Thank you for a very informative video. I was contemplating an alternator conversion but now I will stick with the generator. It was nice to have the alternators operation clearly explained.

I am needing to replace the voltage regulator in the alternator on my ‘31 Victoria and have never ever even taken an alternator apart much less working on one. After watching your video I feel comfortable attempting the replacement.
    Thank you ‼️

Thank you for sharing with us a conversion form generator to alt. and how to convert it to a 6V. Pos. ground. Haven't had my Model A that long - I will have that option to stay stock or opt for the Alt. -------- Thank You --- Rodney

My 1924 Model T came to me with a 6V negative ground, one wire, gear driven alternator, it works great. I have a freshly rebuilt stock generator for the car, but the alternator works so well that I've left it on. I did paint it black to help it blend in some. :)

Thanks for this info. I always had bad luck with generators either over or under charging (city driving, and I never had a modern regulator for one), so I used alternators. I agree that they’re not always as reliable as the original generator.

If your cars are old enough to have a 3 brush generator, that is often an issue. That 3rd brush is adjustable for output - moving it further away from the main brush lowers the output, closer increases the output. The big problem being is that if you have it adjusted to adequately charge your battery in city driving, it will overcharge it if used for high speed driving. Conversely, if adjusted for high speeds, your battery will be undercharged if you drive mostly in the city. Especially if much of your driving is t night.

Nice excuse to work on some interesting machine. I do love the old original generators though. They are super cool machines, like how you can adjust the amps, by adjusting the brush. And how how the coil windings work. genius.

There's nothing quite as bad as Chinese aftermarket parts. Other than that you did a fantastic job!

I have one on my 1935 Coupe and it works great if you have halogen bulbs since they take way more amps to operate then the original bulbs . I was burning out my old generator using the halogen bulbs so that's why I went to an alternator system. I use the old Volkswagen headlight bulbs that resemble the 12 volt style halogen with the same base and they work great with the reflector conversion for the headlights' halogen bulbs' without changing the lense size. Everything looks original on the outside still. The 6 volt bulbs are a little more pricey than the 12 volt ones but the whole system is still 6 volt and as long as you have a good battery that's charged up real good it will maintain it but don't try to charge a low battery with this 6 volt alternator because you can burn the wiring up on the old girl since the amps are around 60 at idle speed and the wiring doesn't like it at all. Neither does the ignition switch like it very much. The one wire regulator works like a charm and you light's can help you see in the dark now. Not a dim yellow glow like the old filament type. Also as a side note ,If you have an old radio with tubes like I do it takes a lot of amps out of the batt to operate so the alternator also works great too and I use the Optima battery in good shape for the batt source in 6 volt of course . The delco 10SI is the easiest to repair and set up and anybody that can follow directions can do it with just a few tools that you can obtain at a hardware store .

One thing that alternators are not good at is charging a dead battery. Generators are much better in that regard.

If your ammeter gets hot, open it up and clean out all the contacts. Mine started smoking even at some point. luckily i noticed it quickly. Cleaned out all the contacts from corrosion, and apparently it had aluminum screws, which aren't the best for electrical connections, so i replaced them with brass, and it was all fine, never got even worm anymore.

Paul Shinn has a great video to fix ammeters that get too hot. A matter of adding solder to lug contacts inside ammeter. Great vid.

@@onewhocollects6781onewhocollects Thanks so incredibly much. I have converted these for years. Tip, if you put the capacitor back in the 6-volt alternator the voltage output will not fluctuate as much as without the capacitor. The capacitor can fix flickering LED headlights. The capacitor will work if hooked up to negative or positive ground. I really appreciate the help and fantastic video.

Curious if the charge curve and control matches that of a modern car? The problem with the original Ford generator is that the charge was unregulated and was impossible to reach a satisfactory compromise to ensure sufficient charge to replenish the battery when the lights are on as opposed to overcharging when the lights are off.

    • @onewhocollects6781
      @onewhocollects6781  ปีที่แล้ว

I would guess it doesn't because it doesn't have a separate wire to monitor the battery condition like it was made for originally. I'm not sure how these self-regulate without it, but thay do to a point.

@@onewhocollects6781 I have a '29 Model A and the battery was shot after three years. I believe it was due to overcharging. I really liked your presentation and rather than try to regulate the original generator, I think I will do what you did.
I would however like to explore how to regulate it like in a modern car while retaining the 6 volts positive ground. I was a bit surprised at the 15 amps when you started up. Did it remain at 15 or did it settle back to a lower value?

@@tedrobinson372 With normal driving, the charging goes down to nothing when there's no load on it. I don't know how much it would steadily charge with a dead battery.
