    I made some fog liquid out of a mixture of 25% distilled water, 25% vegetable glycerin and 50% propylene glycol. When I tested, using more VG or more PG did nothing to increase the density, and even more water could be used, up to probably 35-40% without much noticeable difference. The reason the fog liquids are mostly distilled water is first, it's cheaper, but second, PG can be highly irritative for the lungs and eyes, and some people even have adverse reactions to VG.
    Here in the US, you can order a gallon of USP/food grade VG for around $20-$25, and a gallon of USP/food grade PG for around $30, or medical grade for a bit more.
    Using too much VG will eventually clog the heating elements and destroy the pump. Because it's vegetable based, it burns and solidifies more easily. PG on the other hand acts more like a cleaning agent and will help to keep the elements clean, but it's still a fairly viscous fluid as compared to water.

      @@NordicDan Not too much, no, but I haven't used it more than a couple of nights a year (we do 80's reunion parties for what was a local dance club here in Louisiana)
      Then again, the machine only needs to work less than half as hard, because it's making more than twice the amount of fog. It's give and take. With the water and PG content, it should stay fairly clean, but if it doesn't, just run a mixture of 80 water/20 PG through it and that should clean it right up.

      As as heavy and knowledgeable e-cig user (basically a miniaturized fog machine) I can confirm using too much VG in the mix can clog the heating element and produce carbon build-up; a small amount of PG can help cleaning and also wicks better, but also too much PG can irritate lungs and eyes (PG is used to enhance flavor and give some throat hit). The general consensus for good cloud density is 70% VG and 30% PG or 70% VG, 10% distilled water and 20% PG.

      @@sacordovaplata Some e-juice recommend adding vodka, as it thins out the liquid, but doesn't affect the vapour production as it evaporates much quicker than water.
      For a smoke machine one could just use lab grade ethanol as one is not drinking it.

    Having worked in the entertainment industry, and having to deal with both foggers and hazers, I think the big reason for the distilled water is to ensure that the bulk of the glycol is flushed out of the heater to prevent clogging. Glycol tends to build up right at the coolest part of the heater element (usually intake / output areas) and can for a crystalline plug (looks kind of like pitch) and will destroy the element as it's nearly impossible to dissolve out again.

      I make soap with glycerine regularly. I wonder if an alkaline solution run through the pump would clear it out by saponifying the glycerine. Zero idea what that would do to PG or the pump internals, though.

      Pure glycerine is probably very irritating as it absorbs moisture pretty well. Adding the water at the beginning, instead of letting the fog absorb it from mucus membranes, may mitigate this effect to some degree.

    The water in fog juice is there for 2 reasons:
    1. It helps the manufacturers 'cut' the juice so it costs them less overall to produce per volume of liquid. It's hard to tell a difference between 30-50% water and 0% water in the fog output.
    2. It expands to like 1200% of its initial volume when it becomes steam which helps push the glycerine-based fog out faster and keeps the heating tube somewhat clean inside.

    the takeaway i got from this is to just spend $10 more on the 700w fog machine and put the larger pump for another $15 or so and do the 50/50 mix for the most efficient cheap "diy" fog machine. awesome video!

    I worked with all sorts of fog machines for 25 years in any size venue. Using fog machines causes sticky residu to stick to the entire rig, specially near the machine. I can imagine that the water makes machine last longer. Pretty sure the water also helps to diffuse the fog better (called granularity, an oil cracker/hazer has much lower granularity for instance). I checked bottles and the fog with higher granularity rating have less water percentage. In clubs you usually also add a fan for better area coverage. Oil based fluids give long lasting effect, water based is short lived but doesn't trigger a fire alarm.

      depending on the firealarm, the optical firealarms are super sensitive to any kind of smoke compared to the older radioactive firealarm which will take way longer until it pops off, that is why there is no firealarms in bathrooms on hotels as it would give a false alarm every time someone took a shower there

      @@Coinfindr proper alarms are usually both infra red as optic, however when using oil based smoke from smoke machine (not oil cracker), they still trigger the infrared due to higher exit temperature.. (340 Celsius) make sure to check type of alarms against your method of smoke (heat,pressure,glaciator) whenever you are in any venue. With oil based smoke from heat method smoke machine, you can be up for nasty surprise otherwise. The video does not show any oil based fluids..

    Bro, this was bad ass! I've been in or around the clubbing business most of my life and I was also someone who, installed, operated and purchased a lot of lighting and fogging equipment and I never though of something like this. Some of the fog machines I purchased or used were upwards of $1000 dollars and now seeing that it could have been as simple as using a cheap Wal Mart fogger and doing a few simple and inexpensive modifications makes me think of all the money I could have saved. And to think just the simple fog fluid formula was about 80 percent of the key to making a more effective fog effect... wow! This was enlightening!

