Never know what his intentions behind the lyrics but this one always strikes me especially. I grew up extremely arrogant and ambitious, recently went through clinical depression essentially because I finally realised I was not magnificent and couldn't cope with being mediocre. Now I've embraced it my life is so much better but this song always reminds me.
You should read Camus. He believes, even thought we are not magnificent, that we should still live our best lives. No matter what. It is a conjunction of thought. This is Holocene.
I’m a 44 year old man that Cant get though this video without remembering the loss of my wife (4 days away from 5 years.) I cry every time. This is music that not only rips at the soul but rejuvenates it at the same time.
I’m so glad you were there. I work at the show (then Late Night, now The Tonight Show). I was in the back of the audience. They let staff members go in and watch from the back if there’s an act we like. I was blown away. Easily one of the best musical performances we’ve ever had in that studio in all my years of working there.
I lost my mother one month ago, she got cancer. She and I listened to this song together. I always loved this song (a lot), but now it has more sense than before to me. Thank you for the song.
I inexplicably cried. Nay, sobbed, the first time I heard this song. I didn't even know what the lyrics meant; only that it was forcing me to let go of pain I didn't even know I had.
The first time I heard this you would of thought I just lost my best friend, I sobbed so hard even after the song ended. It took a full month of occasionally listening to it before I could not lose my shit. Still to this day I get goosebumps every time it plays though.
Best version of Holocene I have ever seen live. Those little musical flouroshes throughout are as beautiful as music gets. Reminds me of a modern version of Van Morrison's Astral Weeks
Holy shit. I'm literally sitting here watching the always Sunny podcast on my TV while I watch this on a phone, because I just remembered about this song from one of my favorite guitarists of my favorite bands covering it. Always Sunny is my favorite show. I literally didn't notice he was the guest until you said this.
I rarely come across a song that grabs and holds my attention from the start all the way to the final chord. Wow. Beautiful! I absolutely loved it. Thank you for uploading this.. :)
I know right.. it's like you get sucked in the melody, It sounds very shallow in the begin of the song, but the bassnotes give it a deeper layer... where it sounds like the true meaning and feeling of the song just strike you..

This is probably one of the most enticing performances I've seen on here. The camera work really allows us to appreciate the nuances (the instruments, the instrumentalists, Justin's expressions). I mean, much like the way a poet chooses his/her words carefully in order to compose a powerful poem, this performance does the same. Much love!
its pretty hard for bands to be legendary and actually change music nowadays the way they have in the past, but bon iver/justin and songs like these are some of the most unique stuff I have seen and listened to in my life.. he's awesome :)
I'm waiting to see these in Manchester UK, next year I booked the tickets over a year ago but covid happened. I can't wait to see them. I only discovered them in the last few years and they have inspired me, given me clarity, made me feel emotion in different ways.
Either that or he's trying to stay in tune for what's to come, cause in my opinion he's about to cry. Or at least struggling to contain those emotions boiling inside at the catharsis moment...
When I die, I'm to be cremated and my ashes are to be mixed with those of my late boy, Toby, and scattered on the West coast of Ireland at sunset. This is to be played while the wind takes us away ...
my ashes to be spread at Point Betsie Lighthouse on the beach in Lake Michigan , with my dogs....I will walk the beach forever in beauty and love with the best companions a man could ever have
When I was 2 all i wanted for Christmas was an apple tree and my grandpa went out of his way to plant one for me. Sadly neither him nor the tree are still with us, but when I die I want an apple tree to be planted and I want my ashes spread underneath it so i could share the gift of fruit with all those who come after me
This is a 10/10 performance. Encapsulating to watch each musician find the groove and rhythm and you can tell by the lead singer. He knows they are in full flow.
Justin Vernon dresses in a style that can only be called "nerd cool". It's so unself image conscious that it ends up being kind of hip. And his music...good lord, how can you not love the beauty and sensitivity? Not possible...dude is real.
Its called being a hipster lol except hipsters actually try to go for the look while Justin probably doesn't put much thought into it like you said. Justin Vernon is a magnificent man.
this is simply a modern day masterpiece. 2 drummers, 3 guitars, 3 on horn instruments and a keyboardist. All perfectly combined to humble anybody down onto their knees. "and at once i knew... i was not magnificient.." this line says it all...
I don't even know how i want to formulate this, but everything seems completely and utterly useless but also so meaningfull at the same time. I can't really describe what I'm feeling, but that is the closest I've come in a long time to it. Thanks for the video, 10 years after it being uploaded :)
Bob Iver has been captivated me since “skinny love” in 08’. It’s magical and oh so heartbreaking! It’s romantic music taken to another level! We love ❤️ You Justin & the Boys fromBon Iver! HALLOCENE is one of the best!
Thank you so much for re-posting this. On the previous upload (which disappeared) a man commented that Bon Iver's music had helped him overcome his drug addiction. Amazingly he later ran into Justin (the singer-songwriter) at a truck-stop and Justin sat and talked with him for ten minutes as this man wept. I just thought that was an incredible story worth sharing again. Peace.
This song is syrup for the soul. It sticks with you and makes you feel tender and vulnerable . I cried the first time I heard it at the end of the movie The Judge .
a genuinely talented band. Two sets of drums working in tandem, the use of brass and bell instruments, and that underlying saxophone holding that one note in the chorus absolutely makes this song
I've only recently begun to really appreciate this incredible creation. I've read people's impressions of what the song is about -face it, it's beautiful because it's cryptic and we all take away something because we all feel the beauty and the pain in this song. And the musicians in this performance... damn! French horn, trombone, clarinet, tenor sax, trumpet... I, too, have this song on 'repeat' in my car, on my iPod, in my house. Thanks for the post! Incredibly moving.
3:45 This moment, it's simply GENIUS, musical story telling at its finest, You get transported to a magical, beautiful garden, but it's snowing very very heaviliy, so its almost like you cant stay there or you'll freeze to death, and even though it's dangerous you want to stay there as long as possible
Amazing performance. Also, I love that Charlie Days comes to the stage at the end to individually thank all the members of the band, class act that guy.
I feel like this song is about a battle with drug addiction or depression but reading the lyrics and listening to it at the same time makes it so much more profound…… simply beautiful in every way
Bon Iver is one of the best songwriters of this era. He manages to express the demons he faced with powerful lyrics as well as instrumentation. Simply breathtaking.
Let's be honest! One 'Like' is never enough to show the appreciation we meant for this Genius, and one 'comment' is NEVER going to do justice to this masterpiece! But I just want to pay my RESPECT and say Thank you:)
I've probably listnened to this song 100 times, played it at gigs at least ten times and I've recorded 5+ own versions of it with different instrumentations and mindsets. But I end up never being satisfied with my takes on it because Justin and Bon Iver's two takes (live and album are quite different) are just so incredibly good. Been working on getting a live one-take style recording of it with my band with just singing, guitar obstinato and a grand piano but I think I'm just going to put that recording on a hard drive and never publish it because I'll just compare it to the originals. Dammit, I love this song!

