I used a bit of baking soda to clean the basket and it looked respectable again. Many thanks for all your great recipe videos!
Cleaning the top of the air fryer is so challenging. I love this way steaming with lemons. I'll have to try that. Mine is a Cook's Essential and has a cover over the fan and heat element. I know it's terrible behind there, but the cover is not designed to come off. The basket I wash every time, but the top is really an issue.
Try the water and lemons and get something that can get behind stuff like bottle cleaner brush-but I'm not sure what the top of your air fryer. is like. But. when I make egg bites. @@pressurecrisp They put a screen like cover over the top of the unit, so it's pretty much impossible to get in there. But I think I'll try putting the boiling water in the basket with lemons and have unit unplugged. The other one I could get around the element and clean, but not this one.
I'm so glad I found this video. I've been debating which unit to purchase and this video showed the exact situation I promised myself never to do again. I had a chicken rotisserie that made such perfect chicken, but the clean up . . . intricate little parts where grease builds up. Too bothersome for me. Guess I'll stick with my nice wide round cornered baking dish. Thank you for the video!!
That grill comes off with 4 screws. I would have taken it off and voided the warranty. The newer models don’t have that protective grate because everyone took them off to clean them anyway 🤣
This was so fun to watch. Thank you for doing this. My Ninja food needs a deep clean as well. From the first time I used it, I was wondering how to get up in there. I should have looked up videos sooner. I don't know what took me so long.
You can just take those four screws out and put the grate in the dishwasher. And, you get access to clean what's behind it and clean more of the lid by hand. Much faster and can save the lemons for a lemon drop martini!
Another EZ way for me to clean my Foodi is to pressurize the pot with 8 to 10 cups of lemon water. then do a quick release with the lid closed so the steam dissolves the grease. Wipe clean do this often and don't let gunk build-up.
@@bprum84 You can bring water lemons/vinegar to a boil using the saute function and just lower the crisping lid if you want to. Let it. sit for 10-15 minutes and the steam will go to work on the grease for you. Then wipe with sponge or kitchen towel.
So, I weigh my time against cost when it comes to maintenance and servicing just about anything. For me, since I'm pretty mechanically inclined, it's worth it to remove the dang grill and clean it in the sink rather than going through all that. But that's just me.
Thank you soooooo much for this video!!! I hadn't figured out how to clean the Foodi and didn't want to use harsh chemicals. I tried your method and it worked out great!!! And it's super simple.
It really wasn't that bad but I do wipe it most every time I use it and deep clean it when it needs it. The Ninja Foodi Grill is the new challenge to keep clean-lol. Thank you for watching and commenting!
I clean mine on a regular basis and its not his difficult to clean if you keep up with it. The design flaw that I see is not being able to clean the fan-there is a lot of build up on mine but I don't want to touch it just in case I bend it and throw it off balance. I keep meaning to do a video removing the grate but I keep forgetting. I did this around Thanksgiving time and really was able to get in there and clean. thanks jordanthecat!
Great video. We've had our ninja foodi 9-1 for almost a year and wondered how to clean the top fan. Grease was falling off the black cover with the edge of a spoon but until we did the process of hot water and lemons and plenty of elbow grease once cooled the grime came off the pot and basket. The lid grease just dribbled off. Will be making this a regular thing!
Great video. You have the Steam mode on this version of the Foodi. I'm wondering why you wouldn't just use that feature to steam clean? Also, based on the amount of grease built up, I would steam longer so you don't have to put so much effort in scrubbing. Thank you for taking one for the team and letting your Foodi get so dirty. 😅
I have a different make and don't have a black outer grill but after over 18 months of daily use my lid is not as dirty as that and I have never cleaned it, so how are you cooking to get yours that dirty ?
Thanks Lisa for the tips. I hope I never let mine get that dirty because that looks like hard work and I don't like cleaning an oven let alone my foodi. Great tips!!👍
I have chest and respiratory issues, and it's the best thing I ever did getting rid of my mini oven and air fryer. All the smoke and smell for a little pleasure in your mouth. Now I just pressure cook and have a good frying pan, no more smokey air.
@@UncensoredCowboy not doubting you but have you personally done this yourself or know anyone that has dealt with ninja? I have the bit to unscrew it but am hesitant on taking them out.
IN MY OPINION, you will only void the warranty if you remove the small screws around the far outside. Removing the 4 that hold the black guard in place shouldn't have any impact on the warranty. They are made for taking the black grill out. I think if Ninja sees this they would tell you to PLEASE just take the black grill off and not to jab that metal rod brush in around the heating element.
I’ve found an easy way to keep up with cleaning is while doing a natural realease after pressure cooking, lay the crisper lid closed on the pressure cook lid while steam escapes so that steam is hitting the bottom of the lid. That super hot steam really loosens up the gunk on the crisper lid and you can wipe down pretty easily after each use.
