    Here in France, french toast is called "pain perdu", which literally means "lost bread". As we have plenty of baguettes in our kitchen drawers, some of them get forget and become dry. We then use the eggs and milk mixture to rehydrate them, so those baguettes can have a second life and don't finish in the trash ! Also work with soft bread, but using baguette is the traditional way
    Also, they're covered with a cinnamon and sugar mix, but that's cool you put an american touch to it

      In Germany we have the same called „Poor knights“. Traditionally served by my mom with a bit of jam or apple compote as lunch on weekdays. Stale white bread slices (baguette works perfectly fine) - no cream in use, only milk, eggs, sugar, cinnamon. There is a fancy version using German wheat flour bread rolls, cut into wedges, soaked in milk and egg mixture, breaded and fried but served in a foamy hot or cold dessert sauce made from white wine, sugar, lemon juice and egg yolks, cinnamon. My grandmother served these on Sundays after dinner.

    I adore But Cheaper. As a 21 year old just starting out in the field I want to work in (which doesn't pay well in the first place), these videos save my butt. I've made healthier dishes that I enjoy much more than takeout at home for a fraction of the price and it's so good! I've made some beautiful meals for myself and others thanks to you and that wonderful cookbook you wrote!

I've attempted recipes I never would have been brave enough to humor had I not watched you do it right in front of me first. I've saved quite a bit of $ in the process too, naturally. Thanks for doing these, man. French toast is seriously overpriced in every good breakfast place near me so this is something I'll have to try and tackle soon.

    WOW. I love this so much, not just because the bread is homemade, but because you actually soaked it long enough. So many people just "dip" the bread and frankly it tastes like dry bread with egg on the outside, and that is NOT the point of French toast. The moist, custardy inside of yours is what French toast dreams are made of. I WILL me making this!

    • @randomstuff3201
      @randomstuff3201 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I'm not sure of his reason, but it helps even out air bubbles from previous proofing, and it gives your loaf a more even shape as it goes into the pan for the final rise. And if desired, you could also roll out your portions of dough, sprinkle them with cinnamon sugar and then roll, pan, rise, and bake...

    In addition to the spices, also add a bit of vanilla to the "batter". And use maple sugar instead of white sugar

    So, one thick boi french toast memory that I've got is from back when I was in college in Salem, Oregon. There's a restaurant there called the Sassy Onion, and they would do some legitimately thiccc slices of french toast. Like, comfortably two inches thick slices from a round loaf. What was very interesting is that they wouldn't soak it all of the way through, so the middle would still be dry, but what made it pretty special was that they would use the eggs to stick either cornflakes or frosted flakes to the faces of the bread, which would give it a really nice, crispiness. However, more than their 'regular' french toast, I would pretty much always go for their cinnamon swirl french toast, where they sliced one of their cinnamon rolls and used that to make french toast, with a lovely icing as the syrup. Have that with some eggs over easy and their pepper bacon, and you had an outstanding Sunday brunch ^_^

    Y’all should do “but buffer” and show me how to add meat to everything. Or other proteins I’m not judging

    Yummy 😋 I'll take the real maple syrup and a pat of 2-3T of butter over any chocolate stuff.. (that's great for the ice cream)
    I love that bread recipe, for me in your demonstration, the milk and eggs are making the difference. Great food 🤗🍀☘🌿🌻

    I've been making (cheaper tbh) homemade french toast lately and hadn't thought to to whisk while adding seasoning! I've been re-whisking every time I add another slice since the cinnamon sugar rises 😩
    Also u should try making it a bit crispy and rolling it in cinnamon sugar after frying for an ultra sweet fair food-esque version.
