The issue I have with John Connor is they keep replacing the actor it makes it difficult to care about a character that changes every 2 hours of screen time.
The biggest issue was imho that in T3 they replaced a resourceful, intelligent and brave character with a random, ill-talented, cowardly goon which was a fashion in early 2000s but made character unbelievable. Another problem was that they turned terminator from a believable machine with real world's limitations to a superhero and it only went worse after that. If you liked John Connor from T-2, you should read 'The Test' by Lem, also known as 'The Inquest of Pilot Pirx'. It's about a smart and brave man who needs to recognize an android before the latter has a chance to kill him.
I begged my mom to rent the first Terminator for my 8th birthday sleepover party, which was the last time she did such a thing from all the nightmares and sleepless nights that followed. It was definitely a horror movie through my eyes back then!!! 😂
Yeah, it's because Cameron understood about the Terminators and about the other characters. After T2, none of the Terminator movies had an emphasis on neither of them.
If they make a reboot of the Terminator only thing you have to do is based it around the TV show. The Sarah Connor Chronicles. It had everything what Terminator is all about
That should've been T3, Salvation was weak. Michael Biehn returns as an older John Connor would be a twist. Kyle Reese would shine in this movie having to stop the Machines from sending a T back in time to kill Sarah/John and destroying the Time Displacement Machine and destroying Skynet for once and for all.
Great video on the Terminator franchise and love your approach to the reviews - great blend of information and opinion that is based on the every-person, rather than "I know great writing, but I'm not a writer." :) Plus the sarcasm is on point :) Well done!
Great video on the Terminator series. The first two were classics. You are right that everytime a new Terminator comes out, it makes us appreciate the previous ones. Terminator 3 was mediocre when it released but now it doesn't seem so bad compared to Genysis or Dark Fate.
The most important thing they could have done is finally make a movie based on the Future War and make that as the end which would lead to the events of the first movie. If anything Genesys could have been that but decided to make it only as the opening sequence. Instead they rehash the plot of the first movie with new faces & the villian as another X variant of T1000. That is where they are failing and the Reason for failing as franchise.
I recently rewatched all of the Terminator movies to update my ranking, And I actually rank them from best to worst in the exact chronological order that they came out, And I must say that Terminator 3 has aged well, and was more entertaining & better than I remembered.
In seventh grade. We had a great english teacher. Whom let us see T2 in class 😁 After, we each wrote a paper on different selected topics from what we personally took from the viewing experience. Excellent 🤣
Seeing this video after just watching the Terminator Zero trailer from Netflix which looks a million times better than anything after T2. BTW, I would really like to see James Cameron and Arnold reunite for something new. Even if it’s not Terminator related.
T3 was the perfect sequel to the first 2 Terminator films. Yes, the nukes go off and humanity is screwed, having to fight for survival against the machines in a post apocalyptic world. The last scene from T3 with the nukes going off everywhere is so friggin powerful. It was the perfect ending to what should've remained a trilogy!
@@John231984But that message, while powerful and well conveyed, doesn't really work as we are constantly show humanity's nature is to destroy itself. That's why Judgment Day is inevitable.
A small criticism. In describing the years of development to Terminator 2 you suggest that Cameron briefly lost interest in Terminator, but you don't return to this point to fill in how or why he got back involved again. Ultimately, only the first two Terminator films feel 'real' to me. The rest just feel like a cash in that has to prolong a story that's really already concluded. I think I'm not alone in that with each new Terminator film I expect maybe to have a fun time on a shallow level, but not really expect the story to advance in a way that matters. I enjoyed Terminator 3. It was weak sauce compared to its predecessors, but more entertaining than much else on at the cinema that year. In hindsight I'd have loved to see what the planned back to back sequel would've been like and where it would've gone with the future war angle. Terminator Salvation I have to say just came off a bit soulless and forgettable to me. It barely felt like a Terminator film at all, and more like some random post apocalyptic script they'd sloppily grafted Terminator elements to. I remember someone telling me to check out the better extended cut, but I never got to. Frankly I can't say of the ones after ever made me reappreciate Salvation. Terminator Genesys I actually found quite fun, although I'll happily admit it is largely timey-wimey fanservice that misses the simplicity of the first two. I liked Emilia Clarke in it, and appreciated she was playing a very different Sarah Connor indeed. But the supposed trilogy that was meant to spawn from it, I have to say I can't see where it could possibly go next. I feel like really Genesys ticked all the boxes for a conclusion and really should've been left as one. Terminator Dark Fate I just hated in the end. I think Cameron was right in principle about discounting the films since T2. It would've worked (like I said about how only the first two felt real and canonically important) and it was the right thing to do. Except the finished product just makes me wish they never bothered and had just ended it on Genesys instead. The action scenes themselves were good and engaging, the directing I couldn't really fault. But the script was just so obnoxiously wrong. A redeemed, domesticated Terminator who hasn't even been reprogrammed but just somehow felt guilty. A Sarah Connor who is at once bereaved at the death of her son, and yet suddenly seems to gag at the idea of male saviours. I literally sense the actors choking on the lines they were given. It was just so awful, and needn't have been. It honestly felt like it despised the franchise & its fans After that I just didn't care.
