Hello Fellow Film Fanatic Big Pauly,
Just like myself you don't have a Wife or Kids, so what are you going to spend your money on ? A hobby of course !!
You could have been a keen Angler, or a Motorbike rider or classic cars builder etc:etc: but NO you are a Film Collector.
Your 4K's, Blu-ray's, Steelbooks, posters, film character models, mugs, TV shows collections IT'S All just stuff at the end of the day. But it gives the collector pleasure. I own 2,000+ dvds & blu-rays plus a few film 12" tall models and 20 film posters.
If we both died tomorrow what would happen to our Hobby collection, sold off, donated to charity or given away to family / friends ??
Just enjoy the fact that you own what you own, keep want makes you Smile, sell or donate what you don't like to Cex / BH foundation.
I started back in 2002 with Ali G Indahouse #1. The magic of going to a Cinema back in the 1970's seeing Star Wars, Jaws , Close Encounters and Alien... ..can never be forgotten and maybe was the beginning of what We own now. Life can be short, so enjoy the now, buy or spend money how you like, you earned it so do what gives you pleasure. Your subscribers (l am One) like you for being you. We are all addicted to Film in some way or another. You travelled to London HMV & FP store, recently plus Car boot sales in the Summer, so ' don't sweat the small stuff ' but enjoy what makes you happy ( and look after your health, of course. )
    Kind regards,
    Movie Mad Marcus 💿🎬👍😃.

I used to buy whatever whenever haha. But now that my space is limited it actually helped me downsize my collection to the stuff I love the most. Granted I still have completed franchises even if I don’t dig all of them. I will still occasionally blind buy something but if I don’t love it I have zero problem selling it off. I’d rather put that money towards something I know i love. It took a couple of years to get this mentality though. With all that said I don’t judge others in any capacity on how they collect. Spend your money as you please! You worked for it.

I am one of those types of Movie Collectors who only buy films that I like or where I have a strong connection to the respective title like John Carpenter's The Thing from 1982 ❤
I have been collecting for over 30 years and a lot has changed over the years, including the size of the collection.
Nowadays my collection is much more manageable than it used to be.
I must also admit that I don't think much of the 4K format and prefer the normal standard Blu-ray and the DVD version because it is also cheaper for me.
But that is what makes this hobby so special, that there are different collectors.

You like many of us, have a romantic connection to physical media. Your childhood might not have been great, and escaping into the TV was your security blanket. Maybe a few of us were left to our own devices as children and spent all day watching movies etc.
Obsessive collecting is a mental health condition for sure. It's a distraction from how shitty life can be.
I had a collection of over 450 movies. Over the last dew yesrs, it is down to 135 absolute rewatchable classics.
My advice. Don't go shopping for movies for the reamider of the year. Take a break, before it breaks you.

I would definitely put you in the hoarder collector category, haha 😄. Why not make some space in your storage facility? You could store some of those duplicate Pixars, for example, rather than a load of cassettes or videos from decades ago. I appreciate that they also have memories, but they are expensive memories hidden away in boxes in an expensive storage unit. Memories don't have to be in objects. They can also be in photos or a single special item. Just a thought. Also, maybe stream a well reviewed movie first, sometimes, before making that expensive purchase. As it all adds up financially.

For your steelbook corner, you should put a small riser at the back of the shelves so that you can have one layer infront of the others. That way you would still be able to see the spines of the movies on the back row. Hope that makes sense haha!

  • @namethestars
    @namethestars 9 วันที่ผ่านมา +4

Hoarders will hold onto films even if they don't like them just to say they have them, collectors will know when to curate and pare their collection down. A long time ago I fit the first category but over the years I've fallen into the second as I'm not afraid to remove films now that just don't do anything for me. I refuse to keep things now that amount to little more than dust holders.
And definitely not a completist 😅 I'm actually learning ways to create films that have more than one into sets I would want minus the additions I hated. For instance I really like Kingsman: The Secret Service and The King's Man but hated Golden Circle so created a cover for a double blu ray that just houses them. Best of what I love minus that sequel and a curated addition that will stay.
Rarely do I blind buy now, instead I will do a digital rental to SEE how I feel and only then will I buy it if I know it's for me.

Just joking. 😅 I, myself collect for about 15 years now, but i quitted some 2 years ago. Just because of storage shortage. One small room is jam-packed, full from the floor to the ceiling. Time has come to skip a lot of titles. Movies I won't watch for a second or third time. There are movies I want to keep... but there are more that I can get rid of. Don't want to end up with a hoarding disorder. 😅 But it's nearly just the case: right now I have about 3500 dvd's, a lot of 'blindbuys' and almost everything is from secondhand stores and thriftshops. So it didn't cost a lot. Truth is: collecting is fun, it gives you a satisfying feeling and a big collection is also a nice sight to see... but beware you won't get in over your head.

