Not so lucky this time Gareth. My 1889 Sovereign had Jubilee head. My luck has gone_ iwas knocked off my bike 17/5/23 broken neck, fractured skull, so no detecting for a while, but have your videos to watch . Thanks
Michael, firstly I am very sorry to hear of your nasty accident, sounds terrible, but you are still here, which is the main thing, and broken bones will heal over time. You'll be back out detecting soon enough and you'll be excited after a bit of a break. Maybe not so lucky this time, but you know when you get out there every week, week after week knocking on the door, those special finds come up... AND on Sunday just gone (speaking of Sovereigns), I only went n found a 1904 Edward VII full Sovereign!!! Can you believe that?!
hello not a good day for you but your be back far better im sure all the best Anne 🌈
Hey there Anne, not a great day finds wise and a very hot and sticky day, BUT you are totally right - I was in this area again yesterday (not these fields) and I only went n done it again and found another gold coin!!!!!!!
@@TheDukesOfDerbyshire wow that is on my bucket list allways lol never found a gold coin but still time thou good luck to you too you do work at it hard finding them all the best Anne
@@annemason7845 I'm sure you will find one eventually if you can get the right kinda location. This was my 9th, I've been incredibly fortunate. Still can't find a gold ring for love nor money!! 😆
What a stunning place. Weather here is gonna be great this weekend and i cannot wait to hit the hills. Love the content.
It certainly a beautiful place to be when the sun is shining and the sky is blue (if a bit warm!!). In what part of the world are these hills you will be searching? It's all about the hills, that's where the gold coins are, let me tell you that :) Thanks again for tuning in and supporting what I do. Gareth
@@TheDukesOfDerbyshire I'm in Belfast. We have a lot of mountain space on our doorstep, so not much travelling involved. Have found a lot of things that build a picture of military services from across the world being stationed here. The lower end of hills I have found bronze age artifacts but have stopped digging until museum can collect and I get a clear picture of permissions and land ownership.
It's an amazing hobby and you feel like a bit of a psychic medium building a picture of who owned the artifacts lol
You have a great weekend bud and others have said, your videos are incredibly well edited and presented.
@@epicchannel4724 that sounds amazing! I visited Belfast many years ago, lovely people and crazy accents haha. Those mountains sound like they are oozing history!! Keep at it and thanks again for the kind words, I probably spend a bit more time than most editing, as I like it to be neat, tidy and pleasing on the eye!!
Thanks Gareth for your kind words about my injuries ( bike and car). I'm spending my rest time to ring for more land permission.Meanwhile I'm enjoying your videos and Scottish Detectorist.
No worries Michael, get well soon buddy
hi Gareth wow what wounderful views hope you have a great weekend had my first coin this week and gorge 6th farthing
Hi mate, yes the views here on a day like this take the breath away and makes the mind feel very at ease. Congratulations on your George VI farthing. I can tell you I had a magical weekend, another special and wonderful gold find that I still cannot believe.. I don't know what is going on in 2023, but I've now found 3 gold coins!!!
Good day out Gareth. Though you may not have found much you still found stuff and it is beautiful there. Good luck on the next adventure. Take care mate 🦘🦘😁👍
Hi Andrew, its definitely a stunning location and its a place which makes you work hard for finds. I can tell you I have had a tonne more luck on my next 2 hunts, 2 silver coins with Marcus when we spent 24 hours on the big green hillside. Then Sunday afternoon I had another one of those magical moments that just keep on happening this year... Gold coin number 3 and a bucket list gold and first for me
Hi mate well that's a monster button and a nice spindle whorle to and the coin ball looks like my coin balls 😂 , well a few decent finds and it could be a well or an old lead mine shaft 😲 and as you say if you are not feeling it you could be in for a disappointing day but still great to be out there , nice one mate 👍
Hi mate, it sure was nice to be out there, but man at the time I was so hot and sticky. When I get like that, its so draining and tiring when you working really hard to find signals, then digging up lumps of lead. Its a hobby that is made for tough people, and I'm not that tough haha. This is why I thrive off autumn and winter metal detecting. But I battle on through the warmer seasons
Some days are diamonds, some days are stone, all is good in the world, cheers again for another goodun Gareth.
