Just got one of these for Christmas from my sister, every year she tries to give me the latest version since I’m always cooking for our small church family. I was so grateful for your post, it helped me to understand how to use this smart lid pot, as I learn better with visual representation. I think I’m going to try your fajita bowl recipe next, I was hesitant about the steak, however after you kept cutting it and I saw the full outcome of it, I was impressed. I hate a dry steak!!! I’m now subscribed to your page, so I’m looking forward to learning new recipes for to serve at my church and for the homeless community here in my home town.
That’s amazing !! You’re an inspiration to others and obviously a valued member of the community!! Let us know how you like it !! Marc
I love your videos. This is the one place in which I feel products are NOT being showcased for the sole purpose of creating self-purposed sales so THANK YOU for all you two do. That said .... the basket is also good for steaming veggies, "boiling eggs", PCing potatoes, etc. I have the complete OL series; ie 6.5qt OL501; 8qt OL601; and 8qt OL701. The 701 auto-vent settings along with the built-in temp probe puts the 701 top-of-the-line. The BI internal temp probe can be used in the following settings: Sear/Saute, AirFry (AirCrisp), Broil, Bake/Roast, SteamCrisp, and Pressure Cook. As you guys know, with most Ninja devices that come with the BI internal temp probe, the temp probes are inaccurately calibrated and the Chicken Preset is set too high (170F). I find they devices run about 10-15 degrees off. What I do (when not choosing a Preset) is use Manual and set for 10-15 degrees lower than what temp I am wanting to reach. At about 10 degrees before unit is set to shut off, I do a temp check with an external temp probe. I do feel the BI internal temp probes, however, do come in handy as they allow one to not have to hover over the device as much.
LOVE this comment !!! Thank you so much, our goal is to be honest, independent and none bias while maintaining our integrity of providing trustworthy reviews. And thanks for all the information as well. Marc
Thoroughly enjoyed your product reviews. It helped my wife and I make our decision.
We appreciate you guys.

Yes, I would love to see your Mom's sweet beets recipe!
Love your videos, Marc & Jamie!!!
Thank you for this . I was wondering if they forgot my pressure lid . But you explained perfectly. No extra lid needed. Yeah
Great review. Have a Ninja outdoor grill and smoker and been using it almost everyday during Spring, Summer and probably the Winter. Invested in a set of Ninja knives and they are SHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARP!!!!!!! If I didn't have a very expensive AGA would purchase this Ninja tomorrow...
Haha that's awesome! We reviewed both of those! Check them out! - J
Got mine coming soon excited to try it only negative i could see is the next upgraded model needs to have better construction for cleaning the lid
The item lasts up to 18 months and right around the time the warranty expires, so does the "smart lid." Not an inexpensive item and it should have a 5-year + lifespan. Loved it and my family used it frequently but now Ninja is saying too bad and to purchase a new one. At nearly $400CAD, that's a high expectation of a customer to replace this item every 18 months.
Mine died as well. Sealing issue support couldn't help with. "no pressure" after about 18 months haha
@@CreepyLedbetter We're looking for a similar replacement that won't die so soon.
I’ve had mine well over 2 years, using at least 5 days a week and it’s still running like new. I’m in the UK though, not sure if that makes a difference
Excellent video! Honest as usual…I appreciate that! What kind of steak did you use? Everything looked delicious! Keep up the great videos!
Fab video as always, you guys should have 100,000 subs. I’ve a fun video idea. How about showing all of the kitchen machines you’ve ever reviewed in one place and letting us know if you still use them and show us how you store them? Cheers as always, Mark with a K from the UK.
Hey Mark, we actually shot that video last week !! We talked about 25 different air fryers and each picked our top one !!! Stay tuned for that video ! Cheers ! Marc
@@TheAverageKitchen Talk about perfect timing. Can’t wait to see it, Cheers
Hell yeah I love it and now can’t do without it. Magic, I use mine daily.
This looks great thank you so what is the model of the top of the Line with probe and automatic release and best accessories and buffet feature keeping food at 105 to 107 for serving.