Have you tried vinegar or baking soda instead of lemon? If it can clean the inside of an oven with ease, in sure it would do the same to this, considering it's size. Plenty of TH-cam videos on this cleaning technique.
The MAGIC ERASER IS 💯 HANDS DOWN THE BEST THING TO CLEAN THE INSIDE WITH. JUST LIKE THE TUB IT WILL BRING ALL THE BUILD UP RIGHT OFF. I ENJOYED YOUR VIDEO. THANK YOU 👍🙏
Thank you so much for the video!!! My Ninja foodi came out so well and it took a few hours but it was so well worth it. Now can you come up with a way too clean the Ninja Oven and the Ninja Grill!!! Thank you again and please keep up the wonderful work that you are doing!!!
Thank you Myron! The oven is a bit harder and well the grill-I think the non-stick coating eventually wears off snd make sit very difficult to clean-only thing left to do is order new baskets, bowls and grill inserts.
Great Video!! Mine got a little nasty after doing 4 big Batches in a row of buffalo wings!! Nice to see it can be cleaned up nice. Thanks for taking a hit for the team!! Your awesome!!!
Hi Lisa. Yes it's not the easiest kitchen appliance cleaning job. Once the grease gets baked on, the harder the job 👎😕 I've not tried the Lemon Steam and bristle brush method as yet. I use a hand held Steam Cleaner and grease cutting wipes. I'll steam the grill and lid, then wipe out and repeat. It works ok. I'll definitely give your demonstrated method a go next time. Wouldn't it be good if it had been fitted with a self cleaning device. Cheers 😀
@@pressurecrisp I bought one of those smaller bristle brushes today. It came with a bonus bottle brush. Cheaper to buy the twin pack, than buying them separately. 🤔
That’s what I do now. Clean/ wipe after every use and once a week when I make egg bites just lower the lid and let the steam work its magic then clean throughly. Works like a charm. Thanks lizadolidle!
@@daphnemiller5910 Agreed and all those nooks and crannies where the element and fan is is sure to have Clorox wipe liquid that will steam back into the food. The good old oven with flat steel walls seems much better where at least you can wipe it completely clean after cleaning. If your smart you can cook with drip trays and in a dutch oven and then the oven itself stays relatively clean.
I have one of these they are great, but l only use it twice then wash it carefully, as it tells you in the instructions? l would never let any cooking appliance get as bad as this, definitely not an airfryer, as it can damage the way it works so l would not recommend cleaning it in this way!
Put lemon and boiling water in the base. Put the machine on saute and put a peg or similar object, to stop the lid from closing completely. Then let the steam clean the inside of the cover. With a 'baby toothbrush' clean the inside of the lid. Or you could use a wire sink brush which is thin and used to unplug sinks. You must use a liner when cooking meat, especially as it tends to splatter. Unfortunately non of this information comes with the Air fryer. The Basket is the hardest to clean if you leave it too long. I hope this has helped you.
Well this is much easier to clean than cleaning the whole oven and washing a few pots whenever I broil crispy pork belly.. 😓 thank you for the video. 😊
Hi Scylla 20, Wish people would read the title-no cleaning for one month-of course its gonna be dirty and difficult to clean. But what I do is maintain it-try to remember to wipe it down after each use and once a week or more depending on how much I use it I. boil water with vinegar or lemons and close the lid and leet the steam work on grease-then wipe-occasionally scrub and it comes clean. And you are so right about cleaning the oven! Thanks Scylla 20!
I just bought a Foodi, so I'm trying to learn as much as I can before I start using it. Lemon sounds good, but I will be trying Krud Kutter. It is biodegradable and non-toxic. It should melt the grease off with ease. I know it works great on grills and hood vents.
You are life savior. Thankyou. I didn’t know how to clean at all. I bought screws and try to unplug but that doesn’t work at all too cos that lid seems to be glued there
@@pressurecrisp I use the VYTRONIX HSG1000 Portable 1000W Multi-Purpose Handheld Steamer - I also use it around the house for other cleaning chores. I do the pre steam method first just to soften it all up. So easy and affective, give it a go. It costs £28.99 here with free delivery. good luck - let me know how you get on.
It never needs cleaning if you wipe it after use when warm, not hot. Do you clean your outdoor grill until it is shiny? You are sending acid fumes into the electronics and fan bearings. Don't complain to Shark/Ninja when your fan starts vibrating or making a noise.
@@pressurecrisp Ummmm, it is much more than "opinion" as you say. The FACT is as reported by the design engineers for the unit. You are distributing wrong information and doing a disservice to owners of the unit. Forcing acid fumes into the electronics and nichrome heating elements are slowly destroying people's units.
Thanks for sharing your cleaning video. Now I know what I want, and is to wait for ninja to make a better design, I was going to get one next week but not anymore.
This was an exaggeration due to the fact I did not clean it for a month. Think I’m going to have to do another video on general cleaning. I clean mine with steam at least once a week maybe more depending on what I’m cooking. The Foodi is easy to maintain. Thanks esparzam2000.
