    Flat out one of the most well done and informative videos for DIY folks ever made. Showing the way to get into the service menu rather than using a separate attached computer (which is what ever repair facility tells you is needed) was beyond awesome. Thank you thank you thank you.
    Admittedly this was the longest brake job I've ever done - thank you Mercedes. Two separate pieces, etc. Really... REALLY...
    I'm used to 10 minute jobs on older Porsches and without your video I would have failed this job (though I suspect one can pull the caliper off without retracting the parking brake through the service menu, I'm betting it would have been impossible to put back on).
    And the 18mm socket. Jeez, I've been servicing German cars for 30 years and never needed one before. Great to know I had to go run out and get one before starting the job.
    My most sincere gratitude.
    You rock dude.

    I looked at your excellent video today again and changed my rear brakes pads and rotors on my 2015 ml350. Went smoothly beside having to use a gas torch to help releasing the rotors from the hub. Thanks again

    Thank you for this excellent and very detailed video. I noticed you used a brake caliper tool to compress the brake piston. I have always used normal clamps for this.

    • @IvanRossS
      @IvanRossS  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      This tool allowed to freely spin piston while you're pressing on it, some brake calipers Pistons you cannot just simply pressed in, they have to be turned at the same time. At that time I was not sure what kind of piston it is and just by looking on it you can see a little cut outs right on top of it, from my experience those type of pistons with cut outs have to be turn, but in this case it seems like on the video that they never actually turned.. I purchased this tool on Amazon for like 20 bucks, way more convenient to use this then just a regular caliper press that I used to use and still have one in my belongings.

    Excellent video...both this and the front brake video. Have done ML350 brakes before but wanted to check so I didn't forget anything. Two comments...1) My local MB dealer wanted $1800 for new pads and rotors...cost me only 400 and that was for drilled/slotted rotors and carbon fiber/ceramic pads (and hardware). 2) might consider adding recommendation to use a torque wrench to tighten bracket, caliper, and wheel bolts.

  • @sams_6

    Sliding pin bolts: though a 13mm socket might work like in this video, if you look at the back of these bolts you'll see they are actually Torx T-40. You'll get a much better grip, especially on a stubbornly tight bolt, with the T-40. The outside of the head is pretty soft and a 13mm wrench or socket may slip and round it off.

    Very informative and very well presented...Thank You! If rotor and pads are worn on 1 side of rear of vehicle only, do you recommend replacing only the one side or both rear brake rotors and pads?

    • @IvanRossS
      @IvanRossS  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Unfortunately when this happened you have to replace both sides at the same time rotors and pads because when you will be performing a break in one side will stop quicker than another one. If your rear need to be replaced only don't worry about the front if they're okay and vice versa

    Nice presentation. I need know how to remove brake light. I still can't erase it. Everything done well as you showed. Only difference is mine is a 2010 ml350 bluetec. My warning and ABS came on before replacement of pads. I replaced ABS speed sensor but light still. Left rear hit a pothole then the lights came on ABS and warning. I tried clear them. What am really asking is how to clear them since the car is braking well and nothing seems wrong.

    • @IvanRossS
      @IvanRossS  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well from my experience if ABS showing you it's mean you still have a problem. Usually the way how ABS system works if it detects error then it will show, if error was not detected ABS light will go away, you will still have a code stored as a history in the system you . You can clear them, but there is really no way to clear out ABS light for it to go away it means that you still have a problem somewhere. I could be wrong. All experience that I had with ABS system, this is how it worked, as soon as the problem was fixed ABS automatically goes away but it's a Mercedes..... you replace ABS speed sensor how did you knew this is was the problem?? usually when ABS comes up it's mean one of your sensor that on wheel failed. You have 4 of them. the way to find out which wheel speed sensor went out you have to read codes directly from ABS... cannot be done with the regular check engine scanner, you have to find and buy one from Amazon or ebay that can actually read ABS error codes, im sure as soon as you clear those codes, that ABS system will automatically come back as soon as it will find error.

    Best brake repair video I've seen on youtube. Actually one of the best DIY videos overall. Wish that others would match your level of clarity and attention to details. Only question is do you only bleed lines if the hydraulic system is opened ? I've always bled lines during every brake job, even when the system was not opened. Rational is to remove the old brake fluid which tends to accumulate water and cause corrosion. Maybe this is overkill ?

