And As far as the eye could see everyone was holding their hand up in the air signaling that they had named their dog Curtis Loew. Not me , i never did name a dog that ,. One of their BEST songs in my opinion. When it comes to culture, people don't realize how important music and elders are. Playing old techniques, styles and songs, to newer generations on even older equipment. It helps keep the past alive, having someone like Curtis Lowe around to influence children kept that style of blues going.

That’s how he lived until he came back to the states. Told me no one over there had ever heard of it, and it made him pretty popular.

Rural blacks and white never really had any problems,and I don't remember us having any problems when my family moved into the city and we lived one block from the "black section". The trouble didn't start until the communists took over the NAACP and set out to divide and conquer America from within.

The story behind it was crazy the drummer Artimus Pyle woke up seeing his friends dying around him and somehow managed to get up to go get help and some dude shot him because he was on his property before going out and seeing how injured Pyle was then they called for help. Whole story was wild. I just wish they had actually gotten their plane serviced. We might still have Ronnie and the Gaines siblings here with us today
Yes Ronnie was incredible a writing way ahead of his time creating stories you could close your eyes listen to the music and it would be almost like you were watching a movie or story.

Curtis Loew wasn't a real person according several interviews by the band. "Curtis Loew is not the name of an actual person from Ronnie Van Zant's life. Rather, Curtis Loew is a composite of different people, including Skynyrd lead guitarist Ricky Medlocke's grandfather, Shorty Medlocke."
But along this same theme : Rufus " Tee Tot " Payne was a real person , a street musician in Greenville , AL , circa 1931 . He tought Blues singing and playing to an eight year old Hank Williams .

The rest has to do with Ronnie Van Zant's love of all the old bluesmen and the story is a metaphor for so many of those bluesmen that didn't get to be famous and died broke. It was as much a tribute to those men by Ronnie as anything.

What moves me about this song is “on the day old Curtis Died, nobody came to pray, preacher man said some words and they chunked him in the clay” but look at the impact this man had on even just One soul! Si when you’re thinking you’re alone, and no one else cares about you, remember- your life and interactions will have had some meaningful impact on somebody you may have thought DIDNT really care, but they did! Hey- Thank you for putting this up because Ronnie(as I know from my understanding and research and a child of the south from the 70's) was absolutely everything about who a person is regardless of pigmentation but about representation and reputation. We all learn and love from so many experiences in our lives. People also learn hatred and racism the same way. Especially when we are younglings, like the lyrics says 'Curtis was about 60 and I'd probably be about 10" A young impressionistic youth not yet influenced by someone like his mama "would whip him again " for keep on going to hang out with Curtis. This is a true story by the way. The best honest things anyone can write about comes from true experiences. You can still go to the same liquor store in Gainesville FL that Ronnie would go see Curtis. The most heart fetl, and important, lines are "when old Curtis died, nobody came and prayed, the preacher said some words and they chucked him in the clay" I grew up as a yankee transplant for 10 yrs over the battlefield of Manassas VA. I was shunned and even beat up because I was from the north in the late 70's. I never ever took anything lightly when it came to equality but had been seriously influenced to think otherwise as a child. I have read that Mr VanZant did love his southern culture but was opposed to racism and violence especially with the use of fire arms. He wanted to sing his songs, drink his whiskey, and go fishing. Unfortunately, as I know from other friends of mine in current bands, that other people want to misappropriate a band's heritage and culture to make it part of some political or ideological theme regardless of the exact opposite of the band's message that is plain as day in the lyrics. Thanks again. There is a Curtis Lowe in every aspect of life for everyone if they are willing and open enough to receive the beauty and grace of the soul that lives within the human form shell. One of my favorite songs. To me it expresses how every human being has a gift. A gift that God gave to each of us and can be shared with others. Humanity will win in the end. God promised us this.
This song always takes me back to my childhood. My best friend and I used to sneak beer from his dad's fridge and go to their neighbors house, Mr. Jessie. He was an older black man and he would get drunk while we talked about chickens and told us stories. You couldn't help but love Mr. Jessie after meeting him.
I love this song and knew those boys. They went to a rival High School of mine and I worked at The Warehouse - a local Jacksonville recording studio where they did some recording. I also got a big kick out of my teenage son coming to me one day saying "Mom, You just gotta hear this song I just heard on the radio!" he drug me out to the car and turned the music up. Boy was he amazed when I knew all the words and even sang to him the words from the beginning of the song that I had missed. My teen aged boy in the mid 90s had just heard Free Byrd for the very first time. He didn't know his mom was so cool.
Fun fact: Ronnie rarely ever wrote his songs down. They were all in his head. We lost a one of a kind back in ‘77. It seems all the great ones leave us way to soon. Much love❤️