Interesting video Paul, there is no right or wrong way to collect, we all do what we do for different reasons and nobody can tell you what is right or wrong, it’s a personal decision…..if you want to keep multiple copies then do so, if you want to have just five films in your collection then go for it…..there is no right or wrong, if blockbusters are you thing, then awesome, if you love art-house movies only, then fill your boots 😃 I have a vast collection (as you know) and have a vast interest in multiple film styles and film eras, I enjoy all genres and have no problem watching long, slow burn films or quick plotless short movies….its the story for me first and foremost. I never buy multiple copies but that’s just my choice (again, no right or wrong way to collect) this week alone I watched 15 black and white 100 year old short films, a 60 year old comedy and a Tv show from 50 years ago (plus a couple of modern films on Netflix) just keep doing what you do Paul and don’t worry yourself about it. Ooh yeah if you ever get rid of the Curious Case Of Benjamin Button movie, I would love that slipcover 😉 take care mate👍😃👍

Everyone’s different, but here’s my way of collecting…
I only really go out and buy movies that I want, and know I’ve seen and enjoyed and would rewatch. I only tend to buy DVD as it’s much more affordable for me personally, but have now started to get the occasional Blu-Ray purely because of bonus features (but I will duplicate and buy on DVD & Blu-Ray).
When I’m charity shopping, i will quite often get some DVDs that sound decent, just to check out. Once I’ve watched them I’ll then decide if I want them in my collection. However I’ll always make it a priority to watch them as soon as possible after buying them so they don’t clog up space for so long.
I don’t really tend to get TV series on DVD, purely because I just find it easier to stream them, however the few TV series that I adore, I do own on DVD if available on DVD.
Just my addition to the conversation ✌️📀

I look at my tv box sets and sometimes think to myself, how many times in my remaining lifetime will I realistically watch them again.
Especially series like supernatural and X files which both have over 10 series and are a lengthy time invested to watch and to think I may only get to watch them once maybe twice in my life time makes me think, is it worth spending more money on further tv shows to do the same.
Unless I just stop watching anything new and just start to watch my own collection now i will never have time to watch some of these series.
Great video and definitely makes you think to yourself about how much more physical media one actually needs/wants in one's collection.

Enjoyed the video , very interesting to hear your views . I think it must be hard to be a TH-camr because there is always a tendency to try and out do the other channels out there . I watch a lot of different physical media channels and I see that quite a bit even more so now with the 4Ks . A person’s personal collection of anything should always include things that you love and enjoy . It shouldn’t be things that have been bought because it’s been seen on another channel . We only need one copy of each movie or book etc maybe two if it has unique special features . It’s good you are realising that your collection should be personal to only you no one else and that you are doing something to change that fact . I’m not a person who follows trends and I only collect DVDS and CDs I have really no intention of upgrading but that doesn’t make me any less of a physical media collector than people who collect blu-rays/4Ks even though I feel my opinions get over looked because of that fact . Good video it would be good to see more videos as you go through your collection in more depth and the process of seeing you change it into a collection that you will love 😊

Of the three “types” you mention I’d put myself in the second but, saying that, I never really think of myself as a collector but simply someone who loves movies. Yes, what I have is clearly a collection but, and no offence intended here, I’ve grown rather jaded by the onslaught of TH-cam channels that seem to focus more on the quantity than the quality and just show and tell what they’ve bought instead of discussing the films themselves, the directors, actors, music, genres, inspiration, influence and joy that movies give them. However I’ll be the first to say I have been more of a hoarder as in the DVD era I certainly had way too many films I didn’t really care for. Most of those have gone though as a recent tragedy has left me leaving my home of 49 years and moving into a one bedroom flat …
… but in a way that’s also helped me with my movies as I simply don’t have the cash to afford every new release and, to be honest, don’t want to now. So I’m more inclined to ignore the big releases and buy from the boutique labels who are releasing more cult fare and, in particular, lots of classic Seventies and Eighties movies I’ve long adored.
As for the ‘complete set” OCD again I’ve simply not had the money or inclination to pick up everything just so I can have a full numbered set on a shelf though I did start doing that for the hugely underrated BFI Flipside releases and subsequently discovered so many incredible gems that I do buy each release as they’re not monthly hauls like other companies. By Xmas that total will be 50 and I’m frequently dipping in a rewatching them as they also come with fantastic extras.
But yeah, it can become all too consuming but I think most film buffs nowadays have experienced fatigue or some sort of existential crisis. Just as long as you’re not simply rebuying things for the sake of it I honestly don’t see any issue and in these dark, uncertain times we all need something positive to cling onto …

