You’d think that someone would have a quick burn spell to damage Marik’s remaining life points when he paid the near suicidal life point cost for Winged Dragon of Ra or have a bigger selection of monsters on the field for Ra to plow through while they could think of a strategy to end Ra’s presence.
neofiresonic That’s kind of odd since Joey (while being possessed by Marik) was using burn spells against Yugi. Also, Lava Golem is basically a giant burn spell that slowly eats away at the controller’s life points in exchange for giving your opponent a giant beatstick.
I just want to say I love how you've been using the timestamp feature to separate each discussion and each one has a cute little jokey name. I notice it every time and go back to see ones I missed because they make me laugh.
It's weird, but Ra would probably be a bit better if it had the "This card's attack and defense are equal to the monsters used to tribute it" effect instead of its life drain effect.
Helpoemer and Nightmare Wheel was so cool and he was the perfect parallel counterpart for the final boss role that started with Pegasus and Relinquished.
It facilitated a lot of busted plays which is why it was used and it was at a time when Graveyards were either starting to become second hands or it was one of those, it doesn't matter if I -2 if I'm going to win the game.
You can get around the "Magical Shard Excavation" cost, by using cards that can activated when in the graveyard (especially a monster's special ability allows it to be special summoned from the graveyard).
I don't even play the game and haven't watched the show in almost 15 years but TH-cam recommended this vid and I watched it all because it's interesting.
I played a Yami Marik themed deck in a tournament (and won it). It's basically a torture deck with instant kills, like Magical Cylinder. Nightmare Wheel with Lava Golem was fun, the Winged Dragon of Ra was just the spice in the deck, not the main theme. So it was a highly modified version of the deck played against Joey Wheeler. I recommend it for beginners too.
On Speed Duel, some of his cards have been historically played Nightmare is a meta defining staple in the current NA format (EU has Jinzo). Not only does it stop a monster, but it also starts a ticking time bomb in a 4k format. But its real use is with the Marik Skill that gains a counter every time a player loses damage (max 3). Remove 2 counters, discard a random card from opponents hand. Remove 3 counters and destroy any face up card. Drillago is part of a Machine anti-Moth deck (Parasite Paranoid and Perfectly Ultimate Great Moth are a tier 1 strategy). Machines have a Skill that gives them Spell Immunity, meaning Parasite Paranoid does not affect them. Newdoria is a staple now in Speed Duels because of the removal effect. Coffin Seller is also seeing play in burn decks. Byser Shock also sees play in NA format since we dont have Jinzo yet and this OTKs well with a Moth deck. For those curious about Moth deck. 3 Parasite Paranoid, 2 Perfectly Ultimate Great Moth with Cocoon of Ultra Evolution Skill. As for old TCG formats, Malevolant Catastrophe saw play as a side option in the Synchro era when Heavy Storm was banned. And Black Pendant is part of a Reversal Quiz FTK strategy in Goat (and idk if any other format).
Fun fact: Holding arms and holding legs in the manga were originally Byser shock and Viser death. Both being torture devices used on Mai. The anime changed them because it was too brutal for the anime. Speaking of that duel...the yami no game Marik did there was entirely diffrent. Both players would take the same damage to their bodies that their monsters took. For Example Mais Amazon Monster destroyed Makyra by cutting his head off...yes Marik lost his head and still continoud. It was more like a trauma but VERY real.
Its been a long time since I watched it, was that the battle where marik is basically nothing but a single eye at the end to power up his big move? Like as they lost life points their bodies were vanishing?
You forgot "Dark Spell Regeneration", Marik played it against Yugi at Battle city finals but it was a spell card not a trap :) And Juragedo's buff effect remains until the end of the next turn ^^
Basically YuGiOh has so many graveyard effects, that if you have a max card deck and get Grass in one of your first few draws, you can win the game just based on the graveyard effects.
He had an anime/manga-only card called "Surprise Attack from the Darkness" that let you repeat your battle phase. That card would be so broken in the real game lol.
I always thought that Revival Jam in the cartoon was pretty busted since it would come back immediately after being destroyed, rather than during the next Standby Phase like in real life?
Back in the day, when battle city pack dropped, I remember there being a spell (some arrow thing), a trap, and Ra sphere as the top rarest cards. Randomly got all 3 from the first 3 packs I got haha. Never knew Sphere was an ok card till years later.
Makyura's biggest claim to fame was its involvement in the old Exchange of the Spirt FTK before the errata. Get Makyura in the graveyard and then get 14 other cards in the graveyard to trigger EotS. EotS then swaps the graveyard with the deck for both players so you win since your opponent effectively decks out.
