I've always thought the reason that the asari are addressed as female trough the game (even when it's a conversation between two asaris) and that Aethyta is called Liara's "father" is because you hear the game trough Shepard's ears and translator. The words asari use to talk about themselves and the second parent simply doesn't exist in the other languages so it is translated by the closest equivalent.
Probably, then I assume that the one asari in ME:A saying that some asari gravitate toward gender-neutral pronuns or male pronuns is just accepting of other species' languages. That or your theory is wrong, who knows.
Asari can give birth with another species aswell. But the child always born as an Asari female. They also take only good genes from those other species. This way they expending their gene pool with superior traits.
Actually, a citadel language is likely to exist as a lingua franca. A blend of the languages used by the races on the citadel, but primarily Asari and Salarian. Followed by Volus and turian influence
"there are semi-flexible cardlich based sclup cress that grow in shape. And they don't flap around." I think this quote had to fond place in this video :)
A popular turian saying really highlights how deadly asari are in combat. "The asari are the finest warriors in the galaxy. Fortunately, there are not many of them."
Asari are incredibly smug for a race that was gifted so much by the protheans only to become dancers and mercenaries for most of their lives. Instead of realizing the protheans were doing so much to warn them of the reaper threat they just couldn't stop worshiping them enough to realize it.
I used to dislike the Asari as a whole due to them having such a cold view of relationships. However, there was one Asari in ME2 who was seen heartbroken because of a picture, which was the only memory of the father to her child, being gone. The father was a Salarian and they live very short lifespans. I thought the encounter was a very touching scene which showed that not all Asari had this cold view of relationships. And just for the record, there are many exceptions to Asaris I like, most notebly being Liarra
Wasn't that Asari with a human? I remember the description saying it was a human male she was with who died when I picked up the picture on a mission. I think you may have gotten it confused with the Salarian and his Asari daughter at the market.
Some Asari breed with Vorcha and most likely Vorcha had died of old age before Asari child was fully grown (assuming slightly slower speed to sexual maturity).
Well i'm assuming that since dick were never evolved for their race that means no, but the whole mind melding thing might be just as good if not more so.
Liara is the best romance option, followed by Tali and then Garrus. The people voted, Tali fans lost. That and... photostock image - can you feel it? Deep down? Nagging at you?

Most don't know that the space age after ww2 was fueled by Nazi scientist taking from Germany during the war by both the Russians and the Western Allies the operation for the western allies was Operation Paper Clip where they gave amnesty to Nazi scientist that had allot to offer whether it be synthetic materials, nuclear and Jet tech or even computers. A piece of tech that came out of 1940s Germany was the tape and tape recorder which they used to record Hitler's speeches and play them in cities across Germany and German held lands that is why the Allies could not just assassinate him because it was hard to track his movements and locations. I have a hankering feeling that the United States found more at Roswell then just a bunch of wreckage but intact tech that the US used to develop tech fast, just look at how fast tech advances today, go buy a PC at a store and it will be outdated before you rig out at the cash register that is how fast technology advances, this didn't occur until the 1950s where computers began getting more advanced and smaller to the point they can be made into a USB device or in everyone's homes. To put it into perspective it was like in Mass Effect where humanity found the ruins on mars that jumped technology forward 200 years something like that happened in the 1950s and the fact that as soon as other life other than our own is ever asked to the government they automatically say no because they are more than likely lying.
Great videos, I'm watching them before playing ME:A as my first ME game, don't have much time to play the others and I'm curious about the lore. Would be great to have an quick overview of all the races in one video and later we could watch each separately. Like when you talk in this video about one race that I never saw before it get hard to understand, but other than that, great content, just what I'm looking for.
Cassio Cabral you gotta go back and play the originals. The first one is a little tedious seeing as how the the gameplay is a pretty dated, but the 2nd and especially the 3rd are phenomenal.
Cassio Cabral one aspect of the originals that wasn’t included in Andromeda is the ability to command your squad mates giving you the ability to combine your abilities and powers which made combat more dynamic and potent.
you disrespectful knob! Your first ME game is Andromeda? That's like starting the Alien franchise with Alien 3. Play the games in the correct order or don't play them at all!