    The issue of the modified fog fluid cooling down the coil a lot (after changing to a bigger pump)... you can use a small heating pad wrapped around the bottle. This will help preheat the liquid before it enters the pump and heating coil, which will help the coil retain more heat for longer periods of time before cooling down and dribbling liquid.

    (NZ High School in the early 80s) we used a 50/50 mixture of glycerine and water, atomized onto a frying pan with a potplant sprayer, and fanned with a Maths folder. Worked a treat!

    I used to be the special effects person for our school play. One of the nifty things I had for the fog machine was a cooler that had a metal grate inside where you put ice on top. PVC pipes coming out two ends, one to shove the fog machine into, the other for it to beautifully pour out and set over the entire stage.

    I found that exact model pump in a larger 1200W fog machine. :)
    The thread is G1/8, which is fairly common for pneumatic fittings and stuff (like, the one on 3d printer bowden tubes), perhaps that'd be an even easier way to connect to the tube of the heater, with a cute little PC2-G1/8 quick connector.

    Remember, "clear vinegar" or "white vinegar" "acetic vinegar" etc. does not really mean anything unless you define the percentage of actual acetic acid you mean and have in your specific bottle. It is hardly pure and normally already mixed with lots of water, because a 50/50 mix of pure with water leaves 50% and you don't want to be in the room then and you do not want that on you. Commercially available in 2%, 4%, 5%, 7%, 10%, 12%, 24%, rarely 30%, and very rarely a few others depending on country. In Northern Europe 24% is standard in grocery stores but there are normally a few bottles 12% standing just next to it on the shelves. In the U.S it is Usually sold as just 4-7% acetic acid and 93-96% water, but varies up and down, so well you see how many hundreds of percentages the difference can be. Be careful with spirit of vinegar/ättika/white vinegar/clear vinegar. Pure it has a pH of 2.5 and should be treated with respect.

      As chemists we use the term vinegar to be an estimate of 4%-12% acetic acid to water. A reason why we do this is it is faster to say vinegar than "dilute acetic acid". There isn't a single person watching this video that is going to use concentrated acetic acid thinking that's what he meant when he said vinegar. No one is going to use glacial acetic acid on their machine; Even if they had it and understood how to use it they wouldn't waste the money using glacial acetic acid when vinegar works just fine.

    Holy cow what a difference! If I can squeeze one into my budget I'll be doing this for this Halloween with a chiller! As far as losing heat from the block, maybe a timer set to kick the fogger off once you get an idea how long it takes to start seeing unevaporated juice come out, cool for however long is needed (again after finding the ideal time it takes), then kick back on, rinse, repeat....

    From the Vape side:
    PG is the carrier substance for the aroma (and the nicotine)
    VG is required for the fog.
    However, the fog that you see is mostly just water vapor. VG is hydroscopic, it attracts water. So it makes sense to add water to a fog fluid.
    You could try a mixture of 80% VG and 20% water

    There are commercially available fog liquids called heavy, extra heavy or dense or so which will do more or less the same. They are containing way more glycerin/propylene glycol then the standard/cheap fog liquids. Also they are way cheaper then mixing it on your own. A 5 Liter canister will be somewhere between 20-35€, maybe even cheaper.

      Maybe in Europe. A quick search, I can get a gallon each of VG and PG for $68.50, giving me 2 gallons with no dilution at $34.25/gallon. a gallon of 'extreme high density' fluid is $34.50/gallon. Assuming there is NO dilution in the premade the pricing is equal. But I suspect there is some water dilution in the premade. Not way cheaper as you mentioned.

    My biggest gripe with cheap fog machines is the duty cycle. "Continuous" duty foggers are not only expensive, but the solution always seems to be higher power heat exchangers. That still doesn't solve the duty cycle issue. Yes, it may lengthen it, but ultimately a heat exchanger has a cool down period. Have you considered building a true continuous fog machine of your own? I'm thinking either two automatically-switched heat exchanger trains or a more sophisticated, 3 mode modulating control system on one larger capacity heat exchanger. I would think that would allow it to operate continuously at its sweet spot (maybe 67% or so?) for extended periods.
    The other problem I have is the machine gumming up before the evening is through. If the controller were more sophisticated, it would be way cool to include an automatic purge cycle fed by a auxiliary reservoir of 50/50 vinegar/water mix. If there were two exchangers then the purge could be executed on the non-selected heat exchanger so that even with purging you never interrupt the production of fog.

