I love how the game now looks like it's from 2003-2004 instead of 1998. Glad that nothing is changed too much. I think maintaining the colour palette especially contributed to keeping the same feel, just like you said.
@@GoodmansGhost Oh shit you're right. I was almost convinced it was from 2001. But that's when ID released the SDK for their idTech 3 engine so I mixed up the two.

the amazing thing with the HD Version is, i have not played DUSK for a few years. and when i jumped back on to play the HD version it felt exactly like i was playing it from before. until you sit it side by side and notice the differences. They Stayed very true to the tone and feel of the game, just giving it a facelift.
Memory is a funny thing. I haven't played Dusk in a while and until you've shown it 1 to 1, I did not notice how much of an upgrade it was. I remembered the game being as good as the remaster showed it lol.
@@KIRKCOLLECTSnow see I thought the game looked like hell when I played it on release. I stopped playing after the 3rd level. I recently booted this up, turned on the pixelation and was surprised the game looked this good. Its like the new game HRot now. The guns models are a huge improvement and looks like a retro game instead of an indie game.
Honestly I think I still prefer the OG and that's the way I would recommend it to newcomers. I could also be an asswipe and nitpick on some changes like the cultists looking too clean and bright, but as an FREE optional update to celebrate 5y of Dusk? This is fantastic, can't knock it down. One more reason to play dusk again sometime.
Now that the HD option has released, and clearly seeing how much the vibe changes, or fleshes out some aspects of the original artistic intent when it's enabled, I really wonder how Jacob McManamy is going to weave it into his artstyle for the remainder of the Dusk Comic (he most probably won't, seeing how it's own distinct identity developed from derivation of the original artstyle for Dusk) The HD pack being optional does question the canonicity of the visual style in the game, but it's nice food for thought. By the way, I do like the detail you are going into for this short retrospective. Worthy of a 5th anniversary, Kirk.
The devs and publishers from this subgenre continue to set such a good example of what a healthier game industry could look like, and I wish more people took notice of how things tend to be done around here
@@johndodo2062 and half assed my ass! Literally every single asset in the entire game is new. Literally couldn't have done more work to the game without straight up just making a free sequel.
How did I just KNOW, as soon as I saw the Dark Claw in the trailer, that it was going to draw from your health as its ammo? I didn’t even see how it worked, I just knew it would do that. Maybe because of all the inspiration Dusk takes from Blood, and that is me staff weapon that pulls from your life for ammo? I don’t know. I guess it was also pretty obvious that they weren’t going to go in and add a whole new ammo type to all the levels, that would just be too much.
There's just something naturally sinister about it I guess. When I first used it I thought "wow this is super OP, this kills the challenge" and then I noticed I was at 2 hp 😆
Spot on review! I want to say the HD textures even match the animations and the existing physics engine of the game more, giving it an Unreal Engine vibe or something close to that era.
@@KIRKCOLLECTS I recall hearing David say that, with regards to more Dusk material/a sequel, he felt he used up all the ideas that he really wanted to use, and wouldn't know what to do to extend it
First I was afraid that the HD update would only be exclusive to the Steam version. But no, GOG release now has the remaster option as well. Finished it just about last week. And it's still as awesome as it was five years ago.
Steam Deck tip: if you have the game on the deck, the game by def uses the linux build - that build doesn't support the HD remke. You need the windows version. Do use it - just turn on your proton to experimental and it will trigger the windows version and pop up the window to pick the HD version.
I love Dusk. I've had it since Day 1 early access, but I barely could play it in my shitty laptop at the time. I still haven't beat the game, but I will one day.
The best part about the remaster is the animations, the models are great but the extra animations help smooth them out and add a bunch of character to the enemies. My favorite addition is the slight "wobbling" that Priestesses do while they hover.
The assault rifle is definitely a huge improvement imo. The original assault rifle always looked more like a paper mache model of a gun to me than an actual gun
I'm a little disappointed that the crossbow's arms still don't flex and release when firing, and I think the BAR would have been a better fit for the assault rifle's fire rate. Still looks stellar, though.
hahahaha take a shot and keep trucking 😂 🤷🏻♂️ Jokes aside, you can deflect those with your sickles! By default they are mapped to clicking the mouse wheel.
Practice your strafe jumping, you can outrun them and guide them into other enemies. That enemy will start attacking the wizard with the homing fireballs and draw its attention while you finish it off. On The Whisperer in Darkness, you can abuse the teleport when you jump off the platform to pull all the existing homing projectiles into the floor. Or just crack two rivets into them as soon as you see them
honestly this is a great idea, if you are using a stupidly over sized ultra wide... [peers at the 49 inch one on desk for sim racing] the low poly games are hard to play i found... not that i don't love them but when you have it running on a 4k monitor it just felt wonky and too jank for me, which hurt so much! the HD pack makes it feel smother on modern monitors at least for me. i really need a good 15 inch monitor for old school jank
I think DUSK would benefit greatly by allowing mods and having Steam Workshop support. I can see lots of talented creators making expansions, custom levels and other things
Funny how this game as you playing as an invisible man yet because you're still holding weapons the enemies can still easily see you XDXDXDXDXDXDXDXDXDXD
the only real problem i have with dusk hd is the super shotgun the og dusk made it super slim which was cool and it fell really powerfull but the hd version is big and bulky but with less punch overall is still really love dusk hd

