DISCLAIMERS ON FORMATS COVERED:
Notice I said POPULAR formats, meaning a format where there is a significant amount of people who compete in it for tournaments and so on and so forth.
For the record, I do not care what rules or formats people play their battles by nor am I saying these formats are the only formats that should be played. The way you play Pokemon is between you and your opponent. I just like examining popular tournament formats.

Wow, I never thought about how Shifty was the "Sun Team" MVP counterpart to Ludicolo being a "Rain Team" MVP
ludicolo is better though because water is usually weak to grass but not ludicolo. Plus ludicolo has rain dish and combined with rain dance and water attacks he can be quite a threat. And Ludicolo worked equally as good on sun teams because he has sunny day, synthesis and those combined with grass attacks makes ludicolo quite a good pokemon. He's my go to grass pokemon the majority of the time. Also nothing quite as annoying as being leech seeded or giga drain
@@GrowingDownUnder ludicolo has swift swim is what makes him good.
Hence its being in the version with groudon, while ludicolo's in the version with kyogre.
@@knightarcane4920 I think ludicolo's best feature is his typings....grass/water isn't very easy to beat well i'm sure you can find a way to beat it but ludicolo is resilient as well especially with rain dish which allows him to heal when rain dance is active plus synthesis ability to heal and even if you had leftovers item it would allow him to basically recover almost full health fairly quickly this is good when combined with like substitute or something which is going to stop direct attacks from hitting for a few turns.

I mean, when your team is a Level 67 Blaziken and a few level 5 - HM slaves of course it won't be annoying

Can we talk about the beauty that is gen 5 Nature Power? Converting to Earthquake was honestly a really cool way of giving a lot of Grass-types some extra coverage.
And then they gitted it later, who wants Tri Attack?
@@marcstutsman4861 Porygon
@@marcstutsman4861 In Gen 6, I can honestly agree it got super gutted. The only notable user that immediately comes to mind for XY/ORAS is Aurorus. It's been a while though since I've played the Gen 6 metas, so I forget if it ever got Hyper Voice later on, but I do remember in XY that Nature Power was the play for a while.
Refrigerate Hyper Beam was funny too
@@Torpadorp it got hyper voice via ORAS tutors, but by then, it was mainly running snow warming iirc. Refrigerate was definitely still good though.
@@Torpadorp personally I liked that in gen 6 they made it always turn to a special move. Having it potentially physical or special depending on terrain always left it with a chance to be rubbish for a given Pokemon.

I know it was a typo, but gas knot sounds like an awesome name for a poison type move.

@@theraginginfernape9496 well yes but actually no.
Infernape is the goat
Lol
The fact that it was (and still might be) able to carve out niches in the the highest tier is a testament that tenacity means just as much as power
Parasect had a niche in gen 4 ubers so yeah you're right
only move not discussed on here that is a great tool of shiftry's for poison types especially toxicroak is extrasensory which while 80 power can flinch and gives psychic coverage to a pokemon with already great type coverage. Honestly the only move I want on shiftry now is acrobatics as I feel it would give more reliable flying type coverage which would help more for its huge bug weakness, fighting weakness and even helps take on grass types alongside heat wave. Otherwise i love how shiftry's stats are :)
Can you use some punctuation?
Shifty has that 4 Moveslot Syndrome problem. There's a lot of moves it wishes it can run but sadly can't run them all.
HP Fire and Heat Wave can both dent Toxicroak since it normally runs dry skin
It has rockslide for flying cover
Oof ignore that I misread
shiftry already has hurricane, it was excellent as a Z-move
"Those who played Ruby, Sapphire and Emerald will remember Sydney's Shiftry with great irritation"

Lmao every video I see is Sydney's team getting annihilated by every team.
Lol
Dark being a mediocre defensive type? Probably
Sydney is weak trash
@@GM.Nobody nope grass is a terrible deffensive type (the best grass are in ou and there rillaboom and ferrethorn)
Shiftry is a lot better than I thought. I was so sure that his typing was going to ruin him.
As long as Heracross is no where near, Shiftry is decent.
Wait until Cacnea's evolved form. That will be a surprise
By the end of the day typing is what matters the least. Bisharp was always good while eeleekross and spiritomb were kinda bad despite no weaknesses
If you can hit hard and fast enough, you have a place in competitive Pokemon. It doesn’t really matter how good or bad your typing is defensively so long as you got that.
@@Drakorre Well Spiritomb had no weakness until Gen 6

Exeggutor: First time?
Rock slide/rock tomb since gen 3, Aireal ace in gen 3 as well and now heat wave and air slash make bug hardly an issue for shiftry. I only wish he got heat wave sooner as it makes so much sense for him to have had it from the start but glad gen 8 helped him ❤️👍

