I remember that also & it was just 2 months {10/20/1977} after Elvis died {8/16/1977} which happen to be my younger brothers 10th bday plus I live 17 miles from where Duane Allman {10/29/1971} & Berry Oakley {11/11/1972} were both killed in separate motorcycle accidents a mile apart & a year apart! My favorite part about this song is throughout the singer is telling a story to us saying "he was the finest picker", but the very last lyric switches to "Curtis Loew YOU'RE the finest picker that ever played the blues". The singer this whole time was talking to us telling us a story, but the last lyric the singer was speaking to his decreased friend directly and giving credence to the fact that he was the best blues picker who ever lived, ( and that's coming from a highly multi-talented man who has already made it big).
This couldn't be closer to the truth, the blues get so little love and has such a positive message: Even if you got the blues and everything going wrong.. Don't give up hope!
They still exist. Goto the NOLA French Quarter, or Austin, or Memphis. They are definitely fewer and far between but you can still find world class musicians playing on the streets in certain areas.
Trivia: one legend about Skynyrd was that Ronnie Van Zandt felt lost playing the big stadium concert. He said he missed seeing the people’s faces and wanted to play a small club again so he could connect with the people. So in Seattle his manager booked them incognito into a night club as “The Curtis Loewe Band” They said they didn’t fool anybody and the line to get in the door was over two miles long and cops were all upset and it didn’t work out!
If memory serves, it was a little joint just north of the city limits called "The Aquarius" - The little reader board outside just had the band listed as "The Curtis Loew Band" with no further elaboration. I once saw a band at The Aquarius called "Soft White Underbelly" that looked and sounded a lot like Blue Oyster Cult.

I named my first son after this song 33 years ago when there were no black people living in the All white town I've lived in for 53 years I thought well it's time to have one now even though he's white and he now has a little brother Zack who's Black that we were blessed with 22 years ago, any way this song has put so much love in my life and my 4 boys life for The whole human race. I always heard one of the inspirations for this song was Shorty Medlocke. Shorty was Native American, he was an american blues, county and bluegrass musician and banjo player. He was also the grandfather of Rickey Medlocke who also grew up in Jacksonville an was friends with rvz and played in Skynyrd In 1971&1972. I guess back in the day they would all go an listen, learn and play together in shorty's garage. Shorty Medlocke can be heard playing the harmonica in the Blackfoot song Train Train which he also wrote

It depends on what part of Bama you are in. Dig 2 inches deep at my house and you hit sand for about 6 feet or so. Then you will hit red clay.

Went to see them in Mobile at the Civic Center once. They played the song… That smell… And this huge cloud climbed to the ceiling. 🤣 The cops were just running around in circles. How do you arrest 15,000 people because everybody was smoking! They ended up giving up and just standing in a cluster by one of the exit doors.