I remember when I found Bon Iver's music. It was like finding a part of myself that I always knew I had but I never thought I'd find.
For me it was during the final credits of The Place Beyond the Pines.
🖐
I found Bon Iver on Myspace in 2006.
feel this comment oh so much. thank you

"And at once I knew, I was not magnificent". That must be one of the most beautiful lines ever written.
It's actually "and once I knew" which changes the context a little but yes still amazing
Braxton Mouton It's "and at once I knew", I have the record on Vinyl and the lyrics are printed on it
Isaac Ruthen Really? my mistake. I hoped it was that, A-Z lyrics was wrong.

I lost my Mum this year and it was hard to take, Bon Iver really helped me.
I hope you're doing better!
It's tough :(
One of the best live performances I’ve ever seen. Just to keep this alive
For sure
I love coming back to this. Glad to see other people do to
'somewhere baby there's part of me apart from me', so apt when my marriage failed. Utterly brilliant...
Holocene for years has been the song I wake up to every day as my alarm. It is an utterly magical song. I am forever thankful that it exists.
i dont care who the hell you are, this song will touch anyone's soul.

Sarah Marie that was a perfect description.
Yes! Every time he sings. They have great song choices, taste and my God his voice!
Justins face at 4:56 is just pure magic, he's so into the music! What a fantastic live performance, this is top drawer stuff.
This song takes me places. I wish I would've discovered it in 2012 when it came out, but it's doing me great service right now.
where does it take you when you listen to it now?
I've listened to it on loop for days. Gonna do that more.

Lol what
this is an awesome comment, man. van and justin are my two all time favourites
Charlie Day sitting in the guest chair makes this video so much better. My favourite Bon Iver song.

I will never get enough of this band (nor Justin Vernon). So much talent, it's hard to fathom.

I thought I would only cry watching the music video, but even this performance did. Damn I'm getting too sentimental.
Its moving music mate
Man! Thanks for posting! Excellent memory.
This is spectacular! Great to see a group of musicians so in-synch to recreate such a dense album track!
Been years, coming back to this, still the best music made
Just heartbreakingly beautiful. Wow.
The way justin is moving his head back and forth, up and down is JUST BEAUTIFUL.
Just absolutely beautiful music.
one of the sweetest live performances i have ever heard

Once in a rare while a sound materializes before you, and you can’t believe it took so long to find it.
Gotta love how Questlove and Justin are pointing at each other when Jimmy mentions the greatest band in late night @5:49. Humble and genius people.
thankyou SO MUCH for reposting this. There is just something magical about this performance. I was absolutely gutted when I couldn't find it anymore. A blessing to find this again... kudos my friend
This is an incredibly emotional song. Man, I cry everytime.
Love these guys. Lots of heart / soul in their music.
''you do not live and breathe without the world, but the world lives and breathes without you''
What an amazing live performance! I was scheduled to see Bon Iver in concert in Maine last year but of course it was canceled due to Covid.
This song will grab onto you and not let go. I love it. xoxo
This was the first time I heard of Bon Iver, as well as the first time I literally heard him sing. Love at first sound. Love at first sight. He WAS magnificent. ~V~
"Someway, baby, it's part of me, apart from me."
You're laying waste to Halloween
You fucked it friend,
It's on it's head,
It struck the street
You're in Milwaukee, off your feet
... and at once I knew I was not magnificent
Strayed above the highway aisle
(Jagged vacance, thick with ice)
I could see for miles, miles, miles
3rd and Lake it burnt away, the hallway
Was where we learned to celebrate
Automatic bought the years you'd talk for me
That night you played me 'Lip Parade'
Not the needle, nor the thread, the lost decree
Saying nothing, that's enough for me
... and at once I knew I was not magnificent
Hulled far from the highway aisle
(Jagged, vacance, thick with ice)
I could see for miles, miles, miles
Christmas night,
It clutched the light,
The hallow bright
Above my brother,
I and tangled spines
We smoked the screen to make
It what it was to be
Now to know it in my memory:
... and at once I knew I was not magnificent
High above the highway aisle
(Jagged vacance, thick with ice)
I could see for miles, miles, miles
