the first artists in a while who care more about the raw beauty of music that comes from personal experiences more than they care about outer image. wonderful:)
This was my first introduction to Bon Iver, sent by an acquaintance in 2008. I would dive into everything Justin Vernon ever touched, and barely listened to anything else for several years after that. Today this music reminds me of being young, scared, hopeful, uncertain, and yet content. I occasionally return to it on a lonely Saturday evening, to remind me of how I once felt. As if it was another person, in a different timeline. I wish I could hug that young man, and tell him: It will be okay.
I remember when I first heard this song when the album came out in 2007. I was in my first year of university, getting my heart broken for the first time. All of my emotions were so amplified back then, and I would listen to this song constantly… along with “Where Does the Good Go” by Tegan and Sara, “A Better Son/Daughter” by Rilo Kiley, “Anthems for a 17 Year Old Girl” by Broken Social Scene… It’s been fifteen years since then, and listening to those songs again always takes me back to those days, riding the train to class or driving with the windows down in the summertime.
@saintlysinner666 I saw em perform this live at glastonbury in 2009. It was awsome. I was backstage when I heard them, and just had to go round the front for the rest of the set. It had me mesmorised, and you know how hearing a song will take you back to a location, time and feeling? this one does it for me, hot summer evening, relaxing with beer, the rest of the band and friends. Puts a smile on my face every time I hear it.
Its got to be said, the rest of the band amplify his voice. This is the best i've seen/heard Bon Iver perform live..and it's simply amazing! The band vocals provide the impact that is needed in the live performance!
Super talented guy. All in the moods and vibe, extremely musical. Some people are missing unfortunately because of the completely different instrumental approach he keeps choosing. He is the real deal.
why are the top comments always people putting down other artists. you don't have to put other artists down to appreciate this music. this beautiful music.
@SuperNerdWebb I'm a huge Skrillex fan and I didn't come here to hate. I love music of all types and I love Bon Iver. Computer generated or not both are talented in their own right. Granted Bon Iver is incredibly talented but it all appeals to different people. Music just needs to be that expression.
@andrewmaddennn i agree with you, but to clarify, Skrillex is really an artist. Not comparing him to Bon Iver, but he's good at what he does; just because it's not being produced by a live instrument doesn't mean it's easy to create. it's a lot of programming more than actually playing an instrument, but producing that sound is a lot harder than it seems
@qpong Yeah wow I didn't realize it was that old either. Self-released in 2007 with a wider release in February '08. I added "For Emma" to my iTunes May 2009 and the rest of the album Sept. 2010. This album took a while to get big.
@MrMusicFan2011 who cares about a cover - that is what youtube has become - a place for people to post videos covering music instead of writing and recording their own - no wonder the music industry is shit and rare gems like THIS are becoming harder and harder to find...pure talent here...not overproduced like 99% of the crap that comes out nowadays
@CloudNineGamer I'd just like to believe that there's a difference between "art" and "beats." Vernon puts his heart and soul into the music. I just don't feel like someone who's making party music is a better artist than a man who is pouring his heart into what he's doing.
from what the top commenter said as how artists really use their imaginative mind and the real feel of music, the other week i was in oakland on first friday at stork club and heard the band "Puff Puff Beer" yea they dont sound nothing like bon iver but an incredible genius band using all kinds of instruments and sound! check them out!
@Rockstarwilliam You'd probably hear the difference if he'd play it again with just one drummer...I love the effect it has on the song, particularly at about 1:15
There is ALWAYS debate on youtube videos, It's true that some prefer it one way, whilst others prefer it other ways. I wont be so generic as to say which one I think is better, but I do prefer the Jools Holland one. This one has a great appeal to it though, something new Bon Iver fans will adhere to. Something perfect for Letterman show, They are both outstanding though, talented guy & a great, great song.
to go on other musician's pages to hate, only to get responses, respond to those responses and waste my time even more would make me look like a bum just like the rest of people that somehow have time to do that. Im just addressing those who come to this page to do that. so to gaga/minaj/skrilex fans. Bon iver is of a different class altogether. He is able to sit in a chair, dress and act normal, and still have a huge fan base. This is because his music keeps your attention not anything else
I though there couldn't be anything more magical than the album version, but now I think I prefer the live version even more. @annab77annab: I agree, this song is absolutely heart-melting.
I agree with everything you said except for the Cole part. Yes he has kinda sold out lately, but if you still question him, look up The Lost Ones. Brilliant song. Shows that Cole is a true poet, but he rarely shows it
@dstern416 I wasn't so much trying to say that Justin Vernon won by default. I was more trying to get at the fact that he is a true artist. He definitely deserved it way more. He seems to be the only one who is doing something I've never heard before.