I am a minimalist who understands the need for physical media. It's an ongoing battle in my head every day. Over the years I have sold my collection twice and bought 90% of it back again. Recently I discovered blu-ray sleeves and they are perfect for me. I have under 100 blu-rays but they take up little to no room. I think I have finally found the perfect balance for me. I get that some collect because they look at their collection as artwork but I only buy the films I love and will watch numerous times. Sleeving them is the best thing for me.
That said, I love this channel but I won't lie, when you say things like "I have a copy of this at home but with a different cover or on a different format" I think it's a little bit crazy. I don't understand why anyone needs more than one copy of a film they like unless it's for reselling purposes. If you're buying to resell then that is another conversation. I am very glad to see you are thinking about what you're collecting for. There is nothing wrong with what you are doing Pauly but you can also save a lot of money and space by asking yourself some questions when you're in a shop or shopping online.
I love the channel and I love physical media but I adore seeing people like yourself think about the reasons why you're doing it.

*Personally* I love to blind buy as it's usually cheaper and easier than finding new titles to discover (that you'll never know if you like unless you try). I don't stream on principle where streaming channels don't release on physical so are trying to destroy my hobby, and considering it's cheaper to buy a disc than see something at the cinema, saying not to blind buy to me is the same as saying "I don't watch movies at the cinema in case I don't like them"... at least if I buy a disc I can get some money back; I can't watch a movie in the cinema, come out and say to the box office "I didn't like that, can I have half my money back"

I am currently curating my collection. About 2/3 of the movies, I have seen at some point, but I didn't rate them back then. The other 1/3 I have never seen, but I bought them at some point for various reasons. So I share this problem with you. I definately started as a hoarder. So to change things up, I am going through every movie I have. Every movie between 4 and 5 stars stays in the collection. My aim is to get a more personal collection, that reflects only me.

I enjoy a bargain but what I seem to do now, is watch the trailer and then decide to buy or not. Here's the way I've done it. If I know I'm not going to watch a film more than 5 times I won't keep it.
I rent films from Cinema Paradiso and that allows me to decide whether to buy a film, or not.
I have converted most of my films into MKV files at exactly the same quality that is on the disc. Then I put them into boxes and store them away.
When I then watch a film I may decide that that's the final watch. In which case I will give the discs to charity.
There are plenty new films being released to keep me busy until I shuffle off my mortal coil.
    Hope this helps Pauly.

I’m 60 and have been collecting since I was in my 40’s. In the early days I would buy everything just to bulk out my collection but it soon gets out of hand and becomes hoarding. I used to be in the mindset of I must have that latest limited edition and store it on the shelf with the rest only to gather dust and never be watched. Many thousands of pounds later I’ve learned my lesson and now only buy films and shows I will watch on a regular basis, if I’m only going to watch it once then it’s pointless buying it as I have less time ahead of me than behind me. I was lucky enough to get a good price for the majority of my collection and now it’s much more manageable with the ones I have left which are mainly classic films and tv shows I know I will watch again.

What i try to do is watch things on streaming first, and if i like them then i get the blu-ray or 4k. But i do have a bit of the 'i'll get that because it's got ____ in it' or 'i'll get this because ____ directed it'. Another thing for me is the studio, for example i can usually trust that a Searchlight Pictures film will be enjoyable so i may watch the trailer then buy it on blu-ray, without have even seen reviews.

I know what your saying Paul. We all run out of space at some point. I do like to blind buy movies as well. Sometimes you can find a jem you never heard of. I'm at the same crossroad as you. I'm going with the rewatchability factor. It really comes down to if you're sure you don't care if you see the movie or tv show etc. again. As far as doubles go, I've been adding 4k's to steelbooks and just keeping the 1 I like most. But still have doubles of your favorites with different artwork. Here in the states not as big of selection in places especially 4k. Good luck on your decision making.

I call it a thinning of the heard. I'm not a completest for the most part with a few exceptions due to the fact that it can take up a lot of room with lesser works that I'll pay little attention to. I enjoy a lot of older movies and if I can easily stream it, it has to be a movie I really cherish before I'll own the physical media. I'm not a 4K collector, but I'm fine with dvds/blurays, and have a huge collection of 3D blurays as I have both a projector and two 3D TVs. I guess that can be considered completest, as I'll buy a 3D version just to have it even though it may not be a favorite.

