  • As the results on the last vote are so close (or were at the time of making this vid), we're gonna do both episodes sticking to out fortnightly schedule, with the Asari this week and the Krogan the next!
    The Asari are the oldest race in the Mass Effect universe with lifespans around 1000 years, the most beautiful art and cultural heritage, they are far more than the "alien babe" trope that they may first appear to be.
    ...Technically they're not even women. They are blue though.
    This is the Cultural Index a series aimed at exploring various Science-Fiction species.
    For outsiders to a series to get to know the basics and maybe even hardened Sci-fi nuts might discover something new.
    Thanks for watching!
    Music in this video from Mass Effect 3.
    Mass Effect, Mass Effect 2 and Mass Effect 3 are produced by BioWare and published by EA, Microsoft Game Studios.
    This Video is for educational purposes with commentary.

    Two important points, the Asari are stated to have been altered by the Protheans, they MIGHT have father enhance themselves genetically later on, oh and the Protheans left them their technology, the Asari didn't really develop their own Technology, again, an intentional remanent of the Protheans. Humans were to be the OTHER hears the Prothean throne, but had less time to develop us.

  • @furioni333
    @furioni333 6 ปีที่แล้ว +64

    You forgot to mention one important element of the Asari race. Perhaps I missed it, I'm sorry if that's the case. There was this conversation among characters of different races in one of the scenes, that implies heavily that the Asari look exactly how a member of their species would look. Therefore, there's a deep mental manipulation here, that is so advanced, multiple creatures see them, and each see a member of their own species. So, a human, sees a humanoid asari, the only difference is blue skin . etc, while a krogan sees a female krogan.

    • @kaibaCorpHQ
      @kaibaCorpHQ 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Bahaha, I remember that in game. Wasn't it by one of those stores where a bunch of asari were stripping on the table in 2....3? I'm pretty sure it was a turian and a salarian having a conversation.

      And in canon they simply have something every race finds attractive
      Humans like the shape
      Salarians like their skin color
      Turians like their head fringe
      Etc. Etc.
      The amount of people who jumped on this bandwagon when there is a factual explanation built into the lore is simply amazing. And indicative of the human attribute to jump to conclusions.

    • @aecides3203
      @aecides3203 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I don't think each see a member of their own species - it's a Turian, a Human and a Salarian in a bar on Ilium and all of them seem to see the Asari in the same way but think they look more like their own species than the other two. For Humans and Turians this makes total sense - humans would identify with the basic humanoid shape while Turians would identify with the shape and the frills on their head. I found it most interesting that a Salarian still felt that they looked more Salarians, since Asari look less like them than Turian or Human in the game. As someone else said, it could simply be that each species focus their perception of the Asari on the parts that they find most attractive and familiar, but I do think there's something more going on to some extent.
      I know Andromeda isn't popular but another point of interest with this - you can overhear an Angaran who is clearly not sold on the presence of the other initiative species but mentions that they wouldn't mind seeing more Asari around, meaning that they're even appealing to a species from another Galaxy (an artificially created one, at that) who have been left inherently and justifiably distrustful of aliens due to past experiences.
      Also, a LOT of women are referenced as being attracted to Asari, to such an extent that it seems unlikely they're all into women so, while it's never explicitly stated, I'd guess that a heterosexual human woman would still be attracted to an Asari even though they appear (by necessity for birthing and feeding their offspring) to be female.
      Since they have the ability to initiate a telepathic link through physical contact and their 'sex appeal' seems to affect a species from another Galaxy despite the fact that Andromeda and Milky Way life are shown to have several notable (though mild) biological differences (such as milky way colonists needing to take an enzyme supplement to eat andromeda food), I'd hazard a guess that the effect is achieved through a kind of unconscious telepathic field rather than pheromones/similar (also, the STC is shown to extensively study other species and probably would have noticed by now if the Asari were constantly emitting mind altering pheromones, which can easily be detected and studied).

    • @fenrisvermundr2516
      @fenrisvermundr2516 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That theory wouldn't work though. They'd resemble what the person finds attractive.
      So to a gay man it wouldn't make sense for them to look like women as gay men are attracted to men. Canonically Shepard is Bisexual meaning a few Asari would resemble males. The same applies with Ryder, though you have more freedom to pick his sexuality because you can make Scott exclusively gay.

    1 thing that always kinda rubbed me wrong with the Mass Effect series is the animations and certain sounds related to animations, they just don't feel natural and dont feel like they match, one huge contribution to this is how they did the animations, the game frankensteins the animations by stitching together animations from a library of pre rendered animations made by hand making them very stiff and unnatural.
    the reason Andromeda had such shitty face expressions early on for example (they fixed it later) is because there was a bug where the game would not properly access the animations library.
    would have not been a problem if they used mo-cap or hand animated the cut scenes, but there was to many to realistically do so, especially with the honestly laughable budget and time frame the development teams was given, and it dont help that the experienced A-team was busy developing the absolute shit game Anthem leaving the B-team who had only experience as a support team for certain aspects on previous games and zero experience using the Frostbite 3 engine, and them, the support team, having to create everything from scratch did nothing to help the situation.
    they had to create ALL assets, tools, systems, etc from scratch since previous games was made using the Unreal Engine leaving literally EVERYTHING other then physical artworks useless.
    truly a laughable mistake from day one.