This modelpack is in every way perfect, except for one thing. The position of the hunting rifle SUUUUCKS. It's way too far ahead and looks really out of place.
I'm not entirely a fan of the new HD pistol. The whole aesthetics echo old, first half of the 20th century sort of feel, and the new pistol is just a High-Point, which is a relatively new firearm. Something like a Colt model 1903 pocket hammerless would've had a similar shape to the old pistol while also having the old, rustic feel to it.
It's not a hi point at all. Hi points are bigger. Its a striker fired pistol similar to a lorcin/cobra Saturday night special. The shotguns are lever action rifles, it fits in with the campiness of the game. I would have preferred to see a grizzled old antique pistol for the model or something like that.
The original riveter didn't feel like metal straps but steel poles welded together to hold the barrel. That made it feel much heavier and solid thus more powerful. The HD remake is great but it highlights what I hated with early 2000 games. They tried adding lighting and more detailed textures with shine. But the reflecting was off putting, the lighting very bare and worst was that no baked shading or lighting meant bland blank textures. It was Unity assets. Best example is Quake 2 vs ray tracing. Flat boring surfaces and bleak look compared to stylized and hard drawn shadows giving it a style. I take a bad WoW clone over 10 good asian bland looking MMOs just for the colorful art style any day.
the level action shotgun is legit nowhere near a winchester 1887, its a totally different winchester, not an expert on them but its the 357 magnum or similar ones, basically a rifle and not a shotgun. kinda annoying to me but whatever.
I won't lie, the thing I liked least about DUSK was the actual texture work. It wasn't bad but considering how amazing the other game aspects were, I found this was the weakest aspect. DUSK HD fixes this aspect and puts it on par with the rest. DUSK HD > DUSK original.
As on OG Half-Life player I'm gonna stick up for the HD models. I think they're better than the original, and never play without them enabled, but to each their own. Now Half-Life: Source...we can unite on that being a giant whale dump.

The pistol is also completely different here, which I'm almost 100% sure was intentional as a joke. The pistol is also changed to a Hi-Point, one of the worst pistols of all-time. Definitely intended as a joke on HL1HD.
Not a fan of changing weapons models already established in games. Better resolution is one thing, but changing the entire look (like hunting rifle) is pretty lame.
Half-Life HD models is clearly far superior...it doesn't change the feel of Half-Life like the Black Mesa remake. It's still graphics of the era (same as the expansion pack and PS2 release), just much better. And it makes way more sense for an under-barrel grenade launcher to be on an M4 / M16 than on an MP5. Dusk released with very ugly graphics I recall. Not just because it's going for a Quake 1 vibe, because Quake 1 looks a lot better. It's good for its era, while Dusk wouldn't have looked good even in 1996. So an HD models version similar to Half-Life is probably going to be a big improvement, even if it's only "HD" in the sense that models look like they're from 2001 instead of 1996.
Please God can we get dusk released on a real console, once I played quake on the full tv I'm never going back. But the only port is for Nintendos lil dinosaur turd
In my opinion most of the new models detract from the atmosphere. Some of the texture upgrades are nice, and I also like the smooth tunnels but other than that, I’m sticking with classic
I will still never understand the hype about this game. The non-story, the shitty-feeling weapons against overly tanky enemies, the GODAWFUL original graphics that somehow still looks better than the remake cause it's more faithful to that retro look at least.. I could go on. That game and Amid Evil are absolute trash tier to me, someone who has played every damn boomer shooter back when they were first a thing, so not someone who "doesn't get it." I am really not trying to be having a hot take or get outrage comments or whatever, I am genuinely baffled here. The game is basically a poor man's Blood, and Blood would be my 2nd most overrated boomer shooter ever, I guess that's what it is. But seriously, it isn't even close to Blood, for that matter. Not by a long shot. Games like Prodeus, Ion Fury, WH40k Boltgun, Ultrakill, Cultic, Turbo Overkill... these are all INFINITELY better and more fun than Dusk. What is the deal, seriously?
