Always loved how some people KEEP the pitting. It gives the blade, axe, hell even a hammer character.
Fantastic work
What’s pitting?
@@Tidepod_Prince its where the rust has eaten away at the metal. When you take off the rust, by either using a wire brush wheel, or using a solution and Electrolysis. A lot of blade makers, and people in general grind this away because some either dont like the look is gives or they want a clean metal look.
I believe it gives character to knives or daggers. Swords are a grey area for me on this.

One thing I may suggest: Your stone holder is rocking, therefore the angle you are sharpening at is changing. Putting a silicone mat underneath may help.
Jesus christ it doesn't have to be perfect in every aspect. It's perfect the way it is.
@@someting9205 it’s a suggestion
This is a 99 out of 100 kind of work. If you'd just used two pins for the handle then it woul've been a 100/100.
tbh I'm assuming tanto are made in the same way katana are with this but, a katana could have one pin, many of them did. I'm more concerned that the tang doesn't go all the way through the handle. Again I don't know if that's a tanto thing or not.
example: www.house-of-katanas.eu/katana-information/the-parts-of-the-katana/#jp-carousel-273
Traditionally katana had one mekugi peg in the tsuba. If the fit was as it should be, poses to threat.

The tanto blade looks a bit thick like a 1/4” thick. You could forge it down a bit to 3/16” thick then texture the blade by using a ball peen hammer and possibly add a hamon line just like a traditional tanto blade by using clay paste on the blade then quenching it to give that wavy pattern on the blade. But overall your tanto looks great! Nice work! Keep it up👍

great project but just curious why you didn't do a traditional removable handle with a taper pin? it wouldn't have been much work beyond what was already done. I did one a few years ago and ended up being very satisfying to be able to fully disassemble

Do you believe anyone, provides the determination, research, materials and tools can become a expert blacksmith?
It doesnt take much to make a tanto like this one, anyone can learn how to do this.
Making an authentic tanto is another matter. This is no doubt looks like a tanto and functions like one, but it isnt one, as the techniques involved in making it are completely alien- More modern, western and production-efficient.
hell yeah
@@DarkestVampire92 For all intents and purposes, it is a tanto, but if you wish to be particular, I'll call it a tanto style knife.
While it may look the same as a classical tanto, I am aware of the differences in metal quality and how the hardness will differ greatly between a classical tanto and more modern inceptions, so I accept it for what it is. A lovely tool that serves a purpose :)
As long as you have the determinations and willpower to get through the hard times
Absolutely! The most important thing is having the money to have the ability to make this possible. Look at the thousands upon thousands of dollars in machines and tools he needs to complete this project. With determination, research, and a wealthy family anything is possible!

Hate to say it but the blade shape ain’t technically a tanto, to nor even a Japanese tanto. This is much more akin to a massive kwaiken
Technically it’s a small wakizashi or maybe massive kwaiken but it’s just missing the The jabbing part where they would jab into there attackers armor
Lizard Discovery, thanks for stepping in, a small wakizashi is exactly right
Springmaker 26yrs one of the most under rated steels 🤔
make punches dies and tools that last for ages even weld a springsteel to mild steel handle .
Although this is beautiful, blade is a bit thick. Probably heavy. Tanto is supposed to be light.
I agree, yet, tanto are not really meant for combat as much for seppukku or just for the sake of carrying a blade. My point is that you would barely notice it
No he's right. It needs to be about half that thickness. Don't get me wrong it's cool and all, just do it right.
Pretty much what I was thinking. I like the fittings and the blade curves and such, but the blade geometry is wrong in that it has no distal taper (Japanese blades are heavily tapered, no exceptions), it has a secondary bevel, which traditional blades don't have, and it's T H I C C. A thick blade is not bad in and of itself, I mean, hell yeah, cut all the way you want, but should've picked a thinner material to begin with and given it a bit of a taper since he forged it anyway. Cool video tho!
Although I 100% agree they're traditionally meant to be much lighter, it's still nice to see a different and artistic look on it :)
@@matiasdelatorreoverton3612 ahh yes, the commonly practiced art of seppukku. Without a doubt what this was made for
Imagine how they used to make it without all these tools
They still do in Japan that's why there swords are better than ours
@@anthonykinzy5878 no, that’s just years of experience and expertise. And the fact that some Japanese smiths decide to dedicate their life to the trade.
The purpose of tools is to make the job easier. They do not degrade quality whatsoever. Easier does not equate to crappier.
@@anthonykinzy5878 Define the metric that objectively makes "there" swords better. I'll still be here when you can't.
@@anthonykinzy5878 not really, try to kill a armoured soldier whit chainmail and plate and im pretty sure a Katana isnt effective. Know why? Katanas are designed cuz the armours there where from wood, so dont neee to be heavy, need to be fast and sharp. But btw better wepons dosnt exist, why a katana is better than a arming sword? I mean every wep is designed for one or more kinds of wepons and armours, like, a Rapier is better than most swords for 1vs1 whitout armour (also is a myth that the estocs and rapiers are that fast) but when it comes to armour is complex, for example, a armour is a counter for most swords but is not that good against maces or pole axes
