- सरखेल कान्होजी राजे आंग्रे यांचे वर्णन internet वर 'pirate' म्हणजे समुद्रचाचा असा केल्याने समाजमाध्यमांवर तीव्र विरोध झाला. आणि शिवप्रेमींनी मोठ्या संख्यने निषेध नोंदवल्याने हा 'pirate' असा उल्लेख गाळून टाकावा लागला.
सन १६५४ मध्ये छत्रपती शिवाजी महाराजांच्या दूरदृष्टी धोरणातून मराठ्यांच्या आरमाराची स्थापना झाली. तेव्हा पश्चिम किनाऱ्यावर सतत आक्रमणं होत होती. Portuguese, Dutch, English, हबशी या सगळ्यांच्या हाता खाली पश्चिम किनारपट्टी होती. पण या सगळ्यात पोर्तुगीजांची ताकद सर्वात जास्त होती. या समुद्रात जर जहाजं न्यायची आणायची असतील तर पोर्तुगीजांचे licence म्हणजे परवाना लागत असे. पोर्तुगीज त्याला Cartez अस म्हणत.
आपल्या समुद्रावर आणि तिथल्या किनारपट्टीवर हा परकीयांचा अम्मल मोडून स्वराज्य बळकट करण्यासाठी महाराजांनी आरमाराची स्थापना केली. 1698 साली छत्रपती राजाराम महाराजांनी कान्होजी आंग्रे याना आरमार प्रमुख म्हणजेच सरखेल या पदावर नियुक्त केले. कान्होजी आंग्रेंच्या नेतृत्वाखाली, मराठी आरमारात, मुंबई जवळील खांदेरी पासून ते दक्षिणेला वेंगुरल्या पर्यंत संबंद समुद्रकिनारा मराठ्यांच्या ताब्यात आला. याच दरम्यान इंग्रजांचा आणि मराठ्यांच्या आरमाराचा संघर्ष झाला आणि इंग्रज कान्होजी राजेंना Pirate असं म्हणू लागले
The description of Sarkhel Kanhoji Raje Angre on the internet as a 'pirate', sparked strong protests on social media. And as followers of Shivaji Maharaj protested in large numbers, the mention of 'pirate' had to be deleted.
In 1654, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj through his visionary policy established the Maratha army. At that time there were constant attacks on the west coast. Portuguese, Dutch, English, Ethiopians all had the west coast under their hands. But in all these the Portuguese had the greatest strength. If ships were to be brought into this sea, a license from the Portuguese was required.
In order to break the stranglehold of the foreigners on our seas and on its coasts, the Shivaji Maharaj established Armara.
In the year 1698, Chhatrapati Rajaram Maharaj appointed Kanhoji Angre to the post of Navy chief i.e. Sarkhel. Under the leadership of Kanhoji Angre, in Maratha Navy, the Marathas captured the entire coastline from Khanderi near Mumbai to Vengurla in the south.
This was the time when, there was a conflict between the British and the Maratha armies and the British started calling the Kanhoji Angre as Pirate.