Vinegar and baking soda some dish washer mix with water and apply with sponge or cloth and leave it for 20 minutes or overnight if too dirty , after that just clean with damp cloth. This is the best way for cleaning.
I thought about that lol. I may do it and see what happens because the fan is still a greasy mess. Maybe this weekend! I love Dawn! Only detergent I buy! Thanks!
Pressure Crisp ...lol...i will admit I let mine get this nasty...after burnt charred particles started flying into my food while air frying I finally said...must do better. I will admit I used only steam and dawn on a sponge and a fiberglass Chop stick....finally got it clean. I thought about buying star wrench set to remove fan guard. But for now...I fill inner pot with water and let the steam do its magic...every time I air-fry Greasy Foods.
lol-I think we all do...food gets the better of us-we are socializing and not focused on cleaning-cooking and eating for me-cleaning is the last thing I think of. Especially if someone stops by. But I will try to steam it once a week or every other. Thanks for watching and commenting!
Great video. These are all good ideas to clean these types of appliances. However, I really think these manufacturers need to make it easier for consumer to clean all the components that get grease buildup. It’s both a safety hazard and a health hazard if you can’t get all the components properly cleaned from all the grease buildup. I have an InstaPot duo with the air fryer lid, and I have had a hard time getting it cleaned properly. Keep up the good work on your video.
Good video. Thanks. Since you made this, have you tried to take it apart? I am thinking I am going t remove those security screws and replace with simple ones so I can disassemble to clean it.
Hi Lisa - I bought lemons to clean my ninja; however, rather than Dawn, I was thinking about a touch of Baking Soda. Just need to make certain there is no tell-tale taste or odor from the Baking Soda or Lemon. Thanks a bunch!
I was once so stressed about seeing all the mess in my Ninja Foodi that I decided to take the whole thing apart. Started out with the 3 screws securing the ''heater grate'' as you say, then the fan itself and in the end, I have destroyed the whole thing. I had it for less than a year, £200 right in the bin. Decided to buy a new one and now, I'd say I would only remove the 3 screws to have more access to the fan. It is quite easy and it won't bring you any problems, I think. I would never go beyond the 3 screws though, never again.lol I will try the lemon thing idea! What's the soapy thing you used? Is that washing liquid? Thanks!
Oh no!! I did take. mine part but did not touch. the fan-afraid it would become off balanced. If you keep up on cleaning it after every use or a deep cleaning once a week. it will maintain much easier. Thanks Jefferson F!
Lisa, my love, have you thought about using coca-cola (not diet coke) in there, or even vinegar as they are not really toxic! Personally, when I have used the Foodi for at least a month and I'm sure it's not going to "konk out" I would unscrew that plate to get to the metal behind so I could clean it and not bother with the bloody warranty but that's just me! Really great video though as always Lisa.
It’s silly ninja will void your warranty for taking off that protective grill to clean it. Glad the newer models don’t have it. Seems like there is a potential fire risk if people can’t clean behind the protective grill. I suppose if I had that model I would be more worried about fire prevention than a voided warranty though.
Plan on doing this Thanksgiving week! As it will be a ;little over a year old. I have. the star-forgot the other name but had them for my Jeep as I purchased a set. Thanks for the suggestion Ed!
I just cleaned mine today I used the lemon and vinegar and steam from boiling water closed the top and let sit it loosened the grease I also Removed the black grill and soaked it in straight vinegar and dawn dish detergent 11:54
Best cleaning advice for the Foodi - simple, no chemicals, and effective. Thank you! In summary: - Add 4 cups of warm/hot water - Add two lemons halved - squueze juice in first and then drop lemons in - Bring to a boil using sear/saute in high and using a cover to speed up boil if possible - Close the Ninja lid and leave for 5-10 minutes - Wipe down
When you say leave it sit for 5-10 minutes before wiping down what setting do we leave it on for it? Or is the moisture from just closing the lid enough to get the job done?
Thanks for taking one for the Team. LOL It would be so much easier to clean if you took it apart, but you made a very valid and important point for not doing that. Voiding the warranty and that you want to avoid touching the fan as you might upset the balance. I would think that a weekly or bi-weekly steaming, and light scrub with a small brush would work in most cases. Great to see that it can come back after a worst case situation. I will probably give it a go this weekend with some scented vinegar that I have on hand . Another great and informative video that will help any Foodi owner. Thanks again, Lisa.
Wonder if spraying some nonstick cooking spray will work to keeping the crisper lid easier to clean.Think I will give mine quick spray before I use so nothing sticks.
Using the aresol sprays will make the build up worse. But using oil in general will create build up- using oils and from the food you are cooking. I clean my Foodi weekly- I use the date function- with 2 cups of water and vinegar and lemons if I have them. Bring to a boil or simmer then shut Foodi off and close the lid. Let it sit for 10-15 minutes and then clean with sponge, bottle cleaner scrubber. It’s cones very clean. Thanks Sandra Fuller!

