The problem is in USA they think all italians speak with the same accent, that it's basically the accent that is famous in USA because of movies. Many italians that went to USA at the beginning of 1900 and after the WW2, were from South of Italy and their accent is completely different from Center or North of Italy, not only when they speak english, but also when they speak italian. So clearly Hillary is not very aware of how italians speak, and maybe Conan is backing her because it's supposingly funny.
but that's not even the south accent, it's just the dumb sound every non italian does, as well as we do when we try to imitate chinese accent, german accent and so on. cliches we all have.
That's a good point, but as Italian I can say that this stereotype accent is quite similar to italians speaking english from Naples. My former english teacher was from Naples so I know what I'm talking about.
well, i'm italian too, my family is from naples and i grew up in a more southern spot of italy, so i know what you are talking about and it just doesn't make sense. The part of italy that moved to America in the first place was the north (1860) and just 20 years later the south moved as well.Also the biggest part of southern italians were from sicily and calabria (completely different accent from neapolitan). But i do agree that american/gangster movies portrayed us in that silly and one-dimensional way. cliche

This stereotypical way of speaking Italian in a sing-song voice is actually mostly false. It is somewhat true of Neopolitan Italian dialect, but largely untrue of most Italian. Compared to American English, there is a little more sing-song quality to mainstream Italian, but really it is minor and nowhere near what these TV shows make you believe.

This obviously doesn’t apply to the general American accent you hear on TV. The southern twang is perceived as a very folklorish accent, usually paired with a cowboy looking man lol. GUarda che gli stranieri lo fanno perché ce lo vedono fare e si chiedono sempre che cosa voglia dire. Lo associano alla nostra lingua, il che non è sbagliato, dato che il gesticolare (ma anche gli americani gesticolano, come si vede dal filmato, e non poco) è una caratteristica del nostro modo di comunicare. Non ti prendono in giro: per loro è strano e magari buffo, come per noi può essere curioso e buffo il fatto che i giapponesi ridano sempre. Ci scherziamo anche noi. Non mi sembra che loro stessero offendendo nessuno. Mi è capitato la stessa cosa con un gruppo di ragazzi di Boston che mi chiedevano perché si deve fare sempre quel gesto quando si parla italiano: io gli ho spiegato semplicemente che si fa per dire 'Cosa stai facendo? Ma che stai dicendo? Cosa vuoi, insomma?' e che ha anche una sfumatura un po' seccata. Una volta che loro ebbero scoperto il significato mi dissero che non l'avrebbero più fatto, perché credevano fosse un gesto normale, come un tenere la cadenza. Basta spiegarsi e non fare i permalosi e noi italiani, purtroppo, tendiamo ad esserlo per uno strano complesso di superiorità/inferiorità: crediamo che tutti ce l'abbiano con noi perché riteniamo di essere i migliori e gli altri, invece, un po' degli scemotti.
Vero, ma devi considerare che loro si approcciano ad una lingua che non conoscono nella versione italiana, ma in quella italo-americana. I nostri immigrati di prima ondata si recarono nelle zone del nord-est degli USA, specialmente le città di New York City, Boston, Philadelphia e Baltymore. Lì ibridarono, progressivamente, dialetti italiani del sud (Campania, Sicilia, Calabria, Abruzzo, Lazio), con l'American English della costa Nord-Est. Quello che loro conoscono bene è una sorta di pindgin. Il nostro uso dei gesti, se qualcuno non glielo spiega, è da loro conosciuto in maniera frammentaria e filtrata da stereotipi legato all'italo-americano. Non è ignoranza generica. Noi stessi conosciamo poco ed usiamo male anche la loro gestualità (le famose corna, in American English, sono un gesto derivato dal linguaggio dei sordomuti e significano 'I love you', vi voglio bene, ma noi lo usiamo a sproposito, per fare il verso ai rapper). Lo stesso vale per gli altri paesi. Fare le doppie corna in giapponese è un normale modo per dire 4.pèerchè se fai il 4 come lo facciamo noi, quello significa cornuto. Non sono loro che sono ignoranti: loro sono come chiunque si approcci ad una lingua e gestualità straniera senza essere stato informato da un madrelingua. Anche l'accento: loro conoscono soprattutto l'italiano sudista (tranne in California dove c'è maggioranza di immigrati genovesi, toscani e qualche pugliese) ed è per questo che parlano italiano i quel modo. Come facciamo noi l'imitazione di un tedesco? Lo facciamo facendolo parlare con gli accenti berlinesi, di Amburgo e dell'alta Sassonia, mentre il tedesco standard è quello bavarese. Ma se non studi tedesco, non puoi saperlo. E' un errore normale che fanno tutte le nazioni. Ti assicuro, però, che negli USA ci sono facoltà di lettere dedicate allo studio dell'italiano, fin dalle origini del volgare dei poeti siciliani e toscani e chi lo studia realmente, non usa quell'accento alla Soprano! XD

When my wife and I were in France, they were very kind about our lame attempts to speak french. I think they appreciated the fact that we weren't being obnoxious Americans just screaming english louder.