      You need to use better fog fluid. Of course, cheap fog machines probably won't have proportional heater control, so your heat control might be entirely digital (on/off, based on when a thermodisc opens and closes) instead of proportional. If it smells burnt, you're literally burning the sugars in the fluid.
      The continuous duty machines have heaters capable of maintaining the required heat input. They also have closed loop feedback that monitors the temperature of the entire heater assembly with themocouples and adjusts accordingly with the duty cycle.
      The Ultratec continuous machines have heat exchange coils made from 1/4" copper tube about three feet long that is flattened and in contact with about a 6" square, thick aluminum heatsink. The G3000 actually has two coils. They take about nine minutes to heat up because the aluminum heater block is so thick, but once up and running, it takes a LOT to get them to time out. They'll happily chug along for hours at lower output. They're expensive because they're professionally designed products, expensive to make, and have to contend with liability if they don't work correctly.
      They're also easily rebuildable. It's only $60 for a Rapid Change kit and about thirty minutes once you get the hang of it.
      Cheap fog machines will always be cheap.

      what about true temp control and insulating the heat block.
      That way the temp stays at one set number, or close to it to prevent overheating and the insulation would lose less heat to the environment allowing for less power usage, and a easier duty cycle for the heater.
      Basically what we do with 3d printers and those suckers can run for weeks at a time.

    The vape liquid that should be used in a vape like the one you showed should be a 70/30 vg/pg base. Large bottles of vape liquid like the one you showed are VERY rarely 50/50 so its most likely that the one you used in your smoke machine that smelled nice was at least 70/30.
    vapers have been doing these kind of experiments for at least 7 years. vg gives the best cloud production but is thick and thus needs more power to be vaporised. pg is thinner, is good as a flavour carrier but produces a more pronounced " throat hit" which isn't pleasant hence the 50/50 or 70/30 ratios

    I highly recommend using a water based fog like Froggys Fog…their Swamp Juice has ridiculous hang time and density without the Negative effects of glycerin and PG. Operating a FEC, I’ve never had any complaints from froggy’s products.

    Thanks for the great tips. I presume distilled water is used for the same reason its used in coffee makers, Keurigs and CPAP machines. The minerals have been stripped out so there's no mineral build up from the heating element. That tends to shorten the life of the equipment if its not properly cleaned. In the case of fog machines, distilled water likely helps flush out any buildup that glycol and glycerin would leave behind.

    The water is used to shatter the glycerine/propylene glycol into smaller droplets when it turns to steam givng more fog.

      Interesting! I did test the glycerine at different concentrations and it really did seem like the water reduced the performance in a rather linear fashion (10x more water = 10x less fog density) if that makes sense...
      Maybe smaller droplets allow the fog to stay visible for a longer period of time?

      @@NicolasSalencPBP its probably also a cost cutting measure as you pointed out. I imagine it would only helps to small degree, be intrested to see a batch with maybe 5-10% water and see if that’s an improvement.

      @@NicolasSalencPBP I think it may have to do with safety and temperature, remember these fog juices must work with all foggers. I think the water is used to regulate the temperature of the glycerin and glycol, the water will never surpass its boiling point unless it is under high pressure so mixing it in would keep the glycerin from making dangerous fumes.

      @@y-o-u-b I believe acrolein forms at 290°C. I have never seen a machine that has a temperature sensor that cuts off the heater at a temperature higher than 260°C... However due to thermal inertia and the fact that the coil is way closer to the heater than the sensor is, the coil might get hotter than 260°C for a brief moment. Perhaps the water is used to absorb some of that extra heat?

    Couldn't you just preheat the juice reservoir to a higher temperature, but still below the flash point to not cool down the heating element as fast when the liquid passes through it?

      Good idea... That would also reduce viscosity, which should be helpful. Some insulation of the bottle and lines could help.

    Interesting video - The MPG / TEG / Glycerine all have different smoke (Fog) properties - one gives a very white smoke - one gives a more grey appearence - some have better "hang" times - The mix is very dependant on what the fog is to be used for... Different smoke fluid mixes therfore have different sweet spot temperatures for the fog machines, thats the real reason you shouldn't swap fluids between machines - eg glycerine based need about 350 degC but an MPG mix could be as low as 250 - so beware wet fog or burning the vapour.... Water is used to thin some mixes and help propel the smoke further.. some companies add a touch of ethanol to really make it pop... Regards Ady@ ConceptSmoke

    A word of caution some cheap fog machines do not have a separate metal tube in the aluminium heater block for the fluid instead a gallery is moulded in the aluminium . If the themostat fails and the failsafe fuse isnt positioned snugly you will pump a stream of molten metal across the room.

