    I am another "short timer" Singapore resident - only 3 years and I still miss Singapore - even though it's very different to my home of Scotland. I loved hawker food and once I got over the British "fear" of buying street food from stalls and realised the quality and taste for the money - I was hooked. maxwell was my local hawker place and I had food from there at least a couple of times per week. Loved the video and it's great to see more hawker places being recognised by the Michelin guide. Some of my best food in Singapore was like S$5 or less!

It's all about the presentation and finding new innovative (and hopefully tasty) ways of showing them off. Sure, you have places with the $800 a pound caviar or the insanely expensive this or that, but most dishes still just use vegetables that we all use, and we all use beef and pork and chicken, right? Even if they get the best of the best in that regard :D

    • @LordLOC
      @LordLOC ปีที่แล้ว +6

      When you go to a high-end restaurant, it's more about the experience than anything else (and of course the food will be delicious and unique normally in these sorts of places) rather than showing off one's social status. At least normally. If you go to a $1500 a plate 5 star restaurant in some super expensive place, yeah that's the status symbol usually. But places like this, much more for the experience. As someone who went to the CIA and was training to become a chef, and worked in restaurants on the line for a while, most of these chefs are smart, dedicated people who love food. And want others to see their "vision" as it were. That being said, I know nothing of this chef - but the food and dishes all look really unique and I'd guess it's an experience thing for that place.

      Cash is widely accepted. You are given a tray to carry all your food and utensils. You need to return the tray to a nearby spot after dining so that the table you vacate can be uses straightaway by the next patron.

      @@wingsofmelancholy thank you. i also read that you can use a seat save method with a napkin or anything random like an umbrella which is awesome.

      @@JohnnyNacis the classic is a pack of tissue paper. It is actually not the most civic-minded thing to do, but it is so common that it is now part of the culture. As far as tray return is concerned, do note that there are separate shelves for halal (muslim) and non-halal food. Singapore is racially diverse and patrons dont mix utensils across halal and non-halal food options. there is colour coding and large signs, so you really cant go wrong.

    I dunno, but that soy sauce chicken is way too raw for me in the middle. Everything else? Especially the congee? Want.

      Probably, he’s said before that if it’s a small business he usually won’t include it in the video.

      huh? your complaint would at least be somewhat valid if it were true. the last 22 videos have been well over 10 min long. even going over to his other channel, a few have been shorter but the vast majority still in the 15-25 minute range.

    Damn, that last exotic meal is the $276 meal? So my question is for 276 dollars, was for per person or is that price for two people?? Each dish looked exquisite and all, but its literally one bit per dish lol. Knowing Mikey, he probably went and bought a happy meal at Mickey D's after he left the fancy dining restaurant
