I'm suspicious that your original method might have worked if you had changed either the source or destination directory name. I saw that it was trying install both from C:\PCDOS7 and to C:\PCDOS7, but when you got the CD-ROM set up, it decided to use a more traditional C:\DOS directory as the target. I imagine if you had originally put files into a generic directory like C:\INST, or had explicitly chosen C:\DOS as the destination, it may have worked. It was still good to be reminded of the process of getting CD-ROMs going on systems like these, though! It's always a bit dizzying to see all the different driver files needed for that to work
Trust me I tried that and more.. Creating a C:\DOS directory on the CF card and then using that as the destination.. The installer talks about two directories, the new one to install into and the old one to either backup or not. I suspect the installer fails because it's trying to copy files to the same physical drive i.e. from C: to C:.. regardless of the directories involved.. When doing D: to C: it ran fine. I even tried booting from Dos 6.22 and upgrade that from a PCDOS7 folder on the same drive, but it failed in the same way. The error I got (Red screens) isn't documented in the manual either. It was fun though trying to figure this out and finally getting it working! There may be some variation available for the same drive, perhaps if one tinkered with the config file for the install, but I didn't go that far..

Glad to hear you had tried that. Yeah, I wish installers like these would be a bit clearer about the errors
