It's really good but Tanto and Wakizashi are not the same, totally not. Wakizashi are actually much more like Kodachi (Between 30cm and 60cm) as for Tanto, they're like knife. (Less than 30 cm)
Buen trabajo si, pero sería excelente si se corrigen ciertos detallitos personales, del taller y del proceso de fabricación; es decir ciertos detallitos que tienen que ver con el orden, el aseo y el método...///.Colombia/28/octubre/2020.
if that is really M2 (1.3343) steel then it's not as easy to harden and temper as a simpler carbon steel. I'd be surprised if you got a result that resembles the full capabilities of the steel. May I ask why you chose this over a normal oil hardening steel?
The metal supplier didn't have any thin material left in his stock. I don't want to use 8mm stock. So I choose this, way too harder to work with, and I think it's still quite hard being a air harden material and I don't want it full hardness because in that way it became brittle also. Even after 3 tempering Cycles at 250° it always felt alot more harder than my regular knife blades. So I think it's good. Thanks for being here:)
Thanks, because I m making a Saya for a tanto I forged and I found your idear great, might do the same! Was also wondering, I saw you air cooled the edge and the spine stays soft, did you try etching the blade to see if you had a temper line? I m never air cooled steel so I dunno if you can get a hamon like that
Buddy I do the air quench because it was high speed steel and very costly. I don't want to take a risk of bending it or cracking it during the quench. I found that even after heating it and placing it in the air even then this material gets hard. I etched the blade but the transition I found is on the very top near the spine area which is also found to be soft during the file test. So there was no meaning to show it. That's why I leave it clean. But I think that you can definitely able to get Hamon if you only able to heat the edge only. Knives usually not made with high speed steel, I hope your material is different than mine. Good luck for your knife 👍
Hum I see, how ever you knife looks great even without the temper line 😉 well actually at the moment I m using old files to forge, I test the carbon rate by breaking at doing the sparkle test. Took a little testing to get the heat treat right but I got a rather good hamon on this one in oil so I m rather happy with it, only I m not very good at working with wood and have very little material so the Saya is rather a challenge at the moment. Thanks for your time and have fun forging nice blades. Cheers
Buddy you can try on a shop which supplies drill bits and cutting tools like end mills etc. Those supplier usually have high speed steel stock for lathe parting tools. Usually flat stock of such width is quite difficult to get but I hope you get it there. Extremely hard material to work but Good luck.
Thanks buddy, well I got I from local tool steel dealer, but you can got its from shops who sells material like drill bits and lathe tools. Often use as parting tool. I never found any website selling these stuff. If you are working with only hand tools then I recommend to go with regular tool steel. HSS is very tough to work on. Hopefully you found it. Good luck.
This is an amazing build. I have a damasks blade queued up for my next project. I just learned so much from this build. The only thing I question is whether the pin should be metal or bamboo. I know the traditional pin for a katana is bamboo. Is it different for a Tanto? No matter either way, more a curiosity than a complaint :) Thank you for posting such a detailed build. I'm glad I found this site.
Thanks pal for the words, I truly appreciate. The pin is actually a mosaic pin like you use in normal knife handles for the decorative purposes. That's what it is, good luck for your build buddy:)
It cost around 8000₹ but knife is not made with high speed steel. It's extremely difficult to work with and risky during heat treatment. If you want High speed steel then its around 11000₹. INR.
Yeah buddy it's not easily available, I didn't knew any shop in Singapore but you can try those shops who sell cutter and bits for lathe and other machines, they have this material available in small portion but you can go with d2 or d3 steel. They have carbon around 1.5 to 2.10 % and also air Hardened material. HSS not good for forging it starts to crack much faster than the regular carbon steel. So go wisely.
Nice! I thought I was going to hate it because it looked like you were doing that American Tanto (with that stupid blade tip) BUT... you didn't! 👍👍 Very nice. I can honestly say you are the best knife maker in the world that wears Crocks. Wish I had your skills. Take care, -Eric
Great job brother! I went through a lot of knife making videos before getting to yours. I really liked the way you made your knife the process was quite different from others. Gave me a chance to learn a lot of new things. I have a question, what could have been done in order to give the knife its original wooden texture finish. I tried lacquer aerosol spray paint on my wooden knife but the finishing was not what I expected. I think you may have an answer to my problem.
Thanks dear, first thing is that you can't use any wood for handle if you are willing to make a more presentable. Tried to choose burl wood which is the densest part of any wood( you can find root portion of the trees, I found them on coal supplier who also sells these roots as a fuel). There are many wood species in India which are very dense. Try to do the sending work as much as you can. I usually go upto 1000 grit, if you go upto that then just dip it into linseed oil. That gives you the best finish on your handle and also stabilize it. You can also go with CA glue finish ( super glue normally called). Do it after 600grit, but this is a repeated process. I mean you have to do it multiple times before the buffing process. After the 1000 grit, buff it. Try do the buffing at slow rpm. This is a time consuming process but gives nicest finish.
@@ambroscustom brother I didn't have so many tools available with me. Also I made my tantō knife during the first week of the lockdown from available wooden planks at my home. I only had an angle grinder, 3 different grade sanding papers and a sharp IKEA knife. I just pulled off my knife with the help of these tools. Since everything is closed can't get new tools. But will try linseed oil ! I have seen it giving a nice tone to the wood and bringing out the natural pattern in it. I have started on another project learning from the mistakes I did during the first attempt. I hope to do a better job this time. Thanks for the replying! I learned something new Today.
