I just wanna say I appreciate you making this video, it helped a lot! I just got home from MEPS and was there for two days. I scored a 96 on the ASVAB and they really tried to push Nuke to me it's insane. My recruiter and everyone was mentioning it. The job counselor at the end almost didn't give me the rate I want (AC), because he said I qualify for every rate but highly recommends Nuke and said I'll get a 75k bonus if I join. He said I'll probably won't get this rate, because I overqualify in his words. But I stayed firm and insistent for AC, he folded and agreed to sign me as that rate but he still gave me a Nuke contract to take home saying I can change my mind anytime. Good video. I enlisted into the Navy in 1987 and unlike yourself I did not have such a good experience. I have my own advice based upon my firsthand experience. Number one, if you have a "bad vibe" about your recruiter...dont use them. Use someone else. Lot of losers in recruiter duty.... people they dont want out in the fleet. Number two, when you go to MEPS and you have a specific objective you want...AKA a specific rate or program...and the MEPS people refuse to give it to you in writing...walk. Be polite about it, say "Sir, I came to MEPS to enlist into the Navy to get program X in my enlistment contract. If you dont have a quota for me for that program or you dont think Im cut out for that program, I will go home." Again be polite about it, but be firm with the MEPS people and be decisive. Dont enlist into a rate or program that you dont want. You WILL be miserable if you do that. If you are enlisting into the Navy to be a Corpsman but MEPS insists you enlist as a Gunners Mate or into Seaman Apprentice program... politely but very firmly WALK. Sign nothing.
Thank you for this video. I was trying to go into the airforce but it did not work out due to me not meeting the hearing standards at meps. I have been in the process for awhile now because I've got a bad procrastination habit, but I think it's time I finally change my life for the better, because I know I can be more than I am now. As for questions, what exactly does "rate" mean? I've seen it in a few videos but never heard it during my air force process or at meps.
Officially, "rate" is what paygrade you are, and "rating" is what job you have. However people say "rank" for what paygrade they are and "rate" for what job they have. It's a mistake that happens every day and leads to a lot of confusion when looking at paperwork but long story short rate basically means rank and rating basically means MOS or your job.

Max age to join the Navy is 41 not 39. But other then that man, your videos are awesome and very informative. I'll be joining soon before December hopefully. How many questions is the ASAV?
Holy cow, you're right. They just raised it a few months ago. When I joined it was still 39. I'm not sure how many questions were on it. They gave me a computer test of it at the recruiting office and I got the 84 and then it was "verified" at MEPS by asking a few similar questions and they were like yeah it's an accurate score.
You're the one that has all the cards, they need you to join for their quotas. Once you sign and are at the navy's mercy at boot camp, that's when the navy is the one with all the cards.
@HaedenBeck Thanks for the response! I will keep that in mind. I was originally planning on the airforce but after I learned that you have to do a top 10 list thing and they basically choose for you I didn't like it.
Hi, I came across your channel while on my journey applying to the Navy. I took the PiCat instead of the ASVAB and scored a 64. They told me that I would be able to get contracts in the field that I wanted (medical) with my score. What is the likely hood that this is possible?
Well the medical rating for the Navy is HM, hospital corpsman, which is similar to the medical equivalent of other branches and in the civilian world would be something like a doctor's assistant. Although there are opportunities to move to other areas like combat medic with the fleet marine force and so on, but most HMs give flu shots, handle questions, and are just assistants to officers, and officers are the ones who are the real doctors and dentists and so on. To qualify for HM you need, or so it says online "VE+AR+MK+GS≥209-OR-MK+GS+2VE≥209" Your ASVAB is broken down into sections, the recruiter should hand you the sheet that breaks down the score from each of those sections like math and science and reading etc and if those scores add up to 209 like it says there you should qualify. You can also just straight up ask the recruiter do I qualify for HM and they'll say yes or no. Whatever happens, make sure that your rating (job), enlistment bonus, and everything you agreed upon is on the contract, read it front to back, and if it's not on the contract - it ain't happening and you're at their mercy.
The age for navy increase to 42 years old. I enjoyed your video. They want to push any job on you and cooking 🧑🍳 switch I love. But I don’t want to cook for crowd. 👎🏾. 😁
I really wanted the job with Guns, but because of my low asvab score they Only give me MM And EN rate😢 then I choose MM rate signed the Contract and waiting for my shipment this january. My recruiter told me that i can retake the asvab in the Bootcamp to choose another jobs is that true?
Once you're at boot camp whatever your contract says is what they're gonna go by. It's not an easy process to choose another job after you're already in the navy, or in the fleet trying to crossrate. I would suggest getting the job you want before joining and then making sure it's on the contract. If you want guns you're looking at GM Gunners Mate and MA Master at Arms, probably more so GM if you wanna handle weapons and be an expert on them. MAs mostly just guard stuff, but we obviously handle weapons while doing it. Maybe talk to the recruiter ask if MA or GM is available and if they say no just say call me back when it's available.