People often forget that Marik was basically the king of the black market of yugioh cards, he could literally get any card he wanted any moment, even the most rare and powerful cards.
My favorite part about Mariks deck was the fact that you were about to gain crazy life points and have the trap cards like coffin seller to inflict damage to your opponent but of course his God Card was the finisher.
Machine duplication with tuningware and magical stone excavation desyncro back and just looping trishula to banish you opponents hand, field and grave or which ever is available since you only need to remove one card if you activate its effect
You likely have been told this already, but I decided to watch some of the anime a few days ago (the semi-finals of Battle City before Virtual World 2), and apparently Ra's attack boost depends on how it's summoned in the anime, with it's TCG LP base boost being when it's special summoned and the "sum of the monster's atk/def used for it's summon" when it's tribute summoned. I haven't seen it's Raigeki effect, but I'm guessing that happens post-Virtual World 2. Funny enough, apparently these effects were too complex for Pegasus to put into english, so he had the card's text be the way it's written in hieroglyphs, and only appear once it's on the field, because I guess good card design wasn't a priority for the creator of the game.
I think all 3 God cards are not the Gods but constructs or servants of them. Obelisk is a statue, Ra is a mechanical dragon and Slifer is the dragon of the God (no matter how you look at it Osiris has nothing to do with Slifer).
It's pretty difficult for a card that cannot be used in a duel to make it into a discussion based on how successful the cards were at tournaments :/ but yeah, Card of Last Will was obviously really insane in the anime!
I’m sure Konami has its reasons but I really don’t like when banned cards get an errata to make them playable it’s taking the impact and status of what made them so great I The first place but hey what do I know
Then they would stay on the banlist forever and we would never be able to use them i felt the same way but its actually better that way at least we can say we can play those cards
@@ReallyPhilly215 first off, this actually makes it so you can never play those cards, because their real effects are changed forever. in addition to this, it means you can no longer play the originals in traditional format. by changing these legacy cards' effects its essentially erasing history

One of the funniest things that ever happened to me- was playing on Nexus and someone spear mode'ed my entire field, thinking they had just made a huge play. ...I was playing a Ra deck.
Even though Temple of the Kings was an Odion card, I am a little astonished no FTK/OTK took use of it effectively. It seems decent on paper for things like Chain Material/Trap Trick. I get its not searchable and inconsistent, but all it takes is one Chain for cancerous plays with Fusion Gate.
That's a Duel Links thing. You can only have 3 total copies of those cards in your deck. So if you wanted to play two different cards with that restriction you'd have to play like two of one and one of the other
@@Dzeeff Ohhhh right! Now I remember! It took me a while to remember! Gosh, thank you so much! It took me while that limited number cards don't mean just a restriction of copies of a card but it also means you can't have other limited cards together. Like if you have a limited card with the number 1 on it. You can't have another that say 1, 2, or 3 because the limited card with the number 1 on it doesn't let you have the other limited cards be in your deck because it only allows for 1 copy of a limited card. Hopefully you'll understand what the heck I said there.
Honestly magical shard is just spell reproduction but better cause spell reproduction requires discarding 2 cards while magic stone just needed 2 of any cards. Funny story my friend got shards in a pack but didn’t tell me and the turn after I play spell reproduction for dark hole he play shard to get his monster reborn back and that was honestly my first time experiencing yugioh power creep
I'd love to see more Marik support but more to do with the burn/stall strategy he used instead of more Winged Dragon of Ra support. Retrains of helpoemer, Gil garth, finally make vampiric leech an actual card, then a new nightmare wheel. I really don't have any other ideas rest would probably be just brand new support that helps fiends/slimes but also does burn dmg. Maybe a lava golem fusion that when its sent to the grave you summon a lava golem to their side of the field
A retrain of Revival Jam so it can't be destroyed by battle or card effects much like the anime as well as Viser Des and Shock to actually be good level 4 cards. Make Joyful Doom, Surprise Attack from Beyond and Class System cards that shut down plays by draining atk and boosting your LP, replaying your battle phase and negating card effects respectfully etc
I saw Marik's deck described on TVTropes like this: It's a deck with powerful cards, but he struggled against Joey and Mai because he built his deck specifically to counter Yugi's. Gee, good things Manga/Anime Ra could pull new powers out of its butt as the plot demanded.
