Wow! He has answered my question, quite well. Thanks Gun Dad. From what I understand, the Springfield XD and HK USP are the only guns factory rated for Supers.
@Stuckcase7775 is a great ambassador of the 45 super. Ammo test and Alaskan ballistics are other good channels as well. I also forgot to mention: steep country outdoors did a few good tests.
I have a 4" XD and run Supers for outdoors and hunting. The recoil is stout, but manageable, even without a muzzle brake/comp. The XD is tuned perfectly for being able to shoot standard 45aarp, all the way up to hot Supers that meet or exceed what 10mm manages. The pro with 10mm for me is, availability. To get any loads that aren't 40S&W Long, I have to either order online or handload. Supers cost about the same as similar performing 10mms. Except the Extreme Penetrator. The Supers are loaded super weak sauce...
The 45super benefits from handloading your own. A good load is a 250gn XTP 1.20" 8.3gn Longshot, 1050fps for a setup without a Compensator. I have worked up this load to 1250fps/850FPE with more room for powder and no signs of nearing high pressure, a 230gn bullet fragments at these velocities. Other than the 250gn XTP solid copper bullets are best for super sonic velocities from a 45super.
My EDC is a custom 1911 45acp Double stack(16 in the mag and 1 in the pipe) running Hawthorn 255 gr 45 Super Ammo (1490 fps and 1257 fpe ) on the chronograph. Luckily for me Hawthorn is local but pricey. 🤟😎👍❤💯🇺🇲
I use 135gr XD supers in my fnx45 without needing to change anything. One of the benefits of not going to 460 Rowland is that I can still shoot 45 acp without having to take everything apart. Just slap in a different.
I've been hearing this is fine, I just haven't tried it my FNX Tactical yet. I do have a micro compensator on it & that should help slow down the slide velocity a little.
Yeah, 45 super was just an attempt to get more juice out of the 45acp. I converted my Xd45 to 45 super and it functions great, even with regular 45acp. I think a good 45 +p round does all your need it to do without the extra recoil or 255gr pills!
I have a whole file of data on Ramshot Enforcer powder for 45 Super. I can't find it at the moment. Must be on another machine. I have a Springfield XD Tactical that has a 460 conversion. Couldn't get the brass (Starline) during the recent troubles. I got up with Starline and learned their 45 Super brass has the same alloy and extra thickness at the base as the 460. I picked up 1,000 cases to mess with. I had a neighbor (no longer with us) load me a bunch of stuff to try with the Starline 45Super brass and Enforcer powder. The heavier loads were sub 460, but very stout. I put a Storm Lake 45acp barrel in a Glock 41 with a 22 pound captive steel recoil spring. Wicked stuff. I won't give you numbers until I find that file, but with 200 and 220 grain .451 hardcast, it smokes 10mm. Lemme see if I can find that. Hating the S&W 2.0 10mm, by the way. I have the G40 longslide and a conversion barrel to 10 for the G41. They're fine. The S&W has been back to the factory multiple times and still won't run 5 shots consecutive of any load over 180 grains
My two .45 ACP pistols, a Springfield 1911 and a Smith & Wesson M1917, are in good shape, but not new and don't need the excess pressure. I get the impulse to stretch a cartridge's potential, but for most applications, as you say, the 10mm or .44 Magnum will do the job that .45 Super can't for lack of proper guns to fire it. And if someone absolutely, positively needs a hot .45 in a handgun, there are revolvers and even derringers made in .45-70.
I’ve always like 45 Super. I will carry it in my G36 & 30S. Although when I do I swap out to 4 or 4.5” KKM barrel for better support and I throw in either my Wolff 20# _(uncaptured)_ RSA or the DPM. I stick with either the 200 or 230gn XTP.
@@thegundungeon Not too bad. But it’s not something I run a lot of either. Although I didn’t mention it the striker springs are heavier. Can’t remember what weight off the top of my head, but the 36 & 30S have Wolff striker springs.
@@thegundungeon Oh FWIW I run LPP for my 45 Super. Whereas my 45 & +P are all SPP. That way at a glance I can tell what ammo is what. Back when I still had 450 SMC brass it was the reverse. 45 & +P were LPP.
I have always had an interest in .45 Super as well. I came across a youtube channel called "Stuck Case". He has gotten some extreme velocities in his loads. An interesting channel.
There are 2 things about me that set me apart from everyone else, I am a genius and a have balls. There are 2 requirements for someone to shoot 45super, genius and balls. I am glad that there is a round that sets me apart from the rest. The information is out there to know what you need to shoot or reload 45super, but it requires genius to understand and differentiate from the false information. There is a method to reload 45super safely and it requires genius to figure it out. All in all, balls are always needed to take the next step every step of the way. 45super has many levels, from the factory options and choosing the right firearm to reloading to the maximum potential and choosing the right upgrades. That is why everyone that runs 45super has unique setups. It requires alot of research. The only thing I will say is that if you think 45super stops at 28,000PSI, then you know absolutely nothing. 45super is not for everyone. I shoot it out of a G30S, I started with Underwood 45super in the factory setup and soon got a 20# RSA. Now I shoot 45super as hot, or hotter, than 460Rowland using a KKM barrel, Comp, Custom guide rod and springs.
That’s the thing, I don’t claim to know, I’d like to know but as much crazy nonsense as I see spread on forums and reloading pages, I don’t trust much from people lol
@@thegundungeonWell, I got information on my channel, a lot of boring talk. Mostly it is just about my setup and experience using a Glock 30S. I have an FNX 45 Tactical with a muzzle brake. It's supposed to be able to handle .45 Super without any trouble. I haven't tried it yet, though. They say since it has a fully supported chamber & the compensator will slow down the slide velocity a little, it doesn't require any other changes. I've just not been confident enough to try it.
I have worked extensively on 45 super, i have considered putting out a video or series of videos on the 45 super, how to safely shoot it. Im not sure if youtube will allow it but i am seriously considering making some videos. Do you think such a series or video would be interesting to some people?
no 45 super info, I had a 40 super barrel in a Glock 21, shot mostly underwood ammo, usually got about 100 ft/sec increase over underwood 10mm loads of the same bullet. Ended up trading pistol and and barrel for a GP100 National match.
