Good segue if he wants to fall into that particular canyon would be to review Carpenters' cover of Carole's It's Going To Take Some Time...Carole King is justly an icon, and happily very much still with us.

There is a story that Karen ran into John Lennon from the Beatles at an LA restaurant and he told her what an amazing voice she had, and she thanked him, but after he left, she told her dining companion can you believe that, he was just being nice, she didn't believe he was sincere. It also tells you something that the Beatles asked the Carpenters to record some of their songs, including Ticket to Ride and Please Mr. Postman.

I like to imagine a sequel to that encounter in the restaurant. Requires that Lennon was "imagining" wrong...Heaven, February 1983. John (there since December 1980) sees Karen arrive and beelines over. With a look of mixed admiration and reproof, he tells her, "Yes I did mean it, dear." Then hands her some drumsticks and they go.off and jam...

The Carpenters were a huge portion of the soundtrack of my childhood (yes, we're white suburban folks from the 70s), always there, always sounding like Gold Medal winners in mellowness. Now, it's easy to see, compared to current singers, why so many people are rediscovering Karen.

I hope you will continue to check out more of The Carpenters' music, as they had several hits. Three of my favorites are "Please Mr. Postman", "Yesterday once more", and "Now" which was Karen's last recording in April 1982. Every time that song starts playing, I instantly get teary eyed. I can't believe we are fast approaching the 41st anniversary of her death on February 4, 1983. What a tremendous loss...

I think backing vocals are unaccredited - you can clearly see in the video other people singing. The guy at the end that is singing is not her brother - her brother plays the keyboard. Either way - beautiful song. Edit: Carole King is another one to hit - one of the GOAT singer/songwriters of the 70s.

You are still young and there once was so many talented artists going back to the fifties when it comes to pop or rock, jazz , jazz, or blues so it is quite normal not to know every single talented and famous artist.Karen with Richard’s production elements made us all feel melancholy or somber after listening to most of The Carpenters music! That whole album by Carole King is a must react to or listen to at least. Carole’s album is called Tapestry and everyone who liked folk or ballads back in the 1970’s, owned that record! The Wrecking Crew were the best studio musicians who ghosted many vocal group albums of the 1960’s and 1970’s. Look them up and your jaw will drop!

  • @helokopter924
    @helokopter924 หลายเดือนก่อน

Good reaction to the best, beutiful singer. I remember Carpenters very well on the radio and TV specials. She began, with her brother Richard, by playing drums. Richard, her brother, was a terrific arranger but KC's 3+ octave voice was discovered by Herb Alpert, A&M Records, in 1969, which began their road to fame. Richard convinced her that her best singing voice was contralto, 'the money is in the basement'. I believe KC's, voice, especially contralto, was the best female voice ever. She sang TO you, not at you. No auto-tune, stripping, gimmicks, or screaming. Did you know every female harmony in all of her songs was hers as well, sang, then dubbed into the song by Richard ? Her nickname was 'one take', since she always sang a song once in studio without a single re-take. She sang to you with mesmerizing emotion, perfect pitch and enunciation. Her voice compelled you to listen. She had no professional voice training. Paul McCartney said she sang Ticket To Ride better than the Beatles, and "she had the most angelic voice I have ever heard". John Lennon told her at an LA restaurant "you have a fabulous voice luv". They were most successful in early/mid1970s when she/they received 3 grammys. She was also recognized by 1975 Playboy poll as rock drummer of the year. Check other songs such as 'Solitaire', 'Only Yesterday', 'Hideaway', 'Rainy Days and Mondays,' 'Yesterday Once More', 'This Masquerade', 'I Can Dream Cant I'(a big band era song), 'Hurting Each Other', 'Need To Be In Love', 'Goodbye To Love', etc.. She had a few friends including Petula Clark, Olivia Newton John and Dionne Warwick. She had anorexia with a serious onset in 1975 that continued the rest of her life. Never knew true love. She died Feb 1983 at 32yo due to complications from anorexia. [Some info contained herein came from documentaries such as, "Only Yesterday"]. (Apology if sent this to you before on a previous KC song) 😊