I think that's wrong. There was hardly any struggle against Mai. He made her play his way nearly the entire duel. And He underestimated Joey and it nearly cost him the match. He wasn't gonna do the same against the one person he wanted to win against.
just some correction: Lava golem is nerfed in DL not because its OP or everyone's complain, in fact its already not seen play in the competitif level. but it nerf because in Xyz era update there is so many cards that has burn effect too like gagaga cowboy so konami nerf the burn to half not just lava golem

I think Marik could transfer Ra's ATK to his life points anytime, so quick burn spells wouldn't do anything.
Burn spells and burn effects weren't allowed during battle city for some reason, that was one of the "rules"
neofiresonic That’s kind of odd since Joey (while being possessed by Marik) was using burn spells against Yugi. Also, Lava Golem is basically a giant burn spell that slowly eats away at the controller’s life points in exchange for giving your opponent a giant beatstick.
@@joshuaolsoncook They literally said why he was using burn spells.
It's been so long since I watched that arc that I'd forgotten about most of those cards. Great video!
Shoutout to Lava Golem for being able to break Horus Lockdown board (even with shit like plasma and jinzo) single-handedly back in the day.
Duelist kingdom holds a special place in my heart but man Battle city was intense.
To me, Battle City is basically what Yu-Gi-Oh! is.
Love these videos Dzeeff, your old school content is fantastic
There's also the anime exclusive "Vampiric Leech" that can fucking attack on the first turn! Can you imagine having shit like that in real life? 😲
The ghost rare card of Ra looks so cool though. I love the Yugioh card art. Thanks for the awesome content.
I waiting for vampiric leech, steel eels and zombie jewel.
Helpoemer and Nightmare Wheel was so cool and he was the perfect parallel counterpart for the final boss role that started with Pegasus and Relinquished.
Hey Dzeff, u forgot about "The Winged Dragon of Ra-Immortal Phoenix" and "Egyptian God Slime".
Marik had the same power as Yugi, which was to make up BS effects in the middle of a duel, but saying them so confidently that they just worked. lol
Magical stone could be a discard card for a deck+spell recovery..I think it's decent for nowadays, just no one uses it
It facilitated a lot of busted plays which is why it was used and it was at a time when Graveyards were either starting to become second hands or it was one of those, it doesn't matter if I -2 if I'm going to win the game.
You can get around the "Magical Shard Excavation" cost, by using cards that can activated when in the graveyard (especially a monster's special ability allows it to be special summoned from the graveyard).
@@neosonic199 exactly,discard a card get a card back,set up 1 card in gy
I love marik's style ... a burn defensive deck to stall until he summons ra for an OTK
I feel like there isn't enough appreciation for the chapter titles of this video
On Speed Duel, some of his cards have been historically played
Nightmare is a meta defining staple in the current NA format (EU has Jinzo).
@@chrishubbard64 no the duel with Mai was the first time we see the real Ra. In the anime they lose memory of people they know
You forgot "Dark Spell Regeneration", Marik played it against Yugi at Battle city finals but it was a spell card not a trap :)
And Juragedo's buff effect remains until the end of the next turn ^^
I’d like to see a competitive analysis on Grass is Greener and why it’s banned. Duel Links just put this card on its first forbidden list.
Basically YuGiOh has so many graveyard effects, that if you have a max card deck and get Grass in one of your first few draws, you can win the game just based on the graveyard effects.
I wanted you to review the anime effects...
Exactly.
Except Blue-Eyes.
@@ShiningJudgment666 kaiba has money
I remember my friends hating me for using Magical Stone Excavation, even just on spells like Raigeki or Monster Reborn
No one likes playing against $200 cards. :P
Really, I enjoyed it when Yami Marik first used it and the motions he uses when playing it.
In the future it would be nice if you did a comparison between the card in the anime/how it was used, and the card in the actual tcg.
Wait, with the wording of Machine Duplication, can you just weaken a strong machine type on your field to summon copies of it from the deck?
Sure
@@Dzeeff muahaha!
(Plans an Infinitrack invasion for the ages)
Future Suggestions:
How broken were Yugi’s Spell and Trap Cards
How broken were Joey’s Spell and Trap Cards
My favorite part about Mariks deck was the fact that you were about to gain crazy life points and have the trap cards like coffin seller to inflict damage to your opponent but of course his God Card was the finisher.
i had davinators marik voice in my head this whole video
Lava golem is still one of my favorite cards. Forgot about makyura, pre errata
I still love Sphere Mode in any deck that doesn't have a consistent Normal Summon, but I think Droplet and DRNM are played over it for a reason
Did you do a video for fudo yusei?
Is it me, or does ra look like a mech?
And why do his joints look similar to those on some xyz monsters like tachyon dragon
I think all 3 God cards are not the Gods but constructs or servants of them. Obelisk is a statue, Ra is a mechanical dragon and Slifer is the dragon of the God (no matter how you look at it Osiris has nothing to do with Slifer).
