    More on Dungeon Crawlers (from Wikipedia):
    A dungeon crawl is a type of scenario in fantasy role-playing games in which heroes navigate a labyrinth environment (a "dungeon"), battling various monsters, avoiding traps, solving puzzles, and looting any treasure they may find.
    Computer games and series from the 1980s, such as The Bard's Tale, Dungeon Master, Madō Monogatari, Megami Tensei, Might and Magic, Phantasy Star, Ultima, and Wizardry, helped set the genre's standards, while the primitive graphics were actually conducive to this style, due to the need for repetitive tiles or similar-looking graphics to create effective mazes.
    First-person party-based dungeon crawlers: this subgenre consists of RPGs where the player leads a party of adventurers in first-person perspective, typically in a grid-based environment. Examples include the aforementioned Wizardry, Might and Magic and Bard's Tale series. Games of this type are also known as "blobbers", since the player moves the entire party around the playing field as a single unit, or "blob".
    Many "blobbers" are turn-based, such as the play-by-mail game Heroic Fantasy, but some games such as Dungeon Master, Legend of Grimrock and Eye of the Beholder series are played in real-time. Early games in this genre lack an automap feature, forcing players to draw their own maps in order to keep track of their progress. Spatial puzzles are common, and players may have to, for instance, move a stone in one part of the level in order to open a gate in another part of the level.
    More about Dungeon Master (from Wikipedia):
    Dungeon Master is a role-playing video game featuring a pseudo-3D first-person perspective. It was developed and published by FTL Games for the Atari ST in 1987, almost identical Amiga and PC (DOS) ports following in 1988 and 1992.
    Dungeon Master sold 40,000 copies in its year of release alone, and went on to become the ST's best-selling game of all time. The game became the prototype for the genre of the 3D dungeon crawlers with notable clones like Eye of the Beholder.
    More about Eye of the Beholder (from Wikipedia):
    Eye of the Beholder is a role-playing video game for personal computers and video game consoles developed by Westwood Associates. It was published by Strategic Simulations, Inc. in 1991, for the MS-DOS operating system and later ported to the Amiga, the Sega CD and the SNES. The Sega CD version features a soundtrack composed by Yuzo Koshiro and Motohiro Kawashima. A port to the Atari Lynx handheld was developed by NuFX in 1993, but was not released. In 2002, an adaptation of the same name was developed by Pronto Games for the Game Boy Advance.
    The game has two sequels, Eye of the Beholder II: The Legend of Darkmoon, also released in 1991, and Eye of the Beholder III: Assault on Myth Drannor, released in 1993. The third game, however, was not developed by Westwood, which had been acquired by Virgin Interactive in 1992 and created the Lands of Lore series instead.
    More about Wizardry (from Wikipedia):
    Wizardry is a series of role-playing video games, developed by Sir-Tech, that were highly influential in the evolution of modern role-playing video games. The original Wizardry was a significant influence on early console role-playing games such as Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest. Originally made for the Apple II, the games were later ported to other platforms. The last game in the original series by Sir-Tech was Wizardry 8, released in 2001. There have since been various spin-off titles developed for the Japanese market.
    More about Lands of Lore (from Wikipedia):
    8
    Lands of Lore: The Throne of Chaos is a 1993 role-playing video game developed by Westwood Studios and published by Virgin Games for DOS, the PC-98, and FM Towns. It was the first installment of the Lands of Lore series. The player travels around various environments, collecting items and battling monsters in an attempt to save the kingdom from a witch named Scotia.
    Westwood wanted to create something new after being acquired by Virgin, and it was intended that the game outperform Eye of The Beholder II. Lands of Lore: The Throne of Chaos received generally positive reviews, with reviewers complimenting the graphics and the skill system, but some criticized its combat and repetitiveness. In 1994, the game was re-released on CD, adding voice-overs, including some by Patrick Stewart. Lands of Lore: The Throne of Chaos was followed by a sequel, Lands of Lore: Guardians of Destiny, in 1997.

