I played Pikmin 1 for the first time with these remasters and it quickly entered my Top 20 Favorite Games. I'm not even a fan of RTS games and generally don't like Time Limits, but I just thought this game was really neat and cohesive.
I absolutely love the vibe & atmosphere of this game. more than any other pikmin game, it REALLY feels like you're stranded on this strange alien planet (that is secretly earth). I think part of it is the lack of dialogue, the strict time limit, and the music. it's kind of funny how the bones of this game are very similar to super metroid as well, which is also my favorite of its respective series.
The time limit is a key factor in Pikmin games. The fruit thing going on in Pikmin 3 I thought was a fine way to recreate the feel with a little more flexibility. I’m just now playing 2 for the first time and the lack of any feature to keep you under the gun and make you try to be efficient is off putting. I do worry about Pikmin 4 because it looks to be heading in the same direction. I only hope there is a challenge mode that is as enjoyable as Pikmin 3’s because that is the real meat of the game as far as I’m concerned.
I think the first game straddles the line between aging well enough in gameplay and visuals that it's servicable, but it could have used a Prime 1 treatment. The second game maybe a little less so. I recall when Pikmin 3 first came out on the Wii U and, after beating it, replaying the first on Wii. 3 is such an upgrade controlwise that it makes the first game feel like a tech demo.
I did the same excat thing as Joey. I only played Pikmin 3 Deluxe, and I bought the wii version of 1 and 2 on Wii U, and was planing to play 1,2 and maybe 3 before 4 release. So when I saw that 1 and 2 got shadow dropped to switch I bought them right away. I really enjoyed playing 1 for the first time. What a good game! I’m enjoying 2 so far 😄
As an OG Pikmin player, I’d call it a Real-Time Action Strategy Game. It’s not a true RTS experience because you’re actively involved as Olimar, so you’re always making decisions on the fly.
You’re splitting hairs. Yes the game is a little different than a traditional RTS but I don’t think the inclusion of the word “action” conveys a meaningful clarification to players who don’t already know what Pikmin gameplay is like. Further, I can’t think of any games other than Pikmin that world fit in the RTAS category although maybe there indie games in this category of which I’ve never heard. At any rate I think in explaining the game to a new player it’s best to just say it’s like an RTS with a twist.
@@DeathScyther006 probably depends on the individual to a degree as when I hear RTS my mind goes to base building type games like start craft or command and conquer. I love The Pikmin franchise but it dose not personally fit the RTS bill for me. Honestly feels like it’s own thing as I can’t think of to many games like it.

Even if RTAS is technically more accurate then it’s still not useful terminology if, as you concede, only a single IP fits into the group. This is the same reason why gamers spent 20 years arguing about whether Smash is a fighting game. Only after sufficient copycats such as Brawlhala, Rivals of Aether, and Nickelodeon All Stars released could a category such as Platform Fighter be cemented.
i actually prefer the new motion controls, just because when you use the gyro on a joycon for a pointer you have to recalibrate constantly, but now you dont since it recalibrates every time you press the button. if it was a wiimote the old version would be better, but it cant use a wiimote.
Just 100% it. The pikmin tripping constantly and falling under/off the side of bridges can be kind of annoying though. I think it’s my least favorite of the 3 mainline games, but they’re all great in their own ways. I will miss the lonely atmosphere and the funky music. I don’t think the others match 1 in that regard!

I am sure that long standing Pikmin fans have their reasons for being disappointed, maybe akin to how Metroid fans were disappointed in Prime Federation Force? But as a newcomer to the series with no expectations, Hey! Pikmin is an honest to god fun 2D platformer in a format that fits right at home on the handheld. I don't know what long standing fans have so much against it, but I think they would like it if they gave it another chance, instead of just hating it for the sake of hating it. I mean, if it could make a fan out of just one person (me), then it must be doing something right?
Had the same thought. Also, as an experienced Pikmin player, I’ve always found charging much less satisfying than swarming. It works…but it’s a bit too easy/fast imo. Still fun, of course. But swarming feels more hands-on and keeps the challenge more balanced.

And the tutorial in this game is not the best; it dumps a ton of info into the player's lap all at once, without really giving them a chance to utilize them all. For a new player, or a Pikmin 3 veteran, they wouldn't even know that "swaming" is a concept that would exist. It can easily be assumed that "charging" was something completely new to Pikmin 3, and not adapted from anything else. Personally, I realized too late that I probably shouldn't be skipping the tutorial text, when I thought that the controls might be changed, and only figured out how to swarm by persistently trying all the combinations of buttons. But most players wouldn't be expected to do that for a mechanic they don't even know exists
pikmin 1 and 2 are great to have on the switch because we can officially take them on the go and play them without needing to be stuck to a television set plus these games have aged gracefully compared to everything else from previous gaming generation consoles
( i started with pikmin2 ) what i miss of the older games is the C stick (camera stick) being used to move the pikmins around, it was so handy to avoid deathtraps or to just gather the pikmins around nectar effectively, or to just pick stuff easily too. i wish they would have added it back in the new one, if they can make a useless hold Y menu ( honestly, i just putted the buttons in there on the shortcuts, its much more natural), then they could have made a hold button that changes the R stick action (like ZL could have been used) when held, to move the pikmins freely around. To this day, when i played the demo, i was still using the C stick to try to control them around, even if i haven't played pikmin 2 for years, also the muscle memory telling me to press Y or X (around that place on the gamecube controller) to dispatch the pikmins...
I LOVE these games. It's one of the few games my mom and I played together when I was young. This is not a prime remaster which I would obviously prefer but man I still loved playing these games again!

Higher resolution doesn't make the graphics any better. Muddy textures still look like muddy textures, they should have done some actual work in making the game look better. You can play this exact game, but even better, on Dolphin, because then you can play it at 4K and use graphics packs that do make the textures and models look better. So lazy.

Swarming is generally the best way to kill enemies in this game, from Bulborbs to Bulbears to Snagrets to land-based Blowhogs; basically anything that doesn't require throwing.

Some people prefer the "free aiming" that the Wii version provides, since you can point exactly where you want to throw, instead of having to be precise with the control stick (a light tilt moves the cursor without moving the captain, a full tilt moves both the cursor and the captain). For me, I always found the motion a bit too sensitive, since my button presses can be rather.. forceful, and my aim is too shaky to be precise (compared to using the control stick by itself). Swarming (which is mentioned in the video) is a very powerful mechanic, but in both Wii and Switch, requires holding down a button and moving a stick. I think the Switch version is preferable, since you can't swarm and move the captain on the Wii version, so slightly limiting by comparison. And finally, according to the wiki, the "crushing glitch" (where a Pikmin gets stuck under an enemy, clips through the ground, falls into the void and dies) happens far less often. I'd personally go for the Switch versions, just because it looks so much better than the older versions, and the controls hold up well. Though if it's an option, emulating the Gamecube version with graphics enhancements is the ultimate way to experience these games. Switch ports are the next best thing imo.

The only thing Pikmin 1 doesn't have is a lock on. Everything else has aged amazingly well. Just goes to show what games with a smaller scope can do.

It’s kind of the Pikmin version of Splatoon's motion controls. Meant to aid the controls, not take them over.

I'd say there are a lot of games from that era that have aged gracefully, not only Pikmin 1 and 2.

Bought the wii physical version last year before pikmin 4 was revealed. Had a blast. Felt like the the real villain of the first game was corners…..