What about card of last will? He had that and it was even more broken than the printed one. +4 possible and he could combo it with Makuyra.
It's pretty difficult for a card that cannot be used in a duel to make it into a discussion based on how successful the cards were at tournaments :/ but yeah, Card of Last Will was obviously really insane in the anime!
i love the part names in the time bar
I didn't realize that the anime effects weren't the TCG effects until I got into yugioh duel links
I’m sure Konami has its reasons but I really don’t like when banned cards get an errata to make them playable it’s taking the impact and status of what made them so great I The first place but hey what do I know
It would be cool if they just made retrains instead, like Pot of Desires for example.
Whose going to talk about Marik's remove trap spell card that apparently also negates the effect of the trap card it destroys?
I thought that cards like "Remove Trap" is a basic card for a main villain to have, but it has helped him.
Someone cheated me out on the lava golem effect. I used lava golem to sacrifice his monsters but he kept claiming that his judgement negated the song summoning and therefore he got to keep his monsters.
Marik's deck was a Ra torture deck. It was designed to slowly torture the opponent by slowly whittling the life point until he drew Ra.
How would you make empty jar today with out the use of the other jar's just morph+needle worm to Mill their deck?
Still waiting on a TCG-exclusive "The Shadow Realm" field spell to replace "Mound of the Bound Creator
" as Marik's version of a field spell.
-Cheats like draw 2 (like Fallen Paradise), burn damage (like the duel with Joey) or other handicaps (like with Mai) are welcome-
One of the funniest things that ever happened to me- was playing on Nexus and someone spear mode'ed my entire field, thinking they had just made a huge play.
...I was playing a Ra deck.
I've had this question for a while now. Why is there limit number of 3 on some limited cards if you can only 3 copies of a card in your deck anyways?
Aaah too bad I was expecting some reference to Last Will or Hell Poemer but that video was cool !
I love helpomer but its annoying to get his effect off
@@AzureOrca Yeah being able to discard it would be too good I think ? Especially for the game back in the day
@@numeron703 discard would be to easy, just make it sent from field to graveyard by card effect.
What about raigeki the card Marik gave to Joey when he mind controlled him to fight Yugi
Marik: I can do whatever a fuck I want, Yugi!
Yugi: What kind of bullshit is this? Only I can do that.
there is also that card that made you draw a card whenever a monster was sent to the gy
People forget though when Kaiba did takedown a God in the last movie.
Are we gonna get some for the other series?
I saw Marik's deck described on TVTropes like this: It's a deck with powerful cards, but he struggled against Joey and Mai because he built his deck specifically to counter Yugi's. Gee, good things Manga/Anime Ra could pull new powers out of its butt as the plot demanded.
I think that's wrong. There was hardly any struggle against Mai. He made her play his way nearly the entire duel. And He underestimated Joey and it nearly cost him the match. He wasn't gonna do the same against the one person he wanted to win against.
Nice mention of D Dude Turbo.
don thousand: *summons inumber 1000:numeronious numeronia*
marik: *tribiutes the op card to give don a chiken*
don thousand: D:
marik: :D
just some correction: Lava golem is nerfed in DL not because its OP or everyone's complain, in fact its already not seen play in the competitif level. but it nerf because in Xyz era update there is so many cards that has burn effect too like gagaga cowboy so konami nerf the burn to half not just lava golem
Is it possible to lower a machines monster like cyber dragon 2100 atk to 500 and then use machine duplication to special summon 2 cyber dragons with 2100 atk ????
Yup! You can even Machine Dupe a card like Cyber Dragon Core and summon two Cyber Dragons from your deck :)
I hate that you skipped over pot of greed. Really wanna know what that card does
Yo how do i link away sphere mode?
Can’t wait until you get to the Pegasus video
I thought Ra let you turn it into Phoenix and you could add ur life points to the attack point of Ra?
Do Pegasus and Bakura next.
Left arm offing could be used with parallel world fusion
So what pot of greed does?
U forgot that one trap card that was so good when we got it it say on the card can't be use in a dule can't remember the name of it but remember it says if you have no cards in hand draw x cards don't remember how many I believe it was 5:
Card of last will, its banned and camy be played but I think that's what you were referring to.
The quickest out to golem imo is to Synchro with it
i think its funny that for a dude with big ties to ancient egypt, Yami Marik have a shit ton of high-tech machine looking monsters.
Dzeef, could you do a Deck Profile on Gem Knights now that Block Dragon is banned?
