🛠 Mr. Crunch Multitool, Unboxing and First Look

  • The Leatherman Mr. Crunch is both brilliant...and very lazy. I am annoyed by the fact that they won't fix the fundamental flaws with the magnetic architecture. The plier head though...could be a very good option in the right context.

    Cool design on the pliers. Like most leathermans I would definately make some swaps. A lot of the inner tools seem pointless. Much prefer a pair of scissors, and separate serrated blade replacing some of the redundant flat head/scraper tools. I preferred a pointed awl like the surge has as well.

      @@theoutdoorsman9233 awl sorts of stuff. Lol. But really I don’t use it much either. Occasionally to untie knots or start a hole in wood. Sometimes it’s nice to have a strong “pick” so you’re not damaging the tip of your knife blade. That’s why I preferred the pointed end rather than the flat end, seems to take away the point (pun intended) of an awl.

    This is really underwhelming! The mostly useless eyeglass screwdrivers being one of the outer tools is odd to me and no teeth on the needle nose portion is puzzling as well as the chisel having the package opener look to it. I’m probably going to end up selling mine. And I still can’t get past magnets on a multi tool!

    Thanks for sharing this. Very cool design.
    But i agree with you: from a functional point of view, would have been great to have those blunt nose pliers a bit longer so that the fastener youre working on doesnt hit the wire cutters (even if that meant making the handles a bit longer).
    Would also loved to have seen the large bit driver exchanger and the Leatherman Rev package opener.
    Overall, good idea that i hope they improve with going forward in the Garage platform.

    Thanks for the first look, I’m diggin the mechanism for the plier head.
    To your point of Leatherman not having outside people test products, hopefully the “Garage” idea will allow more feedback from outside users and help create some amazing products. Just worried that because it is a limited run, it will become more of a collectors market, where the tool won’t really get used meaning less feedback given - making the point of the garage meaningless in my mind. Excited for what’s to come tho.

    I do really like the plier head design, even with the cutters that large, I can see how it would be useful for pulling staples or cables. However, I don't believe that the free is the correct platform to have that plier head on, something like the wave or surge might do it better. As someone who uses a chisel daily, the one they put on there is an absolute joke, however the small bit driver is a welcome sight

    Great video, very thoughtful 🧐 but WHYYYY IS IT $200 ?!?!? I can’t see it !!!! It’s a P4 with gadgets 🙈. All the tool sets are the same, some are totally useless, they should have lost the small file, the Philips & the eye glass bit holder, & replaced them with a bit exchanger , a descent large file & something much more useful for actual day2day functionality. It’s like they’re trying to use up the Parts Bin of leftovers. Hmmmmmm
    When are we going to see a totally new design from them!!! Or even a Surge with S30V blades & easy opening pliers ………. C’mon !!

    Coming from someone who EDC’s a Free P4 in my pocket and a Wave + with bit kit in my backpack, I would’ve loved to see the addition of the bit exchanger and a file instead of the redundant chisel.

  • @TheOneInYellow
    @TheOneInYellow 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Fantastic preview, love the honesty and opinions!
    The concept of Mr Crunch is awesome, so when I got emails about it I was envious as it was only a month and a half ago that I purchased the Victorinox Swisstool X Plus (Wrench, and purchased the Ratchet separately).
    Also a month ago I commissioned a custom Victorinox SAK build too (my exit tool as it is very expensive, but built to be my perfect tool to compliment my Swisstool X).
    However your video shows how annoyed I'd be if I had purchased the Mr Crunch; the tools being loose, something that is less of an issue on the P4 but still present, would absolutely ruin my experience using the multitool and may put me off them too. Regardless of how useful the platform is, loose tools in use, and add comparison to my Victorinox, would just infuriate me, and that sucks because Mr Crunch has amazing features and design I genuinely adore.
    The Free series (and similar Leatherman tools, such as Wave+) remains in my mind the ultimate multi-tool for heavy frequent usage in compact form, due to user replaceable parts OR switching out certain tools.
    However the, admittedly long-in-the-tooth yet testament of long-lasting build, designs of the Swisstool and Swisstool Spirit are perfect for lighter, infrequent usage, but still wanting top-end tools in compact form. I love Victorinox quality, precision, and how the tools not only snap and open with smooth operation (albeit fingernail access) but are not loose.
    I agree with you that Leatherman skunkworks ought to have done beta and field testing via external people (signing whatever NDA's of course) to identify and even remedy some of the issues you observed, but I cannot get over how amazing the transforming pliers are! GENIUS USA engineering right there!
    I may still be more in the Swiss camp, but I absolutely admire Leatherman making off-kilter ideas into reality; hopefully feedback from this release will inform them of their next Garage release.
    Moreso I hope they find a solution to the issues in Mr Crunch and offer the lucky owners a program to apply the fixes (hopefully at Leatherman's cost, if only to show their commitment to do right by their loyal fan base).
    If not, then though we may get excited for the next release, we may need to take a pinch of salt too...