Hi mate, you have no idea how right you are here. But for a day like this, my goal is still to make a nice watchable and some what entertaining video :) And the diamond days you speak of, well i can tell you I had one of those on Sunday just gone, not diamond, but GOLD
Hope your enjoying the weather Gareth, down hear in Devon its been baking hot. Another enjoyable video Gareth with stunning scenery. The brass reel would have used to hold cotton for needle work i think. Well done on your finds an enjoyable hunt.
Hi John, yeah the weather has been lovely but not ideal for metal detecting. It got up to 27 degree's today. I got sunburnt at a BBQ on Saturday haha. Off to Lanzarote on Saturday for a well earned week away. Thanks very much for visiting my channel. G

Hello there, thanks for taking time out your day to watch this video. it really is a beautiful location. I was up there again yesterday, but it was very very overgrown. I may not visit that permission until autumn/winter now when it all dies back down. Certainly a special place for me though. A very picturesque place to detect on. Beautiful part of the UK! Good to see you again today, Gareth. Watched the Seagulls game, and I’m happy! Say hello to the ladies of the household. See you on the next. Cheers Gareth. ❤🇬🇧👍🙂🇺🇸
Hey there Martin, good to hear from you, how are you holding up??? This is indeed a beautiful place to metal detect, but you have to really work hard to make finds. Martin, I found another gold coin on Sunday!! I will email you with some photos!! Gareth

Hi mate, I am very lucky and feel very blessed, I put a lot into this hobby and trying to find places like this where I can make these scenic videos. what a stunning video Gareth the views and quality outstanding ,on a day like this i would be sitting by the pool with a glass in my hand cheers
Hi James, thanks so much, I took a slightly different approach with the thumbnail and video title to this one as none of the metal detecting highlites stood out or were worthy. Hi John from Manchester, pleased to meet you. Wow that's one hell of a comment to receive, I am very humbled. I just love getting out there into the wilderness, capturing my day, then seeing what I can put together in my own unique style. You'll see many other channels starting to emulate what I do, but they can never quite manage to put the full amount of work and effort in that I do :) Thanks again for your immensely kind words, catch you on the next one. Great video. I had a good chuckle when you complained about how hot it was and that it had to be 20 degrees. Try Florida where I live. we get 30+ degrees in springtime here. I am a transplant. I was born and raised in Feltham Surrey. I don't miss all that rain and grey skies but you have better detecting.
Hi, haha its a different kind of heat over here, there was literally no air, no breeze, just sticky 20 degree heat. I'm one of these people who struggles with hot weather. I don't mind sitting under a palm tree sipping mojitos. Metal detecting and doing what I do, carrying all the kit around is very tiring. I do love the climate here though, we get a bit of everything. I imagine Florida is sunny all year round :) Thanks as always for tuning in and watching. G
Gday Gareth a thought on the black hole, if there are so many lead mines around its possibly a ventilation shaft to a mine. The adit ( mine entrance) could be at the base of the mound or hill unless its been filled in. The small drum thing you found could be a bobbin from an old sewing machine. It was wound with cotton and placed in a hole below the plate where the needle went through and a cotton reel was loaded over the top. When threaded and working the needle would push the cotton through the cloth and puck up the thread from the bobbin to make a stronger seam, i think. I think they also use the same principal on modern machines today. Hope this helps 👍👍
Hi there Steve, thanks very much for taking time out your day to watch this video. Also, thanks very much for your insightful comments regarding the mystery hole and the mystery item, it is really appreciated. Not been back on these fields in a while, they are a bit overgrown at the moment, hard work finding somewhere to go at the moment, can't wait for autumn. Thanks again and catch you on my next episode (uploaded this morning). G
Another great video Gareth - so green and such a wonderful old landscape there ! Never mind not finding any stunning finds - it can't be silver every time. Thanks for sharing this with us - much appreciated like !
Hi there Troy, yes you are right it is a beautiful place especially on a day like this, but you know with my business, if I do not make any finds, then there will be no video, no matter how much nice scenic shots I captured. It is always my primary goal to make at least 10 finds. Got 2 very exciting videos coming next, I've done it again Troy, something very exciting happened on Sunday..

Someone buried that 2p
Hello there Steve, I really enjoyed this comment, thanks so much for your kind words. England and the United Kingdom has a very rich history dating back thousands of years. I do not find much Roman or Saxon searching pasture fields as this kind of stuff is probably too deep. Need to be on ploughed and arable land. BUT I only detect pasture because its what I love doing. The world is definitely a different place, I sometimes wonder that I was born 500 years too late and would have preferred those medieval times :) Thanks so much for tuning in and watching this video, I hope to see you again. Gareth
How brilliant to have that land Gareth, positive vibes sent your way kid..