I should have done that! Much easier. Now when I steam egg bites I just lower the lid and let the steam work its magic. Thanks for the tip John Black!
Pressurize as in pressure cook mode? Would it work without the actually pressure lid?
@@bprum84 You can bring water lemons/vinegar to a boil using the saute function and just lower the crisping lid if you want to. Let it. sit for 10-15 minutes and the steam will go to work on the grease for you. Then wipe with sponge or kitchen towel.
Thank you for making this How To video. You really know how to make a presentation so simple with lots of good info. (And not boring either) 🤓
Glad it was helpful! And thanks-appreciate it!
So, I weigh my time against cost when it comes to maintenance and servicing just about anything. For me, since I'm pretty mechanically inclined, it's worth it to remove the dang grill and clean it in the sink rather than going through all that. But that's just me.
Only makes sense ..
Thank you soooooo much for this video!!! I hadn't figured out how to clean the Foodi and didn't want to use harsh chemicals. I tried your method and it worked out great!!! And it's super simple.
You are so welcome! and thank you!
I'm impressed at how easy that was considering how long you left it
It really wasn't that bad but I do wipe it most every time I use it and deep clean it when it needs it. The Ninja Foodi Grill is the new challenge to keep clean-lol. Thank you for watching and commenting!
You've done a nice job here, but no cooking appliance should be this difficult to clean. I mark it all down to it being a design flaw.
I totally agree, too much struggle to clean it up and it gets dirty after 2 or 3 uses, depending on how greasy the food is.
The black outer grill CAN be removed with a T-15 Torx screw bit. However the heating element CANNOT be removed for cleaning.
Or replacing the element-I was hoping it would be like an. electric stove where you could replace the element. Thanks David!
I have a different make and don't have a black outer grill but after over 18 months of daily use my lid is not as dirty as that and I have never cleaned it, so how are you cooking to get yours that dirty ?
You are allowed to remove the 4 screws holding the cover in place. It doesn't void the warranty.
Thanks Lisa for the tips. I hope I never let mine get that dirty because that looks like hard work and I don't like cleaning an oven let alone my foodi. Great tips!!👍
I recommend not letting get that dirty. I will most likely try to clean it every time but will deep clean every other week. Thanks!
I have chest and respiratory issues, and it's the best thing I ever did getting rid of my mini oven and air fryer. All the smoke and smell for a little pleasure in your mouth. Now I just pressure cook and have a good frying pan, no more smokey air.
As much as I love my NF, nothing should be that difficult to clean.
It was baked on for over a month-I would expect it to be a little difficult to clean. Thanks for watching!