Fantastic seeing this get play! The track has been my alltime second favorite song as long as I can remember° ...the reality, respect & emotion shown in it is absolutely perfection. I can close my eyes and see all the geat, and sadly usually under appreciated, blues men of yesteryear across the country, forgotten in the shadows, playing to anyone and everyone that will listen. And the idea those local streetcorner blues guys were quietly inspiring young children who would go on to become rock legends themselves is so romantic. I see this song as a perfect tribute to them all. Glad you liked it! ° second, after only Otis Redding's *The Happy Song (Dum Dum)* which is another track with a very similar reality, respect and emotional drive; with his being a tribute to wives (Otis audibly cracking up, in my head likely giggling, when describing his wife smiling at him gets me every single time - I highly recomend you check out that track if you get a chance!)

This is an iconic song, the lyrics tell a plausible story and the musicality of this record makes it a classic. It's nearly up there with "I need you" which is in a minor key which I'm biased towards.

Skynyrd was one of the first three cassettes I ever bought, ca 1982. It was the incredible live album One More from the Road. The other tapes I got that day were Billy Joel, The Stranger, and Styx, Paradise Theatre.

It’s a cool story, and a brilliant song, but Curtis Loew didn’t really exist. It’s just more of Ronnie Van Zandt’s phenomenal lyrical writing.

What moves me about this song is “on the day old Curtis Died, nobody came to pray, preacher man said some words and they chunked him in the clay” but look at the impact this man had on even just One soul!

Also thinking of such a little boy. He can’t control this passion for music, and the amazing artist he has found. He takes repeated whippings and still goes back. That’s neglectful, in my view. You gotta help your kids explore these interests. Even if that means you take your @$$ to the corner store and watch your child watch this man.

Hey- Thank you for putting this up because Ronnie(as I know from my understanding and research and a child of the south from the 70's) was absolutely everything about who a person is regardless of pigmentation but about representation and reputation.
We all learn and love from so many experiences in our lives. People also learn hatred and racism the same way. Especially when we are younglings, like the lyrics says 'Curtis was about 60 and I'd probably be about 10" A young impressionistic youth not yet influenced by someone like his mama "would whip him again " for keep on going to hang out with Curtis.
This is a true story by the way.
The best honest things anyone can write about comes from true experiences.
You can still go to the same liquor store in Gainesville FL that Ronnie would go see Curtis.

I grew up as a yankee transplant for 10 yrs over the battlefield of Manassas VA. I was shunned and even beat up because I was from the north in the late 70's. I never ever took anything lightly when it came to equality but had been seriously influenced to think otherwise as a child.
I have read that Mr VanZant did love his southern culture but was opposed to racism and violence especially with the use of fire arms. He wanted to sing his songs, drink his whiskey, and go fishing. Unfortunately, as I know from other friends of mine in current bands, that other people want to misappropriate a band's heritage and culture to make it part of some political or ideological theme regardless of the exact opposite of the band's message that is plain as day in the lyrics.

One of my all time favorite Skynyrd songs!
This song always takes me back to my childhood. My best friend and I used to sneak beer from his dad's fridge and go to their neighbors house, Mr. Jessie. He was an older black man and he would get drunk while we talked about chickens and told us stories. You couldn't help but love Mr. Jessie after meeting him.
Next: "Saturday Night Special." Every guitarist in this band smoked.
I love this song and knew those boys. They went to a rival High School of mine and I worked at The Warehouse - a local Jacksonville recording studio where they did some recording. I also got a big kick out of my teenage son coming to me one day saying "Mom, You just gotta hear this song I just heard on the radio!" he drug me out to the car and turned the music up. Boy was he amazed when I knew all the words and even sang to him the words from the beginning of the song that I had missed. My teen aged boy in the mid 90s had just heard Free Byrd for the very first time. He didn't know his mom was so cool.

Fantastic seeing this get play! The track has been my alltime second favorite song as long as I can remember° ...the reality, respect & emotion shown in it is absolutely perfection. I can close my eyes and see all the geat, and sadly usually under appreciated, blues men of yesteryear across the country, forgotten in the shadows, playing to anyone and everyone that will listen. And the idea those local streetcorner blues guys were quietly inspiring young children who would go on to become rock legends themselves is so romantic. I see this song as a perfect tribute to them all. Glad you liked it!

Skynyrd was one of the first three cassettes I ever bought, ca 1982. It was the incredible live album One More from the Road. The other tapes I got that day were Billy Joel, The Stranger, and Styx, Paradise Theatre.
