WATCHMEN: the Movie that was NEVER supposed to Happen
Bringing Watchmen to the big screen was a journey almost as dark as the comicbook story itself. Over 20 years, the adaptation passed through multiple studios, directors, and drastically different visions-at one point involving time travel and the Iraq War. Arnold Schwarzenegger was nearly cast as Dr. Manhattan, and Robin Williams was considered for the team.
In this video, we explore the long, chaotic process of turning Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons' iconic graphic novel into a movie, uncovering what went wrong, what almost happened, and how the impossible finally became reality.

He's been at the top of my all time favs ever since I watched him in Xena playing Julius Caesar - again, nailed the part. Whenever I think of Julius Caesar to this day, I think of the one Karl Urban played. Btw, I think his Caesar was way cooler (and attractive) than cupid, but he did great as cupid too.
Gotta have a Dredd sequel!!
Death to smoochie was amazing.
Love the understated humor, great video
Zack Snyder's Watchmen is burdened with flaws, chief among them being Zack Snyder. Moore and Gibbons presented action that was not comic-book fisticuffs, but something that tended to be much uglier, scarier and realistic. Instead, Snyder has a character jump onto the roof of a burning building, fall through the roof and make a lovely, glossy slo-mo 3-point landing on the floor beneath. Doing that would have killed the real person that character was intended to represent.
You got that rectal itch too? Sometimes I have to get a fork to itch my butthole. I put it right back in the utensil drawer though, all buttered up.
He's had a great career to be honest. Even if he's not known as mainstream as he could have been. Glad he stuck with it.
13:06 Goode is perfect casting, considering for 2008 the Superman face was Brandon Routh and he and Goode look very alike, and in comics Ozymandias and Superman have exactly the same face per Gibbons. Also Ozy's costume in ZS version is closest to Joel Schumacher style version of Superman, especially if you recolor it and ad S symbol, and for people who don't know in original comics neither Shuster nor Kane painted nipples on half naked Clark or Bruce so the whole "nipples" thing is actually valid take considering that costume supposed to be so skin tight that if you recolor it into skin color it would be exactly the same - logo, which is also real reason for "trunks" too. Also Zack's Dollar Bill is the only red trunks in the movies that are like in Superman actual comics. Ironically.
11:23 he is such a pretentious hypocritical bag it is absolutely insane, if you read his 1988 interview he was absolutely ecstatic about Watchmen movie idea. But it is not the first case of him being completely wrong or clueless, his commentary on Weisinger's "influence" on Superman is a testament itself just how full of it at least current Moore truly is when it comes to even objective facts, not even in terms of mental gymnastics about "comics format intended".
Out of all A listers Eg - leo , cruise , pitt , Clooney etc. Pitt has the most diverse and exciting filmography his movies from seven to adastra is remarkable. Note he is successful even without doing any great franchise film or any big director like Scorsese , Spielberg or Cameroon.
Doooood Pathfinder was SO. GOOD!!!!!! If you haven't seen it, it's really worth giving a chance!!!
Bro he did Hard Boiled right before he went to Hollywood to make Hard Target (another masterpiece).
Karl got the job on Chronicles of Riddick because he showed up with that haircut, completely in character.
American History X one of the most iconic movies in cinematic history? Whilst i appreciate your video, this statement shows you cant have watched many movies. Its a great movie, but way down on the iconic list. And whilst his Oscar loss was undeserved, i can think of many many others that were bigger injusticies. At least thay year also had McKellan and Nolte nominated who always give solid performances.
Do you guys really think that Spies Like Us was directed by Terry Gilliam.. ?
I love the Hudson Hawk. I think it's funny enough and goofy enough, well not great, but nice and cozy.
Gosh, this voice! Of all the voices you use, this is definitely the worst. Every sentence is articulated to the max, which makes nothing stand out. Not going to finish watching the video as it the voice is so distracting and cheesy. Completely botching the pronunciation of Jean Reno too. So embarrassing. Is this an AI voice?
His 5th wife who’s also his 3rd wife
well it was released over 10 years ago. The only good thing was a prettier version of Lucy Lawless
This movie is in my top 20
Wow. Edward Norton looks exactly like Adolf Hitler in the still for this video. If anyone needed to cast a dead ringer for yet another Nazi story, definitely take a close look at Mr. Norton’s features.
I’d say ‘pretty good’ is a generous assessment of the ZackS. film.
I haven’t seen the directors cut of it (didn’t know how troubled the production was, or that so much had been cut so thank you @hollywood_lore for sharing the story!), but I felt like the theatrical release really missed the point of the graphic novel. 😢
Babylon is a masterpiece and i won’t accept any differing opinions
I have never felt so appreciation to Fincher than when finding out he refused to cast Courtney Love in FIght Club. Thank you from saving the movie from that.
12 monkeys was his best
I love The Rock!😊
Really good video - i enjoyed watching this
It's like any other celebrity with questionable character but conventionally attractive looks. Pitt's acting or 'versatility' isn't something of significance; he essentially has the same presence in each film - except wearing a different costume/makeup
Universal Soldier: Day of Reckoning was actually such a sick film. Very under-rated IMO. The fight scenes are so visceral and raw in there.
Children were totally allowed to watch it you dork. It’s called going into another movie. It’s called anyone with you who appears 17 and you’re all in. It’s called going into another movie. That was our Star Wars. No film came close to the amount of psychotic amazing perfect shit they pulled off. It still looks perfect today. It looks like it was made tomorrow. Nothing else would ever live up to these first two because they were so obviously going to be awful. Too much time had gone by and we were like naw.
I can assure you, there was just a fall.
before cavill was karl. karl is a better actor overall too.
Watchmen Chapter I / II (2024/2025) is the best way to adapt Watchmen and a good way to adapt some comics or comic strips. I'd love to see them using this cel-shading technique to adapt Alex Raymond's Flash Gordon, Neal Adams' Batman, Len Wein and Bernie Wrightson's Swamp Thing etc.
He would be a great James bond
Gerry. Try different things and never give up he does action movie and cartoon and modeling and has done other movies. He is fantastic actor and producer.
I really live Spy Game
Motherless Brooklyn surprised me a lot and remains my favorite of his in recent memory, but Wes Anderson world is always a unicorn in itself. Motherless Brooklyn was also the second movie Norton directed, and wrote. It's a New York China Town. I loved it.
ZS: This is the greatest masterpiece ever ZS: eh.. that feels too goofy, ol timey and nerdy, lets make it more like 2000's digital action slop.
yeah .. I don't think Afghanistan is moving the nuclear clock in any timeline
But the Biden government definitely is...
Watchmen is Zack's magnum opus ! It's a MASTERPIECE.
" like a true aikido master, seagal declined and left " lol that was a good one
Who watches the watchmen... I do😜
I actually think the movie is pretty good with the exception of the ending. I don't think they should have changed the ending by deleting the squid.
Zack Snyder is King
Karl is cool
I want to be in the universe where JCVD is JOHNNY FUCKING CAGE in '95 MK
This movie is incredible. The changes they made to the story fit well and worked. I don't know if it's possible to make a better version of the graphic novel into film.
What am i missing here, is the cost of the movie not the "budget" and everything after is profit for the studio and producers and royalty holders? How is raking in twice the cost not a success?
Considering all the obstacles until this movie could be done, I must say that the result is 100% how it should be. From the excellent cast to the brilliant visuals and the adherence to the graphic novel, this is the best comic-based movie as of today.
Am I the only one who dislikes text-to-speech channels? No wonder the majority of Americans voted for Trump. People will happily accept dumb
