Concerned Ape's writing deservers more credit. One of Kent's high friendship dialogue's is "...I lost a lot of friends in battle. What's sad is that I can't even remember their faces." I think about that dialogue a lot. Poor Kent has suffered a lot during the war :(
Most likely Jodi and Kent got married young. As Kent did his boot camp days and basic service, they had Sam and there wasn’t a war. War started, got worse, and Kent had to go to the front lines.passionate night led to Vincent and Jodi had to raise him alone. Kent probably had leave at some point (Vincent’s few memories of his dad) but was forced to rent to the front lines for much longer now. Sam’s important years with his dad was missed so he became a “whatever” type teenager and didn’t grow up. Sadly, Vincent will miss those years too because of Kent’s PTSD unless he’s being treated. Kent loves his family and Jodi loves her family but the war messed everything up. Luckily she didn’t lose her husband or (in my opinion) Jodi may have abandoned her sons and started a new life.
Ngl I love that ConcernedApe shown a topic that isn't really talked about through Jodi. I don't think she regrets the idea of becoming a mom and wife but since she said it was a rushed choice she regret not taking the consideration of how much work it takes especially having kids young. I remember reading the r/regretfulparents sub there are parents that has stories similar to Jodi. And Jodi reminds me of my grandma, she told me she had similar regrets, she loves my grandpa, dad, and uncle she did wished she made different choices. Plus my grandpa is a air force veteran so yeah similar to how Jodi's husband Kent is a soldier.
I literally had like a whole page in my script talking about regretful parents (i also read that subreddit) and childfree stuff and deleted it because I didn't wanna deal with certain comments that I might have gotten. Sam has a dialogue when you get higher hearts with him that he doesn’t think that his mom is happy with her life and is hiding some inner pain. I have probably spent way too much time analyzing this family, because Sam is my favorite bachelor. I think another possibility why Jodi doesn’t have the boys help with chores is that she seems to be a bit of a controlling perfectionist. I’m not sure how much I would like her as a MIL. 😂
I agree with your last part about Jodi not letting them help. I remember in one of Sam's cutscenes when you get closer to him, he literally drops and egg by accident and Jodi kinda.. looses it. You're able to lie and say it was you or be honest and say it was Sam. It just kinda alarms me how upset she got over Sam dropping the egg, but didn't loose her temper when you lied and said it was you. Dunno where I'm going with this, but it's just some food for thought.
I mean, it's not like you need permission to take initiative and help. Maybe something as small as dropping an egg was enough for her to freak out because he leeches off his mom without contributing at home and just adds to the workload.
Being a parent isn't easy, you constantly doubt yourself asking if you are making the correct parenting decision. I really like the depiction of an exhausted parent in Jodi. Her heart event dialog are pretty realistic.
Realistically i don't think the character of Jodi would've allowed Sam to help her. Maybe i'm just projecting anyways, her situation and personality kinda reminds me of my own mother and a couple other women i've met throughout my life, because of that i'm inclined to think her character would have the mentality of having to do things herself around the house in order to feel at ease and feeling like having Sam do chores would only create more work for her down the line.
@@tendrillion3580 that makes sense! Maybe she'd feel even more guilty and regretful seeing Sam doing chores instead of being outside playing on his skateboard

Idr if it's from the "Canon friendly dialog" or not but there is a line that Sam tried to help his mom once, cleaning. And she said thank you, but didn't seem happy about it. And he didn't know what to make about that.
I like that Mod that makes her a Romance Option. I love how they added Events where she tells you that Kent is not the same anymore and then on a rainy night she comes to your farm and kisses you.
I've been curious as to why Vincent is so much younger than Sam. Did Kent and Jodi had a "last night of passion" before he left, making her pregnant and having Vincent while Kent was at war? I haven't gotten far in friendships with the kids(new player) but I get the feeling Vincent doesn't know his dad all that much.
I'm curious as well !! Vincent doesnt really talk about his dad much, whereas Sam seems to know him a bit better. Maybe I'll make a video on the family's timeline
Some of Vincent's dialogue suggests he has some memory of pre-war Kent, but yeah I definitely get the feeling Vincent wasn't planned. Then again, Kent has some festival dialogue musing about the possibility of a future daughter, so it's possible that they had /Sam/, not Vincent, way younger than they intended to become parents.
