s s journey within, and very revealing what we will produce uniquely our own...🌷💕❤️🙏🏾Peace Sister...
Love to put on Ella records when I'm making dinner or relaxing. Such a beautiful, legendary and inspiring voice, and someone I really look up to in terms of mastering vocal performance.
My mom played her when I was a kid, and she was great! I love her version of "Night and Day" *"With the beet beet beet of the tom tom"* YO GO GIRL, YOU GOT IT!
Lovely heartfelt cometary it’s so important to understand the history of music its the path that leads to the present . Many modern churches are contemporary, they ignore the hymns of old it’s a slap in the face to the history of the music . I’m not opposed to what’s new but we should not discard the what’s come before.
Ella Fitzgerald is my all time favorite singer of any genre! Blue Skies is one of my favorite songs and you totally killed the Blue Skies solo! I’ve been trying to get those syllables down forever. Jazzmeia is a great singer! I look forward to hearing more from her in the future. 🎙 🎶
This year I went to a jazz camp and got to sing with professional jazz artists. At the end we had the chance to perform. I did Ella's "it don't mean a thing" and my teacher decided to make me scat during the Instrumental. It was one of the first times I had ever done that, and I had just started jazz (i'm 13) but it went really well. My cousin filmed it and sent it to my dad. He later put it on facebook, where a singing coach, that coaches a lot of singers in italy (where I live) and also coaches singers during competitions like the x factor saw it and told my dad how she really liked my voice. This year I'm probably going to take a lesson or two from her
Love this❣️you’re as beautiful as your voice. And your voice and rhythm and scat-ability is incredible. Thank you for sharing. I will listen ( a lot) and learn from you Jazzmeia. 🙏🏼
Love your video, Ms. Fitzgerald was one of my mother's fav singers, and had many of her albums, EF became one of mine. You are an excellent scat singer. I heard that when Ms. Ella was signed for a performance, it was as a dancer. She changed before curtain time and opened as a singer. Wow!
Ella is the GOAT when it comes to Jazz. No shade to Billie Holliday. But Ella's perfect tone and smooth vocal is unparalleled. And I must say, I love your voice.
WOW! Yes, I did learn something new today! Thank you, Ms Horn! You have a beautiful voice, unique "signature" sound and an amazing, true-to-form outfit that is as ethnically and artsy as you are a musician. Thank you 3xs over!!! And thank you as well, NPR(!!!!!) for having this TH-cam series/channel!!!
Yes! Jazzmeia's version of 'Up Above My Head' was one of the songs that recently got me through my grandmother's death. Listening to her album though, I would have thought that she was more influenced by Betty Carter. Oh well, she's dope AF.
Doing Betty's style to a T. Funny to talk about Ella's style first. Should do a segment on Betty Carter too. Love Ella, though, and her legacy as improvisor. Fantastic that she's paying homage and educating about the tradition. Kudos!

Juan well said
This comment is spot on.
Totally agree. She is the one of the only singers (Blossom Dearie excepted) that I've heard who maintained innocence and purity of sound to her voice as she aged. "The voice exposes the personality behind it." Right on.
Yeah, that seems about right on both accounts
Nailed it.
Speaking of her, when are we getting her tiny desk??
FACTS!!!!
Tiny desk concerts are amazing!
Yaaaaassssss!!!?!!!!
RIGHTT
Yes, definitely waiting for that one!!!
Jazzmeia Horn is an amazing singer very talented thanks NPR

@@alexiswilliamsinc thank you and yes shes highly underrated
This temporarily healed my depression. 💕😭
ayanada06 hold on tight girl. You gain superpower strength when you come out of it.
Yes!
Girl Ayanda, from SA? Why depressed, you have the best skies...after Namibia
ayanada06 Hope you feel better very soon 💜
Me too, you put into words what I feels
I can definitely hear not only Ella in her phrasing but also Sarah Vaughan
Sean L yess!
also betty charter. especially listen to bettys version of “Tight” and then to Jazzmeias
Truth
she gives me more Sarah Vaughan vibes to be honest
I hear the Sarah Vaughn and the Betty Carter. But this young lady is a beast in her own right. And named Jazzmeia to boot? Haha.
She has a beautiful singing voice.
And looks too.. wow
Would've been awkward if she grew up not liking jazz. Her parents took a gamble, but it paid off big time :D
Right? I wondered if that is her stage name, but it's her birth name. She said her grandmother named her Jazzmeia.
Research shows people's names can influence who they are as a person.
AKLADY87 I wonder if it’s that their names influence who they are as a person, or that their parents named them something relating to a very important value to them and then instilled that value in their child. Just a thought :)
I actually did grow up not liking Jazz. Hahaha. It's funny because I didn't get I to jazz u til I was 16.😂😂😂😭
@@artistryofjazzhorn Your given name has the word "jazz" in it?

Its great to know the history of the art yet having your own style. I like the way she explained this.
Yes, I saw her live.. I love her. She was amazing. it was a no camera type of show.. I truly loveddddddddddddddd it
I am incredibly jealous omg

I smiled for 4 min straight listening to her sing. Beautiful voice and smile. This warmed my soul
Her voice reminds me of lianne la havas if she sang jazz

Oh my god! The moment she started to do the "ella" impro i was blown away and had to play it again :DD
I am so lucky. I am going to see her tonight (November 7, 2023) in concert at the University of Miami Gusman Concert Hall.

Ella Fitzgerald is a great musical icon. You are representing that style of music very well. Bravo!👏🏽👏🏽

Love her vibe, love her style, love her voice. And she radiates such wisdom and peaceful energy.
She is beautiful and to know her musical history adds to the beauty....omg, we are grateful 4 her as well.
All great musicians know their history, and understand how the greats did what they did... even if they don't use it.
