Where everyone was smart in suits and well mannered and polite to everyone basil rathbone and nigel Bruce two of the greatest actors ever
Norfolk Jackets a distinctive British jacket.
I think Basil Rathbone and Jeremy Brett were the two best Sherlock Holmes ever.
Absolutely.
Agree 💯
I agree but with the Rathbone ones it always seemed like his Watson was portrayed as a bit of a blithering idiot . Jerry Brett was the best
Roy William Neill's "Sherlock Holmes" films are in hindsight and in every respect, the forerunners of the 007 James Bonde film series.
Another wonderful old movie from "my era" and that brings back happy memories of a great childhood.
I'm so used to watching this series in b&w that it's a shock to see it colorized for the first time. 😊❤😊
Even though it's not perfect yet, I like the colorization. Some people call it a travesty, but to me it's a massive improvement. It gives them so much more depth and detail! The faces, clothing and scenery are all brought alive, instead of just being a flat grey nothing. So I say Bravo!
I have seen all 14 of these Sherlock Holmes movies! They are the best ones every made, hands down!!!
... a million years ago when l was a young girl, l used to have a crush on Basil Rathbone ... perhaps l still do ... ❤❤❤
I do
@@justagirl7094 ... yes, he was something else, wasn't he ?! ... something special ...
Must of been those green tights in Robin Hood 😂
Quite understandable, my dear Linda Joy.
@@lindapepper1067 ... yay ... another Linda ... God bless u Sweetie ... 😁🤗
I really enjoy these Sherlock Holmes films. See them again in colour really gives them a new lease of life. Thanks for the upload.
I love how Mrs Hudson isn't fooled by Holmes' disguise.
An absolute gem. War propaganda, and no real connection with the Holmes canon, but just as good as a documentary, with a proper plot and some very good acting.
Thank you for sharing!
Even though Basil Rathbone is best known for Sherlock Holmes, the first thing I noticed him in was The Adventures Of Robin Hood as Sir Guy Of Gisbourne
Boohoo hisssss vilan
I would imagine that Robin Hood YTP “Friar’s Rubbing Wood” would give Rathbone’s performance some needed internet attention.
One of my all time favourites, featuring not one, but two terrific villains, the other of course being Claude Rains.
Also, the pirate Captain Levasseur
Thank you!!! I knew he looked familiar could not place it.......
A bit of Trivia: Basil Rathbone was an expert swordsman and taught virtually every Hollywood Actor, including Errol Flynn.
Rathbone, also, in every movie he was in that had a sword fight, his character lost the fight.
I’ve had a few sword fights myself but I always lose because my sword isn’t long enough.
@@ronaldmarberry9719 You should take Hand to Hand Combat Training or Staff Fighting. You'll need a good strong Staff for the close combat and Stamina.
Best sword fight in cinematic history: Basil Rathbone versus Tyrone Power in "Zorro" - Rathbone once said, that Tyrone Power was the only swordsman he felt uncomfortable with.
Yes he also fought in world war 1 and his brother was killed in action
@@ronaldmarberry9719
That's what she said.
"This earth, this realm, this England!" Just as Sean Connery set the standard for James Bond; so did Basil Rathbone for Sherlock Holmes!
At 1:01:00 Moriarty says : the needle to the end, hay Holmes. That's a reference to the fact that Holmes is a drug addict.
Richard II - Shakespeare.
"This royal throne of kings, This sceptered isle, This earth of majesty, This seat of Mars... etc." Yes, that Shakespeare could really spin a line!@@gljm
Moriarty: "I expected something ingenious--this is ingenuous!" Magnificent remnant of intellectual British humour.
So very much better than the shallowness of American humor!
LOVE how this film portrayed wartime conditions accurately (for instance-a FEMALE PILOT-UNHEARD OF in this era of filmmaking)….
Amelia Earhart was well known at that time.
When Holmes dressed as Hoffner it had me fooled , love these programs.