I wouldn’t say I’m a collector but I do like to physically own films I really like. I’m running out of space and hate to admit that it’s easier to stream. So I don’t know which category that puts me in 😂

Hi Pauly, i have 529 movies and 384 computer games i am one of those who only collect films and games that i know i will watch/play again and again. You have a great massive collection going on.
I do agree with you on the will i watch it again side, i go through my collection once every 4 months just to see if i would play/watch them again if not i would trade in cex or if cex give a low price i just donate it to charity near me.
Buying side - if i have already seen a film or i really want to see it i would buy it in 4k. But if its a film that i want to see and never seen it. I would wait till it goes super cheap, so if its a bad film i aint wasted alot of money on it (one reason why i miss blockbuster video, save money)

Interesting video. Everyone collects in their own way. If you feel like you need to slim your collection day for space, do it. I recently went through my TV show's and purged alot (Video coming soon 😜).
I do think you simplyfied it too much by only listing 3 types of collectors. There are a ton more than that. Would be an interesting dicussion.

I usually watch a film I haven't seen in at least five years. Last night I watched The Terminator. Only seen it once before.

We are all addicted to collecting and it is very hard to stop. I stopped by steelbooks a long time back because they were just churning out the same movie with different design Steel books. I myself have slowed down buying physical Media. With having sky and Netflix I'm not getting around to watching anything on Netflix just haven't got the time. I am going to take all my steelbooks to cex. I won't get much but at least they won't be in my way

Everyone collects how they want, I personally don't keep anything I'm never going to watch.
I have a regular clear out, but make sure its something I don't want.

I fall into the 2nd category I would also say I’m also a label collector like Criterion, Not so much UK as there’s less choice and Second Sight, Kino especially 4ks, recently added some Vinegar Syndromes to my collection those VSuS are hard to resist, I tend to import more now as well, I prefer the US titles, I did start collecting Radiance but I lost interest. Also been getting steelbooks recently. Certainly this year financially I have been buying less stuff and making regular trips to CEX to sell them some good stuff I’ve not watched all region B of course.

I do enjoy a good blind buy, although mostly I’ll just blind buy criterion cos I trust the curation and have only been burned by one of over 100 I have bought, with studio releases I’ll usually wait for a discount or for it to show up for around a fiver in cex, don’t like steelbooks or most big boxes, I probably only have a 5 or 6 arrow big boxes, I like the arrow box sets but space is at a premium for me, I have really slowed down with my purchasing over the last year or so, mainly cos I got more important things to spend money on, eg car payments and shit

Hi Paul hope you are well, i can save you a few quid and space you will have to go back to the Blockbuster mentality and rent movies you are not sure about, as most movies are one time watches nowadays. For example you mentioned Incendies a 2011 film not sure how much you paid for it but on Apple to rent its £1.99. Tarot £4.99 to rent and you'll probably never watch it again. Just a thought.

    • @BigPauly
      @BigPauly  7 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

Yes I’ll probably be renting a lot more movies cheaply to see if I’m going to buy the physical copy

I think you have the TH-camr issue , I must buy xyz movies this week because my viewers want to see what I bought this week ! You need to ask yourself as it’s a blind buy why do I need it is it just to show it off to my viewers or am I going to miss out on a good movie ? If your doing it for views your on a loosing battle !
I only buy movies I want to watch and not because xyz TH-camr /reviewer said I should buy it !
Why not go through your collection and make your movie you haven’t seen stand out ( lie down) so when you want to watch a movie watch one you haven’t seen then decide if to keep or discard it !

    • @BigPauly
      @BigPauly  7 วันที่ผ่านมา

That’s true but even on ones we do watch. Blu-rays that once cost £17 can now be bought for about £3 in CEX

  • @odine6806
    @odine6806 9 วันที่ผ่านมา

I only occasionally watch your channel and as suspected you waste a lot of money buying stuff you wont watch. I amassed 5000 dvds mostly and blu rays second hand and two years ago realised i barely watched them. I really cant be bother to list them on ebay and then package and waste time buying postage. Forget about CEX and selling them for a penny and then seeing listed for sale at £2. i now just go to the cinema and watch every piece of tat thats playing at the local cinema including Indian films on various languages, subtitles are a boon.
I grew up as a renter and hired thousands of films on tape and then joined Lovefilm and preferred getting 3 discs to watch and post them back that way i' watched most of the boutique stuff out at the time.

Why? More films and TV series get released on dvd than any other format in the uk. They are cheaper and they still have good enough picture and sound.