It is never mentioned how efficiently Asari are able to breed and how fast they become able to do so. Justicar Samara had three children and they were all fully grown so there is not much reference. If they would breed like humans (one child/year) each Asari could potentially produce hundreds of children or at least tens of them assuming they mature physically at about 20 years and mother takes care of her offspring until they are fully grown. They could be very efficient at outbreeding other species.
it may also be related to the biological process known as parthenogenesis which typically is only possible in female sexed organisms. maybe sometime in their evolution they branched off into single sex reproduction (parthenogenesis) which then branched off into the neurobiological form of reproduction? EDIT: okay so here's a theory for why the asari are mono-gendered. they are thousands of years old in a single lifetime which means they are an ancient, ancient species. what if at some point in their earlier evolutionary history males went extinct? what if the ardat yakshi were the cause of it and earlier in asari history they began emerging in more numbers and when the asari engaged in (male and female) sexual reproduction, the males were killed off? and then what if the remaining female asari developed some kind of genetic engineering to prevent total extinction which took the form of parthenogenesis and out-breeding to increase genetic diversity and decrease risk of ardat yakshi being born?
I personally like that Asari have skin colors besides blue. Most of the other races besides humans don't seem to have a lot of physical differences, sure some Krogans might a different shade of green or brown, but the Asari could be said to have "races" of the one species just like humans. Asari can be blue, green, purple, and who knows what other colors.
They are the amazing to say the least. But I still wish we got to see more about them. The most Asarii culture we get acquainted with is in ME's 1 & 2. And how they get these long lived lifespans like Turians and Krogan by my guess is either from natural evolution, species-wide element zero exposure or maybe genetic manipulation from Programs I can't tell. They seem even more attractive to some fans due to how older and somewhat colder they become. I still want to know more and if ME:A goes into it more I wanna see it
I'm surprised that this possible aspect of their biology is always overlooked, as I'm sure most would agree that it's a very interesting idea. Asari could possess some sort of passive mind altering ability that would cause other races to perceive Asari facial structure as one similar to their own, which would make it easier for them to interact with other species who won't have to get used to reading the body language of an alien face upon meeting them. It could also be argued that this trait developed over time before they were a space faring race, as the ability could have served as a means of avoiding conflict with predatory animals on their home planet.
arcticequine I don't think it's that deep. it's like humans when there's a mixed person. everyone sees the same person and if they could draw that person, all drawings would look very similar. They got their shit figured out just with percepcion. Theory goes they can mate with virtualy any race is because they were that race once long ago. Or just reorganized they reproduction system into more suitable form. They enjoy life and they suffer from it. Admirable race. I would give my life to save one any time of the day.
When it comes to aliens in our fiction they have to meet one of the three F’s. If you can’t be fed by them, fight them, or fuck them they aren’t worth mentioning lol
I have been working on improving audio, in this one you should notice the audio is more fluent. I have also fixed the low volume problem and you will see that in my following videos. I hope you enjoy this one none the less. Please let me know what I can improve on and what you like so that I can improve. Thanks for all your support
The only part of the audio that I have trouble with now are the popping sounds on the 'P's. You can make a decent pop filter with just a coathanger and sock or stocking, my own content (to my own ears, and I'm sure to others) has risen in quality dramatically since I made myself one, and it makes editing for audio levels etc. much easier as well. It's cheap and easy, I highly recommend trying it out. Oh, and keep up the good work :)
+Tommi theKrogan The videos I make for Mass Effect Follower have been made over several days, compared to my own channel which can take like 20 minutes. I put a lot more care into MEF because it's Mass effect and the quality has to stay consistent between myself and Tucker's. The only reason it may seem louder is that I edit on my phone on my own channel and on my laptop for MEF; as I can do more with it e.g add in watermark ect. I have now got a microphone which will help and have found a way to buff up the audio. But I can ensure you that I speak the same in videos on either channel. It just seems to pick up as more energetic via my phone.
Well 3 of the 4 Council races have been confirmed along with the Krogan and as the Turs are a popular species, I believe its a safe bet that we'll see them.
Y'know, the female pronouns could be a result of the 'translators.' In the original asari language the pronoun could be gender-neutral but programmed to translate into female pronouns as their physiology resemble that of female humans so much. Just my non-Canon explanation.