@visitatin you know, this guy told his record label that he didn't want to use sound engineers on his new album because he could do it himself. Go listen to Holocene and hear the 15 different instruments playing at the same time. Vernon played most of them in the recording. He's an artist. Who do you feel should have won it? The Band Perry (aka Lady Antebellum circa 2011), or maybe J. Cole (aka just another rapper on the radio), or Nicki Minaj (aka Black Lady Gaga), or Skrillex (aka MacBook Pro)
@andrewmaddennn dude I have to disagree, Bon Iver is obviously an outstanding artist but Skirllex made dubstep mainstream which is an outstanding feat. I think we should all respect their accomplishments (that includes Nicki Minaj and J cole or whatever) even if we don't like their music. Anyways Bon Iver you rock keep making music like this.
How? In what way is it ignorant? I'm no dubstep fan, but apparently, in the dubstep community, Skrillex is one of the most hated musicians in the genre because Sonny Moore doesn't use the switchboard the same way as most of them do. He makes a playlist on iTunes and occasionally hits a few effects during the song. There are plenty of videos of him doing that.
phuuyay: Not sure about the make. It might be a National Style O, or maybe a Hudson....there are quite a few makers of resonators. I can't figure it out; sorry.
@jaybyrd570 Well, It just goes to show that even a rapper can respect folk/easy listening/indie music enough to have him sing some background vocals/collaborate him with his album. I'm not a big fan of Hip Hop, but I do think it is awesome that kanye Picked Justin to be on his album. And Kanye is not all about rap. Some of his most favorite bands come from Rock'n Roll!
@andrewmaddennn Music is music, no matter the medium. Skrillex is talented. Just no one understands what he does. Sure he uses programs but they even have a process and isn't just copy paste here and they to sound incredible. Every genre has it's incredibly talented artists that we can tell by one listen or some that need more than one listen. Granted Vernon is talented just don't rule out other genre's/styles because of the way the music is made. Music is still music. Whether we enjoy it or not
@MsJehosaphat it is the same beat but they cant be perfect and the delay of each hit make it a little more interesting. what is necessity in art anyway?
@23RMD Yeah, I just gave him a lesson before posting in this video. He's awesome, but I like Bondy more. Maybe it's just me, but his voice is so similar to Bob Dylan's. I'm more of soft voices anyway because even though I love Dylan as a song writer, I never liked his voice. Again this is all personal taste. Cheers buddy, hope you enjoy A.A. Bondy because he's an amazing musician.
the first artists in a while who care more about the raw beauty of music that comes from personal experiences more than they care about outer image. wonderful:)
this is the greatest performance i have ever seen, the passion in this is insane..
This is where I fell in love with Bon Iver. I remember it fondly.
I wish I could hug that young man, and tell him:
It will be okay.
this performance is actually flawless
when you listen to bon iver it's so awesome because you just know it's something that you'v never heard before from any other artist.
still love this song, despite it being on repeat for over a year now.. i get chills everytime i hear it
amazing
Just a beautiful and powerful song.
So much soul and raw energy from this.
he's wearing a badgers shirt!
i'm so proud to be a Wisconsinite because of this man.
Justin is so amazing, He's also rockin' the Bucky Badger shirt! Love it!
I'm friggin' addicted to this song!
best performance of this song yet
@saintlysinner666 I saw em perform this live at glastonbury in 2009. It was awsome. I was backstage when I heard them, and just had to go round the front for the rest of the set. Stunning

Bon Iver is so flippin amazing
Super talented guy. All in the moods and vibe, extremely musical. Some people are missing unfortunately because of the completely different instrumental approach he keeps choosing. He is the real deal.
Fantastic!
BEAUTIFUL
this song is so great
I think this guy is Canadian and just doesn't realize it. So different. Thanks for uploading this clip.
This guy is awesome
Perfect.
why are the top comments always people putting down other artists.
you don't have to put other artists down to appreciate this music. this beautiful music.
I prefer the RAWness of old, rather than the cleanliness of this performance.
Sooooo sick...I love it
2:05- 2:09 was amazing.
you got it!
@stanerz79 what I like most is the variety...the changes between this and Jools are beautiful...
@anderstornvig roroy gallagher loved to play that guitar, great sound off it. i love the drum thing they do here, original
You know it will be good when it is in 240p.
@andrewmaddennn i agree with you, but to clarify, Skrillex is really an artist. @ThousandShakes Serious? This is good music, Bon Iver makes music with passion!
@CloudNineGamer I'd just like to believe that there's a difference between "art" and "beats." Vernon puts his heart and soul into the music. I just don't feel like someone who's making party music is a better artist than a man who is pouring his heart into what he's doing.

