  • In which Jon and Steve of Good Buddy Fly Fishing head out for a float trip on the Chattahoochee River. They pull out some old fly rods from Jon's garage and the old Jon boat and they try to catch some trout on the fly. Will these old fly rods still work?

    If you look around on eBay they have virtual hordes of vintage fishing gear, just picked up a vintage fly fishing vest looking for a vintage trout fishing net. Love using some of the old vintage stuff the same our dads and grandfathers used for fun and can really save money on gear.

    We are starting to clear out my Dad's house. He had a Herter's fly rod that he built from a kit in the mid 50's. I paired it up with an old Pfleugar pepper grinder and took it out yesterday. No steelhead, but lots of smaller rainbows. They must have stocked the creek recently. I ground some pepper. Old glass rod, good idea, old waders, not so good.

      Don’t plan on doing a vintage waders video anytime soon. But that’s awesome about your Dad’s old gear. Some of my favorite knives I have made are out of my grandfather’s old files.

    Resumed fly fishing 6 months ago after a 30-year break, have bought a new 9'5# Redington Path II which is a delight to cast, but I also use my 1970s RG Edwards (heavy) fibreglass rod with an Intrepid Rimfly reel. On balance I have caught more fish with the vintage rod than with the new one. That may be because I use it more for blobs and lures and the Redington for light wets and dries, but anyway, it works fine (even if my shoulder is aching after a day fishing!)

    I have an old eagle claw rod that was my dads. It’s probably from the 70s. That thing is like a buggy whip! I wonder why fisherman liked such a flimsy rod back then OR has the fiberglass aged over the years making it flimsy ?? 🤔

      @sdriza 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Depends on the glass and how it was stored. I've got some Browning Silaflex rods and a couple cheapo Eagle Claw kids rods that are still ready to go.
      Had a Garcia Conolon rod that sat in the sun in a screen house for 20 years and it has turned to mush. (It was a nice rod once upon a time too.)
      Glass has a certain, "feel" to it... SLOW way down, maybe exagerate your hookset a little (if necessary), and enjoy yourself!!!

They also do trips for one day local trips, to some over night trips. Plus, the club is involved in local conservation and has about 120 Zebco combos for children to use at various events.
