In case anyone is wondering, a regular plastic tip Black & Mild cigar fits perfect in the orange hose. Cut off 2 inch section of the orange hose, stick it in the pump, then stick the cigar in the orange hose section
This is a great smoke machine! My 2000 Ford Ranger snorkel coming from the air box/filter(downstream of the MAF sensor) measures 3 1/4” inside diameter. I found that a foam beverage cooler presses in there nice and snug for a plug and already has a hole in the bottom to accept the smoker hose. Thank you!
This needs to be the number one video for finding vacuum leaks. I’ve been having trouble with a rough running engine for so long and I’ve done everything from changing spark plugs and wires and taking it into a mechanic for diagnostics and it turns out with this little trick I have a huge vacuum leak out of my air intake. Thank you so much
I consider myself a TH-cam mechanic, thanks to all these guys willing to share their ideas and knowledge, i have opened my own repair shop, thank u all!
I've seen about 10 of these so far, and this is the best one! Also can get a latex glove and put that over the throttle and then cut the finger off and then put the finger over the hose and then either tape pit or zip tie.
Dude you're a freaking genius. I used this today to find not one but TWO EVAP leaks on my Jeep JKU. Only cost me 4 dollars for the cigars since I already had the pump. YOU ARE THE MAN!!!
This is the best idea ever. I did this and found the leak in 2 mins. I connected the line into the pcv valve line on my Chrysler Sebring and found the leak on the egr line. Thanks bro.
You, Sir, hold the distinction of having invented the most illustrious vacuum leak detection device ever known to shade tree mechanics worldwide. I salute your genius! Cheap, readily available and easy, it amazingly checks all the boxes. And as far as I can tell, cars are immune to lung cancer last time I checked. I can now convincingly tell my spouse that the Cohiba panatelas are not for me but for her car. Thank you.
Thank you !Thank you ! Thank You! Save a whole mess of time and not to mention the money. Everything you used I had already in my tool box and garage . Found my leak . Happy to say mission accomplished.. 🤘🏻
Awesome, can't thank any more! Cheap, easy and effective. With this video and some helpful comments, I eventually find a vacuum leak (from egr valve) that has been frustrating me for long. My 2cents input: 1) no need to go buy cigar, can make ur own with tea. Be sure to wrap tea bag paper in the end to avoid suck into the pump. 2) it might be hard to find exactly fit pvc cap and nipple in Homedepot. Just connect to anywhere else like brake boost line, and plug the intake air hose with a clean towel.
I have not tried this yet and hope it works for my 2010 camaro v6 BUT EVEN if it doesn't...THIS is a GREAT straight to the point and SIMPLE how to video!!!! Too many people are trying to become TuneStars and waist valuable minutes of your life with EXTRA UNNEEDED info ...BUT I digress. GREAT video my friend! : )
Bad ass video! With the cost of the pump, pcv valve elbow, and the cigar was under $11. Took me about 30 pumps to find my leak that was causing bank 1 and 2 lean codes. I owe you a beer for sure!
🤯🤯🤯🤯 I’m just speechless. All I need is the cap and nipple. My p0171 has been plaguing me for weeks. I hope that this helps me find a possible leak. Intake manifold gasket has been changed. So it might be a hose. Thank you !!!!
I used exactly this setup after watching the video, took 2 cigars to fill the whole intake, intercooler etc on my 944 turbo but the smoke got where it was supposed to go. getting it through the turbo was no problem. 3D printed an adapter to connect pump hose to J-boot.
Great idea. I don't like the taste of cigars, since I don't smoke. I found a completely hidden crack in one of my rubber hoses that I would have never found thru normal visual inspection. Now I'm going to use this technique to find why the cheap briggs and stratton plastic carburetors are sucking air, and where it's leaking in. If your carburetor sucks air, it won't keep running after the initial start from priming, so this technique is useful for more than just your car.
Crazy thing is I have this pump and I have cigars so I literally had everything on hand, went out to try it on my jaguar xtype and found the leak within the first 2 minutes of pumping, thank you!
I wish I had seen this months ago....can’t believe I let my truck sitting for so long due to frustrations of finding this leak. And thx for your extra tidbits and rationale e.g explaining why you place the piece precisely where you did, ways to get more smoke in manifold. Also, I was going to use an inscents cone , but I was worried that it would melt the plastic. The cigar is much better idea as there will be no contact between the plastic and the burning tobacco. My only concern would be a car that is gas fumey. Someone told me that fumes are ignitable. I guess all you’d have to do is light the cigar far away from engine in that case.