Yes mate, I have to keep finding new places to go as the groups try to follow me and take over. Always one step ahead me
It always amazes me some of the fields you have with your permissions, it is like your digging on a fairway of a golf course lol. My fields at the moment are waist high with grass and I am waiting for the owner to do the yearly cut. Oh well, you cant win them all, need some new ground, beach again I suppose, tourists (or grockles as we call them locally) are starting to appear with the weather, but not really the finds I'm after. Have to do for now I suppose. As for your session, I know the feeling (like many of us), some days we just can't wangle anything to write home about out of the ground. Always the next time though ;-). All the best bud and luck for your next time.
Hi mate, some of my permissions are also waist deep high, but its all about location. This place is very high, its exposed to the elements and doesn't really grow very fast. Plus more often than not there are sheep on there chomping away. It is awesome to have places that are detectable all year round. 100% of my permissions are 100% pasture fields so the summer months are harder for me. Love it when winter time comes around. Although in summer it is much easier to make nice TH-cam films. Thanks as always for tuning in and supporting what I do. G
Very well could be an old well. Maybe use your old maps and see what was there. Thanks for sharing
Hey there buddy, I already checked the old maps, no wells anywhere near, but man you should see how many lead mines there are in the surrounding area, they are literally everywhere for miles. Always say it, Derbyshire the lead capital of the world :) Thanks as always for taking time out your day to watch. G
You’re welcome buddy. O wow. That makes it difficult to detect I’m sure.
The hole is more likely to be a mineshaft rather than a well. You did better than me the last time I went out, six horseshoes and a bent 20p piece. That was on a really promising site adjacent to a Roman road just north of Derby too.
Hi Tom, I did wonder if it was a shaft, do you think someone has blocked it up so people/animals can't fall down? Its definitely a promising site, but its a site you have to work hard on to make finds. What metal detector are you using? You are doing something not quite right if you are digging iron horse shoes.. I think in 8 years metal detecting I've only ever found 2 or 3. Have you seen my Beginners Guide To Metal Detecting, you can see it here if not:
th-cam.com/video/UmR8OgI43uw/w-d-xo.html
Thank you for visiting my channel and for watching this video. Hope to see you again. Gareth
@@TheDukesOfDerbyshire Using a Vanquish 540, I pretty well knew they were horseshoes from the signal, but I was finding nothing else so I was digging them up out of boredom. Never come across such empty fields before, not even any cow tubes. This was right next to the Roman road so I had high hopes.
@@TimMellor-xe5xp perhaps in the past there have been group digs on there and stripped it bare of everything other than iron. You have a very good and very capable machine
@@TheDukesOfDerbyshire That's probably the case, oh well, you get days like that 😄
Even on one of your quiet days you still managed to find a spindle whorl!! 😂
That hole looked like it could of been an old well.. definitely worth detecting around 😊
Such lovely scenery 😍
Hi mate, haha yeah, this place seems to be a good spot for finding the old lead stuff. I thought well too, but on all the old maps there is no well, just lead mines. Gotta love this hobby, always left to the imagination!!
@The Dukes Of Derbyshire lead mines!! Wicked.. no wonder you find so much of the stuff lol..

Wow mate, what a landscape! I'd be happy just to be in a place like that whatever the finds. Love the production of this video 👌✨
Hi buddy, yes I totally agree and feel the same. But obviously in order for me to make this metal detecting TH-cam video, my primary goal is to find enough finds to warrant making a video. I didn't really accomplish that so leaned on the idea of talking about the mystery hole. I was really happy with how this one turned out, its a fun video. Thanks as always for taking the time to watch, hope to catch you on the next episode. G
Well at least the weather was stunning. There's a chance that hole could have been used for lead smelting. Looks too small to be a shaft and with the limestone around there weather just would just drain away. Also I think a group did was on them fields the other year or very very close to that one at least. Better look next but still a great video all the same
Hi mate, yes the weather and views really were stunning. That's a great shout that the hole thing could of been used for smelting, it really is a mystery. Definitely not a well as the old maps do not show a well being anywhere near the site. I Don't think a group have been on here, land owner would have mentioned it. Plus there would literally be nothing metal left in the ground here
@@TheDukesOfDerbyshire must have just been close by and you'd be very surprised what gets mixed I've literally followed behind someone before or rallys and have had hammered and Roman that people have just walked over. It depends on what the experience people have. Just going back to the hole the other use it could have been a privy 😆
Great video as always. Great scenery. Out of interest, have you updated the deus? Cheers.