E comunque se leggi i miei messaggi, visto che sembri "conoscermi", non parlo male tanto per parlare, ma faccio critiche circostanziate e costruttive. Non lo faccio per denigrare il sud a prescindere, ma perchè sarei più che felice di vederlo migliorare sono tanti aspetti. Piccolo aneddoto: qui nella mia cittadina, fra anni '70 ed '80 un quartiere si era trasformato in una sorta di mini Rione Sanità con l'arrivo di decine, centinaia di immigrati napoletani; c'erano bande di ragazzini che giocavano a fare i piccoli camorristi, ricordo ancora nelle scuole ... Bene, da 20-25 anni tutto questo è praticamente sparito; e sai perchè ? perchè quei napoletani e soprattutto i loro figli, vivendo qui e vivendo il senso civico trentino, sono diventati quasi più "austriaci" di noi trentini. Tanto che se ci parli, ora quei napoletani sono più "acidi" di noi nel criticare i comportamenti dei loro ex concittadini ...

Io ho una barca di 12 metri a forma di mandolino e l'ho chiamata "la carbonara"...sulla mia barca ci sono regole ferree, si puo mangiare solo pastasciutta e si deve cantare tutti insieme almeno una volta, ho i mandolini sotto coperta per ogni evenienza. The meaning of that tipical italian gesture ranges from a simple " what" to a harsher " wtf", depending on how strong you wanna emphasize your point. In Italy we usually use one hand only . But in the South, if you're pissed then 2 hands are necessary.

This stereotypical way of speaking Italian in a sing-song voice is actually mostly false. It is somewhat true of Neopolitan Italian dialect, but largely untrue of most Italian. Compared to American English, there is a little more sing-song quality to mainstream Italian, but really it is minor and nowhere near what these TV shows make you believe.

This obviously doesn’t apply to the general American accent you hear on TV. The southern twang is perceived as a very folklorish accent, usually paired with a cowboy looking man lol. I honesty happen to like it because it’s warmer and less “distant” than the rest of the English accents.

Lo associano alla nostra lingua, il che non è sbagliato, dato che il gesticolare (ma anche gli americani gesticolano, come si vede dal filmato, e non poco) è una caratteristica del nostro modo di comunicare. Non ti prendono in giro: per loro è strano e magari buffo, come per noi può essere curioso e buffo il fatto che i giapponesi ridano sempre. Ci scherziamo anche noi. Non mi sembra che loro stessero offendendo nessuno. Mi è capitato la stessa cosa con un gruppo di ragazzi di Boston che mi chiedevano perché si deve fare sempre quel gesto quando si parla italiano: io gli ho spiegato semplicemente che si fa per dire 'Cosa stai facendo? Ma che stai dicendo? Cosa vuoi, insomma?' e che ha anche una sfumatura un po' seccata. Una volta che loro ebbero scoperto il significato mi dissero che non l'avrebbero più fatto, perché credevano fosse un gesto normale, come un tenere la cadenza. Basta spiegarsi e non fare i permalosi e noi italiani, purtroppo, tendiamo ad esserlo per uno strano complesso di superiorità/inferiorità: crediamo che tutti ce l'abbiano con noi perché riteniamo di essere i migliori e gli altri, invece, un po' degli scemotti.
Vero, ma devi considerare che loro si approcciano ad una lingua che non conoscono nella versione italiana, ma in quella italo-americana. I nostri immigrati di prima ondata si recarono nelle zone del nord-est degli USA, specialmente le città di New York City, Boston, Philadelphia e Baltymore. Lì ibridarono, progressivamente, dialetti italiani del sud (Campania, Sicilia, Calabria, Abruzzo, Lazio), con l'American English della costa Nord-Est. Quello che loro conoscono bene è una sorta di pindgin. Il nostro uso dei gesti, se qualcuno non glielo spiega, è da loro conosciuto in maniera frammentaria e filtrata da stereotipi legato all'italo-americano. Non è ignoranza generica. Noi stessi conosciamo poco ed usiamo male anche la loro gestualità (le famose corna, in American English, sono un gesto derivato dal linguaggio dei sordomuti e significano 'I love you', vi voglio bene, ma noi lo usiamo a sproposito, per fare il verso ai rapper). Lo stesso vale per gli altri paesi. Fare le doppie corna in giapponese è un normale modo per dire 4.pèerchè se fai il 4 come lo facciamo noi, quello significa cornuto. Non sono loro che sono ignoranti: loro sono come chiunque si approcci ad una lingua e gestualità straniera senza essere stato informato da un madrelingua. Anche l'accento: loro conoscono soprattutto l'italiano sudista (tranne in California dove c'è maggioranza di immigrati genovesi, toscani e qualche pugliese) ed è per questo che parlano italiano i quel modo. Come facciamo noi l'imitazione di un tedesco? Lo facciamo facendolo parlare con gli accenti berlinesi, di Amburgo e dell'alta Sassonia, mentre il tedesco standard è quello bavarese. Ma se non studi tedesco, non puoi saperlo. E' un errore normale che fanno tutte le nazioni. Ti assicuro, però, che negli USA ci sono facoltà di lettere dedicate allo studio dell'italiano, fin dalle origini del volgare dei poeti siciliani e toscani e chi lo studia realmente, non usa quell'accento alla Soprano! XD

That is such a monster accent and at first I didn't even understand what she was asking. Plus that hand motion means "what/what do you want" so you're actually asking a glass of water and saying "what do you want?". La difficoltà degli americani è diffusa ovunque a causa della pigrizia mentale e anche perchè effettivamente esiste una difficoltà auricolare e fonetica tra lingue diverse.

That's the super Mario accent... We don't talk that way. If you are Italian and you speak like that, it is likely that you have a mental delay. Italian is a complex language but extremely beautiful to listen to.