@@yesthatmousyiris4887 the latter is unlikely since it's just a one-off line of Kent's at the flower festival that if they ever have a daughter he'd like to give her a flower name, and the nature of Stardew is such that they're not having another baby either way.
in my opinion, I think sam was an accident when jodi and kent were young and that’s one of the leaning factors to why they got married so early. kent had to serve war sporadically, going one year to three at different periods of sam’s child and teenage years. jodi and kent had vincent after thinking kent wouldn’t be called back but they were wrong, leaving jodi with both kids. then with sam ‘having no responsibilities’ I think that’s how other people view it. I don’t think jodi knows that sam feels as if he has these responsibilities, which is taking kent’s place for vincent (you see this in sam’s 3 heart scene). that goes into my argument that sam isn’t immature, he has to step into his father’s shoes for his mother without anyone realising. he ends up acting lazy when married as there’s no motivation to be the best he can be and to continue being a role model for vincent, which is why he suddenly gets his act together after having kids.
Sam is a massively underrated and well adjusted spouse. Kent was a POW so Jodi at the very least had to know he was missing in action and was sheltering her kids from this, because while they talk about the possibility of him not coming home, they don’t seem to give it more weight than just due to the war generally. Whether that’s right or not is more than I can decide, but she let her kids be kids as long as possible with the knowledge that there was a strong possibility that at some point they’d have to bear a major loss. Neither Sam nor Vincent are overly burdened with the reality of how close they came to losing their dad. So I don’t think Jodi messed them up at all, but rather that she consciously shielded them from the stress of the situation. Her actions caused a lot of stress for herself, but her goal makes her decisions and her own burnout worth it to her.
I ended up being a single parent of a boy and girl. My ex was AWOL when my son was 1 yo and the entire time I was pregnant with my daughter. What I had going for me was that I was 28 when I had my son and 30 my daughter.

Jodi is a character that always felt off to me; she comes off as a little condescending and the type of person who always claims that she is busier than she actually is. Jodi is constantly complaining about not having time for herself because she has a lot to do...but what is it that she actually does? She has a small home with only one child who needs any type of supervision and said child spends a minimum of 15 hours a week (between Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday) with his tutor (Penny), an undisclosed amount of time with Sam (who takes him off her hands from time to time) and various hours playing outside without Jodi watching him. What does she mean she has no time for hobbies!? What is she doing with all these child-free hours!? She has a weekly work out session with the ladies. Why not do other things with her free time on Wednesdays and Fridays? Minor chores and shopping do not take FIVE HOURS to do, especially when said chores are done consistently and we see Jodi doing chores with Vincent in the house so it isn't as if the kid hinders her from getting what she needs done around the home. The math ain't mathin' here. She has the time to improve her life and work on herself, she just doesn't seem to use it. But she'll complain to the farmer about it??
I'm pretty sure Jodi is clinically depressed. You often feel like you have no time because it's so hard to do anything. Without depression, you can get a lot more done, yes, but with it, every task is a monumental chore. And worse, I don't think she realizes she has a problem - so she isn't getting help for it. She just plods along in her misery, thinking that this is just the way things have to be.
Considering Jodi's name ("Jodi" being a cheating wife) and some of her and Kent's dialogue, I wonder if there was a plan in the early stages for them to be romanceable by the farmer. Kent's cutscenes are incomplete compared to some others. Then in Spring dance event he's tense because of how open the field is and then the popcorn sets off a PTSD reaction. Jodi has misgivings about her lot in life and seemingly would not do it again if she had the chance to do it over. Both of them are seemingly in need of a change and a new face in town would have been ideal for that. I'm glad we have the game we have and overall CA made a good choice in giving them a second chance together but I do wonder.
Hey hey 👋 Just wanted to clarify that a Jody is normally spelled with a "Y" and is a man who comes and "steals" a military wife while her husband is away. So, if anything, a male farmer would be the Jody in this situation. Though I do wonder, since Jody is normally spelled with a "Y" and her name Jodi, being a feminine version of the spelling with an "I" that it could be a way of making her the female "Jody" in this situation. I do like the idea of a darker route to take and being the romantic partner. But I can completely see why Concerned would never go for it.
@@LaCrownedGamer I don't blame Concerned Ape for not doing it. As someone from a family with a history with the military I hate seeing military wives willing to cheat while their husbands are away.