If the top features are available in the 6 and 1/2 qt i want it. Because I
Am a widow and cook for myself alone 90 percent of the time. So the 8qt I don’t need unless that’s the only way to get the Probe and auto release. Thank you so so much
I'm not really sure what the model number would be for that, but you could find it for sure on Ninja's website. Thanks for watching! - J
Hi that great video thank you. Please tell me do you think this ninja foodi 15 in 1 is better to buy or speedi 10 in 1 ? Thank you
If you need a pressure cooker, get the SmartLid. If not, get the Speedi. - J
I would love to know what Ninja machine (multi-cooker/Speedi/dual airfryer) you would recommend for a fam of 5! Only small appliance we have is a steamer so far.
I think you could get away with the Speedi, but if you eat larger portions or want leftovers etc., go with this one I think. Thanks for watching! - J
Thanks for this really informative video. I have one question. I normally cook for a family of 5-6. It seems to me from the video that in the dish you prepared, you can cook a maximum of two steaks at a time on the top level. How would you make this dish for an entire family of that size?
Thanks for watching ! I guess it depends on the size of steaks. But you wouldn’t be able to put 4 large steaks on the top rack. Cheers. Marc
I just picked this up at best buy for $129.99! Looking forward to using it! You just skip using the thermometer, now? I know you had trouble the first time you used it. ETA, I picked up the ol601, so it's a little different.
Let us know how you like it and how the thermometer works. Cheers. Marc
Hi. Is there a way to calibrate the thermometer as you said before it was off by a mile?
Thanks for t review. We will buy one of these machines. In the UK they are
calling it a 15 in 1.
Looking forward to seeing more of your vids.
@@TheAverageKitchen collecting in 5hrs time. Vwill test it out for supper.
We have been using it regularly.. roast pork, beef casserole, yogurt, and many more things.
I would like to make cheese but can not see a way to adjust fermentation temp (82f) and setting maturing for 12 hrs at 72f.
Any suggestions gratefully received.
Is there a good printed cookbook for the 501 pressure cooker with the smart lid?
Hi, could you tell me how easy it is to clean the "fixed lid", please.
Thanks for posting.🤗
I wipe it down with a damp cloth after every use. It’s been totally fine. If you were air frying greasy things all the time, there may be a build up gradually, but for me….. there hasn’t. Marc
Hello @theaveragekitchen have you ever used the pressure cooker for canning food?
Hey there, I haven’t, but I know many people do. If you try it, let me know how it goes. Cheers. Marc
What's your opinion on the foodi 8qt pressure cooker vs the Foodi 10 qt. 2-Basket Air Fryer?
Thanks for the vídeo! Could you do the same for the ninja grill xl?
Greetings from Brazil!
We'll see what we can do! Thanks for watching. Here's our review of that, we'll try for a follow-up. th-cam.com/video/ojAF9gTYobk/w-d-xo.html - J
Hi guys, it’s your old pal Mark with a K from the UK here. Do you plan on testing the new Ninja stack air fryer? It’s released here in the UK tomorrow I believe but I’ve not found a single pre release review on it. Cheers as always.
Hey mark. Funny you ask, literally just saw it on Instagram. Not available in Canada or US yet. But one thing I can promise you, as soon as it’s available, we are ordering it and reviewing it. Cheers buddy. Marc
I got the one with the two lids several years ago. I really do love it. But there is a learning curve to get it to do what you want. Not all the videos on youtube are as great as they appear. One of the first things i tried was chicken wings. They came out good, but the cleanup was a pain. I used the pressure-cooking feature. Then the crisper feature. The basket was covered in meat and grease. I used cooking spray but still the wings stuck. I tried soaking then boiling it and ended up using a green pad to scrub off the mess. Afterwards everything would stick. So, one day I found how to make country fried steak. All you use is the inside pot. I used oil and some cooking spray, but it stuck again, and I tried to boil it out and soaking, but it did not work. Ended up scrubbing it out with a green scratch pad. And ruined the pot. So, I had to replace it and the basket. U.S. $50. Now when I make chicken wings, I pressure cook them for 10 to 15 minutes. And while they are cooking, I set my stove to 425 and let it heat up. Then pour the wings into a bowl and put some olive oil on them along with some pepper and salt. Take a piece of aluminum foil and cover a baking pan and spray with Pam. Then pour the wings on to the pan, cook uncovered and put in the oven for 20 -30 minutes. Cleaning the basket and pan are easy to do. One thing it works really well at doing, is thawing stuff out. I have tried steaks every way I can think of, so far for 1/2 thick or less works best on the pressure-cooking setting. Anything larger than that I pressure cook for 8 to 10 minutes. IF you pressure cook it to long it will taste like a roast. Afterwards drain the pot and air crisp at 350 degrees. I cook it for 5 to 8 minutes. From there on I check every 3 to 5 minutes to get it where I want it to be. The best way to cook steaks is on a grill, an open flame. The one pot spaghetti is not bad but not great. The problem is finding a sauce that you like. It is somewhat fast, and you only have the one pot to clean up. All in all, it is OK. I use the foodi for many things. And there are lots of recipes you can try, here on youtube. You were saying the first time you released the vent it scared you. Don't feel bad, did the same thing to me. The wife got a puppy, small dog. I did not want anything to do with her. So, one night I was cooking, and she creeped into the kitchen and was watched me. I hit the vent lever and it scared her, she went to shaking. And lost all her bladder control. Scared the piss out of her. So, we call her puddles. After that I started to bond with her and now, she is like our own child.