I'd love to see a video where you compare and contrast sequels with their original. It doesn't have to be _Empire Strikes Back_ or _Godfather II,_ (God forbid GF3.) But the reasons they often disappoint and the times when they pulled the whole franchise up by their shorts are fun, gossipy tales where everyone wants to take credit. It'd be fun to see your analysis.
T2 was crazy on its release. Just wish Jim come back to it with some good writers and pushed out a third maybe before true lies and even a fourth after titanic.
Blame producers and directors. If there is a penny to be squeezed out of a franchise then it will be squeezed. Almost every franchise since the era of ratings began has been tarnished by overkill ; Jaws, Star Wars, Airport, Terminator, and others. Film makers don’t respect the intelligence of the public. Look at what Disney has done to their classics. That’s why I like physical ownership of my favorite movies. I don’t have to watch or purchase the sequels if don’t want to. I know what’s a good movie and I know a bad movie. Hollywood is scared to make bold movies that only need one film to tell a story. Can you imagine The Godfather, part 13 ?
I love the movie Three Days to Kill with Kevin Costner so don't talk trash about that. Also my favorite Terminator movie outside of Terminator 1 and Terminator 2 I do like Terminator 3 I really really like Terminator Genisys because it combined the first and the second and had more of an original story than any of the others by playing with time travel which is exactly what the whole series is about the only problem was the two main stars were really really miscast and therefore they should have had different primary stars and I think it would have done better
What killed Terminator as franchise was that after T2 they hired only primary school dropouts to write scripts. Unbelievable psychology, totally wrong science and huge plotholes.
Terminator could have been a good franchise IF it had stuck with the predestination paradox for time-travel rules. Say that the sequels after T2 focused on the coming war against the machines & Skynet, see John Connor becoming the leader of the human resistance, the relationship between John and Kyle, and then finally arriving at the events that would see the time-loop being completed. Despite what James Cameron says, T2 actually leaves off on an ambiguous note that makes one wonder if they truly prevented Judgement Day, and I am on the side that they only ensured it. I have evidence to prove that is the case. Think of the first film where Skynet ensures John's conception, while the second ensures Skynet's.
The first Terminator is the only one worth watching in my opinion. Arnie was perfect as the baddie. In the film they said the Terminator T800s were hard to spot as they had real flesh etc, but they all seem to look like Arnie so surely easy to spot?
When I saw trailer for Salvation I knew it would flop because it showed desert. Anytime a movie show fight scenes in desert it usually don't work out well because it is boring.
There is definitely a way to revive the franchise. The Sarah Connor chronicles was an excellent show that was canceled way too soon. Lena Headey is a big star now after her turn on Game of Thrones. Schwarzenegger needs to be left in the past and the torch needs to be passed to her. Even John Connor and Linda Hamilton need to pass the torch. The show is part of Canon, which the nerds seem to be obsessed with. None of the stars of that show are doing anything of importance right now it would be perfect. They’re bringing back all kinds of shows that have been dead and buried for years, why not terminator?
I didn’t see this movie in the theater, it didn’t look very good and plus I was pissed they didn’t have Edward furlong attached to it. The kid has some good acting chops, great potential I just wish she was given more of a chance. Kristana Loken was very beautiful during that time, Still is but I never saw her as menacing. Oddly enough in the movie species, Natasha Henstridge was actually very scary. Because she came off as so sweet, she played on her sexuality, beauty, innocence. That’s what made her terrifying is that you think you’re going to get lucky with this beautiful blonde and the next thing you know you got a tongue punching out the back of your head. Maybe they should’ve picked Natasha Henstridge for that role? But also it’s a lot on the writing and directing. They didn’t give Loken a lot to work with. At least the tea 1000 was able to pull off human emotions and mannerisms like when he was talking to the foster parents, He played the officer friendly role pretty well but then he could be dark and menacing. I think if Kristana Loken played up that sort of mimicking human emotions but also switched to a stone cold Killer that would’ve definitely helped but she was so robotic, no pun intended. And Arnold Schwarzenegger felt like he was mimicking the terminator on the second movie. And the way the film looked, it lacked that blue tint that made terminator two so enjoyable, it looked like it was shot in digital. It was just very clean. And also the Chase sequence felt very small, there was no traffic out there and it looked like the whole street was abandoned. It literally felt like a TV movie chase scene from the 90s on lifetime. To wear terminator two felt very heavy and dark, terminator three felt very light and there was too much comedy. Yes the ending has a dark finale but I don’t know it didn’t work for me. I honestly thought that Gabriel Luna in Dark Fate was probably the best evil terminator since the T1000. I loved how he pulled off the Texan accent when he was disguised as the Border Patrol agent. He brought some good lines.