😂
😘
These old movies always cheer me up a lot! There's so many cool films with Rathbone and/or Bruce in them, it's fun to try to recall them all 📽️ (remember Nigel in "Rebecca " or "The Two Mrs Carroll's" ? Or Basil in "Son of Frankenstein" ? ) So nice!
I just saw him in "Rebecca!" Thank you! I was racking my brain trying to remember which movie.
@@lemorab1 I'm glad that I could help! Bruce was also in "Suspicion" (another with Joan Fontaine) ❤😊
Hey what was that one where they said Nigel was the bad guy? It was recommended to me. I was going to watch but I can't remember the name 😐 so I tried looking up filmography to no avail.
@@cheechiajohri Found it for you: "The Rains Came". It was mentioned in his Wiki article. 1939, he plays a "despicable" character. Same year as Hound of the Baskervilles.
@@EmpyreanLightASMR thank you so much😌🙏🙂
Classic duo: Basil and Nigel the Bruce as the good guys! But my-me-oh-my super villian in da house! At-tension Lionel At-will. Hope he's the baddie and not the kidnapped scientist. That would be criminal. Atwill always played his villian roles with relish, mustard and ketchup. Spicy is best. These Basil-Nigel Sherlock flicks were me faves. Never failed to deliver. So homies make tiime to watch this one. Bring you spyglass, pipe and funny hat!
Good zanti 👸
No one does Moriarty like Atwill!! My favorite nemesis!
Very dangerous the way Dr Watson is waving that revolver around with the hammer back too.
Yes , and subject to fall asleep at any moment .
I watched every Sherlock Holmes movie and read each of his novels you can find on the Net and in books, but I surely will watch this one again many thanks for posting 👍
They were not Sherlock's books - Sir Arthur Conan Doyle invented Holmes ...
@Jo Line
OYFG !... Of course, I know who created Sherlock Holmes!!!
I just used his name for convenience!!!
Thank youuuuu
For the color, the subtitle and all ❤🤗🤗🤗
A telephone?! A telephone in a sherlock holmes story? What's next? A macbook?
The colorized version is surprisingly good. Thanks
Obrigado pelas postagens.
Grandes filmes.
Sou do Brasil .
Thank you for allowing us to view this movie!
Yes linda Basil was a great actor, and as somebody said the only real convincing sherlock Holmes.....ever. I believe he was an expert swordsman, and would teach other actors, the sword play, including errol flyn and other famous actors.
Love this showing us how it is bad good and evil god bless us we still here nothing changes
Thank you for the excellent video quality, hope to see same on all of Rathbone's sherlock films!
45:35. . That light for processing the photographic image looks REMARKABLY like the top-secret bomb sight at 22:54. . . AMAZING!!
You must assume that your audience is brain dead .
THANKS FOR SHARING. GOOD OLD CLASSICS. BEST MOVIES.
Watson in his. Clumsy. Ignorance. Gets on my. Nerves ! Sometimes. I can do without. That interpretation. !!! .
Vollig einverstanden!!
Vollig einverstanden!!
I love these old movies. Especially the Univeral- and Hammer-ones 😎
I used to have fun with "(What Shall We Do With the) Drunken Sailor" at a gig. One verse went "Put him in the rack with the captain's daughter," after which a friend of mine in the bar would chime in with "I'd like to be the drunken sailor!" I'd then respond with "You've never seen the captain's daughter, you've never seen the captain's daughter, you've never seen the captain's daughter earlye in the morning!" I REALLY miss gigging.
What about the choice bit of shouting ?
You gotta have shouting !
There is something so different about the actors in that time of the 20th Century. Something more natural & decent. Each actor had some kind of an individual look or tone of voice. The charactor actors as a whole except for the one's picked as stars really had something to offer the screen.
I noticed North Fork sheriff Micah ( Paul Fix) at the beginning of the movie. He seems to show up on so many movies from the 30s, 40s, and 50s up to his role in "The Rifleman".
Did you notice Millburn Stone, "Doc" from Gunsmoke played in Sherlock Holmes Faces Death?
