- On today's episode of Out the Smoke, Mark and Malcom review the Vortex (in)Direct Heat Charcoal Kettle Accessory. This bad boy is supposed to be able to channel the heat of your grill onto your meats, and cook more evenly to give you that crispier skin or bark. But does it actually?

I’ve been doing this for years on my 22” Weber kettles… I made my own by cutting the bottom out of a stainless steel salad bowl.
I use my Vortex on the Weber kettle with the round center grate removed, and sit my carbon steel wok inside it for cooking stir fry.
That sounds like a great idea!
Thanks!, gonna try that
Now that sounds like a good idea.
What size did you get?
I literally thought of this while watching this video! Such a great idea!
Let me go ahead and take this medium out of my cart. Small it is😄 #22inkettle
Small working good for you? I have the medium in my cart right now but will swap for small
The vortex people recommend the medium for my 22” Weber. Did I screw up?
Actually, they recommend both the medium and the small for the 22” Weber, which makes me wonder which is the best overall choice.
@@bobwampler3387 i bought the medium for my 22 kettle. It's a little bit to high, about 0.2 inch so I planning to make him shorter
@@edwinzimmerman7792 I also have the medium, which work fine for me for my current setup. I don’t have a height issue, unless I’m missing something.
I'm Southern but I can't understand the skinny guy in black on certain words.
Just got a weber kettle and was wondering what size, thanks for answering that question immediately
the large works well in a 22" Old Smokey.
Vortex is awesome. Love using it in my 22” weber. I have done it both ways - both as a shield and for doing indirect. Another good use i’ve found is turning it upside down and geting it screamin hot and using the big side for searing. Works great.
Can someone help me asap. I accidentally started my vortex upside down. Can I continue to BBQ my leg quarters or should I start over?? Anyone?
if you have a weber kettle there, the video would be much, much better, so people can see and decide which size they would like
Outdoorchef (might only be a european brand) grills, has the same funnel, where you can turn it around from direct to indirect grilling. Very nice concept. Great video as always
Good video. Would the mini be enough for a weber 22 inch kettle or should i go with small?
There’s even a mini vortex for the Weber Jumbo Joe, I’m eager to try!
Can the Vortex be used on cast iron grate’s?
Let’s see a cook guys.
Works great for reverse sear steaks as well! Gets the heat up fast when your ready to sear!
Do you think the small one would work in a PK360 or original?
What's the diameter of top and bottom on the large and med size?
Never used one before and now I want too. I do a lot of wings. Thanks for sharing.
You won't believe how well wings turn out indirectly around the edge of the vortex. Turns your Weber into a big air fryer. If the price tag is an issue, there are dozens of more affordable knock offs out there.
I have a Weber 26" kettle. Would the medium or the large be better. Thanks.
Medium. Large is too tall.
Well damn, I just ordered the med for my webers. OH well.
How did it work? The website says use medium but this video contradicts them
@@numerouno4168 I put it in the shed and got the medium size which works great
So nice
Where can I find that hat ?
Bought my vortex at Malcolm Shop a few weeks ago! Cant wait to cook some wings with it
Love the vortex!
good vid
Thanks, Harry!
Happy Malcom brought up which size to use for the Webber Kettle. A must get accessory for me!
Would this be too much direct heat to sear a steak if doing a reverse sear?
Nope. Great for tomahawks
Absolutely not! Just make sure to grab the right Vortex size for your grill, let it get nice and hot, and you will be good to go!
@@OutTheSmoke Mark, that’s a video idea right there, and a reason to grill another tomahawk.