Could be a mineshaft but not a clue, shame not much came up but rhat wouldn't be a bad day for me lol.
Hi mate, I can't remember what the general consensus was. As the days metal detecting was a bit lack lustre, I used this mysterious well as a bit of click baiting haha, something different. Didn't quite work, but it definitely got a few extra views
Alright G? , Lovely video, even if you had a quiet day out. Love to hear if you did any research on that monster button, wow! Just a quick tip, I know you love sensiFT, but on a quiet day I would deffo change it up , just to try and kickstart your finds.... couldn't hurt maybe?
Hi mate, no I very rarely get any time to research anything, I've cleaned it up along with the finds but not had a closer look yet. It will end up in a box with hundreds of other buttons. Sometimes I up the sensitivity and drop the reactivity, but all this does is make the sounds a bit louder / amplified and makes targets feel bigger than what they are, which then makes it a lot more difficult to estimate what the target is. In my opinion the base program is optimal for the places I detect. But I do keep playing and comparing signals to see if I miss anything with Sensi FT
Looks like an old well Gareth
Hello there, yes that's what I though, maybe its been filled in to stop people falling down? Wonder if there's any old coins down there haha. Thanks for tuning in and watching

Wish Florida plugs were like these are mine fall apart as it is sand at best.
Hello again David, where I live and detect in the glorious hillsides, I am blessed to have soft damp earth for most of the year. In these conditions the plug squishes back into place beautifully. I like to be neat and leave almost no trace of where I've been. Respect the land and respect the land owner. Thanks again for watching. Gareth
Top of a lime kiln maybe...or the base of a furnace to smelt lead?
🤔
Helloo there, that's actually a very good shout, perhaps the best yet. But looking at the old maps there is meant to be nothing there, just lead mines. I strongly believe it is something to do with the lead mining. This field is fascinating and looks awesome from the sky
@@TheDukesOfDerbyshire aye...they're reminiscent of the fields on either side of the road leading to Buxton at the end of Via-Gelia from Cromford.
🤭
@@weedfreer indeed they are, vast amount of fields that way. My friend has permission on some, been on some of those fields couple times. Thats the area a 'none local' group (ministry of detect) is sniffing around now n taking peoples permissions and kickin them from the group. Shocking

Hi there, thank you so much, amazing videos. One question as a complete newbie, if you find anything from coin to button to piece of lead, do you have to offer it to the landowner?
Hello Nick, welcome to my channel, thank you for visiting today and for taking the time to watch this video. Also, welcome to the hobby of metal detecting, perhaps the most fascinating and unique hobby out there. That is a great question. Technically everything we find belongs to whoever owns the land. I find it beneficial to be transparent with landowners and always show them my finds. This builds a bond and shows trustworthiness. Very rarely do landowners ask to keep any of the things I find. But in recent months I did have to pay 50% of the value of a gold coin to the landowner in order for me to keep it. On another note, I uploaded this video around a year ago aimed at people just like you.. This is my Beginners Guide To Metal Detecting:

Where do you keep all your old pennies?
Hello there, firstly thanks for visiting my channel and watching this video. In the 8 long years I have been metal detecting, I reckon I have found several thousand old pre decimal pennies. The best ones which are in beautiful condition get waxed and displayed. The rest live in big sweet tubs on a shelf in my garage. Hello there, that is a very good question and one I may never be able to answer. Usually when something has a hole in it then it was tied to something. There sure is!! Thanks so much for visiting my channel and watching this video. I hope to see you again. Gareth
morning, love the vids, what were they mining?
Hello there Hamish, thanks for the kind words and for taking time out your day to watch this video. They were mining for lead. Derbyshire is famous for its lead mining industry, lots of the places I detect are littered with old shafts and mines and the fields laced with scrap lead, which I keep and recycle. Thanks again and I hope I answered your query. Gareth
Great video once again any tips for someone starting out like me with the videos.