Absolutely fantastic film! thank you so much !
Tekstitys on päin... Sanoinko mitä. Sanoja on, mutta lauseiden sisältö siansaksaa.
Que gran adaptación de este viejo filme. Y el color y la imagen fantásticas. Gracias por subirla ;)
How is it London in ruins an Holmes building still standing must be good luck. 😊
Rathbone would have been none the worse for a haircut.
Excellent stuff. Thank you for posting it. I think I prefer black and white though.
I always liked Basil as Sherlock the best. It would be nice though if your subtitles were closer to what they are actually saying. Thanks for sharing this classic.
LOL Yes, I had to make a conscious effort not to look, but sometimes I couldn't help it.
You can turn them off from the "settings" menu (gear wheel icon) in the video player's control bar.
The control bar includes " audio speed" very useful for foreign films.
The subtitles are the standard computerized TH-cam ones. If a channel wants to pay big bucks to create their own more accurate ones, they can, but few do, and it's obvious why. They will not recoup their costs.
He also played the sherife of Nottingham. He also appeared in other films
Felt so good to watch this movie.thanks.
Excellent colorization . Good clear print.
The diabolical " drag the victim across a mattress " torture . This is what one would call a comedy of horrors .
I love Basil & Nigel but hate the coloring. Prefer original black and white.
My favorite of the Basil Rathbone series.
“This England”.--or any country with a Gov’t based in liberty and Freedom!
Una joya encontrada!!! Gracias mil x subirla y tomarse la molestia p ntro deleite!!
What a great movie and thanks finnish subtitles too 🎬🇫🇮
Moriarty dies the death of a thousand cuts...or just a thousand deaths.
SHERLOCK HOLMES, QUE EMINENCIA, QUE AGUDEZA, QUE REFLEJOS , VALENTIA ETC ...REUNE TODAS LOS TALENTOS DE UN VERDADERO DETECTIVE !!! ...CON DETECTIVES IGUAL A ÉL, EN EL MUNDO HABRÍA MENOS CORRUPCCION !!!!..IGUAL, LA ESPERANZA SIEMPRE ESTA ...MUCHAS GRACIAS POR SUBIR LA PELICULA , EXELENTE !!!!
Beautiful setting and definitely great era
The film shows glimpses of a bygone time when skyscrapers didn't crowd out historic London . Impermanence.
Wonderful - many thanks!

Love Sherlock and Watson!
Muito bom filme !!! Sherlock Holmes fantástico !!! Agradecida !!!
Entertained and amazed. Never thought Watson was a red head.😮
Good point . I knew he was an air head , but a red head too !
Does anyone else find it unusual that Holmes is smoking a cigar? I can’t say I’ve ever seen him smoking a cigar before! 15:27
This earth,
This realm,
This England...

A very enjoyable Sherlock Holmes movie.
Thank you for these beautiful films and great work s
At 1:54, see Paul Fix, who played 'Micah Torrance', the sheriff in the 1960s 'Rifleman' TV series.
I love the colorizing.
Thoroughly enjoyed watching this movie and the last words, "this England " were inspiring. Tomorrow, present day history will be made live from London. I will watch King Charles III coronation. How very fitting. Long live the King.
Thanks!
Very excellent job , congratulations ! ! !
Show de bola e de vídeo. Parabéns pelo seu trabalho.
What I found somewhat surprising was Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson in a WW11 scenario. Surely tgey were usually set in the pre WW1 era, pre 1914!
Life started in Africa as all kind of science have shown, so I don’t know what your blabbering about😂😂😂
But I love Britain too, and visit as often as I can afford to.
And Sherlock is my favorite along with poirot and miss marple. I’m hooked on British mysteries.
I think Jeremy Brett is the best Sherlock and his series sticks to the books wich I prefer😊
You can find them here on TH-cam also
I have the DVD 📀 Blessings and Hugs 💖💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕
Happy 80th Anniversary!
Thanks for Great Movie.

Claro!!