Just a correction. Some leaks, particularly on booat pipes might not show without adding peessure to the system. I get many customers with tears which will be blocked until the pipe is pressurised and opens it up.
Good video. Actually more of an excellent video. Been chasing rough idle in my 'Taco for a long time. I suspect a cracked Plenum assembly that was replaced by the dealer. We will see. Thanks!
Going to try this on my C300 it has two lean codes. this cheap method will help me tack it down and see if I have any leaks and if not oh well it doesn’t hurt .. will give updates🧐👍. No leaks just had wet fuel injectors from a detail
Thanks great idea it really works I covered the throttle body with a towel and connected the pump to my break release hose I found 2 leaks in my intake manifold
Wish I found this video a year ago. Been riding around with a bank one vacuum leak code since. Hopefully I can find what's needed to move this up with all your Corona vs going on.
Amazing. When you're done you can also the cigar for a job well done 😄. I plan on trying this as well although I'm going to use an air compressor fitting so I don't have to keep pumping up the pump.
Just another tip...I used one of those plastic pumps that come with an exercise ball. Insert a lit cigarette into the inlet port, remover the shader-valve “T” connection and place the outlet tip of the pump into the vaccum line. Gently pump whilst watching that your cigarette doesn’t burn down. I find this method works best with 2 people. One to operate the pump and one to look for leaks. 😉 Hope this helps anyone on a budget. P.S., You may have to gently crease the cigarette filter to fit it into the pumps’ intake port. (*** I am not responsible should your vehicle develop a nicotine habit! ***) 😉
edredas LMAO! Yeah, just realized I made a typo. Meant to type Shrader-valve.. But just had to trace down a P0445 leak on an ‘04 Nissan Xterra....pain in the tailpipe! But with a little ingenuity, I came up with this tip seeing as how I had no smoke machine. Found YOUR video right after I found my leak! LOL
Awesome tip! Ive got a drive by wire TBI, so I guess that I would need to turn the key to the on position and then wedge the accelerator to the floor to keep the butterfly valve open? Confirmation from the knowledgeable crew?
Get a latex glove and cut the finger off and then put the finger on top of the hose and use a zip tie or tape put the hand are bigger part over the throttle or air tube
@@itsme2369 I just found out that possibly the smoke can affect the mass air flow sensor which is usually right after the air filter so take take that out and then just cover it with some duct tape. I'm really excited about finding this video, because I already have that pump, however, all I have are Cuban cigars LOL
@@itsme2369 actually, we can just duct tape the hose right to the hole from the mass air flow sensor. It doesn't matter if there's a tiny bit of smoke that leaks out from the tape you can still look throughout the rest of the engine to find the other leaks. I have Gorilla Tape which is absolutely phenomenal if you've never heard of it
What size pipe nipple should be used with this Multi-Use Transfer Pump at Harbor Freight, it specifies that its a 1/2" diameter hose. Should I purchase a 1/2" diameter or a 3/8" diameter pipe nipple to fit the 1/2" connecting hose used by this pump?
I don't really smoke many cigars, but looking at a chart online the hole on the pump is about 12 -13 mm. So cross referencing it with the cigar gauge chart it should be a 0.19 or 0.2. I hope that helps!
thanks for making this video - always wanted to be able to do smoke test on my cars. So, I made one and after using up about half my cigar on my '86 944 Turbo, I did start to see a bit of smoke coming up from the back of my engine compartment. Ended up it was coming from the oil fill cap. is that normal? Funny thing was, I tried disconnecting my vacuum line that goes to the fuel pressure damper like you show in your video and I never did see any smoke coming out from there...that kind of concerns me a little too.
There's a seal on the oil cap that likely needs to be replaced. There's a hose on the filler neck that pulls vacuum so when there is a leak at the oil cap it will result in a vacuum/boost leak. As for not seeing smoke out of the FPR hose, it will depend on the thickness of the smoke sometimes. So with smaller hoses like that you might have better luck trying another cigar or perhaps a vape (maybe in another video). While this setup isn't great at finding smaller leaks it usually works for most common ones. Thanks!
So it looks like the seal is in the oil full cap. it does seem very hard though. however when I put my had over the oil fill hole with the engine running, it didn't make any difference in the engine idle...
Thanks great idea. i all ready have the same pump going to the store to get me a 1 dollar cigarette. And will try this on my car that is running lean. Just hope its not the intake..