    Also, If you run the fog through a tube, then the tube Through a cooler with ice, then another tube where you want the fog to go, it will stay lower to the ground

      There's a quote about how those who love the law or sausage should not inquire too closely as to what goes into making them...
      There's no such thing as a "government" as a single monolithic entity. There are people fighting, working sometimes together and other times at cross - purposes, agreements that shift and change, equipment, paper (so much paper) and buildings.
      I suspect that vaping (which does after all add a new chemical to what you are breathing) had less entrenched support than tobacco, which has been around for hundreds of years.

      Because it needs more regulation. For health: There are cases of cheap juice containing compounds that are very dangerous, and cheap ecigs that heat even normal fluid beyond the point where glycerin starts producing the dangerous gas. Like this stuff will drop you quick. And for tax: When you can't regulate the flow of products, you can't effectively tax them. In Australia only nicotine juice is illegal. This covers both parts of this reasoning since nicotine is a poison and again, unregulated production and sales means many juices have _insane_ amounts of nicotine in them. It also would eat into their _massive_ tax on tobacco. They might not care about your life expectancy, but not many governments want their ppl falling over immediately thanks to unregulated Chinese goods - like, that's kind of a bad look. You want to be seen to be addressing that. These people still had many more years of being taxed on their tobacco, too.

      @@UnitSe7en Wow a lot of misinformation in that post. More regulation? Like what the FDA did? They have not approved 1 PMTA application for any vapor product. Which means any vapor product being sold right now has to be taken off the shelf. They waiting on applications from Juul, Vuse, and Blu. So any vapor that gets approved will be from Big Tobacco. That’s not sensible regulation.
      The temperatures we vape at are no where near the dangerous levels that you describe. Any study that proves that they over heated the coil, as in a dry hit. Vapers don’t go around all day long doing dry hits.
      The tax issue. They should heavily tax the scientifically proven deadly product to discourage smoking and not tax the 95% safer product!
      And finally, yes Nicotine is a poison. But it’s the dose that makes it a poison. Pure nicotine is 1,000 mg. 3-50mg is what’s in juice. Plenty of studies proving nicotine is as safe as caffeine. Smokers die from the tar, not the nicotine.

    Over thirty years ago while at work we had access to a pulse jet smoke machine. Of course I used the opportunity to crank it up and generate a huge thick dense cloud; which promptly drifted a short distance away on settled on a busy freeway bridge. Fortunately there were no crashing noises and I learned a lesson about big thick clouds.

    As a lot of car shops we also use a smoke machine to detect leaks inside a system like for example a combustion engine. I keep struggle to get enough smoke in the engine because of its size( we work on big engines for busses). This could potentially be the beste tuning guide i found so far to tackle this problem. thanks!

    When you use one of these indoors and the fog dissipates, it isn't vanishing, much of it is settling on all the nearby surfaces, so you are coating everything with a fine layer of glycerin and/or propylene glycol.
    The same happens outdoors but over a much larger space so the coating is correspondingly thinner.

      This. I'm livestreaming in my garage-sized studio and I don't want all my electronics and gear covered in that sticky coating (which then has dust settling on it too). Also, filling a room with a higher concentration fog will definitely be noticeable to anyone breathing it. Maybe not the most pleasant sensation haha

    Glycerin and glycol are essentially sugars, and would turn into gum when heated, which would explain the clogging issue. Hence the need for water.
    Yea, use vape juice and get hella nic'd out!!

    Unscented is fine for those who are allergic/have a toxic reaction to fragrance chemicals.
    As for why corproations don't just use the two ingredients, you answered in your comments: HIGH CONCENTRATIONS OF GLYCERIN OR PROPELENE GLYCOL CAN BE TOXIC. It does coat the lungs after all.

    Hi, I work as a service engineer and repair similar machines and stuff for scenes. You have a smoke machine in the video somewhere around 60 W, you can take a car for 1500 W, but unfortunately it is much more expensive. There is also a problem with liquid for smoke, pumps or regulators may fail and the heater clogs up due to the liquid. But small cars were still brought in with faulty pumps

      Yes, the pump seems to be the weak spot of most fog machines. I have owned a few crappy Chinese models in the past and the pump is the component that failed every single time. I'm hoping Nespresso machine pumps are better quality...
      Out of interest, how would you go about cleaning a heating block? My old DIY machine is filthy and could use a thorough cleaning and diluted vinegar just won't cut it x)

      @@NicolasSalencPBP hydrochloric acid in any concentration does not damage copper, only eats the debris inside the copper tubing - but it etches aluminium quickly and makes steel rust instantly