Haha great insight. I had the two lid one at one point too. Loved your comment. Thanks. Marc
Thank you so much for this comment. Because of it, I will never try to make wings with it!
In your original review you raised issues with the probe being completely wrong + burning vegetables. Have you found that still being an issue?
Unfortunately we have never had luck with ninja probes. And we’ve tried several. Marc
I’m unsure if I should get the 6.5qt or the 8qt. Costco has the 6.5qt on sale for $100 US
Purchased that recently mainly for pressure cooking. But I am really concerned that there will be lots of spills on the lid and coil after pressure cooking and cleaning that will be a nightmare. Many suggests boiling water and says steam will clean the lid but I don’t like the idea of running this twice for each and every cooking. Any thoughts?
Great question. I’ve never had issues with the coil getting wet. Technically that’s how the designed it. So should be fine. Marc
I have been using mine for a while for pressure cooking mainly. I've never encountered any issue regarding that.
How do you clean that lid? I have one with the two lids. But want to get another one for my daughter and they don’t make it with two lids anymore. That pressure cooker lid can get nasty but I can clean it easily. The new one doesn’t look like it would be easy yo clean.
They “say” you can run it on a cycle with water and lemon. But I’ve never tried. Marc
amazon canada has the 6qt version priced around $200. is it worth buying at that price point? would you rate this higher if you you purchased it for this price?
I love this product, used it this morning prepping Christmas dinner. I have the one with the automatic pressure steam release. If it has that, for that price, that’s unreal. Marc
does air fryed chicken taste differently to chicken made in the oven or its pretty much the same?
I noticed the heating element is exposed to gge food. How do you get those cleaned.
Curious. What’s gge food? Warm damp cloth does a great job on cleaning. Marc
I have the ninja foodi with the separate lid for pressure cooking which is annoying but I do love it and how it cooks. If I upgraded would I get this one or do you like anything better? I make lasagne, spaghetti, soups with potoatoes and things the pressure cooker does really well, saute the meats first etc. I was looking at this one and ninja speedi...any thoughts which is better right now in 2024?
If you want to pressure cook, get this or look at one of our Instant Pot reviews. If you want quick meals the Speedi is fantastic. - J
I'd like to see you guys do some cooking videos. I'm a Chef & a food junkie.
We had done a bunch before we started doing reviews. In our reviews we generally cook. Shooting an Instantpot video tomorrow where I’ll be making butter chicken, sloppy Joes and cheesy creamy Ziti. Cheers. Marc
@@TheAverageKitcheni just got a Ninja 15 and have yet to eat for the day, all of those sound amazing and I'm looking forward to watching!
Does the heater get damaged by the steam while you're pressure cooking? How is the longevity of this product?
I don't believe so, it's designed that way. And so far so good about 1+ years. - J
LOVE sweet beets but also love sweet beets with a few HOT peppers (of your choice) added to jar. Sweet & Heat !!!
Which one you recommend for a student who lives alone?
Foodi smart lid or speedy?
Do you need a pressure cooker? If so, the SmartLid, if not, the Speedi. Hope this helps! - J
@@TheAverageKitchen
I don’t really need pressure cooker, I was going for the smart lid but today there is a deal for speedi just 139£ on Amazon!
That discount made me confused 🤣!