It's a National NRP 14 Fret (National-Reso-Phonic).
Justin Vernon's guitar is gorgeous.
@Rockstarwilliam You'd probably hear the difference if he'd play it again with just one drummer...I love the effect it has on the song, particularly at about 1:15
Look up the jools holland version it almost brought me to tears its so powerful
H O L Y sH!t..... LOVIN THIS, DRUMS Fantastic
There is ALWAYS debate on youtube videos, It's true that some prefer it one way, whilst others prefer it other ways. They are both outstanding though, talented guy & a great, great song.
I like this version better than the album's. It's more soulful because of the slower tempo and no chorus effect.
AWESSOME :D
to go on other musician's pages to hate, only to get responses, respond to those responses and waste my time even more would make me look like a bum just like the rest of people that somehow have time to do that. "Just hit the snare?"
"Just hit the snare bud"
If you think this is good then check out the live on Jools Holland version...it's amazing...totally amazing...
2:04
so good...
Justin Vernon has a great collection of beanies
I though there couldn't be anything more magical than the album version, but now I think I prefer the live version even more.
@annab77annab: I agree, this song is absolutely heart-melting.
I think the performance he did on his own on Jools Holland was better if you haven't seen it check it out its perfection.
this made me smile hard
@Norm1011616 I doubt it was Letterman himself...but his amazing writers.
I agree with everything you said except for the Cole part. Yes he has kinda sold out lately, but if you still question him, look up The Lost Ones. Brilliant song. Shows that Cole is a true poet, but he rarely shows it
lol thats funny!
in a way it does...
but in every other way,
its Beautiful.
Me too
Nothing will top the Jools Holland Prefomance!
@dstern416 I wasn't so much trying to say that Justin Vernon won by default. I was more trying to get at the fact that he is a true artist. He definitely deserved it way more. He seems to be the only one who is doing something I've never heard before.
thumbs up if you knew this song before the grammys.
He's playing a Dobro. It's a guitar with a resonator on it.
@visitatin you know, this guy told his record label that he didn't want to use sound engineers on his new album because he could do it himself. Go listen to Holocene and hear the 15 different instruments playing at the same time. Vernon played most of them in the recording. He's an artist. Who do you feel should have won it? @brandonehhhh thumbs up if you cried to this... before the 2012 grammys
@JacobAnsteyVEVO Same thing with me and Switchfoot. If you like Bon Iver, Jon Foreman's solo stuff is very similar.
hahaha, i love it.
I fucking like this song!!
@masteroli47 yeah what do I know, I've only been performing as a singer/songwriter for 25+ years
How? In what way is it ignorant? I'm no dubstep fan, but apparently, in the dubstep community, Skrillex is one of the most hated musicians in the genre because Sonny Moore doesn't use the switchboard the same way as most of them do. The guitar is a National-style resonator.
Another great beard: Chris Robinson of the Black Crowes.
a band of talented lumberjacks. Grizzled, yet powerful :D
I can just see Sean Carey & I'm like ur Brillo Sean
Isn't that a national reso guitar? but which model is it? oO
phuuyay: Not sure about the make. It might be a National Style O, or maybe a Hudson....there are quite a few makers of resonators. I can't figure it out; sorry.

what kind of guitar is that?
fuck that! thumbs up if you knew this song before 2008
@lfcheart
amen bro
Hey. Im looking for more artists like Bon Iver and Tallest Man on Earth. Any suggestions? It'd be much appreciated.
p.s This guy is insane!
Wisco love. reppin' that Flannel over Bucky on Letterman
@lfcheart you a liverpool fan ?
Col'es crazy good and real, listen to Lost Ones and you'll figure that out for yourself
fucking powerful!
i dont think you can recreate the intensity of that performance. so even though this one may be more refined, the jools one is just one of a kind.
Haters Gonna Hate. Midwest swag best swag.
11 people have never been crushed by the evil forces that a certain woman can have...... Maybe one day.
@MsJehosaphat Shhhhhhh!
@andrewmaddennn Music is music, no matter the medium. Skrillex is talented. Just no one understands what he does. @moneyquickeasy I think you meant comprehend?
@MsJehosaphat it is the same beat but they cant be perfect and the delay of each hit make it a little more interesting. what is necessity in art anyway?
He should jam with KOL. I'd like to see that.
@23RMD Avett Brothers, maybe even Mumford and Sons
@23RMD Yeah, I just gave him a lesson before posting in this video. He's awesome, but I like Bondy more. Maybe it's just me, but his voice is so similar to Bob Dylan's.