I still feel the Asari are too underdeveloped for what they should be. A lot more Tell rather than Show when it comes to how important/powerful they are in the Mass Effect universe, unlike many of the other races. They could have so much more impact but in the end they fall pretty flat when compared to the depth that's given to other species. They're more than JUST the "sexy blue aliens" but, with few exceptions, not by a whole lot and they could've been so much more. :/
My point exactly - if every race perceives them differently then what the heck do they *actually* look like? They're obviously brainwashing every other race into making them beautiful and attractive. What else are they doing to the other races?!? Heck for all we know The Reapers are a product of the asari brainwashing too - maybe everything Shepard experienced throughout the Mass Effect trilogy is an asari illusion and he/she is actaully getting sucked dry by Liara the asari vampire. Maybe asari actually look like the demented offspring of H.R. Giger's worst nightmare and H.P. Lovecraft's worst nightmare. Maybe they spend all day sucking the DNA from their victims.....
I think krogan are equal about it. Wrex doesn't find Liara attractive (based vaguely on Citadel DLC banter) but Grunt does (also based on Citadel DLC banter). The one krogan on Illium spouting poetry finds asari attractive. And one krogran with his buddy on the Citadel talks about asari briefly, one hinting that asari are not attractive because you can't get a ''decent grip'' and the other one finding Sha'ira the consort desirable.*And I doubt the asari are anything other than what they show themselves to be, even if they are their religion all talks about how we are all energy of the universe so physical bodies doesn't mean all that much to them in the end, their minds does and so does ours.*
StephySon I get what you mean, socially other races interact with them as women in terms of gender identification, using "she/her" pronounce, but they are never referred to as "female" in regards to biological classification because then an Asari father would have to be classified as male, all Asari are simply classified as Asari regardless of their romantic relations.
I'd like to point out biological sex is based on reproductive cells(egg/sperm) and since it's always the asari are the one who has the child that suggests their respective cell is closer to an egg then a sperm so female
Great vid my only negative remark is the miss/ mixed use if the words gender and sex. Sex is the genetic /base physical form for reperduction. Gender is a socioeconomic construction or how a society develops roles based on social factors such as a sex to gender role, i.e. male/men should should be warriors or female/ women should be homemakers or in a different society female / men should be warriors and male/ women should be homemakers. Due to the fact that Asri are mono sex they most likely didn't have gender identity as a concept until they met a bi-sex or poly-sex species that had developed it.
if there's a galactic civil war imo humans would still win. knowing humans we'll have the krogans in our side. we'll use their hate towards salarians and use them to wipe out the turians. heck we might even get the batarians yes they hate humans but a promise of more titles and planets for them is too good to pass over.
Most confusion about asari gender seems to come from the fact that the people who wrote them didn't really understand the words they used. Since ME1 codex they were referred to "monogender ALL-FEMALE species". Technically "female" refers to sex, not gender, as it's more clinical, biological term, while gender is more culturally and societally influenced. "Female" is just an organism that produces non-mobile ova and doesn't produce sperm (since hermaphrodites do both), so all Asari are female, but they don't have cultural gender because for formation of such concept there's needed something that could be opposed to it in comparison. Also, as for their "non traditional" sexuality, ME3 f-ked a bit that idea because the writers basically established there that Asari watch p0rn. In ardat yakhsi or whatever they were called Academy you can find out that the girls were watching some Asari-Asari p0rn that was already referred to in ME2. If they watch p0rn, then naked Asari turn them on in very traditional, visual sense, and they probably masturbate. Which means all that "mind connection" is just to boost things up a bit but it's not the point of their sexuality.
0:36 - or, you know, gynoid-shaped, mono-gendered aliens possessing semi-flexible, cartilage-based scalp-crests. 3:08 - actually, some asari gravitate toward gender-neutral pronuns or male-pronuns as seen in ME:A. 8:40 - should really mentioned how the asari military is structured, a milita essentially. Codex entries provide more info' than you do. Strangely, I noted that that the audio volume & quality increased when I put the video of 1.5 playthrough speed. Not sure what that is all about. All in all, should have waited to have done this video as you didn't get some info' from ME:A and was the video lacking in certain aspects; that in-game codexes would be a better source of info'.
Exept that they don't, From snipits from the old games we know that the Asari don't have male pronouns in their language as they don't have males. The codex states they are all female.