Best Buy has now for $130, but I am wondering if it is the same model you have since you mentioned that some of them don’t have automatic pressure release. Could u provide the full model number please
@TheAverageKitchen I figured it out, the one you are talking about in the video is ol701 and the one best buy has is ol601 which is missing the automatic pressure release
Maybe you can help me make a choice. I am choosing between ninja foodi(op300) and ninja speedi(on400), the main differences are that the speedi does not have a pressure cooking function and I don’t know if this function makes sense if the ninja speedi has a steam cooking function and how do I I realized the main differences between pressure cooking and steaming are only time and speed of cooking, and everything else is the same. What then to choose?
I suppose it depends how quickly you need steamed or pressured food to be cooked? - J
@@TheAverageKitchen Cooking time is not important to me, I would like to understand whether there is any point in the pressure cooking function or is it better to use the steam cooking function if time is not important to me? I'm choosing between ninja foodi and ninja speedi.
I would say if you don't care about pressure cooking, get the Speedi. Just as if not more versatile than the foodi, just of course without the pressure cooking function. Plus, easier to store and costs less. - J
Just bought this and was reading that lots of people are having problems with the heating element producing large amounts of smoke. And there is an inability to go from pressure cooking to air frying because the splatter from the pressure cooking getting in heating element . Have you had issues with this ? I just purchased and read about this and debating on returning it
Hey. Thanks for watching and the comment. I’ve had zero issues with this product. Marc
When cooking the steak, does all the fat run down into the rest off the food?
Thoughts on reo ChefMaker Combi Fryer ?
@@TheAverageKitchen My apologies for the oversight. I meant “Dreo ChefMaker,” not “reo”. It’s highly recommended by many cooking channels. I hope you can acquire one for a review soon.
So far these are what im leaning towards
1. Breville Smart Oven Air Fryer
2. Joule Instant Vortex Air Fryer Plus
3. Ninja Air Fryer
4. Cosori
So how is this one vs the speedi?
Great question. Both are fantastic products. If you would never pressure cook, go with the Speedi. If you like the option to pressure cook, go with this one. Marc
@@TheAverageKitchen i actually got a instant pot already so I think I will go with the speedy then, thanks for the comment :)
Still trying to find the killer use case for mine (12 in 1 model below this) and thought, yeah, fajitas sounds good. But then, overdone steak and peppers lacking any kind of roasting. So still looking i guess.
What I don’t like is the lid staying attached for cleaning purposes and I can see myself burning while trying to take out the food out
It should be out of the way enough, but the cleaning would be a bit more challenging yes. - J
I loved my cooker but now I'm getting a "plug in" error code even tho it's plugged up and has power. Has anybody else had this issue?
Yeah, after asking a few questions and trying things that didn't work they offered a discount on buying a new one
Black Friday sale 2023 at Best Buy I just got this for $130 plus tax!🎉
Me too! And I brought it to Brazil protected by six pillows in a gigantic luggage!
Lucky you, I wasn't able to find an 8 qt for that price on amazon. The smaller versions are that price but not the 8 qt. Having a big family one really needs that larger size.@@MrSecyrb13
I want to see video about beets. I looooove beets & i also boil them for hours on stovetop. Pls ❤
The recipe was for beef AND veg so the machine may have based the temp based on ambients including the veg temp . That would make a difference.
To help with that steak temperature, and still get the remaining ingredients fully cooked, lower your temperature a bit. everything should cook the same with the time and the meat should come out med-med/rare, rather than med-med/well
£250 U.K.
@@TheAverageKitchen that was on sale on amazon, not sure how many pounds to the dollar. It said it was normally £317 so I rushed to buy it, but now the normal price is £270!! I’m still experimenting and looking for good steam combi meal videos, but so far it’s amazing. Nice video, I’ll have to give it a go 👍🏻 thanks
I’ve never really understood the phrase “quite frequently” makes no sense.
It's a lousy pressure cooker. It always takes multiple heat ups to gain pressure. I don't recommend.
skipping your review. No self respecring cook puts challots in fajitas, especially someone from Texas LOL
It's a shit product, It looks amazing and have more options for cooking. Please buy this product if you want to use it only for a duration of warranty period. Mine is broke down just after the warranty period and from Ninja there is no support to resolve this issue. I replaced the probe as requested by them but the plug in error remains the same and Ninja told nothing else they can do. Tbh it's a waste of money. 5 years back I bought a Blaupunkt air fryer from B&M and that is still working fine :).
Sadly quite a few people have had this experience. The same view is on every forum. But the rest do adore it too 🤷♀️
I have full house of ninja/shark gadgets & they work fine & without issues.