It is hard to follow the first two. Everything was basically done that could be done. A movie based in the future was the only real option and only Salvation has done it although it did it poorly IMO.
unfortunately the video is just chronilogical state of events, with very little analysis, to why the franchise failed. Terminator has the same problem as alien: they are trying to recreate the expierience of the original movies, ignoring that you only can reveal the terminator or the alien once and then offer a different approach on the same concept the 2nd time. (Alien is basically a horror movie, while Aliens was an action movie, you could say the same about Terminator. T2 is basically T1 with a liquid Terminator.) After that you have to ask yourself what the universe has to offer, worth exploring and resist the urge to recreate the first movies. That's why Salvation is actually not that bad: it tried to tell a story, that is build upon the possibility of the universe and possible conflicts as a whole and not the desperate attempt to recreate the surprise moments of the franchises genysis.
I respectfully disagree with Cameron about "Terminator Genisys." Bad casting and an evil John Connor really hurts that one. Honestly, after the first two films in the series, "Terminator Salvation" is the only sequel that isn't seriously flawed.
Why those actors you ask? It's pretty obvious answer.. GOOD actors knew that the script was garbage and could smell the movie poop potential! They were the only capable actors available who wanted to do it, or needed the work. Basically they just went to work to do a job to get paid, that's it.
Terminator writers thinks the story is about time travelling loop with horror Yes it was for the first two movies only But the fans wants to know how John conner become the man and defeated the robots Not the same story over and over again All they hav6to de us make a flim entirely based on John Conner, Than a fkim entirely based on the T-800 model And the last movie the war of the world robots vs human That's it
the reason why edward furlong wasnt in the movie was because he celebrated by being cast with drugs and overdosed, my source is an interview with furlong himself
"What made the first 2 movies the highest grossing films in Hollywood?" James Cameron, and an awesome writing team. Why did the rest fail? Because they were crap. They changed the story, and were pretty much in existence for one purpose: to screw moviegoers out of their hard earned cash.
too much movies and the true is, that Terminator could be nice trilogy if only 3rd part would be like Salvation, in the future but directed by Cameron and with final closing all saga in one cicle.
@@Hollywood_Lore It wasn't too loud. The end part was sounding like Despacito - only music track maybe modulated or something. It was weird. I will listen to it again and give you specific timestamp.
@@Hollywood_Lore Final part is 100% despacito with instruments swapped. I know that earworm pretty good. Play it on one headphone and your vid on the other, synchro and you will hear it.
If they make another terminator, the bad guy needs to be the younger guy that works for Mr Dyson, he would be introduced to the film from behind and the camera would pan around his head showing him sucking on his lollipop, the camera pans away to his computer showing what looks like what Dyson was working on in t2 , it turns out that he was stealing and backing up the ciberdynefiles on his own computer in his moms basement,
Its allways the beginning of the end when any franchise, series or genre becomes a comedy. Hero Indiana Jones, the ultimate Adventure series becomes ironic (Crystall Skull) or a joke (last movie). Star Wars became garbage by too much wokeism and characters. Zombies were that pure scare between 78 and 83 and then Zombies became just jokes. Vampyres were scaring and then became funny or "College Models". And Terminator 84 was pure thrill and Action, 91 it was pure Action and surprising, Rise of the Machines was OK and Genesis was fun bec Arnold makes his role more funny (but with serious meaning, too), after that it became just a Money making thing without soul. Lethal weapon all movies were cool bec in part 3 and 4 Riggs and Murtaugh made some jokes about their age...
I was a huge fan from the first day/movie on, was surprised by the T2 (how this bad unstoppable machine can be a good saviour?), third one was OK, normal Action movie, never saw Salvation (No Arnold, no interest), genesis was cool bec Arnold as older Terminator, great CGI, Arnolds sense of Humour and these great rememberances to 84 where they made the scenes identic...Dark fate: No, i dont want to see a Terminator filled with female heros (Disney woke style) and "retirement home T 800 and Sarah Connor".