Hi Owen thank you for the kind words. OK, these would be my tips, try to make the best quality content you and the kit you use are capable of. Try to upload as regular as possible. Try to make your videos engaging and not boring, cut out unnecessary stuff. Come across as passionate and enthusiastic, try to do something different to other channels. There are more metal detecting channels on TH-cam than ever before, all competing for the same pool of viewers. Always try to be positive and don't broadcast anything negative (a lesson I have learned). The thumbnail and video title are the key to how successful a video will be, so try to pay particular attention to them. The longer you can keep people engaged on your channel, the better your channel will perform. Its extreme hard work, extreme dedication and extremely slow going in the beginning stages. I'm almost 4 years into my channel and I've only got 10,500 subscribers, which might seem like a lot, but in the grand scheme of things, its pretty puney. If you get it right and do well, it can be incredibly lucrative, my channel is generating about £300 a month at the moment, which is pretty amazing and helps me maintain my channel, buying kit n what not. Hmm I think I about covered my thoughts here, but I am by no means an expert at all, if I was I'd have 10,000,000 subscribers haha. I hope this helps you out. Above all, just good old fashioned HARD WORK. Gareth
Thank you very much!!! 🙂
Probably a water collector from back in the day for sheep or catle.
Hello, thank you very much for coming along and watching this video and for offering your thoughts on the mystery hole. Maybe in winter time this fill sup with water? I've looked on old maps and there is no sign of any wells here. Fascinating hobby! Thanks again. Gareth
I would think a well .But what's at the bottom .
Hi Jason, its just full of rocks, I reckon its been filled in to stop people or animals from falling down to the bottom. Its definitely an interesting and bizarre feature to have in the middle of a field. I looked on many different old maps, no well is present, only lead mines! You gotta love this hobby. Thanks for watching. G
Is the Deus your preferred machine ?
Hi Malcolm, thank you for coming along to my channel and watching this video. I have been metal detecting over 8 years now and I can confirm the Deus2 is the best machine I've ever owned and ever used. I started with a Garrett ACE 250, quickly upgraded to the extremely heavy AT Pro (great machine by the way). After 3 years I went for the XP ORX, I used this for 4 years finding 4 gold coins, the gold FOB seal and countless silver coins. But the Deus2 is on another level, I've had 3 gold coins with it and half a dozen hammered silver coins. Its lightweight and the audio is superior, yes it is expensive, but you get what you pay for. Thanks again and I hope to see you on my next metal detecting video. Gareth
👍
Hello there Jillian, thanks as always for sticking with my channel and watching my weekly uploads. I hope to see you again soon. Gareth
Can't have been easy in those temps, but you found a few nice things. The whole area looks very interesting, guessing the hole is a wall or shaft? Let us know if you find out!
Hello there, I mean it wasn't boiling hot, but 20 degrees in the UK with no wind or breeze and when your working hard can be very tiring and draining. No conclusive answer yet, also there's no well on the old maps so I have ruled out a well. Is is a very interesting feature though. Thanks for coming along to my channel and watching. Gareth
@@TheDukesOfDerbyshire it's in the 20c's here today & I'm cold, but in fairness anything below 30c is cold for Cyprus lol. Yes very interesting indeed. Lots of history there. You are very welcome 😎
@@tanithmessenger3581 its 15 C here and just right 😁😁😁
@@TheDukesOfDerbyshire 😱 Brrrrrrrrr! 😂
Gotta have positive vibes mate. 😢
Hi mate, yes 100% agree, but its really hard to be positive when your been baked by the sun and physically drained of all your energy haha. I am a winter detectorist, not cut out for these summer days!!
What is warm to u on that day?
The brass wheel is a small thread bobbin for thread when u sew on sewing machine
68 f degrees is warm?
Lol.. don't come to Texas then.
It was 86 f today
It was around 20 degree's, with no air, no breeze, very hot sticky conditions. Its a different kinda heat to what you get. I was in Death Valley in September 2019, it reached 47 degree's Celsius, but it was totally bearable, although I wasn't hiking and metal detecting haha. You get a much drier heat.
Can't win them all mate
Hi there, definitely not, but I can assure you I was back to winning ways on Sunday. I've done it again, a 3rd gold for 2023 with the Deus2, my mind has been blown yet again!!! Thanks so much for tuning in and watching. G
20 c hot? You have to be soft. I’m an Aussie and that’s a good winters day. Try 40c plus for summer😂😂😂😂
It’s a different sort of heat
Hi Jayne, hahah I know 20 degree's isn't baking hot, but it is a different kinda heat as Allister said. No air, no breeze, carrying all my kit and working hard, it is very draining and tiring. It is usually always windy here, but man it was a beautiful day :) Thanks as always for tuning in and watching this softy haha. G