I'd really like to see an official timeline for Sam's family, as he says once that Kent used to be a sanitation worker in Zuzu City. If Jodi says, on top of that, that she and Kent got married young due to him being a soldier, was there enlistment for the war, or a draft, and they got married right before his deployment? Nearest I can figure is that Kent's been deployed for several years, got a leave 5-6 years before the game where Jodi became pregnant with Vincent, then Kent goes back to war, gets captured at one point, and then is discharged and sent home after liberation, when Sam is 18-20 and Vincent is ~6. It's really a shame the farmer can't romance Kent, who could move to the farm with Vincent, let Sam follow his dreams of touring and playing music, and Jodi could run off with the Night Market travelers. In 1.6, for the Year 3 Flower Dance, Kent talks about thoughts of a future daughter, showing he'd like more kids, and that is absolutely not what Jodi would want according to her dialogs.
My mom always tells me not to make the same choices she did. Although she always reassures my sister and I that she loves us, she also tells us to enjoy our youth and don't settle down too early because we'll feel like we're missing out on so much
My first hint that she might not be ok was at the night market and how she was saying that she “longed to travel and see the word and then she signs sadly” all I could think was “girl go ahead and travel!! Take your kids with you!!” People always think that responsibilities tether them down but most of those are just in our heads. You can see and do wonderful things so long as your mind is open to them and how things just might look a little different in practice
You forgot the last bit of the dialogue: “I had a dream that I had complete freedom, no obligation to anyone but myself...Then I woke up and realized I had a full day of house chores ahead of me... But I don't regret having a family [Player]...Sam and Vincent mean everything to me!”
Some of your videos like this make me wish I knew how to code because your analysis/theory stuff makes me wish there was a mod that added more scenes of character growing some or getting help. Like maybe in the mod if you manage to get close with Jodi & her family Sam eventually asks you(or asks you & Penny) to help him learn to do household stuff cause he noticed his mom getting burnt out & we see over some more events Sam eventually help his mom around the house with it maybe making Vincent curious about helping out more. Maybe also have Jodi talk to someone about her burn out/possible resentment since she needs someone besides us to talk to(maybe a councilor while Kent is getting therapy cause while she probably doesn't need it it helps to talk things out sometimes) & it helps her a little along with Sam's cutscenes leading to when you talk to her Jodi talks about how she's been feeling better recently & is glad she's getting the help around the house.(Maybe Sam also talking about how he feels like he's achieving something thanks to helping out & is glad his mom is happier) I think my thoughts on this came from seeing a video were someone played a mod that changed Shane's heart events & flesh him out. He goes from trying to push us away, at some point talking about a friend they haven't seen in years, at some point he tried to get over his drinking problem by switching it with soda but a letter from his parents led to relapsing & at some point confronting his terrible dad. Through these heart events & Shane eventually telling everything we learn Shane use to be a prodigy gripball player that's parents banked on his skills & spoiled him only so he'd earn them money with his skills one day. I'll try not to spoil much but Shane ended up meeting a friend that is implied to be Jas's dad & eventually confirmed in the final event(at least going off what he says to him) that made him feel loved/cared for for the first time in his life that thanks to this friendship made Shane take Jas in when she lost her parents even when his own parents wanted him to abandon her at an orphanage & continue making them money. While the mod makes things a little different it was nice & helped to fleshing Shane out as we see him go threw character development as he learns to stop pushing people away & fight his demons. That mod & these videos kind of made me want to see a mod that adds extra cutscenes for characters were they get the help they need & we see scenes that add more moments to flesh them out like maybe Shane talking about Jas's parents, Abigail's parents talking about their troubles & eventually helping them work out their worries & maybe help Clint work on himself.
Thank you for the kind words!! I would seriously love to get into modding but it seems so daunting. I hope 1.7 gives us some extended dialogue and cutscenes so more characters' conflicts feel resolved!
I personally don’t like Jodi, she dorms have a job so minus the money that Kent gets for serving in the military, Sam would be the one paying for things as he works at joja/library and has his music “career” (idk if he actually makes money for that). My own personal theory is that Sam wasn’t planed and was kinda of a surprise for Jodi and Kent while Vincent was planned. I also feel that Sam does help out a bit just because of his 4 heart cutscene where Jodi freaks out about an egg?? Sam was definitely yelled at a lot as a kid..
