    John doesn’t sing, he opens his mouth and his heart puts his breath into words. Pretty sure If you listen hard enough you can hear angels crying when he sings. A true master!

    Old school rap head from nyc here. My man, keep doing your thing, all your songs are dope. The pain and soul in your songs can be felt even by a hardened city kid. And why aren’t you played on my stupid Sirius country channels. All they play is Kenny Chesney and other pop country that’s corny and has no soul.

      His background is hard core metal. He is a powerful lyricist. I can see why he would resonate with you as a rapper (lyrics/poetry). Lyrics are powerful in any music genre. Music is our common ground.

      I'm an old rocker from the 70s. I hated rap, disco, and country. It's just what we did, we talked about how crappy that music was. I was into Black Sabbath, Ozzy Osbourne, and god help me, Ted Nugent (who put on one of the best shows I've seen). I evolved into loving classic rock but still hated rap and country in a knee-jerk way.
      I've heard enough hip-hop now to know that I don't hate it. I respect the writing, the musicianship, the rapping, the diversity of ideas. It's not my thing and I don't listen often, but much respect. (Especially the origins of rap. On the street with a boombox or just someone mouthing beats. It's raw and there was so much incredible talent. That scene is a rap version of folk. Folk is stripped down also. Like John here with just a guitar and a song.)
      For a long time country was still awful in my mind because I only knew the crap you're talking about on your Sirus country channel. I still hate that stuff. But then, about six months ago, I saw 'Heartworn Highways,' a documentary made in the 70s about a group of country, country-folk, and country-rock musicians and it was a revelation to me. I learned that there is a huge undercurrent of real, gritty, honest country music that speaks to me now.
      Townes Van Zandt, Guy Clark, Steve Earl, Rodney Crowel, Mary Gauthier, Blaze Foley. All these led to more artists and I'm almost all about country now. I still listen to my other stuff, yes, but it's country that's pulling at my heart at this moment.
      Discovering John Moreland is just another wonderful step in learning about this music.
      All of which is to say, even though I'm not from NY, I'm a city boy also, and I'm right there with you. This is the shit. It really is.

      If you rlly think about it… what chords aren’t simple when you’ve reached a certain point playing guitar. It’s more about the progression than anything along with the dynamics. I’m writing my own alt-country album but I can play jazz chords all day. It’s just the genre prefer open chords as do I. It’s all about Whatchu wanna play. Plus he puts a gorgeous melody on top of his progressions.

    I swore the days were over, courting empty dreams
    I worshiped at the altar of losing everything
    And the guard I held together is losing all its shape
    And in my head you look so gorgeous, it’s keeping me awake
    There’s a scar on my soul, so let me down easy
    Break my heart sweetly, like you always do
    I guess I can’t let go til you wreck me completely
    Break my heart sweetly, drape me in blue
    I was never scared of nothing, I thought I had a home
    Life went and broke me open, cause I carried it alone
    I’m finding all this well worn sadness I never knew I kept
    And I still chase you into heartache every time you take a step
    I swore the days were over, courting empty dreams
    I worshiped at the altar of losing everything
    And you had a halo made of diamonds, resting on your head
    I should be dealing with my demons, but I’m dodging them instead

    • @pocketlama
      @pocketlama 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I used to feel exactly the same way. No one else understood or felt the suffering I was feeling. You know what I've discovered? I've recently discovered the radical notion that "people are people." (Radical, I know. /s) That other human being I am talking with has just as many hopes, dreams, fears, shame, and passion as I do, quite likely. They are nuanced, complex, happy, and sad, just like me.
      That was a huge revelation for me. I realized that, although everyone has to suffer largely alone (because no one can carry your pain but you, in the end) there are many people who, if I told them of my suffering (major depression and suicidal for years, and now I'm caring for a wife with dementia) in the right way, would get it and would, if they could articulate it, share their own difficult experiences. Not the same as mine but important nonetheless.
      I realized that, while my suffering is my own, many people want to help, share stories, and understand. I'm feeling far less isolated in the world now. Although I'm so lonely I know there are others out there feeling just as I am. That does actually help me.

      Moreland represents the wave of Americana music that is exploding. While it is easy to compare it to country, it also has deep roots in southern rock and blues. People always ask me what it sounds like and I tell them it is a cross between Willie Nelson, Bob Dylan, and Tom Petty. If you like this, make sure to check out Jason Isbell, Lucero, and Drive-By Truckers just to name a few.

    • @pocketlama
      @pocketlama 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Jeffrey Schnoldt There's a direct line to John Moreland from the music of Townes Van Zandt, Guy Clark, Blaze Foley and others who were starting out in the 70s, bringing a gritty, underground kind of writing and singing to country music. They wrote the truth and weren't afraid to sing it. They made a conscious choice to pursue art rather than fame.
      I hated country (except for Willy, Johnny, and Dolly) when I was younger (I was a 70s rocker/stoner), and disliked it still, up until about six months ago when I discovered those people. I've had so much fun discovering all the more recent people that were so strongly influenced by them.
      If you are willing to take a chance on it, there's a great documentary that was shot in the 70s and released sometime in the 80s, 'Heartworn Highways.' It's got loads of music from those artists and more. It changed the whole course of my musical life. Great stuff.

    I dig his right hand technique. 2 finger picking is a style I haven't seen too much of but it sounds great!

    I'm very grateful for the attention that this video has drawn, and even more grateful to play a part in spreading the word about John Moreland. Usually, it's noticeable when I get a hundred hits, which is why I'm curious as to how you all know about this particular video. Anyone who can fill me in, please do!

      Thanks for letting me know. I first heard about Moreland when the singer/songwriter Rod Picott recommended "In The Throes." If you're not familiar with Rod's work, I recommend checking him out.
