  • Today I ventured out into the Colorado backcountry to find some small streams that are less pressured. I found some fantastic nymph fishing and fish crazy for dry flies. Most of the fish were smaller, in the 8-10 inch size but what they lacked in size they made up for in numbers and eagerness. I used my Orvis Recon 10' rod for both dries and nymphs...for euro nymphing I paired it with my Battenkill 1 reel and for dry flies I just swapped that out for my Orvis Clearwater 5wt reel with floating line. The rod was surprisingly great even when overlined.
    Gear:
Orvis Recon 10' 3 wt (for both nymph and dry)
    Orvis Battenkill 1 reel
    Orvis Clearwater 5 wt reel
    Line/tippet:
Fly line for dries: RIO Elite Gold Floating Weight Forward 5wt
Nymphing - RIO Fluorocarbon 5x to the first fly and 6x to the second
Dries - 4 to 5ft of RIO 5/6x PF+ Tippet from the tippet ring off the leader
    Leaders:
    Dry - 9ft tapered 5x mono knotless
Nymphing - 18-20 ft euro leader with sighter and tags left on the blood knots
Flies: Most we’re tied by a local northern Colorado guy but I’ll look up names of the closest commercially available fly and add them.
Lastly, what I thought about using the Recon 10’ 3 weight for both contact nymphing and then switching to a dry rod with 5 weight reel and floating line. In a nutshell, even though it was overlined, it felt great and any ugly casts were my fault not the equipment.

Are you kidding me!!!??? The slow mo of the fish jumping at 7:00+ is insane! Damn good footage and what a great fun spot. If the fishing doesn't hook you, the watermelon radish will. Great Great Video!

Thanks Michelle! Have to say, it was my favorite part of the best day I’ve ever had on the River. A truly religious experience. I want that to be my fishing Groundhog Day 😂.

@@highholescramblers Amen to that! I'm finally getting to the Poudre this weekend. Taking your words of wisdom with me. Might not be this exact experience, but maybe a few in the net will be okay.

I’m sure you’ll have a great day! Flows are lower so with the warm weather fish are spread out. A lot in the riffles and shallower slower runs. Browns are up tight to the bank but feeding during the day. Move around a bit and switch up your bugs and you’ll find em. :)

This might be your best video yet. Gorgeous footage, loved the stream at the 3:00 mark. Perfect backcountry Colorado stream. And the footage of the fish jumping at 7:10 and grabbing the bugs out of the air is amazing.

Aww thanks Andy!! I guess tell your friends? Haha. Seriously tho, we just do this for fun and the love of this amazing sport. We’d love to post a video a week but we have full time jobs and don’t always get to fish or sometimes just feel like leaving the cameras at home and enjoying what god puts before us. That said, I was really proud of this latest video, I feel like we’re getting better at this whole TH-cam thing every time. And this was probably the best day I’ve ever had on the water and I’m just thankful I got to experience it.

Outstanding video!! What a great day on the water. Great memories. Care to share what your gear was on this trip? Looked like an Orvis Recon rod but interested in line, leaders, flies, etc.
