Knife Making - Japanese Tanto Style unokubi Knife / 包丁作り-たんとうのうのこび包丁

  • This tanto knife is a slightly modified version of unokubi. The whole build is hand made except drilling the hole. Definitely not nice like what Japanese makes but a little bit similar to that. Japanese blade smiting is definitely one of the difficult tasks I have ever done. You need a lot of patience in your work. The blade material is EN31High carbon content tool Steel. I want to do the Hamon line but get only a small fraction at the bottom and little bit over the fuller area which I really didn't like. I want that wavy pattern of Hamon but this is my learning journey and very pleased with the outcome. I personally think that I did better than my last wakizashi build, rest I leave up to you because you are the judge. The saya is made with African wenge wood, extremely hard and dense wood and with lack of tools I definitely felt a lot of problems but with the final tight fit, I get that is much satisfying for me. The tsuba guard plan is to do an inlay work but I am very bad in engraving and unable to achieve that result and abandoned that plan. The brass guard is little heavy so to remove a little bit of weight I made some barley plants and leaves and that looks good to me.
    Definitely suggest the knife you wanted to see in the next build and I am going to make a giveaway of that knife.

    Truly spectacular!
    About your hamon; you should use a thinner slurry and build it up in layers beginning at the spine and working your way down the bevel but not entirely to the edge. The idea is to protect all BUT the edge and your's had a great deal of material on it's edge, thus, your hamon wasn't as dramatic as it could've been.
    That being said; don't forget that most hamon don't "pop" until the final buffing of the edge.

    Wonderful to see a smith forging a beautiful blade without a hydraulic press or hydraulic hammer, just as I wish to do as a hobby, very soon. So happy I came across your channel friend and defiantly liking what I've seen and subscribing, with blades made like they were always made. If the Hamon doesn't show next time, design using nail polish and when dry, etch the blade in fluoric acid. Thank you from N.W Wales GBR👏👏

    Take the forge scale off of the blade with a stone or a solution before you file. Your tools will stay sharper.
    Forge your habaki before you make the hamon.

    If you use a water hardening [shallow hardening steel like the 10xx series or W-1, W-2] steel and quench in Water, you will get a nice hamon. Using tool steel, or something like 5160 or other deep hardening steels, you can only quench in oil or it will most likely crack as water is way too fast a quench for these steels. You could go for a straight "temper line" or "differential quench" by edge quenching similar to what you did here.

    • @ambroscustom
      @ambroscustom  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the nice tip Mr. David. I tried in the past of full quench in the water and break the knife, so always afraid of doing that, but definitely going to try this shallow hardening technique.

    The Tanto always looks good as a shirasaya, with the Tsuba it looks awkward, remove the Tsuba and it will look really good, the tanto is a close in support weapon that is pretty nasty if on the recieving end, also most samurai ladies were armed with a Tanto for self protection of for saving her honor, now thats not to say some didnt have a Tsuba but they wre tiny in size..

      @sandervanduren2779 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      What would you have preferred him to use for his steel? You realize that blacksmiths in the old days generally weren’t iron smelters themselves, so they were buying steel too right? Do you think a blacksmith 500 years ago wouldn’t use modern steel if he had access to it?

      dd nn I am fully aware that in history, they used Tamahagane, and in today’s world, traditional swordsmiths still use it for tradition purposes. That being said, the only reason to make your own steel for a blade is for tradition, or just “to say you did”. Steel made in this way is inferior to modern steel in just about every metric.

    • @ddnn1142
      @ddnn1142 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@sandervanduren2779 We are talking about the blacksmithing art here.
      You are basically saying a cnc machine give better results than Michelangelo.
      And a single layered blade is stronger than 1000`s layered katana with soft steel inside wrapped with hard steel outside?
      I dont think so.

    • @sandervanduren2779
      @sandervanduren2779 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      dd nn yes actually, a modern steel blade is stronger than a folded steel katana. The steel was only folded to homogenize impurities to make the best steel possible with primitive technology. Modern steel doesn’t need to be folded , since we have technology and processes to remove the impurities entirely, instead of just limiting their potential for harm by folding. It doesn’t matter if you don’t think modern steel is as good as folded and forge welded tamahagane, the empirical data says a different story. You might like the idea of a blade being made from iron sand much better than a blade made in computer controlled smelters, but that doesn’t make the final product better than a blade made with modern materials. That being said, the people that made blades in the old days, were also not the same people who smelted the steel, just as now, so if you forge a blade from a bar of modern steel, you are preserving just as much of the “blacksmithing art” as the average bladesmith 500+ years ago. People specialized their trades back in those days just as they do now, the smelters made steel and sold it to smiths who made blades and other items from them, just as now.

    As a bladesmith who started from basic tools and hand files I take my hat off to you for your skill with a file, it takes forever to get it done that way so props to you. The dimensions of the blade are a bit off but non the less you made a fine tanto sir.

    For the hamon, less clay is more. Try a very thin (1-2 mm) layer next time. Obviously you have to have the right kind of steel as well. great work!

    The only thing I can point at that I am not satisfied is that butterfly and that you didn't use smaller grain for grinding and polishing. The butterfly itself is great, shape wise but the way it is so uneven in depth grinds my gears. You can try to fill it up with soft metal like copper or something.
    after edit: I meant, dragonfly and not butterfly. As english is not my native language I tend to make this mistakes.

      Thanks for the feedback brother. I definitely pay much more attention to those fine details in my upcoming builds:). I didn't have those japanese polishing stones so have to stuck with the paper abrasive.