@@jacquelineward1884 I showed /recorded everything that I di to clean age foodi. Sorry it didn't work out for you.
It doesn’t make sense to design an appliance that can only be cleaned by voiding the warranty.
Thanks for watching Carol!
Carol Lynch you can actually take those 3screws off
Taking the grate off doesn’t void warranty. It’s the silver screws that will void the warranty.
That's because they want us to burn these suckers out, and then run out and buy another one!
How do you take the black grill of
Like Monty said the 4 small screws around the far outside
I agree!
You would need a special tool, they are like a star screw but with a pin in the middle, I've not seen one like this before
I was thinking same just remove the grate only.
I would called those bottle brushes. Thank you for the hard work and sharing your experience!
Hi Lisa, they’re called bottle brushes and yes vinegar would work as well as lemon juice.

Girllll I’ve been looking for this comment cos I’m disgusted how long I’ve waited 😅 did it work for you?
@@zeyanamohamed982 it actually did!!!! I was so surprised!

I’ve had mine a few years. Still haven’t cleaned it. 🤪
Bottle washers work fab & paper towels don’t they. Well done with no nasty chemicals too . Thank you 😊
I’ve found an easy way to keep up with cleaning is while doing a natural realease after pressure cooking, lay the crisper lid closed on the pressure cook lid while steam escapes so that steam is hitting the bottom of the lid. That super hot steam really loosens up the gunk on the crisper lid and you can wipe down pretty easily after each use.
Oh I’m going to try this! Easier- lol. Thanks for the tip!
Pressure Crisp no problem! Just gimme a mention in your next one! I should have trade marked that one.......lol.
Will do!
It will release the pressure in one particular place not sll the full crisp lid
Have you tried vinegar or baking soda instead of lemon? If it can clean the inside of an oven with ease, in sure it would do the same to this, considering it's size. Plenty of TH-cam videos on this cleaning technique.
Great suggestion-think it would work great to clean the Ninja Foodi!

The MAGIC ERASER IS 💯 HANDS DOWN THE BEST THING TO CLEAN THE INSIDE WITH. JUST LIKE THE TUB IT WILL BRING ALL THE BUILD UP RIGHT OFF. I ENJOYED YOUR VIDEO. THANK YOU 👍🙏
I have a few magic erasers--thanks for the tip!