The_Drop_Bear, An asari in ME:A in the Nexus Cultural Center explains to a curious Angara, who thought she was a female as she preferred those pronuns, that she garneded no offense and that some asari do prefer male pronuns. While I am uncertain how this translates to the asari language; clearly some do prefer male pronuns and the codex changes throughout the game; altering from ''female'' to a ''non-gender.''
@Dillon Brunschon No you haven't, all you have done is quote the wiki. And made a couple of comments that appear in my notifications but not in the thread and that i can't reply to.
Great video. As much as I like Aria, Samara, and Aethyta, I've always thought, design-wise, asari are the weakest race. Universally attractive, blue-skinned, almost humans that all possess 1,000 year life spans, space magic, and loose sexual morals. As a race, that's reaching Mary-Sue levels. I realize they're probably meant to be a tribute to Star Trek's space babes, but that doesn't make them very interesting compared to the other races. I will now accept all your downvotes.
Definitely maiden. When you meet her in ME1, she says that she's 106 years old. She's not the typical maiden though, as instead of stripping and/or joining a merc gang, she pursues an acedemic career, and later becomes the Shadow Broker :D
Maybe they dont have any! Humans see Asari looks like us... Turians see Asari look like them... Salarians see Asari look like them! I think they dont look like any of this... The question is... How do they look like? And im pretty sure everyone trying to uncover this mysteric topic have a problem with sudden death...
Fariko Wishless Just picture Liara... with a dick. Well, it's not an actually penis like a male human. There are no testicles or openings. It's an psychic energy linking appendage that adds in the transfer of genetic data imprints which helps in the randomization of key alleles. It just resembles a penis like the asari resemble human women. It's official canon.
Fariko Wishless It doesn't work with non-asari. They can use it on humans, but non-asari don't have the complimentary organs to utilize any gains from a cross-species joining. I sense you are concerned that your Shepard could not take full advantage of this asari appendage. Fear not. For rather you are a fem or male Shepard, Liara has no doubt been inside you. So put your worries to rest.
Asari are the most boring of the main races. They are just 0815 space elves with psicic powers instead of magic. Of course there are very interesting asari individuals in the game (mostly because the game features this race so much) but the race itself is way less appealing to me than the other 2 non-human council races. Wish they would support drell, hanar, volus or one of the less featured races in mass effect 4 instead of asari.
They're not tentacles! They're semi-flexible cartilage-based scalp crests that grow into place.
Ya I still dont get what that means
They are like ears
They are obviously the Elves of the mass effect world.

It just seems to pick up as more energetic via my phone.
enjoyed this a lot!
can u do quarians next
They have such a fascinating culture.
I have Quarians scheduled just after my next one; the Krogan
Mass Effect Lore Oh so exciting, I can't wait ^^
I swear to god, if I dont see one turian or krogan in andromeda (or at least something that resembles them)I will probably cry.
Krogan are confirmed, Turians are not yet.
Oh wait, spoiler alert!
Giraffen Benji
No they are female.
Even the codex states it
Space elves, got it.
It didn't say that Thessia was attacked by the Rachni.
great video. keep going
if you could sent one animal race to andremada what animal would it be
7:17 interesting mod
What if the asari identify themselves sexually as Ymir Mech; Triggered.
No a madcat. Lol
Did you just assume their gender?
Nizar El-Zarif so it begins
Nizar El-Zarif They identify as Attack Helicopters.
No mention of the conversation between the salarian, the turian and the human in the Ilium bar (mass effect 2)?????
MAybe Asari actualy look like Krogans and we just "cant see" it...
Ok that a bit extrem ;Y But possible... But personaly i think its no problem they make you think you look like them to hold peace !
I will never understand why people like Aria. I was surprised that I never got the option to just shoot her in Mass Effect 2.
They are Kett
Asari are just mono sex, they cannot really be categorized as female because that implies that there are male Asaris.
U know how us humans are, it just makes it easier to imply them as female.
StephySon
I get what you mean, socially other races interact with them as women in terms of gender identification, using "she/her" pronounce, but they are never referred to as "female" in regards to biological classification because then an Asari father would have to be classified as male, all Asari are simply classified as Asari regardless of their romantic relations.
Gian Indeed, I do understand what u mean as well.
pleasant discussion in youtube comments? I must be REALLY high right now
mastergwaha
haha
You forget to say that all races thing the Asari look like them...