Your journey down the rabbit hole is progressing beautifully. I don’t remember if you said Karen was on drums here but mentioned Hal. This was a full lip sync performance. Karen is that good at it. She was probably singing and drumming in full voice but this was the album track. I’d be surprised if grandma didn’t have some Carpenters albums in with all that vinyl. I’m so enjoying what you do. I was 14 when I started my journey with them in 1970. So all the way minus the first album. Karen soothed this teenage boy back then.
That all said, I checked. I said and linked what I want you to see back under your reaction to “We’ve Only Just Begun.” So I won’t copy and paste but instead send you there to read and link. I have 10 checks but no heart so, it’s visible but you haven’t seen it. I think it’s an important lesson by a young singer to see how they did it all the way back then. And my song recommendation for a near future choice. I’m jbs256 Joe, so you’ll see my post. It’s relatively long but hidden until you click on the more. Keep it up, you’re making this old guy joyful.
What I will do, because of this song is tell you more about the 18 year old young woman I linked her demo for you. She’s 20 now and last year released her Short cover of Rainy Days.and Mondays. It drew a comment on eye-geee from a user named paulielama2. He said of her rendition “beautiful, soulful, effortless … and felt, not performed. You are remarkable. Gifted. Thank you!!! Absolutely love your voice.”
Now here’s your goosebumps moment. She replied to paulielama2 “this means so much more than you know, Mr. Williams. Thank you…”
When the man who cowrote the song says that about your performance what more can I tell you. Paul said it all.
So when you go watch her demo, and maybe react to The Medley I linked. You will have learned a whole lot more on this magical journey.
    My best to you,
    Joe

This is one of my favorite songs. By the way if an act is the first to record a song, even if they didn't write it, it's not a cover. It's interesting to find out the Wrecking Crew were the instrumentalists. They're responsible for a surprising amount of the backing music for many legendary albums. You ought to do a research and react to them. Would it surprise you that the counterculture influenced critics of the day dismissed the Carpenters as being too soft rock? Yet they're still being listened to and rediscovered.

Karen Carpenter has perfect pitch. It was my understanding that she can do a song in one take. I don’t believe she and her brother had written any of the songs. Richard arranged the songs for her the studio recordings, she and Richard are singing, backing vocals on all of the songs. Richard does sing lead on a few songs. Because they have the same genetics siblings always sound good when doing harmonies. The Osmond brothers, the Jackson 5 and the brothers Gib better known as the Bee Gees

When Karen and Richard recorded different background vocal tracks they would vary some of them slightly to give it more richness. Also, when they performed on stage some of the band members would do some background vocals.

For All We Know is my favorite song by them, my only complaint is it's too short, LOL!

You are correct...they did mutitracking of their vocals. They were inspired on how Les Paul used to do with Mary Ford. If you want to hear beginnings of mutitracks listen to the paul/ford version of how high the moon. (Then listen to the Pat Sazuki version for something more haunting)

I think this song kind of intensified for me after Karen’s death in 1983. It added an extra layer of sadness to it for me. Still a hauntingly beautiful song.

"The Wrecking Crew" was a name given to a loose association of California session players. They were in high demand in the 50s, 60s and 70s as they were very polished musical performers. They were on tons of hit records. There is an excellent documentary on them called The Wrecking Crew you can watch. Most are long gone now.

You are a savant in music I can tell especially how you recieve Miss Karen Carpenters voice. But your right some how Mr Richard Carpenter her brother blended the background vocals on multiple tracks. I am not a musician at all, you would probably know how its done. He got the idea from big band groups of the 1940's, how they blended and performed with multiples of the same instruments together, like 2 or 3 saxaphones together, or 2 or 3 trumphets together, so forth and so on, while playing a song. He just did it with voices on tracks in the 1970's. Again I am not a musician, I just love the sound of The Carpenters, since 1970, and Miss Karen Carpenter velvet voice just sends me to the moon. She brings the song to you the listener and gives it life. Just likea motion picture, she is actually living the song, and you the audience is witnessing it first hand with your ears. Dig deeper in their documentries and you will find out details of this majestic group that their music shall last forever. Thanks for enjoying this part of musical genius. I think they call it dub or dubing voices record your singing voice while playing it you can double it multiply by four or eight etc etc I think they call it stacked vocals devised by a country dual named Les Paul and Mary Ford in 1951 he did it by switching on his guitar called over dubbing. Whatever that means????

This is so fantastic. Please consider ...
It's a compilation of their own stuff and covers. Doesn't do whole songs. Just little snippets but it's just amazing and it includes that really long drum one that you see where she plays many different sets. Really worth it

Karen and Richard really perfected the "sound wall". Such a loss to the world of music when Karen died. Enya shirts the sound wall thing. One voice.

There was a Country Western couple in the 50’s that that were masters of the over dubbed. Richard copied their techniques going 8+tracks deep.