    • @maxlvledc

    What a piss poor excuse for a tool. The pliers are cool. I’ll give it that. Other than that it’s terrible given the price. It should have had a premium blade and actual tools like what you would find on a Super Tool instead of the “tools” that come from the kid’s toys known as the Rev, Bolster, Wingman, and Sidekick. On top of that it still has the issue with implements deploying when you set the pliers into position. If they had spent the time they wasted stealing Tale of Knives’ sheath design on designing the Mr. Crunch they could have had a home run. I hate to sound like a prick or a snob but this thing is garbage for the price

      Seriously, you ain't lying... I bought a free p2 when it came out and instantly sold it. My rebar gets beat to shit and keeps going along with my skeletool. Even the curl got sent back because it seemed to be lesser quality and the tolerances on the retention of the different toold was all over the place... I'll stick with the rebar.

      @@thedewdster Rebar is a bit small for my liking. My most carried tool was my Super Tool 300 until Leatherman ripped off Tale of Knives’ sheath design. Since then I’ve been carrying my Victorinox Swiss Tool and have fallen completely in love with it. The overall build quality of the Swiss Tool vs any of my Leathermans is like an 89 Ford Probe compared to a 2022 Lamborghini (the Swiss Tool being the Lambo). I can’t believe I let this tool just sit on a shelf for so long

    I'm not sure Leatherman makes money on this. That needle nose plier and bit driver look like some kind of casting, so you need at least real tooling for this. The Jaw and and handle look like modified (machined) version of current P4. Is the packaging made in USA also? With all said and done, creating only 500 doesn't really take the advantage of higher volume discount either and IF the mods are still being done in USA, it would cost more for sure. I bet they broke even.

Perhaps it is good to handle delicate items like jewelry, glasses, or thing that you don't want to squeeze or mar the surface? As far the blunt/stubby nose pliers, I see that is usefull for changing lawn mower spark plug and axle bolt, and perhaps pulling a nail head.

    Hello, Dominic - Good starting analysis - this is a $200 prototype...this looks like something that would be examined internally including R&D and Marketing, I imagine, with comments made similar to yours in order to go to the next step to come up with a working model to actually test...I think the pliers (no teeth, no grip) on this prototype would twist and/or snap under heavy use...the chisel is a good start and hopefully will be in other tools in the future...the magnets - no, no magnets...it is a waste of time to be constantly cleaning clogged tools...as you demonstrated, the lack of tool retention is really atrocious...it looks really loose...I don't think it was meant to be field tested...a possible risk of losing $200...meant for collectors, not for use as a working tool, imo...looking forward to your next look at it...thanks!

    I watched Texas toil crib discuss tool in his video unfortunately he didn't have one bit just a diagram of how the tool looks,I'm surprised about the pliers,his thoughts were somewhat on par of the needle nose pliers slides off the chuncky jaws,but I will say if you needed them back on there,I think it's neat tool is closed at how it resets itself or goes back into needle nose position when tool is opened,hmm,I may just pick up one if not too expensive to have for my collection an to show off to my buddies who also are Leatherman fans ,I still like some of Gerber stuff,I just wished they had went with better cutters on there multitool, because even if it's a tad to hard, Leatherman cutters do pretty good and don't shatter like Gerber's carbide cutters, could be a heat-treat thing maybe or the steel is just too soft for what you need them to do especially if your paying for something and there not super expensive but still up there,other wise your just throwing money away,I do like that you can rotate them if they don't shatter,lol,but are replaceable too,at least Leatherman replacement cutters do what you need to a point,no there not perfect,but hopefully Leatherman in the future will make a super tool kinda like the surge with nice smooth handle an tools like the wave an surge both have to offer an still keep the exchangeable blade t-shank,that in itself is a awesome feature to have, different cutting blades for different tasks an projects, anyway,I have a surge an I love it,it'll do all of basic things I need done,but also like Texas toil crib said,why keep putting half bits,don't get me wrong,I believe regular bits with the extender would be superior,just my opinion.

  • @Ice_Berg
    @Ice_Berg 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    It seems especially bad for that precision screwdriver to have no retention because of how fragile that bit can be. I worry it might pretty easily come out of position and get caught on something and just snap in half.
    As a hobbyist woodworker I really like the IDEA of the chisel, but I'm not sure how useful it would actually be. It seems especially out of place on a tool where the pliers lend themselves more to mechanical kind of stuff, I think the overlap of people needing blunt nose pliers and needing a wood chisel is pretty small.