That entire theory is based on the word of 3 drunk guys at a bachelor party.
Mono gender means one gender, they are all female. There are real life examples of mono sex life.
I'd like to point out biological sex is based on reproductive cells(egg/sperm) and since it's always the asari are the one who has the child that suggests their respective cell is closer to an egg then a sperm so female
Who do you want to see next?
the thorian. the vorcha. the geth/guariens civil war....also I'm wondering if you guys will ever get into the books?. keep up the good work guys.
The yahg
The Krogans or the Quarians!
Hiro Animation Oh there is quite a bit, remember Tali wouldn't shut up bout her people XD hehe
Hiro Animation Don't worry, I'm sure Quarians are next on the list
Great vid my only negative remark is the miss/ mixed use if the words gender and sex. Sex is the genetic /base physical form for reperduction. Gender is a socioeconomic construction or how a society develops roles based on social factors such as a sex to gender role, i.e. male/men should should be warriors or female/ women should be homemakers or in a different society female / men should be warriors and male/ women should be homemakers. Due to the fact that Asri are mono sex they most likely didn't have gender identity as a concept until they met a bi-sex or poly-sex species that had developed it.
Liara has the cutest cheeks in ME3
asa the asari
if there's a galactic civil war imo humans would still win. knowing humans we'll have the krogans in our side. we'll use their hate towards salarians and use them to wipe out the turians. heck we might even get the batarians yes they hate humans but a promise of more titles and planets for them is too good to pass over.
I will spend my lifetime with one of asari if they exist 😀because I love Liara and blue skins.
Are the Asari like meant to be like love interests to other characters? if so then it'll be great for an Asari to be more than pretty face.
A whole race of hot blue babes!
Did u just assume an Asari's gender?
*TRIGGERED*
Mike Messiah
No they asari and the codex confirm they are female
@Dillon Brunschon
They all identify as females
@Dillon Brunschon
Err no I'm not
@Dillon Brunschon
No you haven't, all you have done is quote the wiki. And made a couple of comments that appear in my notifications but not in the thread and that i can't reply to.
@Dillon Brunschon
It's really not, and the fact you are getting so defensive about it makes me think otherwise
Turian: Tentacle hair
Salarian: Blue skin
Human: Tits
Krogan: Ass(?)
I just realized I haven’t seen any male asaris in ME2.
There's no such thing...
What about the other races?
Is it just me or do the Audio VERY very low in this video?
Wait you can find out who Liara's "father " is? I can't believe I didn't know about that.
3rd act, I think, of ME3 when Aethyta is at the cafe on the Citadel
+McReese thanks I'll have to look out for her on my next play through.
So what stage of life is liara in ?
Definitely maiden. When you meet her in ME1, she says that she's 106 years old. She's not the typical maiden though, as instead of stripping and/or joining a merc gang, she pursues an acedemic career, and later becomes the Shadow Broker :D
Their goddess and gods were protheans. Most beautiful until botched by Andromeda abomination
I know liara is 106 in ME 1 but how old is she in 2 and 3 ??
108 and 109
they copy past the human body. THEY HAVE HUMAN NOSES AND FINGERS !! LOOL
I heard the theory of parasite, I believe it
That entire theory is based on the word of 3 drunk guys at a bachelor party.
Did you just assume my gender?
Why do Asari have breasts they don't breasts feed so what is the evolutionary benefit?
Because blewbs!
Maybe they dont have any! Humans see Asari looks like us... Turians see Asari look like them... Salarians see Asari look like them! I think they dont look like any of this... The question is... How do they look like? And im pretty sure everyone trying to uncover this mysteric topic have a problem with sudden death...
Utterly no mention of the asari being futanari. FAIL!!!!
Lmao.... Oddly enough I'm curious how that'd look. I mean obviously rule 34 and Google has answers buuuut I don't want to risk it getting too weird.
+Crescendyr They actually explained how they mate with other human genders?
Fariko Wishless It doesn't work with non-asari. They can use it on humans, but non-asari don't have the complimentary organs to utilize any gains from a cross-species joining.
I sense you are concerned that your Shepard could not take full advantage of this asari appendage. Fear not. For rather you are a fem or male Shepard, Liara has no doubt been inside you. So put your worries to rest.
Crescendyr bullshit.
They’re pretty toxic