    • @IvanRossS
      @IvanRossS  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you! No u dont have to. IRS only for rotor replacement

    • @IvanRossS
      @IvanRossS  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would not bleed the system every single time you replace brakes. but every other time, this is definitely Overkill but it will keep your master cylinder work forever and over all performance of brakes of course will be better.

      V Pandita Just so you know for future reference use. next time if you wanna check the parts capability or some work done to your vehicle you can simply check what generation of your car by searching it on Google . Example: if your 2013 Honda Fit - will be 3d generation, they were made from 2010 until 2015. so 80% parts or work same. unless u have different suspension package or bigger/smaller engine.

    2 questions:
    1.- What does the "moving to fitting position" adjusment do?
    2.- Why did you open the brake reservoir cap?

    • @IvanRossS
      @IvanRossS  6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Yussnan84 This vehicle have electronic emergency brake. So they have to be released through the onboard computer for future brake pad replacement. This is very important step and you cannot miss it !! I always open brake fluid reservoir cap for brake fluid return, because every time you compressing brake caliper piston, brake fluid returning back to reservoir and if that cap is closed you're gonna creat unnecessary pressure. Also be aware if you're brake fluid being topped of and you're changing your brake pads, you might need to remove some fluid. Since brake fluid will go back, back to Reservoir, extra fluid will over flow and brake fluid will be dripping everywhere, into your engine bay, and on your paint..

    Excellent DIY; only question is do you change the rotor and brake pad on the passenger side and then reinstate the parking brake or not? meaning after brake pad/rotor replacement on both rear tires, then only you go to the service asyst to engage the parking brake? right ?

    Following your instruction to replace the rotor and pads but they got really hot after a long drive. There seems to be drags somewhere. I have done everything I can think of like greasing this or that. Do you know if there is anything else I need to do? The only thing I can think of might be the e brake.

    • @IvanRossS
      @IvanRossS  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They both dragging?? Both getting hot? It should not be e brake because when you enter settings to release e-brake for replacement and then not returning settings. E-brake will not be activate, it will just simply not going to work at all. Also check if u plunged harness back for e-brake

    • @IvanRossS
      @IvanRossS  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would recommend you to flush your brake system it might got dirty somewhere. One of the ABS valve clogged !

    • @IvanRossS
      @IvanRossS  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      by the way when you have new rotors and new brakes they will always start to getting really hot and steaming because they're new and some new material and oils are burning so it might seems to be their extremely hot because they're steaming but it's not it's absolutely normal and it will go away. After driving and braking. touch your wheel and if it's really hot this is not good

    • @chuguanyu
      @chuguanyu 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@IvanRossS yes. they both got hot. it's not bad for short trips. but any trips longer than 20 minutes make them hot. it was steaming hot the first few days. it's getting a little better. but i can still feel calipers are warm since the fronts are basically cold. do you know how long roughly it would go back to normal. i'm thinking to take it to a local mechanic for an inspection. thank you for notifying me the message by leaving a comment on one of my videos.

    • @chuguanyu
      @chuguanyu 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Took it to a euro car shop and they basically redid the brake job and found no issue. But it’s still getting hot. I guess I either do the fluid flush or have to take it to the dealer

    I did not see you torque the guide pins & rotor mount bolts.

    • @IvanRossS
      @IvanRossS  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Never do that lol. Torque at this locations not that critical, it's just made so you will not over tight or under tight.. just hand tight guide pins and rotor bolt. Rotor bolt don't do anything besides keeping rotor in place. Now, brake mount braket, you have to tight pretty hard, I hit once or twice it with hammer on wrench. That's it! Only lugs have to be torque!! ! But if you want to be so anal about things you can torque every single bolt

  • @nola442
    @nola442 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Really good video and thank you for doing it, however why are we replacing the rotor when the rotor has a lot of meat left on it? Was it warped? There's a tolerance for thickness on the rotor ... even if it's warped you can bring it to a machine shop and have it turned. Also, use a cheap c-clamp to depress that brake caliper and save some money by not having to buy a special tool kit just to depress the brake caliper.

