      +Mississippi Dave Jacob is definitely on a higher plane than most of us when it comes to harmonic substitutions. He's taking unconventional chords and chord progressions and making perfect sense to the ear with them. His harmonies are a reminder to me that I have a long, long way to go as an arranger.

    • @MississippiDave
      @MississippiDave 9 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      +thelonearranger1 Oh absolutely. The only thing I've heard harmony-wise that I might compare it to would be a vocal group that was out years ago called Take 6... But Jacob goes way beyond what they did with his instrumental abilities, arranging, etc... Just incredible.

    • @iJiggsy
      @iJiggsy 9 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      ThatOneDude88 Also, if you want to get technical like that, labeling a chord as Augmented 9th implies that the entire chord is Augmented, which would mean the fifth is raised. You could label it a Maj#9 to save the confusion.

And man, there is a lot to experience. Even 8 years later and a whole bunch of albums later, having seen him on stage, having heard a some of his interviews and lessons, this man is a real step ahead in music.

    • @KasanovOFFICIAL
      @KasanovOFFICIAL 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Ok, so i've been trying to analyze what Jacob did in this part and i think i got it (anyone please correct me if i'm wrong on certain parts, i'm still learning lol)
      So we start on the "mind" lyric in the key of G major with a Gmaj9 chord (our I chord), then a Cadd11/D (IV/V), then we do a tritone substitution of the V chord of our Cadd11/D chord (which gives us a C#m9, resulting in us modulating to the key of B major, and thus becoming our ii), then we do a V I (F#maj6 to Bmaj7).
      Jacob really is a genius in jazz harmony so analysing these are really fun and help me a lot in understanding what is actually going on in his arrangements so i can implement them to my own, amazing stuff!

    • @oscargill423
      @oscargill423 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@KasanovOFFICIAL Sounds pretty much right! I'd say the transition from the Cadd11/D to the C#m9 is just contrary motion; apparently he really loves that stuff. But I can't say for sure. He just does what he feels like so there's no definitive answer except what he confirms.

    These are great. I like this one and the Flintstones. What fantastic harmonization. My Dad used to write arrangements for the tonight show band and I've been trying to get back there to play these for him. He's 85 now so he doesn't really work computers. I want to make sure he can hear it clearly. maybe with really good stereo phones.

      Have you had a chance to play these for your Dad? I imagine he loved them...

  • @williamheinz1997
    @williamheinz1997 5 ปีที่แล้ว +23

    It is amazing to me at the very end as he brings the harmony back to a comfortable place, how that in combination with the completely open way he looks at the camera forces you into an enriched state. For many of his harmonies he goes outside the western musical scale to produce notes that vary from the norm by micro-tones. In this way he creates harmonies that we never hear and this also enables him to transition between keys in a way that is easy on our ears and would otherwise be non-musical. He is particularly fascinated by the ways that these harmonies affect our emotions. All of this is only possible because of his ultra-perfect pitch, his fearless willingness to experiment and be creative and challenge the norms, and his incredible sensitivity, intellect and training. Furthermore, his age (24), his non-judgmental relationship to others, his ability to direct, compose, play any number of instruments well and be charismatic in front of an audience presents a package that challenges our understanding of what is possible for humans and for ourselves.

    Has anybody told you you're a genius, Mr. Collier? Those harmonies are out of this world. The music history books will have a new entry.

    Quello che mi stupisce, sono le parti di basso- possibile che abbia una estensione così grande?-Anni addietro c'erano i Take 6-
    e quello che stupiva era il "bassista"- Jacob, Bravissimo negli arrangiamenti- veramente un fenomeno- GENIALE.