I use a Mr. Clean Sponge for the grill, for the inside I use a painter's sponge and it comes out very clean. I keep the lid close 30 mins or more.
Thanks for sharing! Thank Allison!
Make a video on that
Ninja should really put a splash screen on it so we don't have do all this. This is very useful. Thank you for info.
Agree with you. The splash/ mesh protects the heating element in the grill. Your welcome and thanks for watching and commenting!
As much as it cost, there should be a better method and removable parts to clean without having to do extra elbow work.
Hi Lisa. Yes it's not the easiest kitchen appliance cleaning job. Once the grease gets baked on, the harder the job 👎😕
I've not tried the Lemon Steam and bristle brush method as yet.
I use a hand held Steam Cleaner and grease cutting wipes. I'll steam the grill and lid, then wipe out and repeat. It works ok. I'll definitely give your demonstrated method a go next time.
Wouldn't it be good if it had been fitted with a self cleaning device.
Cheers 😀
Yes-I can’t wait for them to have self cleaning like a regular oven.
@@pressurecrisp I bought one of those smaller bristle brushes today. It came with a bonus bottle brush. Cheaper to buy the twin pack, than buying them separately. 🤔

I clean mine after every use and get no buildup as yours had. No fight just clorox wipes and done
That’s what I do now. Clean/ wipe after every use and once a week when I make egg bites just lower the lid and let the steam work its magic then clean throughly. Works like a charm. Thanks lizadolidle!
And then you're cooking with Clorox fumes? Or do you make certain you've rinsed really well?
@@daphnemiller5910 cooking meth in da NINJA😂
@@daphnemiller5910 Agreed and all those nooks and crannies where the element and fan is is sure to have Clorox wipe liquid that will steam back into the food. The good old oven with flat steel walls seems much better where at least you can wipe it completely clean after cleaning. If your smart you can cook with drip trays and in a dutch oven and then the oven itself stays relatively clean.
Amen
Or just use the steam function.
Bottom line clean everyday like yours dishes and once a week deep cleaning
Water lemon baking soda in height volume in 5mns
Rince and wipe
I'm glad I watched this BEFORE I unpacked my NF.
Now I can take it back for a refund.
Get the new one easier to clean
I spray mine with goop let stay on for about 20 minutes and I dunk using my spray nozzle on the sink rinse well and let it dry and it good.
I bought screws and try to unplug but that doesn’t work at all too cos that lid seems to be glued there
I clean mine with a Multi-Purpose Handheld Steamer, super easy and gets it clean.

@@pressurecrisp I use the VYTRONIX HSG1000 Portable 1000W Multi-Purpose Handheld Steamer - I also use it around the house for other cleaning chores. It never needs cleaning if you wipe it after use when warm, not hot. Do you clean your outdoor grill until it is shiny? You are sending acid fumes into the electronics and fan bearings. Don't complain to Shark/Ninja when your fan starts vibrating or making a noise.
Thanks for your opinion! and thanks for watching!

If you have a steam cleaner you can use the bristles on that to steam in it gets rid of the Grease

I would never go beyond the 3 screws though, never again.lol
I will try the lemon thing idea!
What's the soapy thing you used? Is that washing liquid?

Oh no!! I did take. mine part but did not touch. the fan-afraid it would become off balanced.

I wonder if carbonated water made on my soda stream would work?
It’s silly ninja will void your warranty for taking off that protective grill to clean it. Glad the newer models don’t have it.
Seems like there is a potential fire risk if people can’t clean behind the protective grill. I suppose if I had that model I would be more worried about fire prevention than a voided warranty though.
maybe its already been mentioned but why not use Dawn water instead of lemon water or add some Dawn to the lemon mixture.........
lol
It looks like there are only four bolts holding the grill on, take it off and put it in the sink with hot soapy water to soak, scrub and bolt back on.

Best cleaning advice for the Foodi - simple, no chemicals, and effective. Thank you!
In summary:
- Add 4 cups of warm/hot water
- Add two lemons halved - squueze juice in first and then drop lemons in
- Bring to a boil using sear/saute in high and using a cover to speed up boil if possible
- Close the Ninja lid and leave for 5-10 minutes
- Wipe down
Thanks!
When you say leave it sit for 5-10 minutes before wiping down what setting do we leave it on for it? Or is the moisture from just closing the lid enough to get the job done?
@@penut08tk You turn it off - the heat/steam generated by that point is sufficient, especially as the Ninja seals it in when it is closed.
I agree with the biweekly deep cleaning- I won’t do it weekly lol. Thanks!