    • @IvanRossS
      @IvanRossS  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I was doing this for someone who did not want to resurface rotors and one them brand new!!! I rented tool because I was told you can not just press in piston and it have to be screw in withthus tool kit. That was wrong.! So I used it because I had it and futured it in this video. Since I post this video I have done many many brake jobs on different vehicles. I now have my own tool kit like that. I don't rent tools anymore lol. I just buy them because next time I know I'll use again.

  • @slpip

    I would use ventilation holes and slots rotors and ceramic brake pads for better cooling and braking.

    • @williamwalker3471
      @williamwalker3471 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The majority of OEM manufactures have gone away from drilled & slotted rotors as the original purpose was to provide an exit for brake pad gases. New pads are made up of better friction materials & do not build up the gases as the older pads did. Another reason for non-drilled rotors was drilled rotors seemed to develop cracks starting at the holes. Drilled and/or slotted rotors do look better, but you will mostly see them on track cars, where rotors & pads are changed more often.

    Hi, great video. I have 2 questions. What is the type of grease you use on rotor mounting plate and also on brake pad hardware? Where can I get it? And 2nd question is that I bought MB original rotors. They seem to have some protective film on the rotors. Do you know if I need to clean that off the rotors before installing or will it automatically come off once I start driving?

    • @williamwalker3471
      @williamwalker3471 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      In addition...I noticed at the 12:37 minute, the outer brake pad was contaminated with that white grease....appears too much grease was used....you do not need to over grease the brake hardware....
      ...Watch close....you will see that a hanging sting of the grease makes contact with brake pad...this is a no-no....be careful....if you have grease on your gloves, change them.

      thepawneeful Sorry have no idea. Those bolts not really critical for exact torque. Just hand tight them. Don't go crazy on caliper pins, they usualy not tight to hard. Remember 90% of the time torque specs just made so u wouldn't over tight bolt, that's all...

    Your rotors look good. Why did you need to replace them? Were they disbalanced? Vibration?

    • @IvanRossS

      Vibration. That was cost by warp rotor. It actually could be fix by simple resurface but I ended up replacing them. Vehicle wasn't mine. If you have original OEM Mercedes rotors I highly recommend you just simply resurface them it will remove any vibrations. OEM rotors much better then this cheap Chinese rotors. I see now why they charge so much for them at the dealership.

    • @IvanRossS
      @IvanRossS  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      no you don't need to have caliper tool that actually spin the cylinder. if you take a closer look on the video you can see that cylinder does not spin!. I I rent this tool from AutoZone and I got all my money back when I returned it. the reason of that because, I had a tool that didn't work for those type of calipers.. because as you can see on the opposite side of the caliber it's all made out of plastic and if I would use my old tool it will break right through it.

      Lee Murtagh dont pump brakes. Just exit fitting position and then pump all they long :) I highly recommend to resurface your OEM rotors If they still not bad instead of buying crapy aftermarket like I did.. You can resurface your rotors only for $12 at all O'Reilly Auto Parts. Or at your local brake shop for little more, but still you will save alot and end it up haveing original good rotors!!

    • @IvanRossS
      @IvanRossS  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Lee Murtagh yes. Well honestly I don't really know but I would just do procedure backwards! Fittings required to be released because you have electric emergency brake! So even if you pump brakes before you exit the fitting position that shouldn't hurt. When you releasing feelings, you basically preventing to break your emergency brakes system, that all.

    I worked on Rolls Royce. Always a cover on seat, and paper mat on floor. Fender covers. Never wear work gloves inside vehicle (even your own) ; nor touch anything inside with work gloves on; unless new & clean. change out of cover-alls if you've been under a dirty car. Never close hood or touch paint with work gloves on. Don't recommend using imperial tools on a metric vehicle. I believe Mercedes recommend to drop close the hood. Not press on it to close. Many are aluminium !. Finally wash car. Just a few pointers to raise the standard.

    • @IvanRossS
      @IvanRossS  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      they were warped. and they were given vibration and shaking every time you break on the low speed. I could have simply resurface them for $15 each but it would took half a day for the shop to do it. I would have to deliver rotors to them and then pick them up. it's too much work, and I did not have extra vehicle, it was easier just to order brand new... and spend less than an hour for a replacement instead of a half a day

      No lol. They both retracts. And u have to retract them before u starting changing your brakes.