Problem is with not giving kids any responsibilities is they're then woefully unprepared for the adult world. Whilst in theory a parent may think they're doing their children a favour by giving them an "easy, carefree childhood" it's actually going to give them a much harder early adulthood. 😅
im gonna be so honest, i really think jodi is depressed, as someone who has depression i see so much similar traits that I and many others with depression share ! she has no hobbies and the only thing that keeps her from lying in bed all day is her children who she sometimes openly says she never had i see so many parallels between her and shane, the only difference is shane has given in, he truly believes that sometimes jas’ life would be better without him in it since she has marnie whilst jodi after caring for her sons alone for majority of their life KNOWS that if she stopped looking after them that they’d suffer and that’s what keeps her going (similar to how one of the things that stops shane is how it’ll affect jas)
the only thing i would want in a future update is more opportunities to help characters out, it feels a little wrong to be at endgame and have an obscene amount of wealth with the other towns people still having problems

Hey hey 👋
Just wanted to clarify that a Jody is normally spelled with a "Y" and is a man who comes and "steals" a military wife while her husband is away.
@LaCrownedGamer ohhhh I see I see thank you for clarifying!
Very interesting! I put a note in my notebook for a future video!
I like Jodi a lot as a character. A main reason of that being is that I have known some woman JUST like her. She feels like a real person.
You forgot the last bit of the dialogue: “I had a dream that I had complete freedom, no obligation to anyone but myself...Then I woke up and realized I had a full day of house chores ahead of me... But I don't regret having a family [Player]...Sam and Vincent mean everything to me!”
Have you played the Stardew valley expanded mod. If yeah, I would love to see your analysis or deep dives to the new NPCs there and their stories
@@ahjot8257 I have! I'd love to do that!!
"You had me at ~Meowdy~"
Some of your videos like this make me wish I knew how to code because your analysis/theory stuff makes me wish there was a mod that added more scenes of character growing some or getting help. Like maybe in the mod if you manage to get close with Jodi & her family Sam eventually asks you(or asks you & Penny) to help him learn to do household stuff cause he noticed his mom getting burnt out & we see over some more events Sam eventually help his mom around the house with it maybe making Vincent curious about helping out more. Maybe also have Jodi talk to someone about her burn out/possible resentment since she needs someone besides us to talk to(maybe a councilor while Kent is getting therapy cause while she probably doesn't need it it helps to talk things out sometimes) & it helps her a little along with Sam's cutscenes leading to when you talk to her Jodi talks about how she's been feeling better recently & is glad she's getting the help around the house.(Maybe Sam also talking about how he feels like he's achieving something thanks to helping out & is glad his mom is happier)
I think my thoughts on this came from seeing a video were someone played a mod that changed Shane's heart events & flesh him out.
im gonna be so honest, i really think jodi is depressed,
as someone who has depression i see so much similar traits that I and many others with depression share !
she has no hobbies and the only thing that keeps her from lying in bed all day is her children who she sometimes openly says she never had
i see so many parallels between her and shane, the only difference is shane has given in, he truly believes that sometimes jas’ life would be better without him in it since she has marnie whilst jodi after caring for her sons alone for majority of their life KNOWS that if she stopped looking after them that they’d suffer and that’s what keeps her going
(similar to how one of the things that stops shane is how it’ll affect jas)
the only thing i would want in a future update is more opportunities to help characters out, it feels a little wrong to be at endgame and have an obscene amount of wealth with the other towns people still having problems
I agree!!
I wanna know who Sebastian's dad is...Penny too actually.
This was deep 💀
Am I wrong for taking Jodi to the movies twice this month? She needs to be.... comforted.
A little off topic but how is Jodi theorized as 40 yrs old when I was 14 my dad was 40 it makes no sense I say she's about 45 maybe 50
@@Roma_sage not off topic at all! I think a lot of characters in Stardew valley are way older than people think. People like to think everyone that's 30 is already married with 2 kids. Simply not true. I think Jodi is easily 45, same with Robin and Caroline!
@sodorart the ages of martige candidates and villagers are a hot topic in the community I say all marrige candidates are in there 20s and parents are in their 50s
@@Roma_sage you're gonna be BIG mad if you watch my video about how old I think they all are LOL
@sodorart I did it wasn't bad and that elliott has been mentioned as around 23 through 25 years old and they are all at least 21 cause they accept alc0hol in the game
I love sam and vincent they both sweet but why does vincent have pink hair that is sus if you ask me
@@milicalabovic2787 I think Jodi has strawberry blonde hair and Vincent ended up having pink hair!