    I suspect many people were like me: watching this waiting for a game to come up that I played, thinking that the game I played looked a lot better than these other games, only to have it come up and look just like the others. In my case it was Bloodwych, an excellent game. I distinctly remember the dungeon part of the screen being much bigger though. Of course, it wasn't. Also, why is Dungeon Master, from 1987, so much better than many of the other games, including ones from 10 years later?

    • @hamburgers140
      @hamburgers140 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      I also came here for Bloodwych. What made that one truly amazing was the inclusion of 2-player simultaneous splitscreen play (which was why the dungeon view was a bit smaller than others). With two joysticks plugged in and one-half the keyboard each, two players could each form a party of 4 and explore dungeon cooperatively (or antagonistically!), have spell dodging wars, trade, recover each others' corpses, etc. The game had a handful of other interesting experimental features, like the ability to communicate with NPCs and ask them questions or trade randomly-generated praises or insults. Really ahead of its time.

      @@hamburgers140 I finished Bloodwych. Still have the grid paper maps somewhere in a cabinet. Same with dungeon master.

    Well, Ultima Underworld 1 & 2 did technically have a grid-based level map, but free movement inside it (similar to Wolfenstein, but with height), and with diagonal walls, which greatly helped to reduce the grid feeling. Also System Shock 1 ran on the same engine. Not sure if this qualifies as "grid-based". :]

  • @PeBoVision
    @PeBoVision 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    Not including Kevin Kenney's "Tunnels of Doom" (TI-99/4a), is a noteworthy omission from your compilation. Not only is it among the earliest examples of the 3D Dungeon Crawler genre, it is also the first to include turn-based combat, the control of 4 adventurers, and auto-mapping - features used not only used in Dungeon Master, but also in the Final Fantasy series. (The first time I saw Final Fantasy combat, I immediately recognized it from this 1982 favourite)
    It is easily the most important example of Role Playing and Dungeon Crawling. Every thing that came after it (it was released in 1982) is very much influenced by it. Tunnels of Doom is the reason I bought Dungeon Master 10 years later. (and unlike it's successors, is is fully customizable, with several homebrew dungeons available for play, and an editor to make your own.
    A MUST-PLAY game from the earliest days of dungeon crawling. You didn't mention it so thought I would.

    Albion (1995) is another one - it used a mix of top-down navigation and first-person pseudo-3d. It was the same makers as Amberstar, and Ambermoon (1993) the latter of which is also missing. Well there are a few I can think of but they might not fit the definitions of this collection. Wikipedia has a list of early first person maze games which is worth a look for the history.

      Start a new game, follow Thera to the downstair, then pull, raise, and pull the lever down. Go around the corner (left, forward, left, forward forward, left) and search the left wall for a new hidden wall tile. Open it and pull the lever inside. Turn around and search the new hallway for another hidden tile concealing a high-tier weapon: the very sharp dagger. This secret is only possible on a new game and is disabled once you go downstairs. Will you help me crack the mystery of the "JIM" area in the Dwarven Fortress level? It is in the vacant southeast corner and contains a full set of Ancient Armor. I do not know a legal way to reach it. Afri's Orb (minimap) will show halls beyond the walls by the barrels in that area if you need proof.

    All I wish for is a version of all Goldbox games with controller support. Where you can navigate options with the dpad and whatever option you select, you press X and it comes up with a choice of what you want to do. You press A and it selects that option. It would be SO amazing and fast in battles.

      I flunked one year of college due to Dungeon Master. Well, to be fair, I didn't know what I wanted to do so my mother pushed me towards accountancy. I totally hated it, and played Dungeon Master instead of reading the incredibly boring books about tax laws and finance. Then I restarted doing computer science, something I realized I would be very much into, and never looked back.

I think there were some 8 bit NES games that may not be in the video but I played them sparingly and have a hard time remembering their names (was Swords & Serpents in the video?). You may have missed one or two games in this genre that you had to type in from magazines like "Compute!". Otherwise it's a pretty good video.

And you could never know what was awaiting you around the corner. And the "lore" and stories. Not complex games. You had fun almost immediately in your gaming!