Shiftry needs a buff badly. The idea of a tengu Pokémon is an awesome one, yet he sucks. I would say give him a mega, but Gamefreak decided to get rid of that
I think it'd do well with just a 10-20 BST boost
Getting rid of megas and Z-moves did help it though... Lol. Considering it's moved up in tiers and managed to get itself banned in one, it's gotten quite a decent buff. Getting good coverage moves like Heat Wave and Solar Blade has also helped out. Maybe giving it a +10 boost to it's attack stat would be fine. "Give him a mega" yeah that could be said for like every pokemon lol.
@@mr.zahsome7254 I think it's ATK and speed are good enough, especially when on sun teams. I think what it needs especially is some good bulk. Maybe +10 or +15 to both its Defs could help, or maybe to its HP
Shiftry is not that bad its just outclassed. It really needs stat buffs mostly on attack so it could be 110 or 120
@@honeyham6788 +10 to it’s defenses could do wonders. With several Pokémon coming back, I doubt it will stay in BL for long
I know this isn’t related to shiftry but why can the machop line learn flamethrower and fire blast? It makes absolutely no sense. I guess it’s just gen 1 weirdness. Also I had wondered for the longest time why sneasel and weavile can learn surf, but then I found out the the animal that their based off of (weasels) are extremely good swimmers.
Maybe he has bad breath.
Because Gen 1 is a beautiful gen. Just like Tauros being able to learn Fire Blast, Blizzard, and Thunder.

I thought this guy would end up in the unranked placement. Cool that it was actually good.
It did in Gen 5 if you listen closely in the video
@@agentblackbird9435 that was due to its usage stats, not its strength.
I love cool, unique Pokemon like this that aren't top tier beasts but have interesting little niches that make them truly stand out.
Meanwhile in Pokemon Go:
Shiftry is a solidly strong pokeon in the Go Battle League, since its moveset is one of the best ones for any spamming pokemon. It gets STAB to both Foul Play and Leaf Blade, each of those moves being very low energy cost and decently efficient in terms of damage. Additionally, it has a place in the meta for both the Great League and the Ultra League, since its Grass typing and Leaf Blade allow it to threaten the strongest Great League pokemon, Azumarill, while also still having solid neutral matchups against the Galarian Stunfisk and Skarmory that usually can support the godly Azu. In the Ultra League, the ever-present Giratina has to be worried about Shiftry's Dark typing and Foul Play spam.
UNFORTUNATELY, Shiftry is held back by its higher Attack stat and lower Defense and HP stats, which make it far too squishy to be safe. Even though it beats Azumarill in an even matchup, it almost always needs to have an energy or shield advantage to actually beat it safely. Azu can win if it lands an Ice Beam or Play Rough otherwise. And that's just Azu--several other very common pokemon that can still be chipped by Shiiftry still beat it, and if the Shiftry is ever at a disadvantage then it falls far too easily.
Still, Shiftry is a completely viable and versatile pokemon, and with its amazing moves and solid typing it remains meta-relevant and versatile, despite the fact that it is a bit higher maintenance than other pokemon.

Fun fact in gen 5 shiftry has a role in Uber’s
I played with a mono-Dark Sun team once, making use of Pokémon such as Shiftry, Mega Houndoom, and Sableye with Prankster Moonlight. It was a fun and silly gimmick that puts a smile on my face with the fact that it exists.
One of my favorites! I made a Shiftry costume for Acen years ago and it was fun to participate in group pictures (especially ones based on type, since Shiftry is grass/dark!)
Gas Knot was a brutally powerful move

Yo I'd just like to say that Shiftry does have a niche in Gen 3 OU. After some testing, this specific set does a lot of work against crucial pokemon like celebi, Swampert, Alakazam, Gengar, non ice beam milotic and suicune, banded Ttar, etc.
Shiftry @ Black Glasses/Miracle Seed
Ability: Early Bird/Chlorophyll
EVs: 76 HP / 252 SpA / 180 Spe
Modest Nature
IVs: 3 Atk
- Giga Drain/Hidden Power [Grass]
- Hidden Power [Dark]/Feint Attack
- Rest/Hidden power [Fire]
- Sleep Talk/Extrasensory
I've listed more then one set that could potentially work based upon what you want to accomplish with Shiftry, but the first set is what is most optimal at getting 2HKOs on crucial mons and still giga draining waters and swampert for high amounts of damage. Rest seems unconventional, but if timed right with early bird will award you all of your health back in two turns.
Just some fruit for thought, I used it with team support in Gen 3 OU for quite a while and it did it's job pretty effectively at removing those threats from the game, especially with hazard stacking, as I would argue some matchups become 100% winnable once spikes are on the field.
I love the move Gass Knott. 💨❤
So, much like Ludicolo, Shiftry, in summation, was weird. While nominally a low to bottom tier Pokemon, it still had its uses in serious competitive play, but while Ludicolo thrived in the rain, Shiftry thrived in the sun.
And they were game exclusives! The Ludicolo line being in Sapphire only and Shiftry's line being in Ruby only (until Emerald).
Ludiloco is way better tho.
@@cintronproductions9430
This is mostly because Shiftry embodies the worst part of gen 3 pokemon design (Slow, frail mixed attacker with no movepool), while Ludicolo embodies the best (balanced tank with great support moves).
Also because Grass/Dark is horrible, while Grass/Water is fantastic.
And then it got wind rider
Im still waiting for the video on the Rotom formes. Will there be 1 hour long video? Or 6 separate vids?

After watching this series of videos for a while and having been a pokemon fan for years I do wonder how much things would change if pokemon could have even 1 or maybe 2 more moves. I know some pokemon wouldn't be heavily affected by it but there are some where it is like in this video where that extra slot or two would ramp some pokemon way up there just because of that extra coverage or utility that they normally have to leave behind.