No, its a cool Action movie. Bit Terminator feeling and some cool ideas (the high end Terminatrix, Dr.Silverman, Arolds self joking meaning of the T 800, esp at the Ladys Night scene etc.)
@@NeoConnor1Arnold's voice was shaky because he was too old. John was not convincing, and the female terminator was utterly unconvincing. She can grow huge breasts. Wow.

No more Terminator films unless they do it about the war between skynet and mankind.
It is hard to follow the first two. Everything was basically done that could be done. A movie based in the future was the only real option and only Salvation has done it although it did it poorly IMO.
I loved T1 and T2 the rest are not my cup of tea so i wont be back
unfortunately the video is just chronilogical state of events, with very little analysis, to why the franchise failed.
Asape?
I dont care who judge me.
Salvation was a good movie 💁💁
Why those actors you ask? It's pretty obvious answer.. GOOD actors knew that the script was garbage and could smell the movie poop potential! They were the only capable actors available who wanted to do it, or needed the work. Basically they just went to work to do a job to get paid, that's it.
Interesting.
Yeah some of the sequels have their moments but there will never be anything stepping in front of the first two.
Terminator writers thinks the story is about time travelling loop with horror
Yes it was for the first two movies only
But the fans wants to know how John conner become the man and defeated the robots
Not the same story over and over again
All they hav6to de us make a flim entirely based on John Conner,
Than a fkim entirely based on the T-800 model
And the last movie the war of the world robots vs human
That's it
the reason why edward furlong wasnt in the movie was because he celebrated by being cast with drugs and overdosed, my source is an interview with furlong himself
"What made the first 2 movies the highest grossing films in Hollywood?" James Cameron, and an awesome writing team. Why did the rest fail? Because they were crap. They changed the story, and were pretty much in existence for one purpose: to screw moviegoers out of their hard earned cash.
I know I'm in the minority, but I enjoyed Terminator Salvation
Ooookayyyyyy 👀

To be honest, T3, T5 and t6 are just a copy of story od t2, which was copy of t1 with t800 as good guy. Only salvation was orginal but was shitty
Should have stopped after the first 2, movies , this is were greed of a studio ruined 2 classic movies
too much movies and the true is, that Terminator could be nice trilogy if only 3rd part would be like Salvation, in the future but directed by Cameron and with final closing all saga in one cicle.
Yes, T1, T2, and maybe Salvation: those are the best of the series.
Nah it ain’t dead
I mean Arnold can only live so long you know? lol! Of course the terminator series is gonna die.
Is that Despacito at the end of video?
I hope not 😂
@@Hollywood_Lore That was my point... I had my headphones and for some reason i was humming Despacito.... 2019 earworm.
@@qbatmobilewas music too loud for your headphones? I still can’t find sweet spot of volume for background music…
If they make another terminator, the bad guy needs to be the younger guy that works for Mr Dyson, he would be introduced to the film from behind and the camera would pan around his head showing him sucking on his lollipop, the camera pans away to his computer showing what looks like what Dyson was working on in t2 , it turns out that he was stealing and backing up the ciberdynefiles on his own computer in his moms basement,
Things change over time sometimes you can never make a movie as great terminator 3 is grabbage trash no Edward furlong trable
God dark fate was total shit. Cameron should be ashamed from that woke and cancel trash
Franchises are not possible. Terminator 2 was the best.
should've stopped after T2.
No True Lies? Ghastly
Terminator dark fate was by far the worst Terminator movie ever made
I was a huge fan from the first day/movie on, was surprised by the T2 (how this bad unstoppable machine can be a good saviour?), third one was OK, normal Action movie, never saw Salvation (No Arnold, no interest), genesis was cool bec Arnold as older Terminator, great CGI, Arnolds sense of Humour and these great rememberances to 84 where they made the scenes identic...Dark fate: No, i dont want to see a Terminator filled with female heros (Disney woke style) and "retirement home T 800 and Sarah Connor".
The Terminator was good. T 2 was great, and Terminator 3 was as awful as Rocky 5.
No, its a cool Action movie. Bit Terminator feeling and some cool ideas (the high end Terminatrix, Dr.Silverman, Arolds self joking meaning of the T 800, esp at the Ladys Night scene etc.)
Did you really just compare Terminator 3 to ROCKY V?!?!?!?!?
You're kidding, right? T3 is at least entertaining. Rocky V was a mess.
@@NeoConnor1Arnold's voice was shaky because he was too old. John was not convincing, and the female terminator was utterly unconvincing. She can grow huge breasts. Wow.
You can make a distinct correlation between the fall of Terminator is the exact time it went woke 😂 T3 onwards
Woke wasn't even a thing in 2003. Get off it.
